Abstract:
Gas turbines are used to convert thermal energy into mechanical energy. The thermal efficiency of the gas turbine is directly related to the turbine inlet temperature. The combustion and turbine technology has improved to such an extent that the operating temperature in the turbine inlet is higher than the melting temperature of the turbine material. Different techniques are used to cope with this problem. One of the most commonly used methods is internal cooling of the turbine blades. Conventionally air from the compressor is used for this purpose but due to higher heat capacity, steam can be used as coolant. This opens up the possibility to increase the gas temperature. In the case of a combined cycle power plant, its availability provides a good opportunity to be used as a coolant. The trailing edge of the gas turbine blades is an important region as it affects the aerodynamics of the flow. The aerodynamics demands a sharp and thin trailing edge to reduce profile losses. The conventional method is the release of a lot of cooling air though a slot along the airfoil trailing edge. However in the case of internal only cooling designs, the coolant is not allowed to leave the channel except from the root section to avoid mixing of the gas in the main flow path with the coolant and loss of cooling medium. The challenge is to design an inner cooling channel, with the cooling medium entering and leaving the blade at the root section, which reduces the metal temperatures to the required values without an increase of the profile losses and at acceptable cooling flow rate and pressure drop. This thesis presents Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) based numerical work concentrated firstly on the flow and heat transfer in two-pass rectangular channels with and without turbulator ribs. The aspect ratio of the inlet pass was reduced to accommodate more channels in the blade profile in chord-wise direction. Additionally, the divider-to-tip wall distance was varied for these channels. Their effect on heat transfer and pressure drop was studied for smooth as well as ribbed channels.  It was followed by a numerical heat transfer study in the trapezoidal channel. Different RANS based turbulence models were used to compare the numerical results with the experimental results. Further, new designs to enhance heat transfer in the channel’s side walls (named as trailing edge wall) were studied. These include the provision of ribs at the trailing edge wall only, inline arrangement of ribs at the bottom as well as at the trailing edge wall and a staggered arrangement of these ribs. The final study was a conjugate heat transfer problem with an aim to propose the best internal cooling channel design to reduce the metal temperature of the trailing edge surface for the given thermal and flow conditions. A number of different options were studied and changes were made to get the best possible channel design. The results show that for a two-pass rectangular channel (both smooth and ribbed), the reduction in inlet channel aspect ratio reduces the pressure drop. For a smooth channel the reduction in the width of the inlet pass does not affect the heat transfer enhancement at the inlet pass and outlet pass regions. In case of ribbed channels, heat transfer decreases at the tip and bend bottom with decrease in the width of the inlet pass. Among different turbulence models used to validate numerical results against experimental results for case of trapezoidal channel, the low-Re k-epsilon model is found to be the most appropriate. Using the turbulence model that yields results that are closest to the experimental data, the staggered arrangement of ribs at the trailing edge wall is found to have maximum thermal performance. The results from the conjugate heat transfer problem suggest using steam as coolant if it is available as it requires less mass flow rate to get similar wall temperature values as compared to air at similar thermal and flow conditions. It is also found that staggered arrangement of ribs is the best option compared to others to enhance heat transfer in trailing edge of the gas turbine blade with the pressure drop in the cooling duct in the acceptable range.<br>Gasturbiner används för att omvandla värmeenergi till mekanisk energi.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Aeronautics and Astronautics, 2010.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 91-93).<br>This thesis presents a design concept for return passages in multistage centrifugal compressors. Flow in a baseline return passage is analyzed to identify loss sources that have substantial potential for reduction. For the geometry analyzed, it is found that mismatched incidence of the return vane, separation on the hub surface at the exit of the return bend, and blockage due to separation on the shroud surface near the return bend inlet lead to losses which have such potential. Preliminary designs were developed and computationally assessed to determine effective geometries for eliminating separation on the hub at the return bend exit and for reducing losses. Then, based on assessment of the preliminary designs, other features of the loss generation were addressed. The geometry proposed includes an increased axial extent of the return bend, an increasing radius of curvature through the return bend, and lean of the return vane leading edge, mitigating the loss mechanisms identified in the baseline return passage. The three-dimensional calculations showed a cumulative loss coefficient that was 10% lower than the baseline. The design described was carried out with a fixed inlet condition, and a second return passage was thus developed to determine the potential loss reduction if the inlet geometry were modified. (The design of the impeller required to achieve the modified inlet flow was not considered.) The cumulative loss coefficient was reduced by 27% compared with the baseline, with the implication that an area for exploration is integration of the impeller and return passage flow fields.<br>by Benjamin W. Abstract:
Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2004.<br>Page 94 blank.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 91).<br>At the beginning of the 20th century most Americans died at home from diseases whose onset was quick and aggressive. The average life expectancy was only 50 years. Antibiotics first appeared in the 1940's and when the baby boomers were born medicine entered an unprecedented age of transformation, one where illness could be prevented, treated and cured. Unfortunately, along with this progress have also come slower and often more painful deaths. The most common causes of death today are degenerative diseases such as cancer and heart disease. Thus, it appears that the ability to treat disease has altered medical philosophy from a platform of maintaining health to one of preventing death at almost any cost. It is into this environment that the concept of hospice care has emerged as an alternative way of thinking about death and dying, a reaction to the existing biomedical model of care. Hospice has put a humane focus on dying by creating a setting where pain is managed allowing the patient to move onto the hard work of dying, the psychological and spiritual dimension of the process. While the philosophical concept of hospice developed in the United States during the 1970's the questions surrounding the appropriate hospice environment have not yet been answered successfully This thesis attempts to give form to the notion of hospice. It attempts to create a place where dying exists within the natural processes of life and is celebrated and sanctified as such.<br>by Tracy Lee Taylor.<br>M.Arch.

This work also intends to demonstrate in which extend the change in social facts influenced the construction of the legal concept of consumer. Within this new concept, consumers economic facet became the most important aspect in the economic relation. In this new conjuncture, the economic subject is no longer merely a part of the economic process, but assumed a new role as an autonomous subject. Besides that, the legal concept of consumer was inspired by the mentality which places the consumer in the center of the economic relation. The need of protection was then diagnosed by recognizing the current importance of the consumer. The value given by Law to the natural concept of consumer is also brought up, giving to the standard consumer the position of end user. In the construction of the thesis, several scientific works regarding the interpretation, meaning and extension of the standard concept of consumer were revisited, mainly when related to the term "end user". The subjects designated as consumers by the Consumers Protection Code are also going to be presented. Lastly, the jurisprudence of the some Brazilian Tribunals is succinctly analyzed. The purpose of this work is to demonstrate that, after twenty years of the Code s enforcement, a tendency has began, changing the standard meaning of consumer. Or, at least, it has started expanding the range of the concept in order to comply with its constitutional ground: the vulnerability of the group<br>O presente trabalho pesquisa o conceito de consumidor, um dos elementos da relação de consumo, critério de identificação do âmbito de aplicação do Código de Defesa do Consumidor.

Paris 7, 1992. http://www.theses.fr/1992PA070022.

Abstract:
We attempted to define the nature of the relation there is in emily dickinson's works between religion and poetry. Dickinson's poems obviously deal with religious themes. Through the poetic reshaping of such themes, dickinson moves towards theorizing language-related issues - where does language come from? What is the precise nature of its symbolic and hermeneutic powers? Such questions are examined in the light of the theological and metaphysical preoccupations of Dickinson's time. We stressed the double side of the poetry religion relation. In her critical way of handling language in her poems, dickinson was led to call into question the role of religious codes as providing a valid symbolic model. She thus redefined a renewed - literary - space that could offer room for the presence of the divine - a sense of the divine which would be freed from its former rhetorical and theoretical prison. We were led to reconsider the aesthetic import of Dickinson's poetry, which we identified as "the sublime". The sense of the sublime, as the ultimate mark left by a vanishing divinity, shows the shifting limit. .

Williams, James. "Polyglot passages : multilingualism and the twentieth-century novel." Thesis, Queen Mary, University of London, 2017. http://qmro.qmul.ac.uk/xmlui/handle/123456789/25985.

Abstract:
This thesis reads the twentieth-century novel in light of its engagement with multilingualism. It treats the multilingual as a recurring formal preoccupation for writers working predominantly in English, but also as an emergent historical problematic through which they confront the linguistic and political inheritances of empire. The project thus understands European modernism as emerging from empire, and reads its formal innovations as engagements with the histories and quotidian realities of language use in the empire and in the metropolis. In addition to arguing for a rooting of modernism in the language histories of empire, I also argue for the multilingual as a potential linkage between European modernist writing and the writing of decolonisation, treating the Caribbean as a particularly productive region for this kind of enquiry. Ultimately, I argue that these periodical groupings - the modernist and the postcolonial - can be understood as part of a longer chronology of the linguistic legacy of empire. The thesis thus takes its case studies from across the twentieth century, moving between Europe and the Caribbean. The first chapter considers Joseph Conrad as the paradigmatic multilingual writer of late colonialism and early modernism, and the second treats Jean Rhys as a problematic late modernist of Caribbean extraction. The second half of the thesis reads texts more explicitly preoccupied with the Caribbean: the third chapter thus considers linguistic histories of Guyana and the Americas in the works of the experimental novelist Wilson Harris, and the fourth is concerned with the inventive and polemical contemporary Dominican-American novelist, Junot Díaz.

Abstract:
After nearly forty years his sister disappearance, who was kidnapped, tortured and murdered by the Brazilian civil-military dictatorship, journalist Bernardo Kucinsky writes the novel `K.´ to tell the story of this family trauma, and thus, to bequeath this memory to all its readers. This monograph not only analyses the novel through a literary perspective, but also looks for history and memory theories outlines. Its first chapter examines the relations amongst memory, history and literature in the search to find the role played by each of them in the fight against oblivion and silence. The second one, delves into the remake of historical events distinguished by barbarity and focuses on the relations between literature and memory. Considering their relevance to the understanding of the novel, the third chapter, however, discusses such subject-matters as some concepts of Jewish culture, mostly those referring to memory, history, and death. In the end, this piece defends the need to hand down to future generations the traumatic memories, and most importantly, the subjectivity of feelings involved in these memories.<br>Após quase quarenta anos do desaparecimento de sua irmã, sequestrada, torturada e assassinada pela ditadura civil-militar brasileira, o jornalista Bernardo Kucinski escreve o romance K. para contar a história desse trauma familiar e, desta forma, legar também a todos os leitores essa memória.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to explore the feasibility of modelling accidents at railway crossings, and to use this model- to predict the accident risk of innovative grade crossing models- to explain the feedback from accidents, and, more generally, to initiate a process of back and forth between theory and experience that would make it possible to improve models, understand the causes of accidents and improve safety more quicklyThe thesis has 4 main themes:- a "statistical" description of the population of level crossings in France (state of the art ), as well as a bibliography not on models (the only predictive model of LC accidents is that of Stott (1987)), but essentially on the data and known elements that could be used in the models- two models themselves (the behaviour of car and the LC model ) representing what can be done, in the current state of the available data, as a predictive model of risk to the LCs. As the LC model has beeb calibrated on the SAL2 data , this part also contains a validation of the model using other LCs that were not used for the calibration of the model- An example of what can be the mutual enrichment of feedback (the model allows for better interpretation) and models (the analysis of outliers and variance provides avenues for improving the models)- an example of the use of the model to optimize existing LC types, to develop more efficient LCs, but also to evaluate the impact of improvement operations on a heterogeneous LC population.- Among the main conclusions of the thesis are:- "3-aspect" LC behaviour (open, blinking red or fixed yellow before barrier movement, in the process of closing/closing)- a predominance of incidents and accidents due to inattentional blindness, especially when the flow of cars is low- confirmation of European and global feedback on the effectiveness of obstacle detectors at LCs- the interest of a "normally closed" LC for LCs with a low flow of cars- the possibility of safety strategies combining the removal of unfrequented LCs and the LCOD equipping of frequented LCs

Abstract:

Long, K. "Aluminide-based coatings for turbine blade internal cooling passages." Thesis, Cranfield University, 2004. http://dspace.lib.cranfield.ac.uk/handle/1826/11002.

Full text
Abstract:
The development of aero-gas turbines is moving towards more efficient engines with higher pressure ratios and increased Turbine Entry Temperatures. This leads to increases in overall turbine blades temperatures which has resulted in the widescale development of turbine blades with film cooling and Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBCs) which reduce the metal temperature of the blade. The air used for film cooling is directed around the blade by internal passages within the blade, current engines are experiencing hot corrosion in areas of these internal passages, even with internal aluminide coatings. The trend for more efficient engines means that corrosion of the internal passages will become more common, coupled with the inability to inspect the internal passages of turbine blades in service, results in a requirement for an improved coating for the internal passages of turbine blades. The aim of this study was to develop a coating which provides improved corrosion and oxidation performance over a standard vapour aluminide on single crystal CMSX-4 turbine blades material. The coating needs to be compatible with the Rolls- Royce bond coat and the Rolls-Royce manufacturing strategy. The study investigated a number of additions which could be used to improve the performance of an aluminide coating. Silicon was selected as the optimum addition on the basis of performance and ease of deposition. The work then assessed the influence of various production parameters on the formation of a silicon-aluminide coating. It was possible to control the level of silicon deposited in the coating. Performance testing, using cyclic oxidation and salt recoat hot corrosion tests, of various silicon aluminides developed in this programme demonstrated at least a doubling in life compared with vapour aluminide coatings.

Ghazi, Christopher. "Measurement of Fluid and Particle Transport through Narrow Passages." ScholarWorks @ UVM, 2014. http://scholarworks.uvm.edu/graddis/297.

Full text
Abstract:
There are many instances where fluid and particles traveling through a narrow passage, such as a crack in a window or door, have large but sometimes unseen effects on our daily lives. For instance, in the cold months of the year a pressure gradient can exists between the inside and outside of a building which causes cold, outdoor air to flow inside through any cracks; significantly decreasing heating efficiency. This inflow of atmospheric air can bring with it dangerous contaminant particles to the inside of a building. Pollution can also occur inside a structure from internal sources of contamination, such as smoke generation from a fire. This thesis represents a two-fold examination of these phenomena. The first part of the thesis showcases a method for local measurement of air leakage flow rate, which can be used to quickly assess leakage rates across a surface, such as a window. The method uses a small local enclosure with constant volume placed about a region on the structure under investigation, which is depressurized and injected with a small concentration of carbon dioxide as a tracer gas. The time variation of the pressure and carbon dioxide concentration inside the enclosure are monitored and used to quantify the leakage flow rate as a function of pressure difference. Because of the small size of the enclosure, advanced data processing techniques are necessary to reduce uncertainty in determination of the rate of change of the carbon dioxide concentration that arises from sensor variability. Results of a laboratory demonstration of the proposed leakage detection and characterization device are reported for the problem of leakage through a circular hole in a plate with prescribed pressure differences. Experimental results from the laboratory tests are found to be in excellent agreement with results of a numerical simulation of leakage flow through a hole, as well as predictions from a number of empirical equations for this problem found in the literature. The second part of the thesis is a numerical study of particle capture in the entrance region of a crack, which is a phenomenon previously not well understood or accounted for in empirical correlations. The computational domain for laminar flow through a crack consists of the crack channel and both inlet and exit reservoirs that are much larger than the channel width. The simulations examined different mechanisms for particle capture within the channel entrance region, including collision on the inlet reservoir wall just outside the crack channel, collision within the crack channel due to cross-stream inertia imparted by the entrance flow, collision induced by Brownian diffusion both on the inlet reservoir wall outside of the channel and within the channel, and gravitational collision within the channel. A detailed study of the variation of the entrance penetration factor with parameters such as the Stokes, Peclet, and Froude numbers was performed, and comparison of the numerical predictions with different theoretical expressions were made when the latter were available. Validity of the assumption of penetration factor independence was also examined for cases where both entrance region inertia and gravitational settling are significant.

Abstract:
This research thesis examines the dynamics of particle movement from a granular bed in a curved fluid flow passage, for improved understanding of the erosion and sedimentation processes in river beds and slurry pipe flows. Changes to granular bed profiles are recorded and interpreted, identifying unique bed characteristics in relation to flow parameters. A computer simulation is developed for comparison with test results and to recognise of additional flow features of bed erosion and sedimentation.

Qiu, Yang. Thesis, Bordeaux, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015BORD0350/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Many complex transfer phenomena occur in Oak barrels, due to the physical and chemical properties of Oak wood. Coopers want to provide their consumers with more and more advice according to the aromas given by the wood of the barrel to the wine but also according to the interactions between the winery atmosphere and the wine. The aim of this project is to improve the knowledge of oxygen transfer through staves and between two staves. It is also to quantify the parameters that influence the oxygen transfer such as absorption phenomena, type of barrel toasting and oak wood characteristics. This study should bring to light characteristic parameters of barrels according to oxygen transfer in order to give better advice to users. This would allow them to choose the best barrels and know how to implement them. This project uses a multidisciplinary approach. The first part is to characterize barrels is order to suggest hypothesis about transfer phenomena. Then, kinetics of impregnation and desorption of oxygen contained in oak wood are quantified. Moreover, we try to evaluate the quantity of oxygen consumed by polyphenols. Finally, oxygen transfer evaluation is possible thanks to the development of a new cell allowing us to place a piece of stave in various operating conditions and to measure the flux of oxygen on both sides of the cell. Thus, the laws of transfer can be described; modeling of the quantity of oxygen transferred to wine could be done according to the utilization conditions and to the type of staves

Abstract:
Computational and experimental studies of fluid flow and heat transfer phenomena in interrupted-surface passages are presented. The computational investigation was focused on developing and fully-developed (spatially and temporally) laminar flow and heat transfer in essentially two-dimensional regions of the following passages: (1) a straight rectangular duct with spatially periodic in-line plate inserts; and (2) staggered-plate arrays. A second-order finite-volume method was developed, validated, and used to solve these problems. Time-mean modular friction factors and Colburn factors were obtained from the domain inlet to the spatially-periodic fully-developed region for a Reynolds number range of 100 to 600, thus exploring the laminar steady and unsteady regimes. Additionally, various cyclic domains were investigated. In the experimental investigation, single hot-wire measurements were used to obtain ensemble-averaged power spectrums and Strouhal numbers in the fully-developed region of the rectangular duct with spatially periodic in-line plate inserts, for Reynolds numbers ranging from 2000 to 30000.
