Abstract:
The aim of the study was to examine the effects of morphological structures and fatigue levels of pre-pubescent basketball players on basketball passing skill. Twenty-three male basketball players (age = 10.5 ± 0.71) who train regularly participated in the study voluntarily. The American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) Basketball Pass Test was used to determine participants' passing skills. To determine the fatigue intensity participants were required to perform as many squat thrusts as possible in one minute. The Heath-Carter method was used to determine somatotype characteristics. In the statistical analysis, Spearman Rank Correlation Coefficient was used in determining the level of relationship between parameters, while Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test was used to determine the difference between rest passing skill and fatigue passing skill. The endomorphic structure had a negative correlation with rest passing and fatigue passing scores (rho = -0.42, -0.55; p <0.05, p <0.01, respectively). The mesomorphic structure had a negative correlation with fatigue passing score (rho = -0.45; p <0.05). A moderate positive correlation was found with the fatigue passing score of the ectomorpic structure (rho = 0.58, p <0.01). Significant differences were found between the passing scores of basketball players' rest and fatigue (p<0.01). As a result, it was determined that both rest and fatigue passing scores decreased with the increased of the endomorphic structure representing the fatness feature and also fatigue passing scores decreased with the increased of the mesomorphic structure. But, fatigue passing score increased with the increased of the ectomorphic structures of basketball players. In addition, the results of the study showed that as the fatigue levels of pre-pubescent basketball players increased, the passing skill levels decreased.

Abstract:
This study examined the effectiveness of instructional self-talk on acquiring and performing three basketball skills (dribbling, passing, and shooting). Sixty-two young, novice players were organized into two groups. The experimental group accompanied the practice of three specific drills with self-talk. The control group performed the same drills traditionally. Six assessment sessions were completed. Repeated measures MANOVAs showed that experimental group participants performed better than their control group counterparts when dribbling and passing. Experimental group participants and their coaches reported using self-talk more when passing and dribbling and less when shooting. In addition, experimental group participants achieved significantly better dribbling and passing scores (p < .05) between assessment sessions. These results support instructional self-talk as an effective tool for skill acquisition and performance enhancement of skills low in complexity.

Abstract:
Purpose: To evaluate the effect of multiple sets of repeated-sprint-ability (RSA)-induced fatigue on subsequent passing-skill performance in field hockey players. Methods: A total of 10 elite U-21 (under-21) male field hockey players performed 5 sets of a combination of RSA test (6 × 20 m, 20 s of passive recovery) followed by a 1-min passing-skill test (passing reception with subsequent passes at a predesigned target). Data on fastest sprint time and cumulated sprint time for RSA test; total number of balls played, targeted, and passing accuracy (number of balls targeted/total number of balls played) for passing-skill test; heart rate (HR), blood lactate concentration (BLa), and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) were collected throughout the protocol. Results: RSA performance was significantly impaired from set 1 to set 5 (fastest sprint time +4.1%, P < .001; cumulated sprint time +2.3%, P < .01). For a similar average number of balls played (12.8 [1.4]) during each set, number of balls targeted (−1.7%, P < .05) and passing accuracy (−3.1%, P < .05) decreased up to the third set before reimproving over the last 2 sets. Psychophysiological responses (HR, BLa, and RPE) progressively increased (P < .05) toward protocol cessation. The decrease in passing accuracy with increasing RSA cumulated sprint time was fitted to a 2nd-order polynomial function (r2 = .94, P < .05). Conclusion: Multiple-set RSA-induced fatigue was accompanied by passing-skill adjustment variation, suggesting a complex interaction between physiological and psychological/cognitive function to preserve passing skill under fatigued condition.

Abstract:
A three-group baseline-treatment case history design was used to compare the effectiveness of positive and corrective verbal feedback for improving the skill of passing for experienced male collegiate volleyball players. Sixteen players were blocked into two skill levels, high and low and then randomly assigned to one of three feedback groups, positive, corrective, or no feedback. The head coach gave feedback to the players during the four sessions they attended. Passing statistics were recorded to determine the effectiveness of the differential feedback on the players' skill of passing. Results show that there was not a significant overall decrease in the performance of the positive feedback group. The corrective group did not increase their passing performance in comparison to that of the other groups. There were mixed results with the high skilled corrective passers slightly declining in performance and the low skilled slightly increasing in their performance.

Abstract:
Pension funds play a large role in the UK pension system since the returns of the funds determine how large the total pension will be. The future retirees can choose between active and passive fund management where the active management often is more expensive. In this study 102 actively managed UK equity pension funds are analyzed in order to see if managers have sufficient skill to generate risk adjusted return to cover the cost imposed on the investors. The result implies that the active pension funds in aggregate, before expenses, hold a portfolio that imitates market returns during 2000 to 2012. Bootstrap simulations suggest that only eight funds out of the sample of 102 have skilled managers and six of these managers are skilled enough to produce risk adjusted excess return large enough to cover the expenses imposed on the investor.

Abstract:
Based upon postulates derived from the Developmental Model of Sports Participation (Côté et al., 2012) we tested the effects of domain specific activities (play and practice), as well as sporting diversity during the sampling years, on the development of motivation, passion and skill ratings. The first component of our study required testing predictions that play and diversity during the sampling years (age 5-12 yr) were positively correlated with intrinsic motivation and passion. We questioned elite youth level soccer players (N= 148), across 3 age groups, who were on the pathway towards achieving professional status at the adult level. Overall, we found no significant correlations between play and early sporting diversity during the sampling years with scores of motivation or passion. A small, yet significant positive correlation was observed between accumulated hours in soccer practice and integrated regulation. However, independent analysis of age groups yielded significant negative correlations between hours accumulated in soccer practice and measures of intrinsic motivation (Under 15 yr) and harmonious passion (Under 17 yr). The second study component investigated associations between time spent in soccer activities during the sampling years and across participants’ full careers as well as sporting diversity with coach ratings of skill. For the U17 group, hours accumulated in organized practice were related to creative and overall skill, while accumulated hours in soccer practice were related to technical skill for the U15 group. Moreover, for the U17 group, % accumulated hours in play negatively correlated with technical and overall skill ratings. The youngest group (U13) showed a different pattern of results to the older players, with more hours in play (% and total) related to creative skill. Due to these overall relationships, we conclude that recommendations towards early sporting diversity and more time in deliberate play activities (i.e., individually-led practice or play) should be treated with caution, because they do not inoculate against any hypothesized negative effects of early specialization in sport and are negatively related to predictors of skill (at least for the older players). Follow-up longitudinal analysis is recommended to determine how these practice and motivation variables are related to future success.

Abstract:
An educational framework proposed by Chi (2009) aims to link overt study activities with outcomes via the underlying cognitive processes experienced by learners. Activities are classified along a continuum of passive, active, and constructive . Overt activities--¬such as reading, highlighting, and self-explaining--are grouped according to the hypothesized cognitive processes they engage. The framework posits that constructive activities yield the best learning, passive yield the poorest, and active is somewhere in between. Although these hypotheses are not supported by this experiment, there is evidence to suggest that college students employ study techniques that go beyond what they are asked to do. Also, the content of the text to be studied is potentially an important factor for determining the type of studying learners do regardless of what they are asked to do. In sum, although the framework is supported by many other studies, there might be additional variables that need to be considered when implementing this framework.

Abstract:
The competitiveness agreement of the productive fruit chain of the Department of Huila has prioritized the Passion fruits as a productive bet. The Passion fruit sector is characterized by the dispersion of the planted areas without specialization and like a supplement income of the main productive activity. The main objective of this research was the identification of labor skills of the passion flower producers in Huila and its relationship with the level of regional competitiveness. For that the current state of labor skills has been identified, the link between labor skills and competitiveness for the Passion fruit sector was established and the reinforcement levels of producer labor skills to the sector productivity was also verified. The research method is positivist, the rationing mode is abduction, the search process is the hybrid exploration, the methodological approach is mixed and the access strategy to reality is the case study. This research, in general, determines the labor skills of Passion fruits producers in the department of Huila and establishes relationships between them and the regional competitiveness plan. The search results show a Passion fruit producer with low levels of education, manual work, little use of technology, with low associativity and expectative of official support by government agencies and industry leaders

The purpose of this study is to establish an "e-Drawing Online Teaching System" through five processes - analysis, design, development, conducting and evaluation. In terms of the "Class C skill Certification on the computer-aided mechanical drawing" of National Technician Certification, this meta-material is to develop an online aided-instructional system to enhance the conceptual knowledge of mechanical graphics. In addition, the accumulation of the students’ learning experiences can be managed and shared with students of different years or regions. Thus, optimal solutions can be attained. This study adopted the literature review and questionnaire survey. The literature review is the theory basis of study subject to establish "e-Drawing online instructional system." Subsequently, surveys - e-Drawing online learning questionnaire, and e-Drawing online instructional system evaluation form, along with expert interviews were conducted. The subjects are the sophomores in the Computer Graphics Department at Kung-Tung Technical Senior High School. On the one hand, the population, thirty-four subjects was surveyed through "e-Drawing online learning questionnaire form" after six months of learning via this system, and thirty-two effective questionnaires were collected. On the other hand, ten experts and teachers, who are certified teachnician in computer graphics, were interviewed through "e-Drawing online instructional system evaluation form," and all of forms were collected. According to the study conclusion, the students, experts and teachers are highly satisfied with the "e-Drawing online instructional system." In addition, ninety-four percent of the study subjects passed the skill Certification class C of National Technician Certification in 2006. According to the study, this system can effectively assist students in learning and problem-solving, and support faculty members in the instruction and skill counseling process.

AbstractMany young students dream about a career working with marine mammals. Although marine mammal jobs are limited and highly competitive, there are several ways to obtaining them. But, there is no magic formula to pursue a career in marine mammal science. We describe various skill sets and experiences that can improve your chances. Not the least, it is important to actively work towards your career goals and believe in your strengths. We interview marine mammal researchers to inspire students to follow their passion and pursue a career in natural sciences, which may lead to work on marine mammals. In times of climate change, pollution, habitat and biodiversity loss, there is a huge need for students interested in science, technology, biology, engineering and mathematics, to provoke a general change for the better.

AbstractThis chapter outlines the diversity of ways that project participants have developed and structured their working lives and enterprises. Within these conversations we will gain an understanding of the range of people, personal acumen, skills, and public and private investments that are garnered by these creative entrepreneurs to develop and sustain their practices. Through the lens of Milanesi’s three forms of ‘passion entrepreneurship’: lifestyle, accidental, and hybrid entrepreneur (Milanesi 2018, p. 425), why makers pursue this work, despite the often relatively low levels of income to be derived from creative self-employment, is explored. The chapter concludes with a reference listing of some of the key practical advice offered by the research participants.

Abstract:
The push for English language education has become explosive in Vietnam since the Doi Moi era. It resulted in the birth of the National Foreign Language Project 2020 in 2008 with the adoption of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) (Decision No.1400, 2008) and later the passing of the so-called “Six-level framework for foreign language proficiency in Vietnam” (Decision No.729, 2015) to standardize learning and teaching outcomes across all levels of education. This chapter examines a case study at a major state-owned university in Vietnam to take a closer look at issues related to the adoption of the CEFR in Vietnam. More specifically, the authors assess the writing skill development in first-, second-, and third-year undergraduate students and align their writing gains with the corresponding expected CEFR cut-off scores as defined by the National Project 2020. The authors will then point out the impracticality of adopting the CEFR in assessment and make recommendations on assessment-related policy-making issues for the long-term success of the National Project 2020.

Abstract:
Abstract Non-verbal motional skill plays a very important role in manufacturing. The transfer of the skill is important in two aspects:One is for passing the skill on to others, either from generation to generation or from one place to another. The other is for integrating this information into design. For both of these purposes, the symbolization of motional skill is necessary in order effectively to represent it and to use it. Therefore, in this work, we digitized motion data and allotted attributes to each data chunk and developed a client/server system on the internet. The teacher and the student can teach and learn on their own client machines. Our system pennits the teacher and the student to share the processes of learning in addition to the results.

Abstract:
Remote manipulation during robot-assisted surgery requires proficiency in perception, cognition, and motor skills. We aim to understand human motor control in remote manipulation of robotic surgical instrument and attempt to measure motor skills. Three features, smoothness, normalized jerk score, and two-thirds power law coefficient, estimating the motor skills of surgeons were analyzed. These features were calculated through segments, extracted from continuous end-effector trajectories during suturing, knot-tying, and needle-passing surgical tasks, performed by 8 right-handed subjects on bench-top models using da vinci surgical kit control system. Each subject repeated each task five times. Totally 1567 segments were extracted, 413, 437, and 717 segments performed by experts, intermediates, and novice subjects, respectively. Dynamic change of kinematic properties was analyzed to evaluate the relationship between considered features and motor skill level. Results show smoothness is significantly correlated with normalized jerk score and both features are significant measures of expertise levels. Also, results show the power law is violated by many end-effector trajectories and there is no relationship between obeying two-thirds power law, smoothness and jerk. We conclude trajectory is improved from non-smooth and jerky in novices to smooth in expert surgeons. This property may be used for motor skill evaluation. It is unlikely that obeying two-thirds power law be a valid property of all end-effector trajectories. However, power law coefficient may be a discriminant feature for levels of expertise. The results are also applicable in a home-based monitoring platform, to monitor motor functioning improvement of stroke patients during rehabilitation process.

Abstract:
Abstract With the proliferation of computers at home and in the work place, email, internet browsers, chat rooms, and network bandwidth availability, the traditional concept of skill training passed from experts to apprentices can now take on a new paradigm shift where these skills can be taught over the internet. With the primary goal of developing a general tool that supports the transfer of skill from an expert to a group of users, this paper proposes a new approach to distance learning, which we consider a subset of the above group, from the current one-to-one (or top-down) approach to a many-to-many (or bottom-up) approach. We introduce the concept of a network centric intelligent agent that will support the passing of knowledge from teacher to students.

Abstract. In the process of vocational education improvement, “the integration of class, certificate, post and ability” teaching system reform and practice have been discussed, for the three software application courses of computer-aided design (CAD), building information modeling (BIM) and Glodon engineering quantity software (GQI). The analysis and positioning of “classes, certificates, posts, skills”, “classes and posts docking” to formulate teaching plans, “course certificate integration” setting teaching content, curriculum teaching method design, assessment and evaluation, the above five aspects were analyzed for the corresponding curriculum teaching reform and the study. Practice has proved that the effect has been good: the numbers of students applying for the vocational skill level certificate and the application rate both have increased, and the passing rate has grown up significantly, which has risen from 78% to 98%.

Abstract:
The first two fundamental principles in the ASME Code of Ethics are that” engineers uphold and advance the integrity, honor and dignity of the engineering profession by: I. Using their knowledge and skill for the advancement of human welfare; II. Being honest and impartial, and serving with fidelity the public, their employers and clients…” These principles involve the concept of “the public good” and are properly part of engineering ethics — yet it is difficult to find a good place in the curriculum to address these principles. This paper will present the idea of using community service in engineering as a context for teaching this aspect of engineering ethics. The author has considerable experience in community service projects — related to engineering courses in which project work is required and graded, and also related to projects that involve purely voluntary efforts. Specific examples of projects that have been used will be given. The projects have also been presented as part of the larger Honor Concept that the author has been instrumental in developing for the School of Engineering at Grand Valley State University. “The habit of apprehending a technology in its completeness: this is the essence of technological humanism, and this is what we should expect education in higher technology to achieve. I believe it could be achieved by making specialist studies the core around which are grouped liberal studies which are relevant to those specialist studies. But they must be relevant; the path to culture should be through a man’s specialism, not by-passing it…A student who can weave his technology into the fabric of society can claim to have a liberal education; a student who cannot weave his technology into the fabric of society cannot claim even to be a good technologist.” Lord Ashby, Technology and the Academics

Abstract:
We examine how establishing a competitive Joint Rail Conference Grand Challenges Initiatives can harness the potential of college and possibly high school students to develop solutions or new insight into technical and safety problems plaguing the rail industry, including safety. The rail industry has tended to solve issues internally. However, solutions can often be found in other industries that are either similar or have faced similar concerns. For example, the immediate predecessor of Positive Train Control (PTC), the Advanced Railroad Electronics System (ARES), was conceived in the mid 1980’s by then Burlington Northern Railroad (BN) CEO Richard Bressler, who had read how flight safety and efficiency had been improved by air traffic control systems and avionics developed by Rockwell Collins for the Boeing 757 and 767 aircraft. The information age has further increased the potential for sparking innovation as ideas can spread literally overnight via the internet. Some of the most talented and creative problems solvers are college and high school students, who have been greatly enabled by the “democratization” of information that has given them access to knowledge and skills as never before. Teens can learn nearly any skill watching reputable online videos or even “attend” classes offered by top universities around the world simply using a smart phone or tablet. This has prompted educators like Michigan Tech’s Dr. Pasi Lautala and other to develop extensive online rail educational resources to spark interest in the industry. However, simply passing on information has its limitation, which is why initiatives like the Grand Challenges, and Engineers without Borders have been instrumental in harnessing students to examine key global challenges in engineering, energy, and health care. Moreover, these initiatives have encouraged many students to pursue careers in those fields, even in low- and medium-income countries. For example, in 2012, a high school sophomore developed a new method to detect pancreatic cancer that is quick to administer and detects the disease much more quickly than previous methods, allowing much better chances for successful treatment. We will examine how establishing a competitive JRC Grand Challenges Initiatives can harness the potential of college and possibly high school students to develop solutions or establish new insight into technical and safety problems plaguing the rail industry, including safety. In addition, it will look at how developing a dialog among the rail industry, including the Class 1 railroads, students, and academia can encourage a more top notch, talented students to consider careers in the rail industry.

Abstract:
Parents play a critical role in socializing their children and passing on essential information and life skills. The attitudes of parents help determine what young boys and girls do in life, and how they utilize opportunities and develop the skills necessary to make a comfortable transition into adulthood. This brief is based on interviews with Pakistani parents and describes their aspirations, which are likely to influence the lives of young people. More young people aged 15–24 live in Pakistan now than at any other time in its history—an estimated 36 million in 2004. Recognizing the dearth of information on the situation of this large group of young people, the Population Council undertook a nationally representative survey from October 2001 to March 2002. The analysis presented here comes from Adolescents and Youth in Pakistan 2001–02: A Nationally Representative Survey. The survey sought information from youth aged 15–24, responsible adults in the household, and other community members in 254 communities. A total of 6,585 households were visited and 8,074 young people were interviewed.

Abstract:
In 2015, the Tanzanian government implemented a curriculum reform that focused instruction in Grades 1 and 2 on the “3Rs”—reading, writing, and arithmetic. Consequently, almost 80 percent of the instructional time in these grades was mandated towards foundational literacy in Kiswahili and numeracy skills. Other subjects such as English were no longer taught. Using student-level panel data, we evaluate the effect of this policy on learning outcomes using a difference-in-differences approach which leverages the variation in the timing of implementation across grade levels and cohorts impacted by the policy. We find that the policy increased learning by around 0.20 standard deviations in Kiswahili and math test scores one year after the start of the reform. Timely teacher training on the new curriculum was associated with even larger effects. Evaluating longer term outcomes, we find suggestive evidence that the reform decreased the dropout rate of children up to four years later. However, this was also accompanied with lower average passing rates in the national Grade 4 examination due to compositional changes as low-performing students became less likely to dropout.
