Reflecting on the The Methodist Education and their Pastoral Models is a very rich and broad topic. It can be analyzed and understood by various looks. Obviously it will not be exhausted but the most relevant aspects of this discussion will be highlighted. Since the beginning of the Methodist movement in England in the century XVIII, John Wesley, its principal pioneer, showed special attention to education, godly life, as well as humanitarian actions in trying to reach and meet the needs of the human being of his time in full. His academic training was at the prestigious Oxford University. He dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge always associating it to the Christian faith and the practice of love of neighbor. The result of the dedication of this man has spread everywhere through the missionary work of the Methodist movement which, among many things, founded thousands of schools. In over 250 years of Methodist education, only in the U.S. and Britain were built 1,900 schools. The main point of this dissertation is the rich opportunity to reflect on the direction and relevance of Methodist education in Brazil today, through its educational institutions considering the historical trajectory from its founder John Wesley.

Abstract:
The central premise of this dissertation is that a pastorally sympathetic assessment of cultural bereavement healing approaches in the light of a biblically informed understanding of death, bereavement and afterlife provide a basis for the bereaved to cope with the angst associated with bereavement through death and engenders pastoral care among the Abaluyia. It is noted that although many Abaluyia Christians consciously or otherwise lurch back to cultural approaches for consolation and healing during bereavement, there is a lack of meaningful engagement between the Abaluyia culture and the gospel. The result of this lack of engagement has not been syncretism as commonly assumed but rather parallelism whereby, on the one hand, the gospel is held as though it were alien and whimsical in contrast with traditional beliefs and practices which are perceived as practical and consequential. On the other hand, cultural approaches are dismissed as being part of ancestor worship or superstition and thus contrary to the gospel. In view of these extreme perceptions, Abaluyia Christians often feel guilty for either engaging in or shunning cultural approaches thus raising a pastoral concern in relation to caring for the bereaved. In response to the aforementioned pastoral concern, this dissertation firstly examines the role of cultural beliefs and practices in mediating healing for the bereaved among the Abaluyia. It is suggested that the persistence of cultural models is informed largely by their therapeutic value. Consequently, attention is put on the efficacious beliefs and practices employed by the Abaluyia which include community based approach to bereavement, rituals, systems of inheritance and care, conduct of the bereaved, procedures for forgiveness and reconciliation, hospitality, acts of benevolence and performances. Secondly, the identified cultural approaches are reflected upon in the light of the normative biblical teachings. The reflection is done in order to expose and isolate cultural beliefs and practices that are at odds with biblical teachings. The reflection follows a systematic analysis undertaken to establish the biblical understanding of death and the afterlife as well as a biblical hermeneutical analysis of pertinent biblical passages in order to draw paradigmatic biblical practices in bereavement. It is argued that the biblical ministry of healing in bereavement is rooted in the hope of resurrection and the conception of God as compassionate in his character. Lastly, an integrated pastoral care model, namely, Circle for Pastoral Concern, is proposed as a tool for bereavement healing among the Abaluyia. The proposed integrated model is cognisant of local cultural milieu in engaging in pastoral care for the bereaved. According to the Circle for Pastoral Concern model, the community of believers in their local setting, under the Triune God, form the context for healing.

Abstract:
Can Biblical narratives be applied to the pastoral care of primary school children between the ages of 6 and 13? If so, how are Biblical narratives effectively applied in the pastoral care of primary school children between the ages of 6 and 13? With these questions in mind, this research was undertaken with the goal in mind to eventually put forward a model for the use of Biblical narratives in the pastoral care of primary school children between the ages of 6 and 13. The research was done by making use of the research method of Zerfass (1974: 166). * The basic-theoretical phase of this study was done by means of a study of available literature. It began by an enquiry into the relevant Biblical perspectives on pastoral care and was followed by a further inquiry into the relevant Biblical perspectives on narrative pastoral care. This phase of the study was completed by an inquiry on the basic principles of pastoral care of children, with specific reference to children between the ages of 6 and 13. * The meta-theoretical phase of this study was done by an overview of the handling of children between the ages of 6 and 13 through the course of history in Western society. This was followed by a study of adjacent disciplines concerning the value of a narrative approach to the pastoral care of primary school children between the ages of 6 and 13. The next part of this phase was done by identifying the most common pastoral needs of children between the ages of 6 and 13, by means of an empirical enquiry. * The practice-theoretical phase was done by providing guidelines for the application of Biblical narratives in the pastoral care of children between the ages of 6 and 13. This was followed by an illustration of the application of Biblical narratives in the pastoral care of children between the ages of 6 and 13, by means of case studies. This phase of the study was completed by providing a model for the use of Biblical narratives in the pastoral care of primary school children between the ages of 6 and 13. This study has achieved success by providing a model for the use of Biblical narratives in the pastoral care of primary school children between the ages of 6 and 13. The model was provided within the epistemological framework of a post-postmodern epistemology. This model shows that Biblical narratives can be successfully applied in the pastoral care of primary school children and it also provides practical guidelines in the practical application of it.

The Christian churches, mainly the historical ones have, in the ecumenical dialog, the opportunity to live their faith, and to profess, in a non pre-conceptual manner, without proselytism and with the conviction that the God revelation as Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Ghost) is not restrict to any church exclusively. The theme ecumenism remains vital nowadays due to the cultural and religious plurality present in our society. The investigation s object of this work is the Movimento Ecumênico do Município (MEM) of São José dos Campos SP Vale do Paraíba region. Be part of this movement mainly the historical Christian churches, but are also present the Pentecostal and even the Neo-Pentecostal churches. This research had the objective to study the MEM in the period from 1999 to 2001, between clergy and laymen of the historical churches, focusing on the advances, difficulties, directions and the perspectives from this movement. In this analysis, I detected three ecumenical dialog models: theological-doctrinal ecumenism, institutional celebrative ecumenism and practical ecumenism. The work proposes to find possible solutions for the advances on the ecumenical dialog. The hypothesis is that maybe there is a deficiency of this advance on the ecumenical dialog due to the lack of a common ideal, i.e., lack of a united social action, which would characterize the Christians as authentic. The theoretical structure was based on studies of protestant and catholic theologians who approach the inter-clerical dialog, as well as information and positions from many churches and ecumenical organisms. For the churches historic that belong to MEM, as well as to discover their real difficulties, was accomplished interviews and research in the churches and municipal registry offices. The research, done under a scientific vision, can favor the comprehension that the true ecumenism begins through a concrete action, or, in other words, through practicing the Gospel. This process can lead the ecumenical movement to achieve its objective: the unity on the diversity for the world to believe . Therefore, it leads to the expansion of MEM in the region that belongs to and also its results can be projected in the environments on which is proposed this unity on the diversity

Abstract:
The objective of this practical theological study was to explore to what extent a pastoral accentuation of Christian teachers as role models can result in a new perspective on the teacher-learner relationship in the South African school context. For this purpose, a research question was formulated with the eye on identifying elements of pastoral knowledge and skills to equip the Christian teacher to lead learners by means of a metaphorical deployment of his/her function as a role model towards spiritual maturity. Basic theoretical guidelines were formulated from Scripture to describe the metaphorical functions in the pastoral role of Christian teachers. The function of biblical metaphors such as shepherd, servant, comforter, priest, prophet and king were described. A literary investigation was conducted to explain the educational milieu in which teachers in the South African schooling system operate. In this section of the study, as a result of investigations into related sciences, the following aspects came to light: the question regarding the essence of education; the role and function of the teacher; the role of the learner and also the role of the school as an educational institution. An empirical study was done to gain further perspective on the realities, with which teachers in South African schools are faced with on daily basis, and how they visualise their role in this context. A qualitative research method was done by interviewing Christian teachers. The methodological model of Zerfass was used as a framework, to establish hermeneutical interaction between basic-theoretical, meta-theoretical and empirical aspects. Thereafter my own model was designed to provide guidelines to the Christian teacher to fulfil his/her role, as a role model for learners. Research findings indicate that a Christian teacher?s metaphorical deployment of his/her function as role model can indeed play a vital role in the education situation in the context of the current South African school system. However, there seems to be some uncertainty in the midst of teachers about what exactly the metaphorical functions comprise and the need for further equipment in this regard proved to be necessary.

The present research seeks to analyze the narratives of the trajectories of Protestant Christian women up to their admission to the pastoral office, focusing on the meaning of women’s ordination as given by the female ministers. In this paper, some existing cases in Fortaleza were presented, and the characteristics of a female pastoral care and the models found in this field were noted. The models in the field are found in the equation of “permanence and rupture” variables as related to the biblical model of women which permeates the religious mindset of the female ministers. A qualitative methodology was used with life narratives for the purpose of analyzing their life trajectories, understanding what the process is like in the rise of women to the pastoral office in different denominational settings.

Abstract:
The model of pastoral counseling ministry developed in this dissertation is intended to make visible a comprehensive resource to the pastoral counselor for counseling with African American women. The problem of the dissertation is to make visible theological and psychological-ethical resources for the construction of a model of pastoral counseling ministry for counseling some African American women clients. The model contributes to the conceptualization of the nature, purpose and meaning of pastoral counseling with some African American women who experience themselves as estranged from self, God, and others and who seek Christian Grace. In order to solve the problem, I analyzed the historical and socio-cultural experiences that most African American women share in this culture, in Chapter II. Implications for a model emerged. Traditional theological and theoretical sources informed by the locus of womanist theological response provided a means for developing a model of pastoral counseling ministry that attends to the spiritual need for grace in the lives of some African American women. In Chapter III, the theoretical formulation of Heinz Kohut was explicated and analyzed for its potential to contribute to the theoretical construction of a model of pastoral counseling ministry with some African American women with spiritual concerns. Self psychology method and theory, in conversation my experience, the experiences of my clients and womanist theological criteria, provided a framework for organizing and analyzing data with an emphasis on intervention. In Chapter IV, Paul Tillich's theology of the self provided a conceptual framework for organizing and analyzing the historical, social, and ultimate experiences of the human being. Tillich's theological anthropology, in conversation with my experience, the experiences of my clients and womanist theological criteria, contributed to the construction of a theology of pastoral counseling ministry based on the norm of grace. Chapter V is the first movement for the construction of my proposed model. I constructed a method of practical correlation, engaged a conversation with the womanist, theoretical and theological themes that I had selected as resources for solving the problem of this dissertation. In Chapter VI, I constructed my model, a theology of pastoral counseling ministry with some African American women, using the norm of grace. Chapter VII demonstrates the model based upon my experience counseling some African American women at Georgia Association for Pastoral Counseling in Atlanta, Georgia. Chapter VIII is the conclusion. I summarized the problem of the dissertation and the significance of the study, reported the conclusions of the study, and recommended further research. The significance of the study is that a comprehensive contextual pastoral counseling resource using wholistic variables are now visible to the pastoral counselor for counseling African American women who experience themselves as estranged from self, God, and others and who have spiritual concerns and a need for grace. The variables that are visible include analysis of (1) her personal contextual experiences; (2) her relationship with self, God, and others; (3) her internalized psychosocial images; and, (4) the theory and method of intervention.

Abstract:
In Zambia, it is true to say that people are politically free but materially still very poor, 49 years after independence which was attained in 1964. Many people lie below poverty datum-line and those that are, most hit, are the people living in rural areas. Many people are flocking from the rural areas to cities, leaving the old people, women and children in rural areas and in poverty. The levels of poverty in Zambia have reached a crisis, that even the president of Zambia, His Excellence Mr. Michael Chilufya Sata, acknowledged this fact during his parliamentary address to the second session of the 11th National assembly broadcast live on Zambia National broadcasting Network in September 2012. The church is challenged by conditions under which the rural dwellers find themselves in. As a church, our political liberation is to be transformed and driven by the will to restructuring and healing our society; thus ultimately developing those individuals who are suffering in the rural areas of the country. In Zambia, the church should accept that the missionaries who brought the gospel from western countries worked very well in the area of community development. The missionaries’ work and their care for the poor should inspire the churches today to be willing to help the poor rural people to be transformed. The good thing the United Church of Zambia could learn from the early missionaries is that the Christian church needs to be committed and involved in the plight of the poor. The church cannot ignore the socio – economic issues that affect rural poor communities. The United Church of Zambia should be transformed and made to understand that human liberation is not possible, if the political and economic issues are not equally addressed, a human being is not only the soul but also, consist of body and mind. The Christian church must bring a holistic ministry to the suffering people. The church; especially the United Church of Zambia, should understand that economic freedom is a reality which cannot be separated from people’s daily life. The church should learn to listen and act as ‘a midwife’ and a place of safety. She must be willing to suffer with the poor, for the sake of the poor. While the church is committed to development issues, let it also not lose sight of spiritual issues. Therefore, the church leadership should serve as a role model in human and community development. The Christian church should use the gospel to change the mind-set of the rural poor in order to help them transform their living standards.

Abstract:
The dissertation addresses, through a biblical narrative model, the disharmony at Freedman Chapel Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America. It exposes and addresses the relationship between themes, issues and problems of four lay persons and the themes, issues and problems of the congregation. The dissertation presupposes that the factions of the congregation are manifestations of factions in families that make up the membership. The problems that are unresolved in families show up in interpersonal relationships in the church family. The biblical narrative model used the favorite stories of a test group of caregivers, such as favorite Bible stories, favorite fairy tales and stories heard from visitations to discover disruptive themes in their personal narratives. The themes of the caregivers were themes, for the most part, that surfaced in the narrative of the congregation. From the favorite stories of the caregivers it was also possible to frame the 'world view' of the congregation. A common world view appears to be the bonding agent that keeps this congregation, with its frequent disruptions, together. The results of this dissertation answer, in part, the search of a pastor for ways to address the pastoral needs of four lay persons as these persons are being trained to give care to other members of the congregation. The results show that by addressing the pastoral needs of members of the congregation through the group process, the narrative of the test group can be 'reauthored' and the story of the congregation can be 'restoried.' Through the process of training the laity, an important aspect of self-sufficiency can be realized as the church community is drawn to be a healing community.

Abstract:
The model of an apostolic discipleship to one (MDA) and Pastoral Counseling (AP) constituted the theme of this work aimed to verify the possibility of a dialogue between the two. The methodology used was documentary and bibliographical research. MDA is a strategy that belongs to the Church of Peace in Santarém and is configured to establish a personal relationship with the student. The word in the Old Testament discipleship Halak was literally connoted "go after". In the New Testament refers to the idea of discipleship akolouteo translated as follows: the word denotes the action of the call of a master and go on to have a lifetime of obedience. The Church of Peace in United States considers the following as involving two human beings that one drives the other to Christ because of his maturity. But on the other hand there are theological statements that score, since Christ already there is no immediate relationship, whether between man and God and between man and the world and put any bridge is not healthy for the integral growth of the couple. The Pastoral Counseling constitutes a relationship of care where there is mutual respect in which the trained counselor is a facilitator for the growth of advising on all aspects of life. Not forgetting the culture and context, in this case, we considered the context of Latin America with its poverty and wealth while socio-cultural. As for the possible dialogue between the MDA and PC, it can be said that while the PC emphasizes a lived faith in everyday life, the MDA provides a more personal faith. It constitutes a process of maturation for this dialogue takes place.

Abstract:
This dissertation presented Good-Enough Mentoring as a model of Black pastoral counseling for the Black male pastoral counselor working with African- American men suffering from Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). This dissertation utilized the Self Psychology of Heinz Kohut; the Black Liberation Theology of James Cone; the political cultural discussion of nihilism from Cornel West; and the Afro-centric cultural re-education modeling of Na’im Akbar to treat the intrapsychic condition described by the technical term, NPD. The operating thesis for this dissertation was African-American men could be supported into the achievement of their life goals and dreams via the empathic responsiveness of Good-Enough Mentoring. This type of supportive relationship provided intrapsychically soothing, culturally confrontive, and communally re-educative empathy. The operating assumption of the method was that comprehensive re-education between African-American men was necessary for facilitating African-American male life goal and dream accomplishment. It was assumed that this type of mentoring is better achieved with a Black male pastoral counselor. The problem addressed in this dissertation was African-American male internalization of white supremacy. This is an oppressive European American consciousness that affirms its greatness and superiority in contrast to the inferiority and wretchedness of the African and any other ethnic group. This problem corporately manifests as nihilism, depression that stereotypically predisposes African-American male character and demeanor toward certain convulsive behavior and emotional incohesion.

McCrary, Carolyn LeeNette. "Interdependence as a norm for an interdisciplinary model of pastoral counseling." DigitalCommons@Robert W. Woodruff Library, Atlanta University Center, 1989. http://digitalcommons.auctr.edu/dissertations/AAIDP14680.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation offers an interdisciplinary model of pastoral counseling with 'interdependence' as its organizing principle. This interdisciplinary model relies on the theological concept of Community, according to Howard Thurman, and the psychological issue of dependence as articulated in the Object Relations theory of W. R. D. Fairbairn. Interdependence as a norm for this interdisciplinary Community/Mature Dependence model of pastoral counseling is helpful in that it responds to a need in the field of pastoral counseling for relevant input concerning norms, values and criteria for effective pastoral counseling with persons, particularly those from bi-cultural communities, such as African Americans. In this respect, the African American cultural values of Collective Identity, Family life and Resiliency in Struggle and Suffering form an integral part of this interdisciplinary model. Interwoven with the theological and psychological concepts and the African American cultural values are the clinical cases of two African Americans, a female and a male. These concepts and the cultural values chosen to bring to bear on the counseling relations with these persons are especially helpful due to their focus on the value of communal interrelating and the processes of whole-making. Prominent issues raised in conjunction with the clinical cases are: (1) the fragmentation, splitting and distorted self images that can occur due to improper nurturing in childhood and/or as a result of racism and oppression, (2) the effects of racism and discrimination on personal and familial value systems, and (3) the pain and suffering caused by unresolved conflict involved in the status of being bi-cultural. Howard Thurman, as an African American theologian who, from outside the majority culture and some of its theoretical and cultural constrictions brings to this discussion his unique perspective of Community which grounds all persons and all dimensions of personhood in an Ultimate unity. Thurman, speaking with the insights of one who has suffered racial oppression and discrimination, lifts his voice of sensitive concern and caring to all persons bound in the human condition and outlines the task for the reconciliation of all of creation. Unity, Actualization of Potential, Love and Reconciliation are the four major components of Thurman's concept of Community addressed in this dissertation. My analysis also brings the object relations theory of W. R. D. Fairbairn into dialogue with Thurman, the cultural factors and the clinical data from the two case studies. Fairbairn, deviates from psychoanalytic tradition in that he formulated an alternative interpretation of the core of personality than that advocated by Sigmund Freud. Fairbairn's assertion is that the libidinal ego is first and foremost in need and in search of an satisfying object, i.e., a meaningful and positive relationship with another person. With the help of Thurman, Fairbairn, the clinical cases and African American cultural factors, I highlight the illusory or at best transient nature of independence and the process I demonstrate the need for an appreciation of the nature of dependency, particularly in the context of Interdependence. A three dimensional model of pastoral counseling is presented which elaborates upon the importance of (1) the client's historical situation and cultural values; (2) identification, a proper sense of self and differentiation; and, (3) shared suffering, actualization of potential and liberating and reconciling love.

Park, Soo Bong. "Transformational leadership as a new pastoral model for South Korean churches." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2012. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/3497/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to propose transformational leadership a new pastoral model for South Korean churches. It is argued that authoritarian charismatic leadership has contributed to church growth but, as Korea is changing into a pluralistic society, it has not respond to properly the needs of Koran Christians. So transformational leadership being characterized as both charismatic (visionary) and democratic (participant) is considered as a new alternative since it can meet their new demands for the leadership, which is both effectiveness in evangelism and appropriateness for new changed socio-cultural milieu. Main focus of attention of this thesis is on disclosing the way in which the nature of leadership has to do with Korean religion, culture, and theology. To deal with them the salient features of transformational leadership is first examined in the three dimensions: culture (Confucianism), philosophy (philosophy of life of Koreans), and theology (theology of Korean churches). Then its implication in biblical theology is discussed, which is followed by case studies empirically. In the process it is revealed that transformational leadership can be applicable to Korean churches which, in turn, can give rise to continual church growth and respond to the needs of the times properly.

Abstract:
In this thesis I extend the discussion of the works of W.G. Sebald beyond the more commonly discussed themes of melancholy, trauma, loss and memory. To this end I examine his long prose poem After Nature and his four books of prose fiction Vertigo, The Emigrants, The Rings of Saturn and Austerlitz to expose underlying pastoral modes and structural forms in these texts. In After Nature I make the case for this poem to be read as an anti-pastoral text which runs true to the elegiac form but exhibits a subtext of pastoral and anti-pastoral tension. The first published work of prose fiction, Vertigo, I argue demonstrates the pastoral structural device, integral to pastoral form, of the double-plot and in so doing, extend William Empson’s original thesis. In The Emigrants, I examine the parallels between Heimat and Pastoral by exposing the characters’ difficult relationships with displacement both physically and psychologically and argue for an anti-Heimat mode expressed largely in anti-pastoral imagery. The Rings of Saturn demonstrates the impossibility of utopia by constantly deferring a potential pastoral both spatially and temporally during the narrator’s “pilgrimage” across the Suffolk countryside. And finally in Austerlitz, we have a coalescence of pastoral modes structured as a discourse of retreat and return which, I argue, qualifies this work as a truly pastoral novel. In the final chapter I discuss the four short pieces of prose fiction in Campo Santo, which, although too brief to exhibit a pastoral form, demonstrate pastoral tropes commensurate with those discussed in the previous works.

Lee, Chang Young. "Married migrant women living within Korean multicultural families : a pastoral narrative perspective." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/40206.

Full text
Abstract:
This research seeks to adopt a post-foundationalist practical theology paradigm, as discussed by J C Müller, in order to create a bridge between the three concepts of the pastoral care perspective, the narrative perspective based on social-constructionism and post-foundationalism. Furthermore, I made use of Müller’s seven movements of methodology which laid a strong foundation to base my research on regarding married migrant women living within Korean multicultural families. Korean society which is a homogeneous culture is currently facing many challenges as a result of becoming more and more multicultural. These multicultural issues are becoming major social and political issues in South Korea. The main reason that South Korean society has become more multicultural is because of intercultural marriages which have also resulted in an increase in multicultural families. These migrant women are faced with many kinds of discrimination and prejudice as a result of their different appearance, culture and language. Furthermore, Korean culture often deprives women of having any position above men especially once they are married. After being married a woman should become invisible, voiceless, and nameless in order to become culturally acceptable. This often results in a migrant woman feeling stressed, fearful, isolated and alone which often results in the development of a low self-esteem, a lack of self-confidence and a low self-image. In my research, I sought to listen to and identify the stories of migrant women, namely foreign women who have married Korean men with a focus on the impact on their identities within a Korean multicultural family through a narrative perspective in order to have a positive growth and outcome from their intercultural differences within South Korea. I decided to view my co-researchers not as co-researchers but as companions on a journey which we could undertake together. The use of the metaphors ‘journey’ and ‘companions’ seemed to give my companions the freedom to speak more openly and placed us on an equal level. Furthermore, I not only discovered my companions’ identities through their own stories, but also developed my companions’ true identities/multi-identities through the broader, inter-relational stories of other people within multicultural communities through a six step process of Listening to the voice, Gaining voice, Giving voice, Finding alternative voice, Retelling voice and Creating future voice. I made use of the narrative approach in order to listen to my companions so that a unity would exist between their past, present and future stories. As I listened to the stories of my companions from a narrative perspective new possibilities were opened which lead to alternative and future stories. Furthermore, my companions were given the opportunity to find themselves and make new identities on the real journey of life. Through the process of my research I also developed a multicultural identity model specifically for married migrant women in South Korea, but ultimately the purpose of my research was not to show or develop a multicultural identity model regarding migrant women, but was more to help these migrant women find their identities themselves and in this become self-empowered to become contributors to Korean society.

Williams, Issac L. "A pastoral leadership model of mutuality for greater true vine Baptist church." DigitalCommons@Robert W. Woodruff Library, Atlanta University Center, 2016. http://digitalcommons.auctr.edu/dissertations/3275.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this project is to promote transformative change within a local church by establishing an ethos of mutuality built upon mutually shared religious beliefs rather than shared culture or age. The pastor of a predominantly African-American church of approximately two hundred members located in the City of Pensacola in the panhandle of Florida observed that there was no perceived cooperative and collaborative exchange between those who shared a culture (individuals bound together with certain beliefs, interests, and culture) or those who were from the same generation within the church. The church being studied is an urban inner-city ministry comprised of 71 % adults and 29% youths. Culturally, the differences among members are more geographical in their origin than racial. Pensacola, a city with a fluid population, attracts people from different communities within the nation. Utilizing the concepts of task competence, transactional commitment, and transformative consciousness (consistent mental awareness of transformative praxis) for the pastor and the membership, this project addresses transformative change (ministry involvement, organizational commitment, and membership retention) as well as attitudes, behaviors, and actions within the local church. The project includes the development of a four-lesson series that addresses the idea of mutuality (embracing shared core beliefs and ideas). The project enrolled twenty-one people representing each ministry subgroup within the church. The group completed a pre-test and post-test (questionnaire) and participated in all group session activities designed to develop mutuality in the areas of core shared beliefs such as spiritual growth, and the church's direction of ministry, vision, and mission. The effectiveness of the lesson plan series was evaluated based on increased unity, behavioral attitudes towards each other, and praxis in the ministry. The community known as the Greater True Vine Missionary Baptist Church of Pensacola, Florida is the project's primary focus. The hoped for outcome of the project was to create greater unity and organizational commitment among the church's members as a result of their renewed focus on their shared core religious beliefs.

Abstract:
South Africa has a high incidence of crime where violence is particularly being committed against adolescents. Trauma has a disruptive influence on the development of adolescents. There is a lack of research focussing on pastoral counselling from a postmodern perspective regarding adolescents who experience acute trauma. This study makes use of three theories to make a meaningful contribution namely those of Rudolf Otto (1869 – 1937), René Girard (1923 - ) and Donald Capps (1990, 1993, 1994,1996). This study finds Otto`s theory about the numinous useful to assist traumatized adolescents on the road to healing. A numinous experience causes two results namely an overwhelming feeling of awe and a feeling of fear that comes from respect and distance. Traumatized adolescents should be guided into a meeting with God in a confusing post-modern world. Through the appropriation of the numinous adolescents can reach infinitely more than only being a “seeker”. Girard`s (1978) theory on mimetic violence and the scapegoat mechanism has been used in this study since it throws some light on the manner in which traumatized adolescents process trauma. The scapegoat mechanism theory helps one to understand how violence can be processed by scapegoating someone or something else. Girard`s theory also enlightens on the theme of forgiveness. Forgiveness is the key to overcome the horrors of the past. Adolescents particularly need role models. These role models can be found amongst other things, on television. Role models teach adolescents about revenge and reprisal. This study demonstrates that by applying Girard`s theory to the cross of Jesus, the traumatized and crucified Jesus becomes the role model for the “seekers” rather than identification with the peer group. Girard creates a greater understanding to manage trauma by exposing the scapegoat mechanism. Capps’ theory about hope and reframing on the other hand is useful in the sense that it gives hope for the future to adolescents. Hope therapy entails reframing since the situation needs a new perspective. The work of Capps, Reframing: New method in pastoral care (1990) was used as a framework. Narrative therapy is used because it assists the traumatized in their search for meaning. Ganzevoort’s (2000) theory regarding personal narrative identity proved to be useful in pastoral care to traumatized adolescents. The same applies to Erikson’s (1963) development theory, which includes the concept that the virtue of hope develops during childhood. It can also be associated with Moltmann’s (1974) view of hope as an alternative future for suffering persons.

Ojore, Aloys Otieno. "A new model of pastoral care : resources from Luo widows in Kisumu Archdiocese." Thesis, Anglia Ruskin University, 2017. http://arro.anglia.ac.uk/702165/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis discusses the levirate custom also known as widow inheritance among the Luo of Western Kenya. Persistent observance of the practice by the Luo and its condemnation by the Catholic Church has led to a pastoral dilemma for the Catholic widows in the Archdiocese of Kisumu. Those who reject it are ostracized by the community while those who embrace it are excluded by the Church. This dilemma has remained unresolved for over 115 years since the arrival of Catholicism among the Luo. I have addressed the dilemma in this study. I used a multi-mixed research methods (quantitative and qualitative) to examine the perceptions of the Luo widows regarding the custom. However, the research relied heavily on qualitative methods through the use of focus group discussions, mixed discussion group, narrative techniques and Delphi. The study made use of the pastoral cycle paradigm to facilitate dialogue among the stakeholders in the levirate debate. The findings from the survey showed that a majority of the participants wanted the levirate custom abolished, and widows involved in Church ministries. However, a significant minority wanted it retained and asked the Catholic Church to recognise certain levirate unions. The responses from the focus groups, mixed discussion group and Delphi method, was that the levirate custom as currently practiced, is retrogressive and grossly violates the rights of widows and needs to be stopped. They called upon the government to intervene and protect widows against the abuses. However, the Catholic widows in levirate unions want the Catholic Church to re-think her stand on marriage in the face of diverse human cultures in a rapidly changing world. The desire by widows to be included in Church ministries, pointed to the need for a new model of pastoral care. I have developed a model of widowhood ministry in which Luo widows see Jesus Christ as their ideal husband. The model emerged from the narratives and resources of widows, and from the traditional models of widow care in the Judeo-Christian traditions.

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: John Randall Sachs
This essay describes, interprets, and proposes theological conversation and performance that can actualize the experience of our encounter with the Triune God and what we were able to learn thus far from this event in which the Trinity teaches us. The phenomenology of performing spiritual exercises in clinical pastoral care leads to a systematic theology for pastoral ministry. It integrates psychological and theological conscientization, transforming the participants through the self-emptying self-giving dynamism of radical love, even for the ‘enemy’. The love for God and neighbor provides a communal ecclesial space of encounter and conversation for all to share with the Spirit. Eucharist and Reconciliation offer the liturgical ritual confirmation of commitment to self-emptying self-giving, in imitation of Christ. As receivers of wellbeing from the Father who gives, we flourish, children in the reign of God. The ideas were developed in conversation with the letter to the Phillipians, the gospel of Luke, and first letter of John, the spirituality of Ignatius of Loyola, and of Augustine of Hippo, with the theology of Jacques Haers, Bernard Lonergan, Karl Rahner and Paul Tillich, the psychology of Carl Jung, and the postmodern philosophy of Jaques Derrida, Michel Foucault, Emmanuael Levinas, Jean Luc Marion, and Paul Ricoeur

Statistikos duomenimis, 15-20 proc. Lietuvos šeimų negali susilaukti vaikų. Vis daugiau žmonių nevaisingumą laiko liga ir siekia jį „išgydyti“ šiuolaikinėmis technologijomis, kurių dažna prieštarauja Bažnyčios mokymui. Krikščioniškosios antropologijos požiūriu, naujos gyvybės sukūrimas yra prokreacijos aktas, kai lytiniu aktu, kylančiu iš meilės santuokoje, pradedamas ir pagimdomas kitas asmuo, orumu ir verte prilygstantis savo tėvams. Negali būti meilės be vaikų (dirbtinai užkertant kelią naujos gyvybės atsiradimui) ir vaikų be meilės (kai santuokinį lytinį aktą atstoja technologijos). Statistics show that 15-20 % of Lithuanian families are unable to bear children. More and more people think about infertility as a condition and seek to “cure” it with the help from modern medical technologies, which are often in conflict with the Church's teaching. From Christian anthropologic point of view, the creation of new life is the act of procreation: when during sexual act caused by love in marriage another person who equals in dignity and merit to his or her parents is conceived and given birth. There can’t be love without children (artificially preventing the emergence of new life), and children without love (technological intervention which replaces the conjugal sexual act). Human life is sacred by nature. Therefore, the Church’s teaching in order to help infertile families especially strives to protect the human being as a unique individual with dignity and merit. Infertility is biological inability of a person to contribute to conception and also state of a woman who is unable to carry a pregnancy to full term. It causes a lot of emotional and psychological problems. Psychosomatic reasons of infertility are often influenced by environmental factors and lifestyle. To understand infertility causes is important for the prevention of infertility. NPT (Natural Procreative Technology), ethical infertility treatment based on Creighton Model FertilityCareTM System, does not contradict with the teachings of the Catholic Church.
