Abstract:
Approaches that are culturally sensitive and that promote social and economic justice enrich the learning experience. This article presents a class project where students came together around a specific cause and created a patchwork quilt. Students were introduced to the concept of a patchwork quilt as a symbol of tradition, community, and advocacy. Two classes selected a quilt theme and class patchwork quilts were constructed. Students gained valuable experience in appreciating and employing cultural tradition, collaboration, and advocacy.

Abstract How is Germany doing with respect to the fight against COVID-19? Did the German Federal and the country’s Regional Governments enact a coordinated approach, and did the sector have the opportunity to co-operate with government and have a “voice” in the policy process? Based on the results of recent empirical studies and desk-top, internet-based research, these questions are addressed and the outcome is that there were numerous programs issued by the Federal and regional German governments that buffer the effects of the crisis is having on the sector. However, the programs were not developed in co-operation with the sector and were not easy to access, particularly for small and non-professionalized nonprofits.

Abstract:
Patchwork quilts are an important part of American culture and history. The patchwork designs are geometric, and early American women used mathematics and artistry as they sewed warm covers for their families. The history of quilts can be traced through several cultures, including that of Native Americans, western pioneers, slaves escaping through the Underground Railroad, and immigrants from Europe and Asia. Often, students have seen quilts in their homes and are interested in exploring the patterns. Quilt making is related to family heritage, and the study of quilts may connect young students with their grandparents or family histories.

Abstract:
A mathematics curriculum that focuses on problem solving needs relevant, challenging problems for students to solve. The most engaging problems initially emerge from real-world contexts and offer opportunities for extensions that are limited only by the problem-solving abilities of the students. As suggested by the NCfM's Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics (1989), students learn new concepts and skills through problem-solving experiences. Therefore, selecting appropriate contexts that offer opportunities for problem solving and from which students can generate problems is critical. This article discusses how one piece of children's Literature be used to develop appropriate problem solving tasks.

Focusing on patchwork produced by Victorianmilitary men, we seek to extend the understanding of trench art, in terms ofchronology and form.

Abstract:
Art Deco is an artistic term that stands for an elegant eclectic design style dating back to the 1920s. Style has affected virtually all industries, including architecture, fine arts, applied arts, interior design, industrial design, fashion and jewellery, as well as painting, graphics and cinema. Art Deco architecture and arts expanded on other movements - Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, Bauhaus, and Futurism. Principles of Constructivism and Cubism are also used in contemporary textile patchwork and quilt. The aim of the paper: exploration of the features of Art Deco style in the textile works of 20th century designers - Sonia Delaunay and Paul Poiret. The methods of the research: exploration of theoretical literature and Internet resources, the experience of reflection. The research emphasizes Sonja Delaunay’s particular importance of textile works in the development of contemporary quilt in the 21st century.

The shared element of the patchwork quilt is the common thread that binds important social studies concepts and contextual mathematics in this month's integrated learning experiences based on quality children's literature. The featured literary selections naturally focus the reader's attention on the literature's historical and cultural aspects; however, the mathematics subtly embedded in the story lines should be actively investigated. The activities arising from these books encourage young children not only to appreciate diverse cultural heritages but also to develop an awareness for ways in which mathematics has played an important role throughout history.

ABSTRACTAlthough Canadian Medicare gives the population “reasonable” access” to all “medically necessary” physician and hospital services, long-term care is not formally subject to those conditions. In Ontario, long-term care involves a “patchwork quilt” of government, charitable, for-profit, and personally-provided services; an ongoing consultation has been under way in an attempt to rationalize service financing and provision. This paper reviews the series of policy proposals and the accompanying public consultation processes. It concludes that the emphasis on “community involvement” without a clear definition of “community” or the goals of participation has paradoxically increased the “scope of conflict,” increased frustration among stakeholders, and made policy action more difficult.

Open access (OA) in the United States is similar to a crazy quilt. There is a patchwork of OA policy and practice among the many federal, state, and local jurisdictions in the United States, as well as individual policies and practices in individual institutions, whether those are academic, business, or governmental. By way of a reminder, the United States is a federal republic consisting of 50 states, plus Washington, D.C., five major territories, and various possessions. Most readers know that already, but what one should also understand is that each of the states and territories has its own policies with respect to OA, as does the Federal government.

Abstract:
While it is true for most literature, theological and otherwise, that an informed awareness regarding antecedents provides valuable perspective toward its interpretation, this is especially true for the theology of the Carolingian period. The Carolingians often used their source material in verbatim citations which remained unacknowledged. One has the impression of a kind of homemade theology, constructed out of bits and pieces of materials that were chosen partly because they were convenient or familiar. The result at its best had an appeal not unlike the patchwork quilt which has a unity and charism all its own even though it is cut predominantly from pieces which were not themselves the work of those designing the quilt. In order to appreciate the final effect achieved by such literature, it is crucial then to be able to identify not only the authors upon whom the writer is relying, but the precise patches of material which have been cut from each, so that we may observe the final effect as the result of a complex of decisions to select, combine, juxtapose, add to, adjust, comment upon, and otherwise utilize a large body of literary fragments.

Abstract:
Empire, imperialism and colonialism are all terms that defy easy definition. The variety of imperial regimes and colonial situations demonstrates a “patchwork quilt of ad hoc adaptations to particular circumstance” (Osterhammel, 1997, p. 4). However, this paper does not seek to define such phenomena but to explore their effects on the school music that existed within such regimes. Japanese and British imperialism evolved in distinct ways, but the enactment of imperialism in school music was, ultimately, similar. Two different examples of early twentieth century empires will be considered – Taiwan, a colony of Japan between 1895 and 1945, and the British colonies that were to become Australia with their Federation in 1901 (Parsons, 1999). Central to the notion of empire was the imperial ruler, either emperor or empress. Empire and ruler were celebrated by school children in song and pageant, demonstrating the use of music as a vehicle of messages to be inculcated in the young participants.

Abstract:
Although remote sensed methods provide reliable basis for identifying the amount and spatial configuration of deforestation, they cannot solely explain its underlying causes. For that, we need to complement the imagery analysis with socio-economic data from household or farm-level studies, because these domestic units affect process such migration, land-use, and technology choice. Thus, by combining remote imagery sensor and social survey, we obtain a merged analytical framework, which has the potential to improve our understanding on the determinants of human-driven forest fragmentation. We present such a methodological framework for studying deforestation in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Two empirical studies a remote sensing analysis and a farm-level survey were put together in the context of a wider project focusing on forest fragmentation process in the northeastern Guanabara region, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We show that, rather than `patchwork quilt' methodologies, we need theoretical-oriented frameworks that give sense to the use of different landscape ecological approaches and methods (imagery analysis, mathematical modeling and social studies) in order to document and interpret land-use changes.
