Abstract:
Taking a critical approach to the air passenger experience, this book considers the representations, embodied practices and materialities of air travel. It brings the journey to the fore as a complex and meaningful experience, filling a gap in the social science research of tourist behaviour, traditionally focused on the destination experience.

Abstract:
This chapter considers how Walter Pater, singing master of the aesthetes, constantly pushes language beyond the purely grammatical and expositional, in order to think through an idea which may not be simply recoverable as a ‘statement’. Many critics have pointed to Pater’s stylistic tricks of delay and postponement—terms which by their very nature suggest ‘something’ to be delayed or postponed. What is interesting, however, is the way that postponement might be in the very nature of Pater’s thinking, connected to his philosophical sense of life as a non-heuristic, passenger experience. In particular, the chapter looks at his oddly fussy punctuation, especially his dashes, both as a means to notate the rhythms of his writing, but also as a way to signal pauses which radically derail the logic of thought.

Abstract:
This chapter looks at emigrants’ religious experiences in the final decades of the Victorian and Edwardian periods, when emigration took place either in larger wooden sailing ships, or in steamships. These larger vessels made religious encounters across the various classes of passengers less common, but such encounters as did occur are found to be broadly similar to those in previous decades, with both the maintenance of religious difference and new sympathies across religious divides occurring. There were common elements that facilitated this experience. So the conclusion is reached that their particular form of Christianity was important to many emigrants, and the emigrant voyage gave quite a number of emigrants a surprising experience of religious similarity with different Christian denominations. These factors made Christianity a more central aspect of British colonial societies than has been maintained historically.

Abstract:
Africa’s first high-speed transit railway system, the Gautrain, provides an interesting case study of a megaproject that was initially closely identified with the country’s bid to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Completed in June 2012, the Gautrain experiences many of the problems typical of megaprojects elsewhere in the world. This chapter focuses on the three dimensions: public consultation and the role of special interest groups, the issue of costs and passenger forecasts, and the intangible mythical discourses that often surround megaprojects.

Cohen, Margaret, ed. A Cultural History of the Sea in the Age of Empire. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781474207218.

Abstract:
Across the 19th century, maritime globalization expanded at a hitherto unimaginable pace, transforming transport and communications over the seas into oceanic networks at a planetary scale. These networks shaped culture in its most expansive sense, affecting seafaring, warfare, empire, commerce, communications, passenger travel, leisure and science. Authors recover the sea experience of people and groups entangled with and yet neglected in an earlier generation of maritime history focused on conquest, empire, and knowledge. Thus, across a century when Britannia nominally ruled the waves, military control emerges as both opportunistic, harboring slavers, as well as partial, giving agency to mutineers and enslaved crew members, including on the Royal Navy’s own fleet; the wreck of Arctic exploring voyages such as the Erebus and the Terror takes readers to PanInuit exploration over sea ice around the Arctic circle; colonial and mercantile transport in the Indian Ocean reveals the role of lascars, the seafarers of color who for centuries had practiced these waters; on the coasts of industrial nations, the professional establishment of marine sciences depends on the pathbreaking contributions of female amateur naturalists. As part of its revisionary aim, this volume gives voice to the physical environment. Thus, we discover contrasting perspectives about this environment under threat today of European mariners for whom it was deadly and treacherous, and for maritime Aborigines who lived in its shelter. Considering literature and art as well as history, authors further trace how the paradoxes of sea practice shape some of the most memorable ocean fantasies of the Western tradition, fostering both a celebration of work and technology, and a preservation of secular magic in a disenchanted world.

Abstract:
On the floating villages that constituted the close confines of emigrant ships, emigrants found themselves encountering both the religiously like-minded and also different others, particularly in the cramped conditions of steerage. This chapter looks at the way emigrants began their voyage in ports, and how the Anglican emigrant chaplaincy endeavoured to meet their needs there. It goes on to examine the emigrant voyages and the various Christian practices and beliefs of steerage-class emigrants among the British and Irish labouring poor and skilled working class in steerage. Looking at the Christian denominations among these passengers, and draws out major areas of their religious lives, including the Bible, providence, death, worship and hymn-singing, temperance, sex, reading, and encounters between Christians and the religiously indifferent or disbelieving. It concludes by drawing out commonalities many emigrants found across their religious differences, while others found their voyage experience reinforced existing positions and prejudices.
