Full textThis research is about the Raika, sheeps and camels herders in the arid zone in India (Rajasthan). This work aims to show how the organization of pastoral production influences the social organization of the pastoral societies, how it contributes to the pastoral culture continuity, but also how it causes an increasing economic and social marginalisation. In a first part, I introduce the caste of Raika in the Indian society. The following part is devoted to the sedentary practice of the pastoral production before approaching in third part the nomadic practice in the social and economic organization. The last part is concentrated to the changes which appear in the caste because of urbanization of a part of the caste, through the institution of the marriage and the social relations between pastors and urban Raika

Full textYet a country with enormous potentialities for the development of pastoralism, the Central African Republic has been confronted for more than a decade by a prolonged crisis situation accentuated by a serious security and humanitarian crisis in 2013. This crisis has greatly affected the agricultural sector. pastoral farming remains one of the most important components. Today, as in the past, pastoralists are organizing themselves to cope with these shocks and mobility has for a very long time been the main strategy of response. However, because of the scale of the recent crises and their consequences, this crucial question always comes back to us: is pastoral mobility the key to adapting and maintaining pastoralism in CAR?This thesis, which is based on two case studies focusing on qualitative data, proposes to answer this central question by studying pastoral livestock farming systems, particularly the adaptation strategies of pastoralist households in a context of pastoral mobility and countries in post-conflict situations. The research was carried out in two pastoral camps located in the sub-prefecture of Birao (Terfel) and that of Bambari (Bangui-Banda). It shows that mobility is far from being over and that it is coming back with force as the main strategy in the situation of great security crisis such as that experienced by the CAR in 2013. It also results from this thesis that a better Understanding pastoral systems involves mobilizing local issues

Full textFor the twenty last years, associations appeared beside the parish churches of "eglise reformee de france", more or less independant of them, which were called protestant meeting centers. Their purposes are multiple: welcome, meeting, social action, cultural action, research. . . But all of them intend to involve a public larger than those of the protestant parish. After a first theological and historical approach, this study tries to give a detailed description of this phenomena, not yet really studied in terms of sociology. It includes an analysis of the scopes of the centers, their activity programs, their structural links to the church, the qualifications and curriculum vitae of their permanents, the function of not-salaried people, etc. . . It details the evolution of these structures, settling parallels to mutations of secular society, with the initial direction to political dimension (the christian eschatology being widely reinterpreted in political terms), the inflexion to social action, setting relation to the priority given to "attestation" versus "contestation". The author propounds to read the creation and development of these centers clueing religious and politic as a reaction of the church establishment to the secularization that intends to relegate religious to the sphere of private life, and she tries to locate this phenomena in regard with the new mutations of the religion in franc

Full textCatholicism has long employed theological ethics to evaluate the justice of the organization of human societies. The political culture of the United States has traditionally nourished public debate concerning the social contract with challenges drawn from its 'civil religion'. Long excluded from the American politico-religious debate, the catholic community in the United States developed a number of attitudes around faith and citizenship in the isolation of the ghettos. Since the relatively recent election of john f. Kennedy and the opening of the second Vatican council, American Catholics have been gaining an ever more important voice in national debates over moral and ethical issues in the area of social justice. The catholic church of the United States has become a public church in which the laity and the clergy have discovered a new ecclesial identity and a new public responsibility. During the economic crisis of the 1980's, the catholic community drafted a pastoral letter entitled economic justice for all through the means of a public debate. The methodology of composition was revolutionary because it enabled the active participation of the laity in a politico-religious prudential judgment of the relative morality of the national economy. At the crossroads of American civil religion and catholic social doctrine, the process of writing 'in public' reveals a new role for the catholic community in the United States, that of moral conscience for the nation. Our study traces the surprising history of this still minority community to such a public responsibility; it sketches several heuristic models to explain the mentalities and the behavior of the debaters. It highlights the possibilities and the challenges, both civic and ecclesial, thus posed. Lastly, it identifies what is at stake for the future of this catholic and American way of being church

Full text« There is nowhere such a large number of agronomists who devote their talents and their days to discover and spread useful truths, nor such a large number of excellent works on agriculture, and there is nowhere such a large number of ignorant farmers, incapable of understanding what it would be important for them to appreciate ». Such is the panorama of French agriculture drawn up in 1821 by Désiré Ordinaire, member of the Agricultural Society of the Doubs. This picture of agricultural France with little ability to innovate – except for the great landowner agronomists – has long been fixed in the minds of researchers, who have often considered that agriculture started to develop with the high productivity of the 1960s. We believe that « agricultural development »is, however, an older process, rooted in individual or collective initiatives which were sometimes very early. After clarifying the concept of « agricultural development », we therefore seek to prove that French agriculture had already been dynamic during the nineteenth century. The example of the Doubs department enables us to study how it moved on to pastoral specialization. The analysis of the actors of the agricultural development during the 19th and 20th centuries, backed by prosopographical and micro-historical methods, allows us to throw light on the changes in agriculture, on their chronology. Finally, the monitoring of over 800 people – members of the Agricultural Society, of the country fair and consultative chambers, of the trade unions and mutual insurance companies, or else prizewinners – enables us to specify and date the periods when the agrarian elite, the actors in this development, emerged. This elite did not necessarily choose pastoral specialization, thus showing a complex relationship between agriculturalisation and pastoralization
