Abstract:
The implications of travel time uncertainty on the operational efficiency of airport terminals have until now not been examined. With the forecast growth in congestion levels predicted for all modes of transport, not only will travel time uncertainty increase but its impact may increase also. The first part of this thesis covers the analysis of two passenger surveys conducted at Manchester Airport and Birmingham Airport. These surveys had the objective of providing evidence to support or dispute the belief that air travellers react to travel time uncertainty. The research identifies that passengers do react by allowing margins of safety for their access journeys, and that this change in behaviour will modify the arrival distribution patterns at airports. The second part of this thesis examines how airport passenger flows could be altered by a change in the arrival distribution of originating passengers at airport terminals. Three airports - Manchester, Birmingham and East Midlands International - are modelled using a simulation tool and tested to assess how a shift in arrival distribution affects queuing and peak passenger volumes within the airport terminal. The findings of this thesis show that airport passenger terminal operational efficiency is affected by access journey time uncertainty. It also identifies that passenger decision making can only be explained by various combinations of factors. Possible methods of minimising the effects of travel time uncertainty are considered. The advantages and disadvantages of access journey time uncertainty for airports and airlines are discussed. It concludes that, to be successful in overcoming negative aspects, both parties must provide a service that results in customer satisfaction. This is the only sure way to maintain their respective revenue levels and secure their future in what is becoming an increasingly competitive industry.

Abstract:
The right choice between possible types of passenger terminal buildings is the key to a successful airport design project. Historically, in the earlier days of aviation the designer's concern was directed to aircraft and to the adequacy of the ground facilities which each airport provided. As the aviation grew, airport passenger buildings grew more complex and more expensive, to the point of being viewed as a key to the airport's economic performance. In this context, the process of selecting a terminal concept became fundamental for planning and designing airport terminal buildings. However, almost no methodology is available at the initial planning level for the selection of terminal concepts, and very little research has been done in this area.

Terminal Passengers represents one of the most distinctive building types of architecture nowadays and a field of formal and technological experiments that unfolds itself in a series of typologies. Since the beginning of the 20th century, airports equipments were transformed and evolved into different proportions, specially after jet times, in order to optimise the flow, reducing the walking distances for passengers: from terminals to planes. The terminals were rebuilt and extended to adapt to changes and expansion of commercial flight and airplane dimensions; redesigned by architects and following the engineering technical improvements, terminals have come through innovations, which typological classification is one of the main themes of this research. The other subjects developed are: a historical panorama of the international architecture of airports, the birth of Brazilian architecture in this field, and an emphasis on the study of the typologies of some of the most important terminals of Europe, United States and Asia. A sequence of case studies, accompanied by several images composing an iconographic dossier, synthesizes into a classification of contemporary projects of terminal building types, analysing its possibilities of extension.

Abstract:
Ever since the airport was conceived as a permanent building type, airport designers have debated what identity an airport should embody. As a threshold of first impressions, the airport should not only introduce the visitor to the local environment but also represent the identity of a country. The aim of this thesis project is to design an airport terminal that reflects the natural and cultural environments of the islands of the Bahamas. Through its architecture, this building attempts to create an engaging experience for its users: passengers, employees and visitors. Local culture and sense of place are abstracted through architectural ideas, realized in the language of contextual modernism. The synthesis of the themes and concepts explored throughout the design process are presented through drawings and commentary. Precedents such as the Taino cosmos, color and nature, place and culture are used to inspire structural systems, form and aesthetics. The plan of the new airport terminal fulfils the functional program while interpreting the land and sea formations of the Bahama islands; ocean currents and land-sea patterns may be associated with movements of people and machines, converging and diverging within the airport environment.

Abstract:

The international airports has been committed globally with the adoption and management of environmental sustainability practices, encouraged not only by the requirement contained in local laws, but also on the instructions of non-governmental organizations such as the United Nations (UN); by tax incentive policies; by positive results, proven and reported in case studies; and by instructions of international institutions dedicated to the certification of environmental sustainability in the built environment. In this way, this study sought to compile and present case studies relating to environmental sustainability actions taken at airports worldwide and present the main certifications of environmental sustainability for the built environment. After this overview, this work focused on research in the rational use of water, addressing the consumption of water issues in airports and identifying the environmental sustainability requirements, for that focus, recorded in the certification Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and Process AQUA-HQE - High Environmental Quality, in the database of the Sustainable Aviation Guidance Alliance (SAGA), and Memorial Sustainable Criteria for Enterprises (MCSE), prepared by Infraero as a basic guide for the development of sustainable projects of Brazilian airports under its management. To the identified requirements were relate actions, which were compared for the verification of similarities and common goals. This comparison gave a concise set of actions aiming the rational use of water resources, also by reducing the water consumption through the use of economizers sanitary equipment. This has enabled a suggestion to adapt the MCSE, by the incorporation of new actions, for example; as well as the application of some of these actions to sanitary uses at passenger terminal of Vitoria/ES Airport through the development and analysis of scenarios that have concluded the capability of sustainable actions in reducing the demand for water for sanitary purposes in passenger terminals of airports.

Abstract:
Airport passenger terminals, even though a building type born only one hundred years ago, have been the target, throughout the time, of much different solutions, a fact that reveal the great difficulties to adjust to aviation and air transport demands in constant and extraordinary evolution, from the early years to nowadays. The most meaningful design solutions that have been consolidated in time, which have been established as functional concepts, offer an important technical legacy, as well as starting points for the architectural decisions concerning passenger terminals. However, these concepts cannot enclose all aspects regarding to the architectural problem of airport passenger terminals. Many other aspects must be taken into consideration, especially those related to the concepts of identity and place, which must be present in the architecture of passenger terminals, more than in the architecture of any other building type.

Full text
Abstract:
Logistics problems are often complex combinatorial problems. These may also implicitly refer to the processes, actors, activities, and methods concerning various aspects that need to be considered. Thus the same process may involve the processes of sale/purchase, transport/delivery, and stock management. These processes are so diverse and interconnected that it is difficult for a logistic expert to compete all of them. In this thesis, we propose the explications with the help of ontologies of conceptual ans semantic knowledge concerning the logistic processes. This explicit knowledge is then used to develop a reasoning system to guide the logistic expert for an incremental and semi-automatic construction of a software solution to an instantly posed problem. We define an ontology concerning the inter-connected logistics and associated optimization problem. We, henceforth, establish an explicit semantic link between the domains of logistics and the optimization. It may allow the logistic expert to identify precisely and unambiguously the confronted logistic problem and the associated optimization problem. The identification of the problems then leads to a process to choose the solutions ranging from the choice of the precise logistic process to be implemented to that of the method to solve the combinatorial problem until the discovery of the software component to be invoked and which is implemented by a web service. The approach we have adopted and implemented has been experimented with the "Vehicle Routing Problems", the "Passenger Train Problem" and the "Container Terminal problems"

Abstract:
The development of a stochastic motion model allows for using a virtual application environment, to reproduce passenger motion behavior and handling processes at airport terminals. Based on the introduced scientific approaches for microscopic agent simulation, requirements for an application-oriented motion model are derived. The developed model is a substantial extension of a stochastic cellular automata approach, where the deficiencies due to the discrete grid structure are compensated on a fundamental level. The model development is completed by adding agent-oriented environment analysis, route planning, and mid-range agent interaction. The stochastic motion model proves its capabilities for a quantitative reproduction of the characteristic shape of the common fundamental diagram of pedestrian dynamics. Moreover, generic self-organization effects are reproduced by the model. For the application of the stochastic approach for modeling the motion behavior of passengers inside an airport terminal, a comprehensive acqusition of data at Dresden International Airport provides a solid basis. A video-supported tracking environment allows for an efficient categorization of passengers and analysis of their motion behavior regarding to their gender, travel purpose (private or business), group size, and baggage types and quantities. In addition to the passenger-related data, the process time of passenger handling at each station at Stuttgart Airport is analyzed in detail and transformed to statistic probabilities by functional data fitting. Finally, the calibrated stochastic motion model is prepared for passenger dynamics at airport terminals. After the successful development and calibration, the implementation of the motion model in a virtual application environment is accomplished. To implement the terminal structure, the passenger handling processes, and the individual passenger motion behavior common programming interfaces are used as well as specific components for linking model and animation requirements. The application of the stochastic motion models aims at the validation of passenger handling process on the basis of empirical data from Stuttgart airport and at the development of a passenger-oriented process evaluation using Dresden Airport environment. The simulation of passenger dynamics at airport terminals points out that the stochastic motion model reproduces the motion behavior of passengers close to reality. Due to the application-oriented implementation a variety of appropriate solutions are available for future scientific and operational challenges related to passenger dynamics

Abstract:
The subway network is constituted by a number of stations, trains and railways which provide transportation for people in the metropolitan region. As a public service, it should offer suitable conditions for all citizens, regardless of their physical or sensory conditions. The adaptation of existing stations and trains, the construction of new accessible stations and the purchase of new trains have taken into account technological advances and accessibility over the years. Nevertheless, the high number of requests for assistance by persons with visual impairment suggests the existence of factors that interfere with or prevent the independent use of the subway system. This research aims to identify such factors and present recommendations for the development of the design of the facilities and services offered as a way to improve the conditions of perception and cognition of people in various stages of their journey. This is a qualiquantitative research whose strategy is based on the journey of users with visual impairment in stations and trains operated by Metrô in the city of São Paulo, with varying degrees of complexity and accessibility conditions. The application of methods and techniques of Post-Occupancy Evaluation provided evidences for the diagnosis of the accessibility of the user\'s journey considering the legal and regulatory requirements, the best practices observed, the data collected by experts, key people and users with visual impairment. The identification of wayfinding elements favors features that facilitate their perception and, consequently, the spatial orientation of people with visual impairment, assuring safety and independence. The systematization of recommendations permits to suggest additions to existing technical standards as well as to assist the activities of planners, designers and managers in the feedback process of railroad transportation system design, relating the configuration of environments to the management of information and services offered, once they are an integral part of the same context.

Abstract:
A methodology is presented herewith to assist in the systematic evaluation of operational conditions of the vital and dynamic processing facilities of airport terminals, which could enhance planning and management practices adopted for airports. The methodology focusses on the relation between capacity of individual facilities and levels of service that passengers experience in them, whereby important operational aspects of those facilities are examined and analysed. The developed methodology consists of two main parts: Capacity procedure, and Level of Service procedure. The first establishes the relations (Performance models) between demand levels (flows) that may possibly be accommodated by individual facilities, and some service measures of particular relevance to passengers that could be used to assess the performance of facilities when subjected to various demand levels. To accomplish this, simulation techniques are utilized to synthesize required information. In the second, the way by which a framework of service standards could be established is presented. Levels of service are derived by asking passengers (through appropriate surveys) to assess service standards based upon their perception to service conditions at a particular time, and their response to different variations of service resulting at different demand levels. Through this method, Perception-Response models are derived, where they are used in the case studies conducted, to delineate the levels of service for processing facilities of the airport terminal considered.

Abstract:
Studies on level of service are to be found in the relevant literature spanning the last three decades, however, the majority of these focuses on airports in the USA and Europe. The first studies carried out in relation to Brazilian airports were performed in the 1980';s when level of service recommendations were related to the sizing of passenger terminal elements. The carrying out of some applied research which included Brazilian airports is to be noted, but what stands out is the lack of analyses in areas relating to passenger disembarkation. Given that this issue is not commonly dealt with in national and international literature, the purpose of this thesis is to investigate which factors influence the level of service relating to arrival components. This study also analyzes the impacts of increased demand, infrastructure characteristics and airport operational characteristics on the variables of waiting time and available area in the baggage claim areas. In addition to this, the analysis of quality and service conditions at five Brazilian airports is also justified on the basis of the saturation capacity at major airports in Brazil, the limited possibilities of developing new airports in major cities and the holding of the World Cup in Brazil in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016. The methodology used in this thesis combines: (i) user monitoring techniques, (ii) infrastructure analysis, (iii) simulation models and (iv) methods of Design of Experiments (DOE) using Orthogonal Arrays and Linear Regression. In this thesis 496 passengers were observed in detail at the arrival components and a simulation model was developed to analyze operations and generate level of service indicators under various alternative scenarios. The validation of the model was conducted in comparison with real system results. 720 scenarios for domestic baggage claim facilities were analyzed and different combinations of conveyor dimensions, waiting time at the baggage claim area, the proportion of passengers with two bags, and the number of passport control desks were tested. The results indicate that the level of service offered could be significantly improved by managerial decisions mainly related to the time the baggage takes to get from the aircraft to the carousel and the time passengers take to get from the aircraft to the carousel. The aim of this thesis is to make a contribution to the academic community, as well as to airport managers and the regulatory agency. By improving the standards of level of service offered by an airport, other goals can be achieved, for example, those related to improving the performance and quality of services, increasing competitive advantage, attracting new businesses and increasing airport customer satisfaction.

Abstract:
In the last decades, the rapid advancement of the national airport sector, due to the economic and population growth, exposed the infrastructure and the Brazilian air transportation route, making the airports limited to the housing poles with better structure. The increase in the transported passenger flow on the airline sector, in this moment, has compelled the planning and construction of the public sector for the expansion of the airport passenger terminals, named in the aeronautical environment as TPS. The observation of the impact and the interaction between the decisions of the architectural design, amount and dynamic of the informations, national and international rules and legislation, which are continually being updated and unbalanced, create determining factors in the design and constructive process. The motivation on the elaboration of this thesis is to fill the gap, regarding the scarcity of studies in Brazil which aim specifically the process of architectural design on the TPS. To make the research the Design Science Research (DSR) method was used, aiming to help architecture designers and design coordinators on the project management of regional airport passenger terminals. The thesis development has been based on the analysis of domestic and Brazilian regional airport passenger terminals, which is a result of the author expertise on the area, on the national and international literature review of this sort of building. A structured terms of reference was created as a result, for the planning of the process of architectural design contemplating elements for the management of program requirements, design flow, coordination and compatibility of the architectural design with the other specific designs, legislation, rules, agents, institutions, concessions, and public agencies, providing basic guidelines for the process of TPS design.

Facility layout is an important research issue in manufacturing management discipline. A well layout design can improve the overall executive performance of facility planning. Grounded in the facility layout literature, the facility layout theory has been used as a modeling tool for manufacturing and non-manufacturing industries such as logistics service, warehousing, and hospital. The airport terminal provides equipment and space for passenger and baggage services. Therefore, it should provide effective facility layout to facilitate smooth passenger movement. Based on the facility layout perspective, this study adopts the system layout planning to analyze passengers’ process and the relativity of areas at the airport passenger terminals. This study sets up different terminal layout alternatives and establishes a mathematical model for evaluating the plans, and uses the terminal II (T2) of Taiwan Taoyuan (CKS) international airport as a case study. The objective of this study is to minimize flow-distance between areas and find the optimal length and width of these areas. Airport operators can evaluate the performance of alternatives and select the best one. All alternatives calculated by the facility layout model can provide the optimal length and width of all areas. The results show that facility layout may affect the design of passenger route planning and influence the minimum flow-distance in the airport passenger terminal. A comparison of the best layout obtained in this study with the present layout of T2 reveals that the present layout might have greater flow-distance. This problem can be resolved by reducing the number of rows or make concession area alongside the lounge in the same row to reduce passengers’ walking distance. On the other hand, the arrival layout of T2 is similar to the optimum layout that has the minimum flow-distance.

An adequate and practical manual for airport terminal planning is crucial for a planner to successfully plan the terminal facilities. However, the standard manual which is extensively applied to calculate the required terminal spacedoes not take the actual operation situations into account. As a result,it will mismatch the space supplied and the actually needed. To explore the space requirement problems, the associated factors are first examined. It thenfollows with the development of a microscopic simulation model to represent the movement of departure passengers as realistically as possible. This modelis then applied to analyze the peak flow and the corresponding space requirement in a variety of operation environment. Simulation results reveal that different terminal operation environment will result in different space requirement. For instance, the increase of group passengers from 0% to 100% will cause the tremendous increase(3.5 times)of space requirement for check in area.

Keelung port is an international harbor; it is responsible for promoting international trades and shipping businesses. Keelung port has been an important high value cargoes’ access point because of its location close to Taipei city area-a national economic and political center, and big hinterland with many indusatrial products, rich resources and huge population. Keelung port was once ranked the 13th position of world biggest container port, which played an important role for the nation’s economic growth in the past. However, in recent years, facing the strong competition from ports of neighboring countries and the rise of mainland China's ports, Keelung port’s container shipments declined from over 200 million TEU to the current 1.6 million TEU; that situation is seemingly hard to reverse. Although restriction of direct cross-strait shipping between Taiwan and China was lifted since December 2008, Keelung port Keelung has not benefited from the increase of container traffic. Therefore, Keelung port must find some business strategies to cope with the severe challenges of the future. Since Keelung port is the nation’s important gateway connecting to foreign countries; it has been provided both passenger and cargo transport services in the early stage of the national development. In recent years, passenger shipping services become more popular due the prosperity of tourism and cruise ship’s tour. Surrounded by the sea and with a mild climate, Taiwan is having good conditions for the development of tourism industry. In addition, the government has also listed the “tourists doubling plan” in the “2008 National Development Plan”. Therefore, the major purpose of this study is to investigate the issues confronted by Keelung port to operate the passenger compartment, which including: the overall planning and future development plans, domestic passenger shipping services, cross-strait direct ferry services, as well as international cruise ships moored at the Keelung port and strategic plans of TIPC (Taiwan International Port Corporation). Through a literature review, statistical data analysis, SWOT analysis and personal interview, this study analyzes those collected materials and concludes some possible proposals for improving the operation of passenger compartment in the port. The results derived from this study suggest the following business strategies for port of Keelung, which including (1) to redesign stevedoring rate rationalization program for international and cross-strait passenger ships, (2) to actively develop the international cruise home port scheme, (3) to enhance the service quality for international, domestic and cross-strait passenger shipping services, (4) to improve the port’s hardware facilities and CIQS clearance facilities, and (5) to develop yacht terminal. It is expected that results of this study will contribute to the improvement of operations of passenger cmpartment in Keelung port.

Designing for the concept of an air hub requires the provisions for adequate expansion and flexibility to accommodate a much lager level, more transfer, and different kind of demand. This study aims at building the framework of air hub conceptual design methodology that is corresponding with the characteristics of hub operations. The systematic methodology generates the concept alternatives of master plan more efficiently. In practices, experience of engineers, in-depth system analysis, expert knowledge, and case-based reasoning are essential in alternatives generation process. A design database system based on previous design experience is constructed as a basis of reasoning by analogy. Case study of CKS master plan update and the Southern International Airport project, including comparative analysis of outputs from the consustants and this study, is performed to arrive at a general and practical design methodology. The results show that the inverted-T pier is recommended.

Nagy, Andrea Larisa. "Tomorrow's Airport Today: A Holistic Approach to Modern Terminal Design." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/6878.

Abstract:
Modern airport terminal design approaches the needs of passengers on a primarily logistical level. Over time, genuine interest in passenger comfort and satisfaction has become diluted in the face of an increasingly efficiency and money-driven aviation industry. The airport experience has been reduced to getting in and out of the terminal as quickly as possible, simply because there is little incentive to slow down or even go in the first place. Uninspiring interior designs, crumbling infrastructure, claustrophobic spaces, security hassles, and a lack of access to food, shops, services, and entertainment are just a few of the issues that must be dealt with in order to restore a certain level of appeal and comfort. This thesis suggests that a more sensitive and responsive approach to airport design can change an ingrained mentality that characterizes airports as places to be dreaded rather than be inspired by. Over time, stress has become an inherent part of travelling, due largely to incremental increases in security checks and measures. This is an unfortunate by-product of the era we live in and is not likely be changed entirely, as public safety must remain a paramount goal in any airport design. At the same time, architects must feel compelled to design in a way that reduces passenger stress at every point along their terminal experience. Only then can passengers feel free to truly take in the architecture of their surroundings -- an architecture that should aim to satisfy functional and efficiency-related standards, as well as symbolize gateways to new places and embody the essence of flight. The design of tomorrow's airport must anticipate and respond holistically to passenger needs, on both a practical and an aesthetic level, so as to create an experience that manifests in quality rather than quantity. The degree of that response at various airports around the world is what this thesis measures, deconstructs, and reimagines as a foundation for the final design proposal.

In Taiwan, the operations of remote airports undertake the responsibility of the remote islands’ economic development and the general public’s interest protection. However, since remote airports were set up, the load factor of routes decline year by year which makes airlines and the airport operator both face serious loss; the latter also need cross-subsidies from the Civil Aeronautics Administration Operating Fund for a long time. According to above mention, it is important to find feasible solution to reduce the serious operation loss of remote airports given that the residents’ basic transportation needs were satisfied. Consequently, this study will examine whether the Civil Aeronautics Administration can adopt flexibilities through remote airport privatization. This study found that the Civil Aeronautics Administration can only hand over the operation right of Jinmen and Magong airports’ passenger terminals to private sectors. Moreover, government must build up legal source of airport privatization and consider how to establish suitable subsidy mechanism to attract private investment. In the future, the Civil Aeronautics Administration should gradually draw out the subsidy to reduce the government’s financial deficit. In aspect of passenger terminal operation strategies, this research suggested that the development of passenger terminal operation should base on tourism development strategies and air transport development strategies of remote island respectively. In the short run, product-oriented shop is the main commercial strategies for passenger terminal; in the long run, either private or public operators of passenger terminal should further develop service-oriented and individual-oriented strategy activities.

This research is to discuss the wayfinding problems in passenger terminal from the viewpoints of departure passengers, and target at the CKS airport. By the result of questionnaire, try to find the factors effecting the wayfinding behavior of passengers and investigate the relationship connection between passenger’s background and wayfinding behavior. Finally, to determine the degree of expectation and satisfaction for design of passenger’s moving path in passenger terminal. The study aims at the inconvenience of spatial layout, sign systems and any peripheral assistant facilities in passenger terminal, and brings up some suggestions for improving, and provides suggests for airport designer and authority. This research carries out questionnaire in June 2005, amount to 136 valid questionnaires in the non-control area of Terminal I and Terminal II. As the survey of wayfinding behavior in passenger terminals in CKS. The researcher finds the results are as follows: 1. Regarding the aspect of passenger’s wayfinding, it reveals that the once passenger become lost or cannot find the right way, more than half of, the reasons for this situation was that have been the sign systems not clear, inconvenient passenger’s moving path design , lack of sign in decisive point and disposition of floor’s plan. The solution way is to ask the information center for assistance. 2. As for the relationship between the passengers become lost or cannot find the right way, and their social, economic status, there are no significant correlation except sex difference. 3. This research uses factor analysis program of SPSS statistical software to apply Varian rotation on the 17 variables using principle component analysis. After reliability test, 3 factors are concluded: “spatial layout”, ”sign systems”, “peripheral assistant facilities”. 4. In the aspect of the important relationship between the passenger individual attribute and its wayfinding behavior, the research find that the sex and the age have no effect in passenger’s percept the degree of important on wayfinding behavior influential factor(spatial layout, sign systems and peripheral assistant facilities). The certification of affectinge factor between education and wayfinding behavior has discovered that there exists a significant difference: the graduate school passengers have more respect on peripheral assistant facility than the passengers educational are junior high school and below. Moreover, the certification of used experience and the influence factor of wayfinding behavior was discovered that there exists a significant difference: the used frequency 5 of times and over have more respect on peripheral assistant facility than the passengers are first time to used the terminal. 5. Aspect of the passenger’s satisfaction between expect and percept of wayfinding correlation design, carried on the methodology by IPA analysis reveals the passenger satisfaction on airport terminal II is higher than that on terminal I. The possible reason is the terminal I too obsolete and the wayfinding facilities not perfectly. At the end, This research would provide some suggests to the airport authority in case of planning to improve the wayfinding design in the future, for terminal I, the improve key point is “to avoid the passenger’s moving path overlapping”, “sign systems quantity”, “service information counter quantity” and “the inquire computer position”. for terminal II, the improve key point is “appears the frequency for the sign system” and “serves information center position”.

A signage system helps passengers find their way in the airport. The main purpose of this research is to analyze the level of passenger satisfaction with the new signage system launched by Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport in 2011, including parts that need improvement, satisfaction differences with different groups, and recommendations for improvement. Specifically, this study examines the questionnaire survey to explore passenger satisfaction and their feelings for the new signage system. The researcher distributed 300 questionnaires in the waiting room to acquire opinions of domestic and foreign travelers. Foreign travelers are divided into three categories: Hong Kong, Mainland China, and Japan. The result of questionnaires analysis tells that the average passenger feelings toward the elements of the signage system and its display facilities are close to satisfactory condition. Signs for baggage storage and packing are the top priorities which require improvement. In terms of elements, the number and location of signs are the top priorities that require improvement. What is noticeable is that the satisfaction level of Japanese tourists is low. The airport authorities of Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport need to do more researches to explore the part.

With rapid growth in cruise tourism, how to provide a better service for passengers at cruise terminal buildings becomes one of key issues of port authroities. In doing so, this study aims to identify the key factors to passenger consumption at cruise terminal buildings based on empirical sale data. Owing to the sparse berthing schecule, this study can clearly distinguish the daily sales revenue contributed by which berthing cruise ship. Afterwards, the potential explanatory variables are extracted according to the corresponding cruise ships, such as numbers or ratios of passengers those who are originating from, depart from/arrive at the same port, are in a inbound or outbound journey, are in a journey where the study port is the last port of calls, …etc. The daily sales revenue and berthing cruise ship data at Keelung port from June to December, 2015 were collected, then simultaneous and stepwise regression models are respectively estimated by regressing the extracted characteristics of cruise ship passengers on daily sales revenue. The estimation results show that a total of 5 variables, including the ratio of homeport passengers, number of inbound and outbound trips, the ratio of outbound trips, the ratio of passengers departing and arriving at the same port, the ratio of passengers in a journey where Keelung is the last port of calls, have significantly positive effect on sales revenue. Based on this, port authority should provide more incentives to attract large cruise ships to choose Keelung port and stores at cruise ship terminal building should provide marketing campaigns and information to passnegers in advance.

This research takes the cruise passenger centers in the east and west wharves of Keelung Port as the research target, and then proposes suggestions and design guidelines for improvement. The purpose of this study is to: 1. Investigate the current status of the use and maintenance of the Keelung Port cruise passenger center facilities. 2. Investigate the evaluation of the facilities by various users of the cruise passenger center and summarize the opinions of users. 3. Proposing proposals for improvement projects and design guidelines for the current situation of the cruise passenger center. The research methods first review the relevant documents of the cruise passenger center, and then investigates the current status of the space, facilities, operating conditions and property management of the Keelung Port East and West cruise passenger centers. Then use the POE(post-occupancy evaluation) method to conduct questionnaire surveys and semi-structured interviews with operational management units, domestic and foreign passengers, and property management vendors to understand the perceptions and opinions. Finally, review the integration opinions, and make recommendations such as improvement projects and future design guidelines to provide reference for relevant units. The results of this study found that: 1. According to the current situation, the space and facilities provided by the cruise passenger center are: outdoor waiting space and trail facilities, entrance hall space, baggage space, check-in facilities and waiting space, customs clearance space and facilities, boarding corridor and bridge facilities, duty-free shops, etc. Current property management and maintenance work, including building management, administrative services, decoration are managed by the port company; cleaning services, security, electromechanical maintenance are outsourced to professional vendors. 2. According to the post-occupancy evaluation, people generally have a high evaluation of the waiting hall, commercial space, safety and flexibility of the cruise passenger center. For the appearance, the surrounding walking and waiting environment, space capacity, toilets, elevators and escalators, technology environments, and queuing facilities are less satisfied. It is generally believed that priority should be given to improving the direction signs, outdoor traffic environment, insufficient space, building appearance, sidewalk facilities, sanitary equipment, elevators and escalators. 3. Based on the research findings, suggestions for 16 current improvement projects such as appearance refurbishment, surrounding pedestrian walk environment, waiting zone for passengers and vehicle traffic flow, waste disposal operation procedure, mobile quipment support facilities, and dynamic digital signage are proposed; 16 design guidelines for restricted area design, surrounding urban pedestrian space, baggage inspection facilities, shopping mall space, and Direction signs.

Global air passenger traffic grows increasingly. The more passengers in the airport, the more revenue airports will earn. Air passengers using facilities and doing activity in the airport, such as shopping and dining, brings airports non-aviation income. Therefore, airport managers want to understand the behaviors how passengers use the facilities, and try to increase the facilities use in the terminal. The aim of this thesis is to establish an agent-based simulation model of passenger behaviors with movement and facilities use in an airport terminal, then apply the simulation model to set different scenarios to analysis the facilities use in the terminal, in order to help the airport’s operation and management. The data collects in Taipei Songshan Airport international departure terminal by questionnaires to ask the passengers’ facilities use. For data analyses, using k-s test with decision tree find the service time distribution for each facility, and using markov-chain find out the choose probability for each facility. For the simulation model, using agent-based simulation model with discrete-event model simulates the passengers flow and behaviors. There are seven scenarios analyses by using the simulation model: the current situation analysis, peak hour analysis, passengers’ attribute analysis, crowded information scenario, increase facilities use scenario, increase duty-free shop use scenario and store location scenario. By analysis the output parameters: number of use for each facility and total time spent in the facilities for each passenger, in order to realize the behaviors for facility use in the airport terminal and to increase the facilities use.

The comfort of the environment, walking speed and walking distance at airport terminals affect the passenger perception toward service quality at airports. In addition, understanding passenger flow characteristics is essential to remove the bottleneck of passenger movement at airport terminals, and the analysis of passenger flow becomes a necessity when design an airport. Since traffic flow is similar to passenger flow to some extent, this research applied the speed-density-flow relationship found in traffic flow theory to investigate passenger flow at airport passenger terminals. The results of this research indicate that areas such as departure lobby, baggage claim, and arrival lobby seem to reach their designed capacities. A comparison with other research on MRT station or sidewalk reveals that the estimate of density and maximum flowing of this research are lower than one found in other research. The reason of this situation may be that this research didn’t sample the real high passenger density period of the terminal. Second, the level of service of Taoyuan international airport is pretty well. Third, passengers have to walk with their baggage, this may result the density of each area in airport terminal lower than MRT station or sidewalk. On the other hand, the relationship between passenger walking speed and density in the commercial area is not significant. This may result from the shopping behavior in the area. Additionally, passengers usually carry luggage or use baggage carts at airports and this is believed to have negative effects on the movement of passengers. The research validated this speculation.

The main objective of this research is to investigate in the feasibility study of passenger safety monitoring using image recognition and laser scanning. Although image recognition technology has been widely used in pedestrian detection for decades, there are disadvantages about image recognition: (1) Limited immunity to lighting conditions and shading. (2) Occlusion problem. (3) Limited camera shooting angle and position. In comparison, laser scanning using 2D or 3D laser scanners developed in few years ago seems to be a perspective tool of replacing image recognition in pedestrian detection because laser beam is immune to lighting condition and data fusion from different scanner seems to be a feasible way of solving occlusion problem. In this research, we provide a summary of an extensive literature review on two pedestrian detection approaches mentioned above and demonstration examples of passenger safety monitoring are described as well.

Airport passenger terminal is an interface of airside and landside operations. Tightly scheduled flights and processes are its significant characteristics. The demand for air transportation increases rapidly with the trend of globalization and international trade, while the expansions of airport terminals are usually limited due to the constraints of land and noise abatement. Therefore, how to increase the efficiency of passenger processing in the existing terminals has become an important issue. The departure process in the passenger terminal is very important as it is complicated and related to the punctuality of departure flights and the connectivity of connecting flights. Once there occur any incidents or additional requirements on any of departure process frequently incur delay and delay propagation on interrelated process in the terminals, even blocked the whole air transportation system. The security check due to 911 events and passenger health investigation due to SARS are the recent examples. This study develops models on analyzing the delay propagation and control strategies in the departure process of passenger terminal. First, the study develops analytical queuing models on process delay propagation on different types of servers and connections classified by serving single or multiple flights. The study further examines the relationships of consecutive servers and processes to analyze the evolution of the delay propagation. Second, the study further develops an algorithm based on label correcting algorithm to find the critical departure process, which shows the longest process path and time of each flight. Furthermore, the study formulates delay cost functions for passengers, airline, and airport operators and proposes control strategies to minimize delay and delay propagation in the passenger departure process. The proposed strategies include set up the close time for each flight in each process, providing the extra server, and the initiating priority service for the emergent flight. The study also analyzes the degrees of delay propagation for different types of process layout, such as 911 and SARS, etc. Finally, the study uses CKS passenger terminal as an example to demonstrate the application and feasibility of the developed models. The results show that delay can be dispersed between un-consecutive servers due to spatial buffer, and to advance the open time for half an hour in departure process would alleviate the possible delay propagations. Moreover the study further conducts sensitive analyses of cost parameters on control strategies. The results show that the ration of delay cost decreases with delay-improved benefit increasing, and the degree of the ration of delay cost increases with the scale of delay-improved benefit increasing. The results of this study provide guidances on designing airport passenger terminal process and controlling process delay in practice.
