Abstract:
Abstract. In this paper we propose new models of two complementary optical sensors to obtain 2.5-D measurements of opaque surfaces: a deflectometric and a plenoptic sensor. The deflectometric sensor uses active triangulation and works best on specular surfaces, while the plenoptic sensor uses passive triangulation and works best on textured, diffusely reflecting surfaces. We propose models to describe the measurement uncertainties of the sensors for specularly to diffusely reflecting surfaces under consideration of typical disturbances like ambient light or vibration. The predicted measurement uncertainties of both sensors can be used to obtain optimized measurements uncertainties for varying surface properties on the basis of a combined sensor system. The models are validated exemplarily based on real measurements.

Abstract:
Vision measurement for non-cooperative targets in space is an essential technique in space counterwork, fragment disposal, satellite on-orbit service, spacecraft rendezvous, because the position and attitude of the target aircraft or the object should be detected first of all in the process. The 2D passive camera loses the depth information and can not measure the position and attitude of non-cooperative target. Several kinds of range imaging methods are alternatives. The traditional triangulation method can provide very high precision range measurement at close range but the nature of the triangulation geometry means that the uncertainty grows when the range increases. Laser radar (LIDAR) based on TOF (time of flight) or phase difference principle is suitable for middle and long range, but it can not fit for short range. A novel structure system is put forward, in which a so-called synchronous scanning triangulation method is adopted combining a LIDAR system. The synchronous scanning triangulation system plays a role at the range from 0.5m to 10m for object’s attitude, and the LIDAR system plays a role at the range from 10m to 200m for object’s position (direction and range). They are merged into one path, and do not influence each other because of using two different wavelengths respectively. This mechanism makes the system more compact and less weight. The system performances, such as the measurement range and precision, are analyzed according to the system parameters. The principle prototype is designed and established, and the experimental results confirm that its performance is promising and can satisfy the requirement for space application.

Abstract:
In target tracking using the passive infrared sensors, the principle of triangulation distance measurement is normally used as the basic method. However, when the target directions are nearly collinear relative to the baseline, this method merely based on EKF and angle measurements produces poor results. To solve this problem, we propose a target tracking solution based on dual infrared sensors in the cluttered environment. This method is a joint estimation algorithm of target motion state and atmospheric parameter such as the extinction coefficient. The method combines the probability data association algorithm with the augmented extended Kalman filter algorithm, into which we introduce the rate of infrared energy absorbed by the sensors at the ends of the baseline as additional measurement vector. Simulation results show that the proposed method performs better than the standard extended Kalman filter method, even in the case that the targets position is near the baseline in the cluttered environment.

Abstract:
Abstract The measurement of the particle size distribution plays an important role in mineral processing. Due to the high costs and time-consumption of the screening process, modern machine vision methods based on the acquisition and analysis of recorded photographic images. But the image analysis methods used so far, do not provide information on the three-dimensional shape of the grain. In the coal industry, the application scope of these methods is substantially limited by the low reflectivity of the black coal particle surface. These circumstances hinder proper segmentation of coal stream surface image. The limited information contained in two-dimensional image of the raw mineral stream surface, makes it difficult to identify proper size of grains partially overlapped by other particles and skewed particles. Particle height estimation based on the shadow length measurement becomes very difficult in industrial environment because of the fast movement of the conveyor belt and because of spatial arrangement of these particles, usually touching and overlapping. Method of laser triangulation connected with the movement of the conveyor belt makes it possible to create three-dimensional depth maps. Application of passive triangulation methods (e.g. stereovision) can be impeded because of the low contrast of the black coal on the black conveyor belt. This forces the use of active triangulation methods, directly identifying position of the analyzed image pixel. High contrast of the image can be obtained by a direct pointwise laser lighting. For the simultaneous identification of the entire section of the raw material stream it is useful to apply a linear laser (a planar sheet of the laser light). There have been presented basic formulas for conversion of pixel position on the camera CCD matrix to the real-word coordinates. A laboratory stand has been described. This stand includes a linear laser, two high-definition (2Mpix) cameras and stepper motor driver. The triangulation head moves on the rails along the belt conveyor section. There have been compared acquired depth maps and photographic images. Depth maps much better describe spatial arrangement of coal particles, and have a much lower noise level resulting from the specular light reflections from the shiny fragments of the particle surface. This makes possible an identification of the coal particles partially overlapped by other particles and obliquely arranged particles. It enables a partial elimination or compensation of image disturbances affecting the final result of the estimated particle size distribution. Because of the possibility of the reflected laser beam overriding by other particles it is advantageous to use a system of two cameras. Results of the experimental research confirmed the usefulness of the described method in spite of low reflectance factor of coal surface. The fast detection of changes in particle size distribution makes possible an on-line optimization of complex technological systems - especially those involving coal cleaning in jigs - thus leading to better stabilization of quality parameters of the enrichment output products. An additional application of the described method can be achieved by measuring the total volume of the stream of the transported materials. Together with the measurement signal from the belt conveyor weight it makes possible to estimate the bulk density of the raw mineral stream. The low complexity of the signal processing in the laser triangulation method is associated with the acquisition of high contrast images and analysis based on simple trigonometric dependencies.

The research aims at analyzing the fear of crime and its consequences on social cohesion and informal social control. The study is based on data collected through a triangulation of qualitative techniques (in-depth interviews, participant observation, and semi-structured focus groups) throughout eight neighborhoods of four European cities. Challenging the initial expectations, the results obtained show that, under certain circumstances, the fear of crime might foster genuine forms of social involvement and problem-solving participation. Nevertheless, the general trend indicates that crime-related anxieties are fueling the emergence of nostalgic, passive-aggressive, and violent forms of identity, which might promote potentially dangerous types of collective action.

Abstract:
Multiple mechanized ocean vessels, including both surface ships and submerged vehicles, can be simultaneously monitored over instantaneous continental-shelf scale regions >10,000 km 2 via passive ocean acoustic waveguide remote sensing. A large-aperture densely-sampled coherent hydrophone array system is employed in the Norwegian Sea in Spring 2014 to provide directional sensing in 360 degree horizontal azimuth and to significantly enhance the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of ship-radiated underwater sound, which improves ship detection ranges by roughly two orders of magnitude over that of a single hydrophone. Here, 30 mechanized ocean vessels spanning ranges from nearby to over 150 km from the coherent hydrophone array, are detected, localized and classified. The vessels are comprised of 20 identified commercial ships and 10 unidentified vehicles present in 8 h/day of Passive Ocean Acoustic Waveguide Remote Sensing (POAWRS) observation for two days. The underwater sounds from each of these ocean vessels received by the coherent hydrophone array are dominated by narrowband signals that are either constant frequency tonals or have frequencies that waver or oscillate slightly in time. The estimated bearing-time trajectory of a sequence of detections obtained from coherent beamforming are employed to determine the horizontal location of each vessel using the Moving Array Triangulation (MAT) technique. For commercial ships present in the region, the estimated horizontal positions obtained from passive acoustic sensing are verified by Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements of the ship locations found in a historical Automatic Identification System (AIS) database. We provide time-frequency characterizations of the underwater sounds radiated from the commercial ships and the unidentified vessels. The time-frequency features along with the bearing-time trajectory of the detected signals are applied to simultaneously track and distinguish these vessels.

Abstract:
Background: The patient is observed to acquire a passive role and the nurse an expert role with a maternalistic attitude. This relationship among others determines the capacity for autonomy in the decision making of patients. Objectives: The aim of this study is to analyse the nurse-patient relationship and explore their implications for clinical practice, the impact on quality of care, and the decision-making capacity of patients. Design: A phenomenological qualitative study was conducted. Settings and participants: Thirteen in-depth interviews with nurses and 61,484 nursing records from internal medicine and specialties departments in a general hospital from 2015–2016. Methods: A discourse analysis and triangulation for these sources were conducted. Results: The category elaborated from nursing records was defined according to the following codes: Good Patient, Bad patient, and Social Problem. Analysis of the interviews resulted in a category defined as Patient as a passive object. Discussion: A good nurse-patient relationship reduces the days of hospital stay and improves the quality and satisfaction of both. However, in contrast, the good relationship is conditioned by the patient’s submissive role. Conclusion: An equal distribution of power allows decisions about health and disease processes to be acquired by patients, autonomously, with the advice of professionals. The nurse-patient relationship should not pursue the change in values and customs of the patient, but position the professional as a witness of the experience of the health and illness process in the patient and family.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> Hybrid sensor solutions, that feature active laser and passive image sensors on the same platform, are rapidly entering the airborne market of topographic and urban mapping, offering new opportunities for an improved quality of geo-spatial products. In this perspective, a concurrent acquisition of LiDAR data and oblique imagery, seems to have all the potential to lead the airborne (urban) mapping sector a step forward. This contribution focuses on the first commercial example of such an integrated, all-in-one mapping solution, namely the Leica CityMapper hybrid sensor. By analysing two CityMapper datasets acquired over the city of Heilbronn (Germany) and Bordeaux (France), the paper investigates potential and challenges, w.r.t. (i) number and distribution of tie points between nadir and oblique images, (ii) strategy for image aerial triangulation (AT) and accuracy achievable w.r.t ground truth data, (iii) local noise level and completeness of dense image matching (DIM) point clouds w.r.t LiDAR data. Abstract:
Background Smartphone use is widely spreading in society. Their embedded functions and sensors may play an important role in therapy monitoring and planning. However, the use of smartphones for intrapersonal behavioral and physical monitoring is not yet fully supported by adequate studies addressing technical reliability and acceptance. Objective The objective of this paper is to identify and discuss technical issues that may impact on the wide use of smartphones as clinical monitoring tools. The focus is on the quality of the data and transparency of the acquisition process. Methods QuantifyMyPerson is a platform for continuous monitoring of smartphone use and embedded sensors data. The platform consists of an app for data acquisition, a backend cloud server for data storage and processing, and a web-based dashboard for data management and visualization. The data processing aims to extract meaningful features for the description of daily life such as phone status, calls, app use, GPS, and accelerometer data. A total of health subjects installed the app on their smartphones, running it for 7 months. The acquired data were analyzed to assess impact on smartphone performance (ie, battery consumption and anomalies in functioning) and data integrity. Relevance of the selected features in describing changes in daily life was assessed through the computation of a k-nearest neighbors global anomaly score to detect days that differ from others. Results The effectiveness of smartphone-based monitoring depends on the acceptability and interoperability of the system as user retention and data integrity are key aspects. Acceptability was confirmed by the full transparency of the app and the absence of any conflicts with daily smartphone use. The only perceived issue was the battery consumption even though the trend of battery drain with and without the app running was comparable. Regarding interoperability, the app was successfully installed and run on several Android brands. The study shows that some smartphone manufacturers implement power-saving policies not allowing continuous sensor data acquisition and impacting integrity. Data integrity was 96% on smartphones whose power-saving policies do not impact the embedded sensor management and 84% overall. Conclusions The main technological barriers to continuous behavioral and physical monitoring (ie, battery consumption and power-saving policies of manufacturers) may be overcome. Battery consumption increase is mainly due to GPS triangulation and may be limited, while data missing because of power-saving policies are related only to periods of nonuse of the phone since the embedded sensors are reactivated by any smartphone event. Overall, smartphone-based passive sensing is fully feasible and scalable despite the Android market fragmentation.

Abstract:
Healthcare has long been marked by the authoritative-physician–passive-patient interaction, with patients seeking help and physicians seeking to restore patients back to health. However, globalisation, social movements, and technological advancements are transforming the nature of this relationship. We aim to identify core values that influence the power dynamic between patients and healthcare professionals, and determine how to steer these interactions towards partnership, a more suitable approach to current healthcare needs. Patients with chronic diseases (10 men, 18 women) and healthcare professionals (11 men, 12 women) were interviewed, sessions transcribed, and the framework method used to thematically analyse the data. Validation was done through analyst triangulation and member check recheck. Core values identified as influencing the patient-healthcare professional power dynamic include: (A) values that empower patients (acceptance of diagnosis and autonomy); (B) values unique to healthcare professionals (HCPs) (acknowledging patients experiential knowledge and including patients in the therapeutic process); and (C) shared capitals related to their interactions (communication, information sharing and exchange, collaboration, and mutual commitment). These interdependent core values can be considered prerequisites to the implementation of the patient-as-partner approach in healthcare. Partnership would imply a paradigm shift such that stakeholders systematically examine each other’s perspective, motivations, capabilities, and goals, and then adapt their interactions in this accord, for optimal outcome.

Abstract:
Like any other discipline, academic writing is equally crucial for law undergraduates to master. Project reports, argumentative essay writing on current socio-legal affairs and research paper writing comprise requisites in academia for law learners. Students’ appropriation of higher order concerns in academic writing is a major challenge for teachers, as the physical classroom discourse community is typically passive and does not give enough opportunities to students to think critically about their writing processes. The teacher is expected to provide feedback to students on their writing, which often leads to the creation of only one feedback centre, restriction of the scope for varied perceptions and formation of multiple small discourses where the teacher is the central point of reference in every discourse. Consequentially, students can fail to develop self/peer-critiques in the ongoing discourse. The present paper has its focus on the recreation of discourse communities using a learning management system at the Law School, Bennett University, India, to promote peer-to-peer learning for honing higher order concerns in academic writing. The paper investigates how law students behave whilst interacting in a recreated online discourse community, benefit through peer feedback, and enhance their knowledge of the academic writing genre of argumentative essays, its subject matter and rhetoric involved. The methodological triangulation of pre-test/post-test analysis, student survey and conceptual content analysis of students’ interaction transcripts support recreation of online discourse communities in academic writing instruction.

Primary data was collected through Questionnaire, interview and FGD; whereas secondary data was also gained from researches, reports and different documents. The quantitative data was analyzed descriptively, and the qualitative data was analyzed using thematic analysis. The result shows that the trend of community participation is found to be decreasing/passive and dominated by the top down or planner centered approach of community participation as it was supported by 72.4% and 86.3% out of 149 and 219 total respondents from vulnerable and less vulnerable kebeles respectively. Incentives to inspire community participation are low and not adequate and resulted in the lack of willingness of the community. Lack of awareness, expansion of open grazing lands, lack of commitment from the people and government side, lack of consistency of Sustainable Land Management Practices (SLM), geographical barriers and others are the observed challenges of CP in the area.

Abstract:
Background Cohort studies represent a strong methodology for increasing one’s understanding of human life-course development and etiological mechanisms. Retention of participants, especially during long follow-up periods, is, however, a major challenge. A better understanding of the motives for participation and attrition in cohort studies in diverse sociogeographic and cultural settings is needed, as this information is most useful in developing effective retention strategies. Objective This study aims to improve our understanding of participation and attrition phenomena in a European cohort study of very preterm/very-low-birth-weight (VPT/VLBW) infants from various sociogeographic and cultural settings to better understand variability and ultimately contribute to developing novel and more “in-context” strategies to improve retention. Methods This study uses a triangulation of multisituated methods to collect data on various cohorts in the Research on European Children and Adults Born Preterm (RECAP) network, which include focus group discussions, individual semidriven interviews, and a collaborative, reflexive visual methodology (participant-generated VideoStories) with relevant key actors involved with these cohort studies such as adult participants, parents (caregivers), cohort staff, health care professionals, and academic researchers. The methodological strategy aims to provide a shared flexible framework of various qualitatively driven methods to collect data on VPT/VLBW adult and child cohorts, from which research partners may choose and combine those most pertinent to apply in their own specific contexts. Data from all sources and sites will be submitted to a triangulation of phenomenological thematic analysis with discourse analysis. Results As of January 2020, in this study, we enrolled 92 participants variously involved with child and adult RECAP partnering cohorts from six countries. Multisite enrollment and data collection are expected to be completed in all seven study settings by June 2020. Findings will be reported in future publications. Conclusions Qualitative research methods are a useful complement for enriching and illuminating quantitative results. We expect that opting for a multisituated study approach addressing the interplay of the lived experience of individuals in both researcher and researched stances of particular cohort study settings will contribute to filling some gaps in the understanding of participation variability and effectiveness of different implemented strategies in context. Moreover, health research subjects have traditionally been positioned as passive objects of study rather than active participants, even though they have the greatest stake in improving health care policies and practices. Including collaborative methods allows us to counteract the “top-down” model by handing over some research control to the very people who are providing the data on which research findings will be based while also acknowledging the value of their involvement. Abstract:
Listening is often view as receptive or passive skill that hard to be measured. Nevertheless, listening is one skill that play a big role in enhancing students’ proficiency in English. Therefore, improving students’ quality in listening is important. According to Al-Musalli, there are four sub-skills involved in listening: 1) literal level, it involves three main types of skill: phonological, syntactic, and lexical skills; 2) inferential level, it related to the comprehension of the text; 3) critical level includes: making an appropriate judgment about the message, the speaker personality, and the topic, and; 4) creative level includes handling verbal and non-verbal communication strategies and responding in the proper way. All of these sub-skills can be used as the criteria to view students’ mastery level of listening. This research only applies three level as a benchmark to know students’ quality of listening, they are: literal, inferential, and critical. The objective of this research is to know the students’ quality in listening skill based on mastery level of listening. The research design is descriptive. The subjects of study are five students who meet the researcher’s criteria. Data collection technique in this research is using test of listening, interview, observation and documentation. The data is analyzed using the model of Miles and Huberman. After being collected, the data is verified using triangulation by method and another researcher. The result of this research shows that students at fourth semester of English Education Department in IAIN Samarinda located in inferential level of mastery listening skill which means their quality in listening can be categorized as good.

This study aims to determine the perceptions of teachers, principals, and guardians of students about the phenomenon of cyber violence against children. The subjects of this study were 4 teachers, 2 school principals, and 4 student guardians. Selection of subjects using purposive sampling technique. The object in this study is the perception of teachers, principals, and guardians of students about child violence in cyberspace. This research is a qualitative research with data collection techniques in the form of observation, interviews, and documentation. The validity of the data uses triangulation techniques with data analysis using an interactive model consisting of data collection, data reduction, display data, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study show that from (1) the cognitive aspects of teachers, principals and guardians of students who know about child violence in cyberspace prevent children from violence in cyberspace. (2) Affective aspects, feelings of teachers, principals and guardians of students are good, if children experience violence in cyberspace feel sad and sad. However, in the context of finding children who experience violence in cyberspace is still classified as passive. Teachers, principals and guardians of students will take action if there is a complaint from the child. (3) Conative aspects, when in school teachers and principals tend to act to prevent violence by advising children, prohibiting the use of mobile phones in schools and not providing internet support facilities for children. At home, guardians provide supervision and advice if children access the internet.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, to examine, on the basis of a teleological time orientation, the differences and similarities between actions that take place before and after the sales and purchases of advanced service solutions; and second, to stress that an active consideration of time facilitates the development of satisfactory service solutions to the service provider (SP) and service receiver (SR) (both) and maintenance of the long-term and complex business-to-business (B2B) service relationships in contrast to a passive consideration of time. Design/methodology/approach The authors have applied a multi-method design based on: in-depth interviews with key informants at software providers and their customers; analysis of textual documents and structured observations of customer-software provider actions; and follow-up interviews. This study is based on four phases in an industry to examine different views to enable data triangulation. Findings Complex B2B service relationships are affected by time in an active way, namely, time in the present is linked to customer expectations and their perceptions through two points: the experience (from past) of the SP and the SR and the service solution, previsualized (from future) before the service is implemented. Each interaction between the seller and the buyer progressively changes the mindset of both from the initial position of each (active consideration of time). Research limitations/implications The paper highlights the importance of an active treatment of time and cross-functional SP teams, since the individual salesperson may not possess the knowledge or resources to successfully deal with SR demands in complex B2B service relationships. Practical implications SPs should train, support, supervise and evaluate the whole team so that it interacts properly and performs appropriate and timely actions toward a successful outcome with their SRs. Originality/value The paper contributes to enhance the understanding of time-oriented sales and purchases in complex B2B service relationships based on advanced service solutions, all of which have rarely been addressed in either previous studies or in theory.

Abstract:
The main objective of the article was to demonstrate and prove the role of the sharing economy in integrating local communities as well as in improving the quality of life of urban residents. The sharing economy is an alternative model of consumption entered around an access to given goods without the need to possess it. The concept fits excellently into the ideas that are at the core of the social economy. Internet groups operating in the area of the sharing economy were analysed for the purpose of the article. Their members either live in or have other bonds with Krakow. They are usually focused around issues important for local communities. In the research, a triangulation method was used, involving a desk analysis as well as a passive observation and a covered participative observation. Such choice of methods allowed for the topic of the impact that the sharing economy has on the integration and the quality of life of urban residents to be analysed. The research confirmed that the sharing economy; as a form of social innovation; influences the improvement of the quality of life. Online groups integrate local communities and have a significant impact on the quality of life of city residents (T1; T2; T3; T4). The bilateral nature of dependency between the sharing economy and the quality of life was noticed. Firstly; the sharing economy affects the shape and quality of the product or service that is the subject of the transaction. It is also crucial to create a general “ambience of a site” in the internet group; which supports and stimulates satisfaction of the needs related to the sense of individuality; authenticity and community. On the other hand; the sharing economy affects the satisfaction of residents through economic; psychological; political and social impacts as well as individual ones; related to, e.g., the development of creativity and the acquisition of new skills

In this paper we study planar first-passage percolation (FPP) models on random Delaunay triangulations. In [14], Vahidi-Asl and Wierman showed, using sub-additivity theory, that the rescaled first-passage time converges to a finite and non-negative constant μ. We show a sufficient condition to ensure that μ>0 and derive some upper bounds for fluctuations. Our proofs are based on percolation ideas and on the method of martingales with bounded increments.

Abstract:
In this paper, we study the trapping problem in the weighted scale-free triangulation networks with the growth factor [Formula: see text] and the weight factor [Formula: see text]. We propose two biased walks, one is standard weight-dependent walk only including the nearest-neighbor jumps, the other is mixed weight-dependent walk including both the nearest-neighbor and the next-nearest-neighbor jumps. For the weighted scale-free triangulation networks, we derive the exact analytic formulas of the average trapping time (ATT), the average of node-to-trap mean first-passage time over the whole networks, which measures the efficiency of the trapping process. The obtained results display that for two biased walks, in the large network, the ATT grows as a power-law function of the network size [Formula: see text] with the exponent, represented by [Formula: see text] when [Formula: see text]. Especially when the case of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], the ATT grows linear with the network size [Formula: see text]. That is the smaller the value of [Formula: see text], the more efficient the trapping process is. Furthermore, comparing the standard weight-dependent walk with mixed weight-dependent walk, the obtained results show that although the next-nearest-neighbor jumps have no main effect on the trapping process, they can modify the coefficient of the dominant term for the ATT. The smaller the value of probability parameter [Formula: see text], the more efficient the trapping process for the mixed weight-dependent walk is.

Abstract:
BackgroundDuchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a rare disease that causes the progressive loss of motor abilities such as walking. Standard treatment includes physiotherapy. No trial has evaluated whether or not adding aquatic therapy (AT) to land-based therapy (LBT) exercises helps to keep muscles strong and children independent.ObjectivesTo assess the feasibility of recruiting boys with DMD to a randomised trial evaluating AT (primary objective) and to collect data from them; to assess how, and how well, the intervention and trial procedures work.DesignParallel-group, single-blind, randomised pilot trial with nested qualitative research.SettingSix paediatric neuromuscular units.ParticipantsChildren with DMD aged 7–16 years, established on corticosteroids, with a North Star Ambulatory Assessment (NSAA) score of 8–34 and able to complete a 10-m walk without aids/assistance. Exclusions: > 20% variation between baseline screens 4 weeks apart and contraindications.InterventionsParticipants were allocated on a 1 : 1 ratio to (1) optimised, manualised LBT (prescribed by specialist neuromuscular physiotherapists) or (2) the same plus manualised AT (30 minutes, twice weekly for 6 months: active assisted and/or passive stretching regime; simulated or real functional activities; submaximal exercise). Semistructured interviews with participants, parents (n = 8) and professionals (n = 8) were analysed using Framework analysis. An independent rater reviewed patient records to determine the extent to which treatment was optimised. A cost-impact analysis was performed. Quantitative and qualitative data were mixed using a triangulation exercise.Main outcome measuresFeasibility of recruiting 40 participants in 6 months, participant and therapist views on the acceptability of the intervention and research protocols, clinical outcomes including NSAA, independent assessment of treatment optimisation and intervention costs.ResultsOver 6 months, 348 children were screened – most lived too far from centres or were enrolled in other trials. Twelve (30% of target) were randomised to AT (n = 8) or control (n = 4). People in the AT (n = 8) and control (n = 2: attrition because of parental report) arms contributed outcome data. The mean change in NSAA score at 6 months was –5.5 [standard deviation (SD) 7.8] for LBT and –2.8 (SD 4.1) in the AT arm. One boy suffered pain and fatigue after AT, which resolved the same day. Physiotherapists and parents valued AT and believed that it should be delivered in community settings. The independent rater considered AT optimised for three out of eight children, with other children given programmes that were too extensive and insufficiently focused. The estimated NHS costs of 6-month service were between £1970 and £2734 per patient.LimitationsThe focus on delivery in hospitals limits generalisability.ConclusionsNeither a full-scale frequentist randomised controlled trial (RCT) recruiting in the UK alone nor a twice-weekly open-ended AT course delivered at tertiary centres is feasible. Further intervention development research is needed to identify how community-based pools can be accessed, and how families can link with each other and community physiotherapists to access tailored AT programmes guided by highly specialised physiotherapists. Bayesian RCTs may be feasible; otherwise, time series designs are recommended.Trial registrationCurrent Controlled Trials ISRCTN41002956.FundingThis project was funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Health Technology Assessment programme and will be published in full inHealth Technology Assessment; Vol. 21, No. 27. Abstract:
Transparent object detection and reconstruction are significant, due to their practical applications. The appearance and characteristics of light in these objects make reconstruction methods tailored for Lambertian surfaces fail disgracefully. In this paper, we introduce a fixed multi-viewpoint approach to ascertain the shape of transparent objects, thereby avoiding the rotation or movement of the object during imaging. In addition, a simple and cost-effective experimental setup is presented, which employs two single-pixel detectors and a digital micromirror device, for imaging transparent objects by projecting binary patterns. In the system setup, a dark framework is implemented around the object, to create shades at the boundaries of the object. By triangulating the light path from the object, the surface shape is recovered, neither considering the reflections nor the number of refractions. It can, therefore, handle transparent objects with a relatively complex shape with the unknown refractive index. The implementation of compressive sensing in this technique further simplifies the acquisition process, by reducing the number of measurements. The experimental results show that 2D images obtained from the single-pixel detectors are better in quality with a resolution of 32×32. Additionally, the obtained disparity and error map indicate the feasibility and accuracy of the proposed method. This work provides a new insight into 3D transparent object detection and reconstruction, based on single-pixel imaging at an affordable cost, with the implementation of a few numbers of detectors.

Abstract:
This study examined the test taking strategies of weak ESL students of an English language proficiency course. Test taking strategies are known as the methods that test takers use as an alternative aimed at attaining correct answers on a specified form of language assessment. The study adopted a qualitative study. The participants in this study were forty-four learners from the Bachelor of Arts Program. The learners were asked to think aloud while reading an assigned text to answer the questions. Four learners’ thinking aloud recordings were transcribed and analysed. Focus group interviews were carried out for triangulation purposes. Data collected were analysed manually. The ESL learners implemented many test taking strategies as they coped with the reading comprehension test. The findings of the study show how ESL students used cognitive, metacognitive, compensating, and social strategies. Participants expressed that understanding and reading the passage allowed them to draw conclusions better in answering the multiple choice questions. The findings revealed that they used a compensation strategy whereby they tried guessing the answers on a number of occasions. The findings of the study implicate teachers’ roles in L2 reading and also to guide the ESL learners in the process of answering reading passage and answer the comprehension questions.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The need for counseling and career/educational services for homeless veterans has captured political and economic venues for more than 25 years. Veterans are three times more likely to become homeless than the general population if veterans live in poverty or are minority veterans. This mixed methods study emphasized a life-span perspective approach for exploring factors influencing normative aging and life-quality of 39 homeless veterans in Alabama and Florida. Seven descriptive quantitative and qualitative research questions framed the investigation. Study participants completed a quantitative survey reflecting their preferences and needs with a subset of the sample (N=12) also participating in individual qualitative interview sessions. Thirty-two service providers and stakeholders completed quantitative surveys. Empirical and qualitative data with appropriate triangulation procedures provided interpretive information relative to a life-span development perspective. Study findings provide evidence of the need for future research efforts to address strategies that focus on the health and economic challenges of veterans before they are threatened with the possibility of homelessness. Implications of the study findings provide important information associated with the premise that human development occurs throughout life with specific characteristics influencing the individual’s passage. Implications for aging/homelessness research are grounded in late-life transitioning and human development intervention considerations.

Abstract:
ere is a growing recognition of the need for interdisciplinarity in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. The purpose of the present study is to identify antecedents, processes, and outcomes of an interdisciplinary, collaborative conference and ongoing collaboration. The Breaking Boundaries in STEM education conference was developed with multiple goals, including fostering collaborative interdisciplinary scientific writing for publication among teacher-scholars who participated in one of three interdisciplinary working groups. One hundred teacher-scholars with interest in STEM education participated in the conference. A comparative study of three working groups from the conference was conducted using a triangulation of qualitative and quantitative methods. Surveys and behavioral observations were completed at the conference, and phone interviews with attendees were conducted 3-4 months later. Groups varied in their readiness to collaborate. Several themes emerged that might explain why one group was highly productive, one group was moderately productive, and one group was not productive at completing publications after the conference. Groups with a narrower disciplinary span, stronger leadership presence, a paper champion, motivated leader, and a leader with a strong recent history of publishing on the topic, were more ready to collaborate, and they experienced faster, smoother completion of publications. Further research and more passage of time, such as a few years, is needed to determine the quantity, quality, span of disciplinarity, novelty, and generativity of the publications over time. The generalizability of these themes to other interdisciplinary collaborative studies is briefly discussed.

Abstract:
Introduction: The ‘first generation’ physician gathers a lot of strength to venture into a world unknown to him. Unlike a physician born to a family of physicians who has a family to guide him, the ‘first generation’ physician only has himself to survive this endeavor. Through the life worlds of a select group of ‘first generation’ physician-in-training, this study seeks to answer the following central question: How do ‘first generation’ Filipino physicians collectively characterize their liminal spaces in transition from medical school to clinical practice? Methodology: Anchored on the Theory of the Rites of Passage, this phenomenological inquiry, intends to surface the lebenswelt or essence of the experience of being the only physician in the family. Respondents comprised a purposive sample of physicians-in-training (residents and fellows), who are the only physicians in the family. Data were gathered using semi-structured interviews. Triangulation and member checking procedures were done to ensure the data reliability. Data were then subjected to cool (categorization) and warm analysis (thematization) using the Colaizzi's method. Findings and Discussion: With all the transcribed experiences summarized and those with the same meaning analyzed, the following categories and themes were generated: The Intending Facet / Purpose: From Uncertainty towards Redefinition; The Thinking Facet / Process: From Perplexity towards Self-efficacy; The Relating Facet / People: From Isolation towards Integration; and The Transforming Facet / Power: From Vulnerability towards Empowerment. It was shown that a ‘first generation’ physician in this liminal space undergoes challenges and struggles during his training in medicine. This served as his Rite of Passage to transition him to someone dreaming only to become a physician, to become redefined with conviction, supported and integrated into the health system, empowered and transformed to the physician he is meant to be. Recommendations: Physicians undergo a lot of challenges and mental stress and it means a lot for trainers to enter into the trainees’ life-world, especially that of a ‘first generation’ physician, so that they can build socio-emotional learning and mentoring programs and counselling services that address different facets of liminal space that the trainees go through.

Abstract:
A three-dimensional boundary-integral algorithm for interacting deformable drops in Stokes flow is developed. The algorithm is applicable to very large deformations and extreme cases, including cusped interfaces and drops closely approaching breakup. A new, curvatureless boundary-integral formulation is used, containing only the normal vectors, which are usually much less sensitive than is the curvature to discretization errors. A proper regularization makes the method applicable to small surface separations and arbitrary λ, where λ is the ratio of the viscosities of the drop and medium. The curvatureless form eliminates the difficulty with the concentrated capillary force inherent in two-dimensional cusps and allows simulation of three-dimensional drop/bubble motions with point and line singularities, while the conventional form can only handle point singularities. A combination of the curvatureless form and a special, passive technique for adaptive mesh stabilization allows three-dimensional simulations for high aspect ratio drops closely approaching breakup, using highly stretched triangulations with fixed topology. The code is applied to study relative motion of two bubbles or drops under gravity for moderately high Bond numbers [Bscr ], when cusping and breakup are typical. The deformation-induced capture efficiency of bubbles and low-viscosity drops is calculated and found to be in reasonable agreement with available experiments of Manga & Stone (1993, 1995b). Three-dimensional breakup of the smaller drop due to the interaction with a larger one for λ=O(1) is also considered, and the algorithm is shown to accurately simulate both the primary breakup moment and the volume partition by extrapolation for moderately supercritical conditions. Calculations of the breakup efficiency suggest that breakup due to interactions is significant in a sedimenting emulsion with narrow size distribution at λ=O(1) and [Bscr ][ges ]5–10. A combined capture and breakup phenomenon, when the smaller drop starts breaking without being released from the dimple formed on the larger one, is also observed in the simulations. A general classification of possible modes of two-drop interactions for λ=O(1) is made.
