Full textFor centuries, the algerian steppe has been exploited by nomadic tribes living by pastoral transhumant herding of small ruminants. Divided and destabilized by inappropriate government policies and projects during and after the french colonization, these tribal-regulated pastureland have given way to a competitive family-operation mode of pasture. To meet a growing demand for ovine meat, following a high population growth, breeders increased their herds, extended the mechanized grain farming and increased purchases of feed grains. The overloaded ranges that supplied the bulk of animal feed have been degraded, transhumance reduced and small breeders impoverished. Today, the prohibition of cereals culture on fragile lands and the closure of degraded grazing pastures are a necessity. However, they will not be enough either to protect or to restore the fertility of the steppe, nor sufficient to improve the livelihoods of agro-pastoralists; and will remain so as long as the untapped cropland and pastureland resources in the region have not been permanently deployed to increase and regulate forage availability. Sustainable development of agro-pastoral livestock in the steppe would be greatly facilitated by implementing participatory and coordinated programs and projects, integrated to strategies for sustainable development of the region and country

Full textThis work tries to release, through the results of detailed investigation, the principal characteristics of the society, space and activity dynamics of the Algerian pastors and agro-pastors. It is a work devoted to the study of three dynamics closely related to the point where it is difficult to dissociate them. In a context of modernization and significant role that the global compared to the local level, the pastoral society is divided between the conservation of the usual rules and adoption of the modern ones, offering a way of decent and comfortable life. Space dynamics is characterized by a degradation of the pastoral resources like result of a significant difference between needs and availabilities. Concerning the dynamics of the activity, the involved systems, make state pastoralism neither traditional nor modern. In other words, nor extensive and even less intensive. The current context does not give a precise idea on future evolution as og the these system. Nevertheless, what is certain is the fact that the pastoralism such as defined by the various specialists is disappearing

Full textThe Algerian steppes are located between the Sahara and the Mediterranean. The semi-arid climate allows the development of natural vegetation and the maintenance of pasture. This fragile environment is the scene of change, with the decline of nomadism, the transformation of pastoralists into agro-pastoralists, the extension of agriculture and urbanization. We approach these points by articulating the past to the present to highlight the weight of the livestock activity strongly rooted in the polarization of current trends.Based on a quantitative remote sensing and analysis method for large number of satellite images, this work captures changes in environmental processes and seeks useful links between them. The precipitation analysis by a specialized indicator (SPI) reveals its fluctuating nature. Dry sequences leave damaging consequences on vegetation, human activity and sand drift reactivation.Spectacular changes are observed, agriculture has emerged from preferential places to conquer new spaces in the plains and terraces. The sand occasionally reappears, its correlation with the drought could be demonstrated. The sand drift begins after the persistence of three dry years. On the other hand, a wet year is enough to substantially reduce the sand area. This is why the interaction between water and wind activity is analyzed. We propose a model of sedimentary exchange, introducing the concept of sedimentary recycling, added transport and opposite transport. In terms of management, anticipatory protective measures are favored for the later management of the impacts of degradation. Furthermore, the prospective management is approached through the exploitation of meteorological forecast data and the identification of spectral variations indicative of reactivation of the sand drift in satellite imagery
