Full textWe have split in two parts our study : the social treatment of sexual abuses through prevention and the judicial treatment through repression with complementary measures. Indeed, on one hand, the social treatment finality is the regression of such a curse. The fulfilment of this goal is not only to provoke a social reaction by making sensitive the population and by informing the concerned professionals but by clarifying the administrative authorities role. On another hand, the judicial treatment constitutes a call to law, a necessary precondition to curative measures. The judicial action allows to that end to secure the child protection through an educational aid measure or through a decision related to the parental authority. One must not forget to include the repression of the abuse's author. This is an indispensable but insufficiant measure if not associated to a real treatment

Full textTo date, the studies have demonstrated some link between victimization and sexual behaviour problems(SBP) among youth. However, empirical findings about youth engaging in sexually abusive behaviours have focused primilary on the role and importance of sexual abuse experiences and SBPs in response to this form of victimization. As a result, a limited number of studies have considered the possibility that these youth have been exposed to polyvictimization. To overcome this important limitation, this study was articulated under three sub-objectives. Thus, this study aims (1) to better contextualize the experience of sexual abuse of youths with SBPs (2) to better understand the developmental trajectories of victimization of these youths, as well as (3) to better understand the influence of sexual abuse and polyvictimization on the continuity of SBPs. The current study is based on the retrospective and longitudinal analysis of data collected since 2002 at the Centre intégré universitaire de santé et de services sociaux (CIUSSS) de la Capitale- Nationale (Lussier, Chouinard-Thivièrge, McCuish, Nadeau & Lacerte, 2018). In order to meet the objectives of this study, all reports to Child protective service in Quebec between the ages of 0 and 17 were examined among a sample (n = 1034) of children who presented SBPs before the age of 18. The results of the comparative analysis revealed the prevalence as well as the influence of sexual victimization and polyvictimization experienced during childhood and adolescence among children with SBPs. The implications of this study in terms of research, theory and practice, are also discussed. The study highlights the complexity of the traumatic life context in which SBPs manifested by these youth take place.

Full textThis article studies psychological consequences observed among female adult sexual assault victims. The purpose of this study is to identify emotion regulation’s role toward explaining post-traumatic stress symptoms, depending on the time since the last aggression and on whether the victim met a professional for help or not. In order to do this, 237 women who experienced an adult sexual assault were recruited and answered questions about their assault, their emotion regulation strategies and their post-traumatic stress symptoms. Path analyses showed emotion regulation as a variable of interest in a mediation-moderation model explaining the decrease of the post-traumatic stress symptoms with time. As for professional help, this variable was considered as a moderator of the relation between emotion regulation and post-traumatic stress symptoms. Results allow the understanding of the factors associated with the variability of psychological consequences observed among female adult sexual assault victims.

Full textFrom spontaneous revelation, to revealing of the body, from immediate to belated revelations, the child's path to revelation of sexual violence, is a path of suffering. Thousands of children go to school everyday and among them are abused children, victims of more or less aggravated sexual violence. There are children who have been abused within the family environment or even within their own school. As school is a space of interactions between adults and children, it is often a privileged sphere words may be spoken, where the child, victim of abuse, may try to reveal his suffering. Revelations of sexual violence in school enter a space which is neither a place of criminal investigation nor a medico-legal institution , nor a therapeutic setting. Such revelations entail a contamination of suffering upon the adult to whom the child has confided, upon the educational institution, in which the complexity of psychical instinctive and fantasy lif of concerned individuals comes into play. The revelation brings to light unconscious positions of the persons it confronts, as well as their instinctive choices, their unresolved œdipal conflicts, and triggers subjective positions which the person may not even be aware. Such revelations bring to light the fragility as well as the weak points in the school institution itself. Our research examines the consequences of such revelations on an interpsychical as well as intersubjective level. We base our analysis on the notion of the traumatic tryptich, that is to say, the consequences for the child victim, for the adult confidante, and for the school institution. Our aim is to understand what can help the revelation process to become a positive event which can give the child the opportunity of living with the trauma of abuse and not merely surviving

Full textVictims of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) are at risk of developing multiple symptoms in various spheres of functioning that may continue into adulthood and adversely affect the development and stability of couple relationships (Briere & Runtz, 1993). The nature and extent of this diversity is associated with the quality of support received by the child (Charuvastra & Cloitre, 2008, Godbout & al., 2014). In this context, the purpose of this study is to examine the extent of social support received by adult survivors of CSA and how it is associated with various indicators of couple relationships quality (attachment as well as psychological, sexual and conjugal distress). A sample of 1309 participants currently in a couple relationship was recruited from within the community to answer online questionnaires about CSA, support received following the unveiling of this event, attachment, psychological distress, marital and sexual distress. Of the sample, 19.1% (n = 250) reported having experienced CSA. Of these CSA victims, 15.6% (n = 39) reported receiving support following the unveiling, 17.6% (n = 44) received negative support, while 66.8% (n = 167) never disclosed CSA. Path analyses indicated that, consistent with our assumptions, negative support is associated with greater attachment difficulties (abandonment anxiety and avoidance of intimacy) that are associated with greater psychological, couple and sexual distress. These results show the protective role of perceived support in the development of psycho-sexo-relational consequences following the CSA. These results will contribute to the development of best practices in managing the unveiling of CSA in preventive and therapeutic interventions with couples where one of the partners has experienced this type of abusive experience.

Full textThis thesis is based on nine years of practising psychoanalytical psychotherapy in two public institutions with adults or teenagers having lived incestual acts at the end of the period dassically called in psychoanalysis : latency, between 6 years old and puberty. The thesis begins with a presentation of the setting of this practise» the psychotraumatic syndrom and the related clinic The first chapter is presentating the incest problematic lived at this latency period. Specificities of incest at this period are progressively presented. With illustrations of the practise, of the therapy The second chapter puts forward the problematic of a psychotraumatic process rather than the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It ends with a review of the question of victims and victimology. A critical point of view is set on the way the cognitivo comportementalist theories, and some psychoanalytical ones have dealt with the matter. After the clinical part and the nosographical part, the third chapter deals with the question of the importance of the "tenderness" in the constitution of the "maternel". A review is made on the Works about the latency period and the first steps of the child's project, as well as the impact of the traumatic effraction of the incestual act on these steps. This chapter presents the metapsychological importance of the tenderness in an individual abilty of an inconscious work of presentation. Adult or child. Specifically at thé latency period. The last chapter presents a theory of the psychotraumatic process in progress after the traumatic effraction and the "intromission" of the traumatic scene, underlining again its difference with a traumatic state

Full textDespite all the reforms it has undergone, Quebec’s criminal justice continues to be the subject of much criticismfrom victims of sexual assault in terms of access to justice. Attrition, influence of myths and stereotypes andsecondary victimization are significant obstacles faced by victims seeking to access courts and obtain justice. Acomparative law analysis with South Africa and New Zealand, subject of similar critiques, shows that theseissues of access to justice are common in adversarial-type criminal law systems. Because of the similarities inthe substantive, procedural and evidentiary rules of these three systems, the search for justice solutions forQuebecers victims within these foreign systems is relevant. In South Africa and New Zealand, specialized sexualviolence courts have been set up to address the "justice deficit" of victims. An analysis of the essentialcomponents of each of the models and of the results of the evaluations to which they were subjected leads tothe conclusion that they have had a positive impact in their respective jurisdiction: increase in conviction rates, improvement in the quality of testimony, reduction of delays, secondary victimization and the impact of mythsand stereotypes, improvement of judges' knowledge of the reality of victims, etc. They therefore represent apromising initiative to improve access to justice for Quebecers victims of sexual assault. These evaluationshighlight the pitfalls of specialized sexual violence courts that may compromise this potential and that must beconsidered before the implementation of such courts.

Full textThe study of the sexual aggressions leads to the development of a concept of physical sexual aggressions currently failing and to insist on the specificity of the matter within sight of an undecided legal answer. Imperfections affect these infringements : the rape is eloquent, the sexual aggressions others than the rape leave pantois. Thus, to requalify in contacts is essential. The distinctive criterion of the two infringements, the intimacy of the bringing together, levels : the rape requires a penetration, the contacts, a contact, distinction weakened in practice. The study of the common criteria reveals the difficulties of seizing the concept of sex and of proving the absence of assent of the victim. Being the legal status, the two infringements form a homogeneous block, from where the development of an original criminal policy which reconcilies two requirements, safety and humanity. In the name of safety, the legislator founds energetic measurements, of which a very long imprisonment. In the name of a humanity, it rediscovers that of the victim by adapting the procedure to its fears ; it tries to give a direction to the detention of the sexual delinquent

Full textThis thesis, proceeding from an examination of the results of projective tests aimed at identifying perverse psychic functioning, focuses on paedophiles, more particularly on rapists of young girls, questioning not only the concept of perversion, but equally the idea of rape. Contrary to other approaches, psychoanalysis minimizes and even looks to reject rape from the sexual register, in favour of violence and death instinct. At the conclusion of the theoretic investigations and after listening to the rapists' discourses, three principal hypotheses are set out : any act of rape is a sexual act ; rape is a response to the need to discharge an urge linked to a sexual fantasy ; in paedophiles it's an incestuous fantasy ; faced with arousal of a sexual nature, psychological drives are insufficiently containing. The methodology comprises the taking of projective tests (Rorschach and TAT), an intelligence test (WAIS-R) and semi-structured interviews. To prove the hypotheses, an analytical framework, specific to the prison population under consideration, has been established. In addition, the data is analysed qualitatively and statistically within the framework of psychoanalytic theory. . .

Full textSexual abuse is a tremendous threat to both physical and psychological integrity of human beings. This prevalent trauma induces several biopsychosocial consequences that affect the various life domains of the victim. Sexual assault victims (SAV) are seven times more at risk of developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) than someone without a history of sexual abuse. Daytime posttraumatic symptoms arise, and SAV find themselves in a state of hypervigilance, accompanied by intrusive thoughts, potential dissociative states and avoidance behaviors. Although less studied than those experienced during the day, nighttime posttraumatic symptoms (e.g. recurring nightmares, insomnia) would maintain the SAV in PTSD and persist beyond the usual treatments targeting PTSD. Recurring nightmares are even linked to a higher risk of suicidality. Given that sexual trauma often occurs in the evening or at bedtime, SAV are more likely to suffer (77%) from nighttime symptoms than other posttraumatic populations. Several treatments addressing directly nighttime posttraumatic symptoms have emerged over the past three decades. The aim of the present project is to systematically review the effectiveness of these treatments targeting nighttime symptoms (nightmares and sleep disturbances) in SAV suffering from PTSD. This review includes an exhaustive and diversified selection of studies as well as an assessment of the methodological quality of the 22 primary studies that comprise it. Coding and data extraction were performed by three independent judges (kappa = 0.93). Once primary data were gathered, summary tables were rendered, analyzed and interpreted to highlight relevant information on clinical samples, methodological designs and interventions, for both research and clinical practice. Despite the heterogeneity within and between the primary studies, imagery rehearsal therapy (psychological intervention) and prazosin (pharmacological intervention) appear to be the most recurrent and proven effective interventions to treat nighttime PTSD symptoms (such as a significant reduction of nightmares and insomnia symptoms) and to noticeably increase the sleep quality and overall quality of life in SAV. This systematic review highlights the need for further study of the subject, and more importantly the use of complex methodological designs (e.g. larger and more representative clinical samples of SAV, more RCTs, more valid and objective sleep measures). Future research should include quantitative data analysis (as is the case with meta-analysis) for a better understanding of the effectiveness of these treatments and interventions.

Full textOur research specifically bore on the incest carried out over the child and in a broader way, on the child sexual abuse. We report about the child's discourse analysis which highlights the translation he makes for himself about incest, how he names this experience and how he integrates or erases it of its own history. "The clinic of incest" enabled us to foresee the deep relationship which settles between the culpability and jouissance felt by the children victims of incest. We exposed a metapsychology of this trauma's inscription, to explain what became the traces of the jouissance of the incest. We conceived this inscription of the traumatism of the incest, which frightens and breaks inside, as a "hole" which works into what we call the metonymy of the holes. Incest's prohibition is the condition to be able to think, in the sense that it gives access to word and desire. Thus, the incest is a way to put on test the symbolic system

Full textMinors who are victims of sexual crimes should be entitled to a special protection by the criminal law. The importance of such protection should not be minimised. Criminal law should include provisions which are able to address adequately sexual crimes in which the victim is a minor. The purpose of this research is to examine to any extent minority affects the provisions of the Criminal Code, aiming at providing the required protection of the minor victim in the criminal legal system. Can the substantive and procedural criminal rules regarding sexual offences which are not applying particularly to the victim as a minor provide him/her with the sufficient protection? In other words, should the rules dealing with sexual offences in which the victim is an adult be the same and apply to a case when the victim is a minor? If the answer to the previous questions is no, the minor as a victim of sexual offences would need new rules in order to address his case? How could we set these rules? One of the topics is to analyze all the preceding questions concerning the adaptation of the criminal law to deal more adequately with the cases when the victim of sexual offences is a minor. A comparative analysis between the required protection of the minor as a victim of sexual offences and that protection provided generally by the criminal law raises two main questions: firstly, how to adapt substantive criminal rules in order to provide a better protection for the minor victim of sexual offences. Furthermore, minority should be an element of the sexual offences rather than an aggravating circumstance. Secondly, to adapt the criminal law to suit the status of the minor victim can be by the individualization of procedural techniques. Criminal proceedings should be reorganised to take into consideration the minor victim as a subject of real protection. The French law which has a long history in protecting the minor victim should now adopt a new model providing a comprehensive care of the minor victim of sexual offences

Full textFor several years, research has focused on adult depression as a long-term consequence of sexual abuse experienced in childhood. On the other hand, in recent years there has been a considerable boom in the scientific literature to study the depression that a child may experience as a result of sexual abuse. The abuse group (n=40) includes 24 girls and 16 boys. The control group, consisting of children who have not been sexually assaulted (n=59), includes 32 girls and 27 boys. Participants were all 7 to 13 years old, 98% Caucasian and were assessed with the Depression Inventory Questionnaire for Children (Child Depression Inventory, Kovacs, 1985) which is based on the questionnaire. Depression Inventory for Beck's Adults (Beck Depression Inventory, Beck, Ward, Mendelson, Mock, & Erbaugh, 1961). A t-test showed that children who have been sexually abused have a significantly higher level of depression (p < .001) than children in the control group (no abuse).

Sexual Exploitation is a complex international phenomenon with significant physical, psychological and social consequences for victims and survivors. It affects not only adults, but also minors, and females are particularly vulnerable. To date, descriptive and explanatory studies have addressed the phenomenon of sexual exploitation from the macro-sociological and feminist perspective. Thus, current knowledge about victimization script of sexual exploitation is limited and, therefore, early screening and detection for prevention are also limited. To overcome this limitation, the present research proposes to present the victimization script of sexual exploitation for this population. The current study is also concerned about the victim’s perceptions and cognitive trajectories that may play a role in shaping the script. The sample consists of 19 girls who received services from the Quebec’s Child Welfare system regarding a referral related to a situation of sexual exploitation. The analytic strategy includes a grounded theory approach of victim’s perceptions throughout their experience. The results allowed to describe victims identification, the recruitment and control strategies used by exploiters as well as the nature of the exploitation. The link between the victims’ cognitive patterns through the script steps and their evolution across sexual exploitation experiences is also presented. These findings highlight suitable situational prevention strategies and promising avenues of intervention according to the cognitive trajectory of the victims. This research contributes to the advancement of knowledge about victims of sexual exploitation, the context of this form of victimization, the theoretical approach to criminal scripts, and the interpersonal and cognitive behavioral script of sexual exploitation.

Full textThe concept of trauma developed y psychoanalysis specially enlighten the comprehension of the sequels of child sexual abuse. Emotions and cognition as rememoration are modified by the aggression. These distortions could be understood as mechanisms of defence. The consequences in the examination of the child or the adolescent in forensic practice are detailed. Two multicentric studies with comparison groups, one using the CECA (Childhood Experience of Care and Abuse) demonstrated the importance of victimisation and precise the occurence of more classic troubles as post-traumatic stress disorder among this population. We also discuss birth as a traumatic event and the occurence of severe troubles as bipolar disorders in this occasion
