Inspired by the adhesion mechanisms of several animal species such as geckos, beetles and flies, several efforts in designing and fabricating surface engineering strategies have been made recently to mimic the adhesive and frictional behaviour of biological foot pads. An important feature of such biological adhesion systems is the ability to switch between strong attachment and easy detachment, which is crucial for animal locomotion. Recent investigations have suggested that such a ‘switching’ mechanism can be achieved by the elastic anisotropy of the attachment pad, which renders the magnitud

AbstractThis article is about the application of air film-based modular prefabrication system design strategy in emergency buildings. To determine the typical and essential behavior of membrane structures, this paper reviews and compares relevant theories, experiments, and simulations on architectural performance, mechanical properties of membrane materials, and membrane structure performance. In addition, this project tries to use the robotic arm spraying technology to study the strategy of trajectory generation. First, import the model shape into the software for multiple trajectory simulations, verify and optimize the injection path program through the software, observe the actual injection trajectory, and finally select the final Program. The resulting vectors are also relatively balanced, avoiding the over-concentration of the top curve. The advantage of this method is that it can reduce the material on the top and make the material distribution more uniform, which is a more economical and reasonable way to obtain the trajectory.

AbstractVidéo de Femmes dans le Parc (VFP) (Women’s Videos in the Park) is a summertime open-air screening of independent short videos, held annually since 1991 at Park La Fontaine in Montreal, Canada, by Groupe Intervention Vidéo (GIV), an independent feminist/queer distribution company. In this essay, we explore VFP’s historical use of public space and its reimagination under Covid’s urgent sanitary crisis and chronic social inequities. Within the media ecology of Montreal’s outdoor cinemas, we see GIV’s creative decision to move VFP online during Covid as part of a longer history of alternative media’s unconventional exhibition modes that address social inequalities. As such, we first situate VFP within GIV’s wider mandate of dissemination of video work by women. We then analyze VFP’s “visual architecture” under Covid, stressing the organizers’ original strategies to reproduce a sense of eventness even through online exhibition. We conclude with questions of embodied and affective labor, including audiences’ wellbeing, artist renumeration, and self-care, that the shift online entails for the organizers of VFP.

This chapter addresses new approaches for design and production practices by applying film as a medium and production design techniques as a method in (interior) architectural education. In various courses and formats with international students on Bachelor and Master level, the author is exploring cinematic tools for phenomenological analysis, scenographic reinterpretation, and architectural storytelling in order to expand the range and toolbox of contemporary academic teaching in the architectural context. The common ground of architectural and cinematic space goes back much further than the history of film itself. But despite comprehensive literature on both the topic of sequence in architecture and fundamental film theoretical writings on cinematic space, we are still the men who stare at static representations. Off the beaten path of tried and tested design methods and beyond Gottfried Semper's “haze of carnival candles,” cinematic methods are providing valuable tools for the creation, evaluation and representation of spatial designs in (interior) architecture.

Abstract:
This chapter analyzes the confluence in thinking about cinematic and architectural montage in the work of the Russian filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein and the Swiss architect Le Corbusier. It describes their encounter in Moscow in 1928 and their shared admiration for the French architectural historian Auguste Choisy, whose description of spatial passage through the Athenian Acropolis is a key point of reference in the accounts the filmmaker and the architect develop of the role of narrative, movement, and editing in the apprehension of space. Although Le Corbusier’s promenade architecturale is the manipulation of a body moving through actual space according to precise calculations of a visual sequence, the cinematic version, as staged by Corbusier and Chenal, faced the viewer with a surrogate or avatar body moving through space, but never presented the viewer with the scenes viewed by this body: an invisible, one might say ineffable merging of architecture with the image of an invisible architecture as a projection of a static viewer. Architecture in this sense achieves the status desired of the modernist machine universe, but in the process has been reduced to two dimensions, without perspective. Eisenstein, for his part, was in this sense able to “build” an architecture in film—not the imperfect static forms that one had to walk through or work hard to imagine their ecstatic movement, but through the moving image itself understood as the highest technological achievement of modernism, thus achieving the (ecstatic) dissolution, in image, of modernist architecture.

This study intends to discover the challenges of implementing BIM in the Malaysian architecture industry to further integrate BIM with Malaysia's green building rating tool, the Green Building Index (GBI). This is to further encourage more green buildings to be built in Malaysia. The outcome of this study recognises the past examinations on BIM implementation that includes definitions, BIM applications, BIM benefits, and BIM future challenges. A qualitative approach using structured interviews was directed to designers to understand the challenges of adapting BIM for green buildings projects in Malaysia. Thus, this study provides insights on BIM application that could positively emerge as a notable tool to enhance green buildings that can accelerate the progress of sustainability within the construction industry in Malaysia. Additionally, this study contributes towards raising awareness among Malaysian architectural firms to invest in BIM as a main tool in designing green buildings.

Abstract:
This article is on the architectural discussion of a four-fold portrayal of Lars von Trier’s film Dogville. The film is about a lonely woman’s refuge in a middle-ofnowhere American town and how the town community turns her into a slave. The film was shot in a dark hangar and has a single stage that is only decorated with chalk lines. The article contains an introduction, a conclusion, and four chapters: “the lone subject”, “the philosopher/architect”, “(lack of) Nature” and “Waiting for Destruction”. The introduction is about the grotesque character of the film with the stage’s unliving dark atmosphere and the plot’s unearthly feelings. The first chapter is about the subjectoriented character of the film. All unhuman materialities are clarified only with the clues of human perception through the film. The second chapter is about how the intellectual idea becomes the slave of public opinion through the character Tom’s transformation. It is used to understand the transformed role of an architect in a capitalist society. The third one is the vacuum of materiality in the film; the only natural elements are metaphors of the action and reaction in human-nature duality. The fourth chapter is about the metaphorical destruction promise of the film that is actually understood as an architectural element in the context of the text that is not normally used to be handled as a part of the architecture. Destruction not only means the possibility of new beginnings but also an ethical clearance for the regrowth of nature physically and metaphorically

Abstract:
This chapter aims to fill in the substance of the first component of the corporate fraction of the transnational capitalist class (TCC) in architecture and urban design, the major architecture firms. While the starchitects and signature architects who produce unique architectural icons have attracted most media attention, they are a very small group within the profession. Here, the focus is on the much larger group of architecture firms producing the successful typical icons that are transforming cities all round the world in the era of capitalist globalization. Infrastructure is an increasingly large part of this, and I introduce the idea of celebrity infrastructure to highlight how bridges, transportation hubs, and waterside developments are mobilized as the Icon Project strives to turn them into consumerist spaces. Here the focus is more on the projects than the firms. As we saw in the previous chapter, contrary to the claims of many architecture critics and theorists, iconicity is not simply a creation of the media or corporate publicists. Architects play a significant part in the social production of iconic architecture, making some of them active participants in the Icon Project. As Dion Kooijman (2000: 829) argues, ‘architecture can form a true part of the “image building” by PR and marketing departments’. Behind the general discussion of the ways in which the four fractions of the TCC serve the interests of capitalist globalization through creating and promoting iconic architecture is the idea that, as well as the symbolism and aesthetics of iconic buildings and spaces, there is something else going on of great significance. Two pioneering studies, Blau (1984) and Gutman (1988), researched architecture as an industry in the United States. Judith Blau focused more on architects themselves, reporting a key finding that 98 per cent of respondents (she surveyed 400 architects in New York) said that architects were distinct from other professionals in terms of the ‘mystique of artistic creativity’ (Blau 1984: 49), but that most architects never realize this goal. This was seen to be a problem for architecture, particularly in capitalist societies.

Abstract:
Architecture is a self-developing process that includes all kinds of social knowledge, which closely follows changes and improvements in social events and technology. As a result of that architecture, action, real and virtual products occur, take forms, and become a part of individuals and society. There are many subelements that support the emergence of these products, in other words, there are many factors contributing to the architectural theory. Cinema, as an effective means of expression among the visual arts, is among the disciplines of architecture. Cinema and architecture are branches of art that are close to each other in terms of designing, producing, and developing technological techniques. This article examines the interaction between cinema and architecture, the analyzed film as a reference is Steven Spielberg's 'Jurassic Park' movie. The Jurassic Park movie was shot and presented to the audience by using all the high technological developments of that period. Many techniques such as special digital effects, virtual reality, and simulation techniques were used. These techniques, which were used also very widely in science-fiction movies, laid the foundation of the METAVERSE which has many users today. The popularity of this virtual world has led to the advancement of the architectural profession in this field. It is possible to see most of the structures designed in the real world but also in the virtual world. Such as cities, places, objects, materials, etc. designed and presented to users in the digital environment. Architecture is also used in the design process of structures in the virtual world, and the spaces are virtualized by using 3D programs. The gigantic creatures in the movie Jurassic Park were designed and animated in line with these principles. Moreover, similar principles were applied in the design process of real buildings and virtual objects in the movie and in the design of spaces in the movie. Within the scope of this study, information about “Virtual Architecture” will be given and the movie “Jurassic Park” will be analyzed through both real architectural and virtual architecture.<br>

This paper addresses the challenge faced by many industrial manufacturers engaged in digital transformation as they rearchitect their physical products into digital assets that can be orchestrated by the firm’s business customers as part of their own digital strategic initiatives. In the context of a century old firm that pioneered the professional coffee machine market, we find that architectural innovation occurs at multiple levels – within and outside the individual machines – driven by three design principles: programmatic bitstring encapsulation, hardware abstraction, and physical extensi

The world cup stadia have been a constant concern for the hosting countries. Many of them have become a burden on the economies of their countries, only to become white elephants after the tournaments end. Therefore, the core mission of the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy in Qatar was to ensure that the World Cup Stadiums are built with a legacy and to remain functional in the long run, not just as facilities, but as cultural icons. Such efforts have promoted the exercise of stadia building in Qatar as a positive and unique experience. As a firm, we, at Arab Engineering Bureau, are

Abstract. The architectural heritage is the expression of the vast cultural heritage, as a set of cultural and landscape assets, of the different national or international territorialities, which indicates in the connective of the heterogeneous urban, rural and mountain landscape areas, an inestimable value of the monumental historical buildings. The various transformative factors of administrative management and socio-economic cultural type, monitored by quality and compatibility indicators, distinguish different realities over time, in which technological innovations prevail.

The topic concerns the revitalization of a place by the introduction of a new building whose functionality and architectural uniqueness renew and/or develop the place. To put the problem in a broader perspective - the introduction of a building with a non-threatening function and an attractive form makes a declining or stagnant place suddenly appealing again. This applies to both, the built and natural environment. The restauration of both often requires similar revitalization activities and supporting elements. The presented issue is a part of a broader study that concerns architecture as the

Abstract The following paper focuses on the dynamic behavior of hermetic squeeze film dampers (HSFD) that utilize fluid-bounding flexible members as a part of the support structure. More specifically, the current paper advances an engineering design modification to the existing HSFD concept, which is aimed at rendering the dynamic force coefficients frequency independent. The paper builds on past HSFD testing and modeling approaches to develop higher fidelity analytical models, which are used to investigate different damper configurations while taking keen interest in the frequency dependency

Bendigo, where the traditional owners are the Dja Dja Wurrung people, has capitalised on its European historical roots. Its striking architecture owes much to its Gold Rush past which has also given it a diverse cultural heritage. The creative industries, while not well recognised as such, contribute well to the local economy. The many festivals, museums and library exhibitions attract visitors from the metropolitan centre of Victoria especially. The Bendigo Creative Industries Hub was a local council initiative while the Ulumbarra Theatre is located within the City’s 1860’s Sandhurst Gaol. Ma
