Wortmann, Joseph James. "The effects of differential verbal feedback given to collegiate volleyball players practicing the skill of passing." Scholarly Commons, 1998. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/2617.

Full text
Abstract:
A three-group baseline-treatment case history design was used to compare the effectiveness of positive and corrective verbal feedback for improving the skill of passing for experienced male collegiate volleyball players. Sixteen players were blocked into two skill levels, high and low and then randomly assigned to one of three feedback groups, positive, corrective, or no feedback. The head coach gave feedback to the players during the four sessions they attended. Passing statistics were recorded to determine the effectiveness of the differential feedback on the players' skill of passing. Results show that there was not a significant overall decrease in the performance of the positive feedback group. The corrective group did not increase their passing performance in comparison to that of the other groups. There were mixed results with the high skilled corrective passers slightly declining in performance and the low skilled slightly increasing in their performance.

Jomer, Emelie. "Performance of UK Pension Funds : Luck or Skill?" Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Nationalekonomiska institutionen, 2013. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-205730.

Full text
Abstract:
Pension funds play a large role in the UK pension system since the returns of the funds determine how large the total pension will be. The future retirees can choose between active and passive fund management where the active management often is more expensive. In this study 102 actively managed UK equity pension funds are analyzed in order to see if managers have sufficient skill to generate risk adjusted return to cover the cost imposed on the investors. The result implies that the active pension funds in aggregate, before expenses, hold a portfolio that imitates market returns during 2000 to 2012. Bootstrap simulations suggest that only eight funds out of the sample of 102 have skilled managers and six of these managers are skilled enough to produce risk adjusted excess return large enough to cover the expenses imposed on the investor.

Hendry, David Thomas. "The role of developmental activities on self-determined motivation, passion and skill in youth soccer players." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/43553.

Full text
Abstract:
Based upon postulates derived from the Developmental Model of Sports Participation (Côté et al., 2012) we tested the effects of domain specific activities (play and practice), as well as sporting diversity during the sampling years, on the development of motivation, passion and skill ratings. The first component of our study required testing predictions that play and diversity during the sampling years (age 5-12 yr) were positively correlated with intrinsic motivation and passion. We questioned elite youth level soccer players (N= 148), across 3 age groups, who were on the pathway towards achieving professional status at the adult level. Overall, we found no significant correlations between play and early sporting diversity during the sampling years with scores of motivation or passion. A small, yet significant positive correlation was observed between accumulated hours in soccer practice and integrated regulation. However, independent analysis of age groups yielded significant negative correlations between hours accumulated in soccer practice and measures of intrinsic motivation (Under 15 yr) and harmonious passion (Under 17 yr). The second study component investigated associations between time spent in soccer activities during the sampling years and across participants’ full careers as well as sporting diversity with coach ratings of skill. For the U17 group, hours accumulated in organized practice were related to creative and overall skill, while accumulated hours in soccer practice were related to technical skill for the U15 group. Moreover, for the U17 group, % accumulated hours in play negatively correlated with technical and overall skill ratings. The youngest group (U13) showed a different pattern of results to the older players, with more hours in play (% and total) related to creative skill. Due to these overall relationships, we conclude that recommendations towards early sporting diversity and more time in deliberate play activities (i.e., individually-led practice or play) should be treated with caution, because they do not inoculate against any hypothesized negative effects of early specialization in sport and are negatively related to predictors of skill (at least for the older players). Follow-up longitudinal analysis is recommended to determine how these practice and motivation variables are related to future success.

Bujak, Keith R. "A framework of passive-active-constructive study techniques: a divergence between assigned and reported behaviors." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/37125.

Full text
Abstract:
An educational framework proposed by Chi (2009) aims to link overt study activities with outcomes via the underlying cognitive processes experienced by learners. Activities are classified along a continuum of passive, active, and constructive . Overt activities--¬such as reading, highlighting, and self-explaining--are grouped according to the hypothesized cognitive processes they engage. The framework posits that constructive activities yield the best learning, passive yield the poorest, and active is somewhere in between. Although these hypotheses are not supported by this experiment, there is evidence to suggest that college students employ study techniques that go beyond what they are asked to do. Also, the content of the text to be studied is potentially an important factor for determining the type of studying learners do regardless of what they are asked to do. In sum, although the framework is supported by many other studies, there might be additional variables that need to be considered when implementing this framework.

Jacobson, Marc A. "The effects of sports drinks containing caffeine and carbohydrate on soccer-specific skill performance during match-induced fatigue." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/3252.

Full text
Abstract:
A ninety minute competitive soccer match consists of many intermittent sprints resulting in fatigue, and consequently, a reduction in skill performance. The combination of caffeine and carbohydrate (CHO) has been shown to have ergogenic effects which help maintain skill measures during fatiguing states, however, there has been little research investigating this combination on soccer performance. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the effects of three sports drinks, including a placebo (PLA), a 6% CHO drink, and CHO + caffeine (CCAF; 5 mg/Kg body mass (BM)) on soccer-specific skills, throughout a fatigue-inducing soccer match. Twelve male soccer players completed three ninety minute intersquad matches played outdoors on a grass field in a randomized crossover design. Players consumed 5 ml/kg BM 45 minutes prior to kickoff and 3 ml/kg BM every 15 minutes during match play. Soccer passing skill was measured using the Loughborough Soccer Passing Test (LSPT), shot speed, and 20m sprint performance were measured pre-match, immediately at halftime and immediately post-match. Countermovement jump (CMJ) was measured pre-match and post-match. Heart rate (HR) was measured continuously. Blood lactate, rating of perceived exertion (RPE), and perceived fatigue were assessed every fifteen minutes throughout the match. Urine was collected pre-match for analysis of urine specific gravity (USG). BM was measured pre-match and post-match. LSPT total performance time was significantly better in the CCAF trial compared to the PLA trial at halftime (55.3 ± 10.3 s vs 66.5 ±8.7 s, p = .027). There were also significant improvements in penalty time (CCAF 8.2 ± 7.6 s vs. PLA 16.6 ± 7.8 s, p = .042) and movement time (CCAF 8.2 ± 7.6 s vs. PLA 16.6 ± 7.8 s, p = .028) during the CCAF trial in comparison to the PLA at halftime. HR and blood lactate was elevated throughout the PLA trial in comparison to the CHO trial. There were no other significant findings. Most players (50% - 83%) started all three matches in a dehydrated state (USG > 1.020). The CHO trial had significantly lower sweat rates (0.83 ± 0.25 L/hr) than both the PLA trial (1.06 ± 0.26 L/hr, p = .038) and the CCAF trial (1.11 ± 0.19 L/hr, p = .009). The addition of caffeine to a CHO sports drink significantly improved passing performance (quicker completion time and fewer penalties accumulated) over a PLA. All three sports drinks appeared to be equally as effective in preventing deterioration of soccer skill performance during a game situation. This suggests that the total volume of fluid consumed is of greater importance than the type of fluid. Caffeine appeared to have limited ergogenic effects on skill performance without any negative consequences.

Oppici, Luca. "The role of task constraints in promoting development and transfer of perceptual-motor skill in sport." Thesis, 2018. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/37842/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examined the role that task constraints play in promoting transfer of perceptual skill in sport tasks (futsal and soccer). Transfer of learning is the process of adapting a learned behaviour to a new context. Transfer occurs due to the similarity between a learned behaviour and the behaviour required to achieve the task goal. The similarity of information that guides action between the learning and criterion (transfer) tasks facilitates the transfer process. An individual’s ability to perceive information that specifies opportunities for action (affordances), which underpins skilled performance, has been shown to transfer between similar sport tasks. However, it is unknown how task constraints (e.g., rules, equipment and task goal) influence the development and transfer of perceptual skill between similar tasks. While previous research has been limited to examining acute effects, this thesis showed that practicing a sport skill (i.e., passing) for more than 1000 hours using domain-specific task constraints affected how individuals oriented their attention to perceive affordances. These differences in perceptual behaviour influenced how participants transferred their skill to a new context. Learning the passing skill with shorter time to act and in a smaller space (using futsal constraints) promoted a higher magnitude of transfer to a task with longer time and larger space (soccer constraints) than vice versa. Furthermore, the results indicated that learning the passing skill with a modified equipment (futsal ball) positively transferred to the standard equipment (soccer ball). The modified equipment fast-tracked the participants’ ability to perceive information that specified task-relevant affordances, which, in turn, expedited learning. Overall, this thesis extended current knowledge on the role of task constraints in promoting the development and transfer of perceptual skill. Practitioners are encouraged to manipulate task constraints to facilitate the emergence of functional behaviours that transfer to competition.

The main purpose of this study is to analyze the efficiency of the computer assisted instruction. Briefly speaking, it adopts group teaching as an approach to discuss whether computer assisted instruction is beneficial for students taking class C skill category of web design examination in academic subject. And, the result of the test shows that computer assisted instruction can truly improve students’grades on the examination. This study is based on the question bank of “class C skill category of web design examination” in academic subject, which contains 700 multiple choice questions issued by Bureau of Employment and Vocational Training, Council of Labor Affairs. Because all questions were issued publicly, examinees tend to just memorize the answers to questions without understanding the meaning of computer knowledge merely for dealing with exam. Furthermore, according to the new credit-based system enforced by the Ministry of Education since 2000 academic year, lots of couses regarding vocational subjects and pratical training of the department of data processing were slashed, and then the standard of the examination were lowered. Due to the two facts above, this study took the question bank as a model to design a set of computer assisted instruction, and chose junior students of department of data processing of one senior high school in Taoyuan to be the experiemntal subjects for practicing the instruction. During the experiment, the subjects were devided into two groups, which were experimental group and controll group. The experimental group was instructed in computer assisted instruction of Jin Yuan-Tiked test system, and the controll group was in original mothod. After the experiment, the result showed that the grades of experimental group in class C skill category of web design examination in academic subject was obviously different from the grades of controll group, which meant to adopt computer assisted instruction can definitely student’s grades in the examination.

The study investigated the association among mountaineers’ passion, wilderness skill, flow experience and spirituality from an empirical perspective. In the survey 550 questionnaires were distributed for intermediate level and above mountaineers and 376 of them were collected, 18 of which were incomplete, the total number of effective questionnaires was 358 and the effective rate was 65.1%. The results showed that the mountaineers’ harmonious passion will positively impact the wilderness skill, flow experience and spirituality. The effects of harmonious passion and obsessive passion on flow experience are partially mediated by the wilderness skill. Obsessive passion has positive impacts on wilderness skills and flow experience. The flow experience has the partially/fully effect of mediating between their harmonious passion/obsessive passion and spirituality, respectively. Finally, the implications of current study and directions for future research are discussed.

In this paper, we aim to design an algorithm for a team to play a soccer game on RoboCup Simulator. Our goal is to improve the probability our score. To achieve the goal, we will calculate the conditions according to our mathematical model when the teammates hold the ball. One of the conditions is the probability of success if the player shoot, another of the conditions is the possibility of success if the player pass the ball to it's teammates then teammates shoot to the goal. We can determine which condition is best for us from these conditions. In addition, the formation of a team is determinated by ball area in the tranditional methods. The more change the team formation, the more energy waste for the team members. So, we use the method solving the ping-pong effect[1] in personal communication system research area. When the ball is walk around in buffer area, it's alter formation must be over the buffer line. Thus we can reduce the wastage of the team member's energy. Our experimental shows that tje proposed method can increase opportunity of scores, and reduce 50% of team member's energy.

Abstract:
This paper examines the relationship between grit and learners’ performance in Japanese language learning. Grit is one’s personality trait which is defined as “perseverance and passion for long-term goal” (Duckworth et al., 2007). The purpose of this quantitative study is to determine whether there were relationships between learners’ grit scores and their performance in two different types of Japanese language classrooms:teacher-centered beginning and intermediate Japanese language courses and student-centered Japanese extensive reading courses. Regarding the study of extensive reading courses, students’ subjective evaluation were used to observe their performance instead of an objective achievement test. There were 78 students who agreed to participate in total. Of all participants, 34 students were taking introductory level Japanese, 27 students were taking the intermediate level, and 17 students were taking a Japanese extensive reading course. The results revealed that participants’ grit scores did not appear to be related to their performance in the introductory language course. Interestingly, in the intermediate course, perseverance subscores of grit measured by the 10-item grit scale were negatively correlated with the students’ performance, with no connection apparent between their grades and grit scores. The results might be attributed to some external factors: such as the process of language learning and students’ academic majors. On the other hand, in the student-centered Japanese extensive reading course, some tendencies of positive correlation were seen between participants’ grit scores and the changes of their subjective evaluation between the beginning and the end of the semester. These findings suggest the possibility that individuals’ grit scores are related to their performance in different ways between teacher-centered and student-centered Japanese language learning.

The results: 1. All game long passing 587 times in total. An average of 58.7 times per game, of which the third and seventh screening, then the minimum number of long pass, 43 accounted for 7.32%. Respectively, while the eighth screening to appear on the Datong Team 94 accounted for 16.01% the most. The number of long pass will affect the game's record; will show the team in the overall tactical. "Wide Attack Narrow Defense" principle is also to take swift against the best means of attack. 2. The modern football game against the fierce, in many cases, in order to break-intensive defense, long ball has become the main means of breaking scores. According to the score showed that only the first in I-Lan County, there are significant differences. Others were not significantly different. According to the data found that, in 61-75 minutes of time a long pass 107 times the frequency of 18%, followed by 0-15 minutes "16-30" 76-90 minutes "46-60 minutes" 31-45 minutes minimum. 3. Positions of long pass number by record statistics showed the significant differences. The region's long pass to midfield 260 times accounted for 44% of the highest, followed by defending the region higher than the attacks lowest in the region. 4. In the positional analysis of a long pass by score statistics showed that all reach significant difference. In the full back is 395 times the number of long pass accounted for 67% of the highest, followed by 141 sub-accounts for 24% of midfield, forward/ striker to 51 accounted for 9%. Fast attack can form a shoot. Especially, if a good team has a height, heading, and the block tackle ability, a corner long pass offense will be sharper. In particular, if the team made the implementation of the fixed corner way, kicked out of the corner curvature of the low, strong internal rotation and speed, direction, will not only help teammates increase offensive power, but also make the opponent goalie and defensive players difficult to judge the ball trajectory and impact point. That will caused mistakes performed by the opponent team. 5. students ' kickball benefit analysis, reasons for 61-75 students ' kickball for at least the number of minutes, winning team wanted to stabilize shengju, thus to control the situation, to avoid unnecessary mistakes, so at this stage, the students ' kickball times low. However, in the 31-45 minutes and five minutes before the end of the game, losing team to want to win the game, forcing guards to students ' kickball attacks, direct striker and threatening each other's attacks, time to shoot as quickly, register, this stage is particularly high.

Abstract:
In these recent years, the observation and analysis in soccer has been an area of increased interest and investment. Both clubs and coaches recognize the inherent benefits of this activity to their team’s performance. This report comprises the presentation of my activities during the internship, as well as, the thoughts and reflections that I experienced during those activities and how they contributed to my personal development. I made my internship in an Observation and Analysis department of an elite club, working with the “Under 17 - A” team. This internship granted direct contact and knowledge of the best Observation and Analysis practices in professional soccer, and also, of the best practices in terms of sports training itself, by directly observing the working method of an elite coaching staff. This report also shows an innovative research about the effect of a training program, made on a 360º simulator, on the self-efficacy of the specific skill of passing, in young under-14 and under-13 SL Benfica athletes. During the internship I have also taken part in the organization of an event made in “Caixa Futebol Campus” destined to the furthering of sports professionals called “Sport Science Day”.

Quinn, Paul. "Delayed Versus Immediate Corrective Feedback on Orally Produced Passive Errors in English." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1807/65728.

Full text
Abstract:
Research demonstrating the beneficial effects of corrective feedback (CF) for second language (L2) learning (e,g., Li, 2010) has almost invariably resulted from studies in which CF was provided immediately. Yet teachers are often encouraged to delay CF to avoid interrupting learners (Harmer, 2001). This study investigates how differences in the timing of CF on oral production affect L2 learning and learners’ reactions to CF. Theoretically, Immediate CF may facilitate L2 development by allowing learners to immediately compare their errors to accurate models (i.e., recasting, e.g., Doughty, 2001). The effectiveness of Immediate CF has also been linked to skill acquisition theory because some CF (i.e., prompting) is hypothesized to help learners proceduralize their L2 knowledge (Ranta & Lyster, 2007). This thesis introduces additional theoretical explanations to explain the effectiveness of both Immediate and Delayed CF. For example, reactivation and reconsolidation theory (Nader & Einarsson, 2010) holds that long-term mental representations are susceptible to change when they are recalled. Thus, both Immediate and Delayed CF may help learners alter their incorrect mental representations of language features if that CF reminds learners of those incorrect representations and provides them with accurate models. In a laboratory-based study, 90 intermediate-level adult ESL learners were randomly assigned to Immediate, Delayed, and No CF conditions. Learners took three pre-tests to measure their knowledge of the English passive construction: an aural grammaticality judgment test (AGJT), an oral production test (OPT), and a written error correction test (ECT). Next, they received some brief instruction on the passive. Learners then completed three communicative tasks in which the CF conditions were provided. These tasks were followed by immediate and delayed post-tests. Learners’ reactions to CF were elicited with a questionnaire. Mixed-design one-way ANOVAs revealed statistically significant improvement for all conditions over time on all measures, but no statistically significant differences between conditions. The questionnaires revealed that learners prefer Immediate CF, but that Immediate CF may constrain CF noticeability and learners’ independence, while Delayed CF may cause anxiety or embarrassment. In summary, altering the timing of CF did not differentially affect L2 development, but it did elicit different reactions from learners.

Oosthuizen, Willem Cronje. "Managing the teaching of life orientation by principals at selected former model C secondary schools in the Nelson Mandela Metropole." Diss., 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/13864.

Full text
Abstract:
Life Orientation, a core subject of the South African secondary school curriculum since 1996, is still not taught successfully in the majority of secondary schools. This study was conducted in former Model C secondary schools in the Nelson Mandela Metropole in order to identify challenges and problems with regard to the management of the teaching of the subject. If the subject were managed properly by principals the Departmental outcomes would have been achieved and problems would not have existed. In this study the managerial challenges of the teaching of Life Orientation have been identified by means of mixed method research, in terms of the four main management tasks, namely leading, planning, organising and controlling. The views of principals were obtained through a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The data was synthesised, multi-dimensional management problems were identified and recommendations were made with regard to managing the important subject of Life Orientation.
