Abstract:
Summarizes and critiques David Augsburger's Pastoral Counseling Across Cultures. Expresses doubts regarding the possibility or desirability of intercultural counseling, suggesting instead that when possible more attention needs to be given to referral to culturally appropriate services. Notes that Westerners in other cultures might be advised to involve themselves in research, training, and consultation rather than in direct counseling services.

Claims that emerging therapeutic approaches of psychiatrists and pastoral therapists need to combine medication for biochemical processes and meaning for framing experience. Observes that a pastoral therapist who finds a client resisting and/or rejecting referral for appropriate drug intervention can nevertheless use medication or soma as an explanatory scheme for soul-oriented treatment. Notes that treatment ought to focus on early detection of survival reactions and that drugs take the edge off unnecessary arousal, although dialogue remains necessary to reestablish a trusting relationship in

Abstract:
Student wellbeing and mental health are increasingly a concern of universities. Most universities provide central counselling services and, in recent years, some have introduced wellbeing programs. However, an unrecognised source of support and pastoral care for students is academic staff. This pilot research project explored the experiences of academic staff in one university’s enabling programs in terms of the type of support academic staff provide (academic and/or non-academic), how equipped they perceive they are to support their students, and how this role impacts on them. Abstract:
Pastors are often called upon to counsel people troubled by what may be a diagnosable and treatable condition. Current research suggests that pastoral counselors (PC) are reluctant to provide a referral to a mental health professional (MHP) citing that only 10% of help seekers are referred, leaving millions of Americans to suffer with undiagnosed and untreated mental illness. The current literature indicates that PCs feel inadequately trained to counsel those with mental illnesses and the reluctance to refer is due to a distrust of MHPs. Currently, there is little qualitative research on pasto

This positivist research design project focused on the question: How do parish priests deal with people who are in need of therapeutic counseling? Central to this study was the hypothesis, that priests refer people to professionals, when there is no conflict expected between values and morals of the church and the values and moral of the professional therapist.
