Abstract:
Numerical models have been widely used for the resource characterization and assessment of tidal instream energy. The accurate assessment of tidal stream energy resources at a feasibility or project-design scale requires detailed hydrodynamic model simulations or high-quality field measurements. This study applied a three-dimensional finite-volume community ocean model (FVCOM) to simulate the tidal hydrodynamics in the Passamaquoddy–Cobscook Bay archipelago, with a focus on the Western Passage, to assist tidal energy resource assessment. IEC Technical specifications were considered in the model configurations and simulations. The model was calibrated and validated with field measurements. Energy fluxes and power densities along selected cross sections were calculated to evaluate the feasibility of the tidal energy development at several hotspots that feature strong currents. When taking both the high current speed and water depth into account, the model results showed that the Western Passage has great potential for the deployment of tidal energy farms. The maximum extractable power in the Western Passage was estimated using the Garrett and Cummins method. Different criteria and methods recommended by the IEC for resource characterization were evaluated and discussed using a sensitivity analysis of energy extraction for a hypothetical tidal turbine farm in the Western Passage.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article provides an introduction to the theme issue “Archaeology of Service.” We explore how performing service in archaeology articulates with the concepts and practices of community-based archaeology, collaborative archaeology, and the Archaeologies of the Heart projects and their larger purposes of approaching work through a lens of social and environmental justice. We introduce seven articles that describe working in communities around the world, including the Bininj of the Gundjeihmi Aboriginal Corporation in the Northwest Territory of Australia; the Bunun of the Lakulaku River Basin in Taiwan; the Passamaquoddy Nation in Maine (USA); people from 21 First Nations in the province of Ontario, Canada; the diverse communities of Oklahoma (USA); the African American community in Bolivar, Texas (USA); and the people of San Cristóbal Island in the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador. The articles are tied together by the common theme of collaborative work that is built through relationships of trust and is conducted in ways that strive to change the institutional and educational structures in which archaeology is practiced.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT With the exception of summer trips to visit my grandparents, I spent most of my growing-up years 150 miles away from my tribe, the Penobscot Indian Nation on Indian Island, Maine. I obtained a bachelor’s degree in earth science at the University of Southern Maine and spent three years in graduate school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I landed a summer job on a gold project crew with Mobil Minerals Division as I was finishing up my M.S. in economic geology. In 1980, the Penobscot Nation, together with the Passamaquoddy Tribe, regained 300,000 acres in what, at the time, was the largest land claim settlement in U.S. history, the 1980 Maine Indian Claims Settlement Act. In 1984, I went to work for my tribe on the minerals assessment program. The fieldwork encompassed extensive soil surveys, geophysical surveys, and bedrock drilling. About a decade into my work for the tribe, my career began to change as the funding from the Bureau of Indian Affairs ended and the minerals assessment on the trust lands was wrapping up. In 1993, I co-founded and headed the Indigenous arts, non-profit Maine Indian Basketmakers Alliance (MIBA). This work would become my most rewarding and meaningful as it had a deep relationship to my own values system. In addition, I had become a serious basket maker and relied upon a network of other Indigenous practitioners. My evolution from a practicing geologist to an award-winning artist and Native American arts leader and advocate speaks to having a strong sense of identity and belief in myself. Throughout my career, I learned to observe my environment and listen to advice, but ultimately charted my own course.
