Innovation has become the dominant economic idea of our time and has resulted in a proliferation of innovation-oriented rhetoric, and policies. There is a great need to understand and harness innovation, but it has proven to be as difficult to measure as it is to define. At present, the quest to understand innovation hinges on finding reliable ways to identify and measure it, the most promising of which is the analysis of patent information. Patents have been increasingly used by economists to track inventiveness, the transmission of knowledge, and their economic impact. However, it is evident that the maiority of patents have little or no economic potential, and so merely observing the number of patents provides little insight on innovation. It has become important, therefore, to develop reliable methods for measuring the true economic potential of patents. Of all the solutions proposed, the analysis of patent citations is the most promising. This study examines the relationship between patent citations and the private economic value of patents, and makes both theoretical and empirical contributions.
(cont.) First, the previous literature is reviewed to further extend and clarify the theory of the economic meaning of patent citations. Second, a typology of patent value is proposed to contextualize the relevance of the theory under different appropriation regimes. Finally, this study tests the economic meaning of citations using a new dataset where the licensing value of a group of patents is observed directly. The findings confirm a consistent relationship between patent citations and two different measures of patent value.

Full textThis study is divided into five sections. The first section consists of patent applications and granted patents issued by USPTO, WIPO), and EPO. In this section the relationship between the GDP and country’s patent quantity is analysed. The second section analysis the patent literature in MEDLINE. In this section a scientometric analysis is performed to assess the quantitative trend of patent literature in MEDLINE throughout 1965-2005. The third section analysis the patent literature in the SCI. In this section all documents indexed as a topic of “patents” in the SCI throughout 1965-2005 are analysed. The fourth section analysis the citations to the patent documents indexed in the SCI, and illustrate the average number of cited references per paper for patent citing documents. The fifth section analysis the references per paper in the SCI through 1970-2005. The Analyses of data showed: The USA is the leading country filing and granting patents followed by Japan and Germany respectively. The half-life of citations to the patent-documents is 41% higher than the half-life of citations to the general scientific documents in the SCI. The number of references per paper from 1970 to 2005 has steadily increased. The rough constant percentage of self-citation of journals and the growing increase of references per paper led to the absolute growing number of self-citations and to the increase of the Impact Factor of the citing journals in the SCI. The editorial policy of languages is being changed in MEDLINE and in the SCI. The consideration of policy makers in these databases have been focused on the literature of science in English. There was a tendency in the last decades towards collaboration in scientific publishing with American authors that can be observed in the SCI with authors from different countries.

This dissertation empirically explores the facets of corporate innovation in the firm and the ultimate effects on firm value. In the first chapter I identify firm innovation as a new channel by which employee treatment affects firm value. Growth and innovation incentive theories support positive effects of “good” employee treatment on innovation. Alternatively, entrenchment theory suggests such treatment will lead to complacency and shirking, hence deterring innovation. These opposing views merit investigation since in the “new economy”, human capital is increasingly essential to firm value and the growth and success of a firm has become more reliant on corporate innovation. Using the KLD Research & Analytics, Inc. SOCRATES database and newly acquired patent/citation data, I find an overall significant positive relationship between positive employee treatment and innovation quantity (patents) and quality (citations per patent); both measures are significantly correlated to firm value in the literature. Furthermore, I find that favorable employee treatment improves innovation focus – innovation projects more related to firms’ core business. These findings, robust to an alternate data source and endogeneity concerns, are consistent with the theories of growth and innovation incentive and suggest corporate innovation represents a channel by which employee treatment enhances firm value. In the second chapter I use the context of mergers & acquisitions (M&A) to investigate the effect of firm innovative ability. Acquirer announcement returns in M&A are known for being low on average; however, recent studies indicate greater abnormal announcement and long-run returns to firms motivated by the acquisition of innovation. Although acquiring innovation is an important motive for M&A, prior studies have ii mostly focused on the characteristics of target firms. In this paper, I explore the effect of acquirers’ innovative abilities in the M&A transaction. I propose that acquirer’s ex-ante ability to transform internal and external innovation investment into a tangible valued output (i.e. sales or profitability) is subject to asymmetric information. I apply a unique measure of innovative ability to explain the cross-sectional variation in acquirer returns for mergers and find a positive relation between acquirers’ innovative abilities and their abnormal returns around M&A announcements. I further discover that greater CARs in high innovative ability acquirers only exist in a subsample of M&As in the later life cycle of firms. For early merger events (the first three M&As after IPOs), acquirers’ innovative abilities are not associated with significantly larger announcement returns, suggesting an altered market perception of the value impact of acquisitions of innovation and innovative ability.

Patent citations are extensively used for measuring the importance of patents, regarded as the knowledge flow among countries and technology fields for analysis, and applied to mapping technological trajectories for studying the evolution of the technology. However, patent citation analysis is subject to some uncertainties. Many patents are cited only with slightly relevant because they are only related to one very specific technical aspect. Moreover, many patents which should have been cited are missed. This paper aims to identify the relevant citations and the relevant un-cited patents in order to present the more precise view in the citation relationships. Both of BC and CC methods are utilized to identify the relevant citations and the relevant un-cited patents. Besides, the occurrence of relevant citations and relevant un-cited patents are related to the citation time lag (CTL), which is the time necessary for the cited patent being cited by the citing patent. The results show that citations with shorter CTL are more possible to be relevant, and this phenomenon is more obvious by BC. It reveals that it takes time for any two patents to establish their CC relations. Some relevant information cannot be dug out by CC, and therefore BC is the better approach of the identification.

A patent's number of citations is often considered an indicator to the value or impact of the invention covered by the patent. However, patent applications, specifically utility patent applications, are published 18 months after filing and before they are granted a period of time later. These so-called pre-grant publications are public information and are citable as relevant prior art by the applicants or examiners of later patent applications before and after the pre-grant publications are granted. However, most patent analyses consider only the citations to the patents and ignore the citations to their pre-grant publications. This omission may lead to erroneous analytic result as the pre-grant publication and the corresponding patent cover the same invention. This study assesses the impact of such omission by comparing about 500,000 US utility patents and their pre-grant publications. The statistics shows that over 50% patents may be misjudged because of omission, suggesting that analyst should combine the citations to the pre-grant publications and to the patents together when evaluating patents or conducting patent citation analysis.

This study examines whether patent citation impact, a leading indicator of firms’ innovation capabilities, is associated with firm value and whether this association is mediated by analyst recommendations. The results indicate that change of patent citation impact is positively associated with firm valuation, supporting the value relevance of innovation capability. We further find that patent citation has a positive impact on analyst recommendations for the firm. In addition, analyst recommendations at least partially mediate the effects of patent citation on firm value. That is, analyst recommendations represent a mechanism through which patent citation affects market valuation. Overall, this study reveals the impact of patent citation on analyst-based outcomes and price formation and calls attention to the construct of patent citation as a key intangible asset for the investor community.

Many organizations have valued the importance of patent information. According to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) report, use of patent information can create competitive advantage of firms. A number of empirical studies have reviewed the analysis of patent citations and examined the determining factors of patent citations. The purpose of this study is to analyze and explore the determinants of patent citations in Taiwanese firms. The observation time is from 1991 to 1995 with 481 patents in the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) database. We used the descriptive statistics and correlation coefficient to extract the determining factors of patent citations. This study distinguishes factors of affecting patent citations into the factors of patent and firm.. Patent’s factors include examiners, inventors, self-citation, patent family, and backward citations. Firm’s factors include R&D intensity, the firm age, and firm size. Our samples are mostly from Information and Electronic Industry, accounting for 88% of the samples. "Self-citation" in Patent’s factor is significantly positive effects on patent citations. Part of firm’s factors including "R&D intensity" and "firm age" are significant on patent citations.

The arrival of the era of knowledge economy has gradually made intelligence property more important an asset. However, along with the accumulation of the applications of patents a company has made, comes the enormous amount of expense of the maintenance fee of the rights. As a result, evaluate patents’ value and determine whether a company should keep holding on to them has become a complicated problem and a research topic scholars have been working on. Some of the scholars had proved with substantial evidences in the previous literatures that the value of a patent has positive correlation with the number of patent forward citations. However, there are scholars indicating otherwise with database analysis and doubt the results. The research reviewed the related previous literature and define the scope of the subject with the R&D senior executive of the partner cooperation. After searching for the patent pool aimed to determine, the R&D senior executive will then asked to subjectively judge the value of the patent. At last, the research will investigate the credibility of the determination that the value of the patent correlates with the number of patent forward citations. The result of the research are listed as below: 1. Under the integrate data analysis of the research, the group of patents that are valued higher by the expert does not necessarily have higher number of patent forward citations; 2. In this research, the forward citation analysis of forward citation number with or under 99, the group of patents having higher value, determined by the expert, have a higher forward citations in average; 3. Within the scope of the subject’s technical field in this research, based on the judgement of the expert, although using the forward citations of patents as index of patent value has some certain extent of referencing, there is still a high probability of misjudge; 4. In the research, patents having 0 forward citation still has the chance to be determined as middle or high value. As a result, expert’s consultant is still required to correctly determine the value of a patent.

Under the development of knowledge economy, while an industry is constructing the essential production factors for management purpose, concerning the creativity and utility of the intangible asset is necessary. The intangible assets have been given new economic value by the evaluation, especially those related to intellectual property. For instance, patent has transform from protecting the inventors’ technical knowledge concept to making profits by enabling the patentee to license, make transactions, or pledge after acquiring a value through evaluation. According to scholars such as Trajtenberg, Albert, and Ernst, patent citation indicators are capable of determining the economic or technical value of a patent. Thus, most of the patent evaluations nowadays use patent citation indicators. However, by returning to the origin of patent citation system and how the patent examiners view the “patent citation”, we found tremendous difference between the concept of the scholars and the patent examiners. As a result, the thesis aim to compare the difference between the patent forward citation indicated and experts judged patent values. Through analyzing patent information, the research studies the relation between the patent forward citation and the patent value, trying to understand whether the number of forward citations are capable of comprehensively evaluate the patent value, or whether the acknowledged patent value have corresponding patent forward citation. The analysis result are summarized as followed: 1. The patent forward citations are actually affected by the time; 2. The mere number of patent forward citation are not comprehensive of evaluating whether a patent is valuable; 3. The patent value does not correspond to the patent forward citation.

From OEM, ODM to OBM, enterprises gradually have their own creative ideas. Only appropriate patent strategy can lead to advantageous position. However, no matter patent alliance, co-development or self-R&D strategy, enterprises must be well-acquainted with the patent distribution. Based on the truth that current patent classification needing citation drawing which requires time-consuming effort, this research attempts to construct a matrix analysis method. This research takes vein recognition technology in biotechnology as example. First, key words will be confirmed and the patent information in USPTO can be collected. Secondly, patent matrix composed of Core, Margin, Blue-ocean and Red-ocean types is proposed around the average value of Self-Citations and Other-Citations. Third, patent counts, patent citations, involved companies and patent age are utilizes as parameters to build four different models. For the last, patent type will be discriminated and plays the foundation of the result of verification. This research shows, vein recognition is still in its initial stage without mainstream technology. About patent classification differentiation rate, in the whole, Self-Citations is higher than Other-Citations. Involved Assignee Patent Age Weighted Count and Involved Assignee Share both are higher than Involved Assignee Count, Assignee Patent Age Weighted Count is higher than Assignee Patent Share. D set with the highest differentiation rate shows that four parameters Age Weighted Count composition including Self-Citations Count, Patent Count, Other-Citations Count and Involved Assignee Count, are the best model to reflect patent type. The evidence research shows, the differentiation imposes on four sets of parameters A, B, C, D, the differentiation rate will be 62.5%, 75.0%, 68.8% and 87.5% respectively. This research can fast discriminate the single patent by acquirement of related parameters. It also can be a reference to choose technical cooperation or Design Around.

Patentees, Entities, and even countries, everyone wants to know how much a patent or a group of patents is worth. People have been using accounting method to evaluate patent value, patent analysis to assess comprehensive value, and even patent indicators of the bibliometric method to evaluate. This research focus on patents about mid-drive electric bike. By letting the experts to evaluate the value of a patent and comparing them to the value determine by the patent forward citation indicators, we try to understand the appropriateness of using the forward citations as a patent indicator. The research cooperates with the senior engineer from the R&D department of the Cycling & Health Tech Industry R&D Center. After letting the expert manual read and judged the patent value of the US patent related to mid-drive electric bike, distribute the patents into three groups: low value, middle value, and high value. Then, analyze the outcome of patent value groups with the historical patent applications and patent forward citations. The historical patent applications and patent forward citation analysis are used to understand the developing trend of the subject over the years and the overview of the forward citation; the distribution of patent value groups rated by the expert, forward citation trend analysis, and individual analysis of each patent value groups are used to determine the difference and relationship between patent value rated by the expert and forward citation. At last, the additional discussion of patents having 0 forward citations are used to understand the performance of the patents which are unable to be determine by the forward citation indicator. The result are organized and listed as follows: (1) The mid-drive electric bike industry is growing drastically in recent years, the analysis subject is a new technology; (2) The higher the patent value rated by the expert is, the more the average forward citations; (3) From the perspective of the expert rating result, the earlier patents have higher proportion being low value, and the more recent ones are more likely to be middle value or high value; (4) Because of the accumulation of time, chronologically, patents in the mid-term have higher forward citations than the others, but are rated more to be low and middle value; (5) In the technical field of the research, with the baseline of the expert rating, using forward citation to determine the patent value has a higher probability of misjudge; (6) Patents having 0 forward citation are possible to be rated all low, middle, or high value, as a result, patent forward citation indicator should still rely on the expert’s judgement.

Semiconductors are the key fundamental components used in all kinds of electronic products. Commonly, the industrial technology development is regarded as an indicator of modernization. The main objective of this study is to explore the influence of the patent citations, the R&D expenditures and the firms’ size to the patent performance, which the U.S. semiconductor industry is considered as the main research subject through the patent performance measure from 1999 to 2008. There are three investigative results of this study. First, the patent citations are positively associated with patent performance. Patent citations can be used by measuring the quality and impact of technology. When the company has good quality, or some of the prior art patents, the company will likely invest more patent applications to protect their own interests are not violated. Second, the R&D expenditures are significantly positive to the patent performance. Patents can be regarded as R&D activities of companies from the results. Most company will apply for patents to protect the results of research and development to reduce the risk of being plagiarized. Finally, the firms’ size was negative associated with the patent performance. Although it’s not very significantly negative, but it represents the larger the scale the more unfavorable for annual new issued patent.

This study uses artificial neural networks to explore the influences of total patents, total citations, and patent scope upon market value of the semiconductor industry in the United States. The patent data are collected from United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and financial data are collected from the database of COMPUSTAT. The result shows that total patents, total citations, and patent scope have the similar effect upon corporate market value in the semiconductor companies in the United States. For example, they have positive effect before reaching the optimal point and have negative effect after reaching the optimal point. Therefore, this paper suggests the semiconductor companies in the United States should increase total patents and total citations, moderately enhance their patent scope, the technical superiority in the company to increase corporate market value.

In the knowledge economy and the complex environment of rapid change, the constant innovation has become an important survival rule for companies. How to catch the external knowledge has become an important issue, and external knowledge can be acquired from the knowledge flow. In this study, the analyzed periods are distinguished by wafer size in six-inches (1976~1991), eight-inches (1989~1999) and twelve-inches (1997~2011). The methodologies of patentometrics and social network analysis (SNA) are adopted, and research and development (R&D) cooperation and patent citations are treated as the agents for strong ties and weak ties of knowledge spillover. Firstly, the author analyzed the structure characterisitics of knowledge spillover networks and the main companies that utilize the strong and weak ties to spill knowledge. Secondly, The author classified companies into four technological positions: leader, broker, follower, and isolated company. On the other hand, companies were also classified into six roles of the industry value chain: integrated device manufacturer (IDM), IC design, foundry, packaging & testing, equipment, and others. The author analyzed the difference of utilizing the strong and weak tie of knowledge spillover, the difference of targets with which companies spill knowledge, and the the impact of the change of the companies with the technological position on knowledge spillover. Finally, A case analysis of knowledge spillover is addressed for the top IC foundries. The results of this study show that: 1. Knowledge spillover among semiconductor companies occurs broadly through strong ties, while the weak ones of knowledge spillover are mostly used within the company cluster; 2. Technological leaders and IDM are the highly active participants for knowledge spillover; 3. Technological leaders, IDMs, and foundries are the main targets with which companies spill knowledge; 4. Whether semiconductor companies with the technological position change or not, the patent count and the degree of their participation remain similar; 5. The interaction between strong ties and weak ties of knowledge spillover is insignificant during the chip era evolution; 6. There are similar knowledge spillover actions among main IC foundries. Based on the findings, it is recommended that the mainstream of semiconductor technology development could be captured by monitoring the companies that are technological leaders with the role of IDM or foundry. Semiconductor companies could trace the developers of common technology by observing the strong tie network of knowledge spillover, and they could trace the developers of particular technology by observing the weak tie network of knowledge spillover. Semiconductor companies could also measure the similarity between themselves and competitors based on common targets of knowledge spillover. Foundries could develop partnership with IDMs from vertical division of work into horizontal cooperation. Foundries in Taiwan should continue to develop differentiated technologies in order to ensure technical superiority of their R&D alliances.

The patent citation analyses rely on the citations between patents, including quality of patents, knowledge flow and spillover, technology development and industrial trend. The inventors record relevant information as prior art but not all the relevant prior studies would be cited as references. Some highly relevant patents may be unused for the citation time lag (CTL). This paper used the bibliographical coupling (BC) and Pareto principle to identify the unused relevant patents (URP). Some of the missing citation links can then be made up by adding the URP and an enhanced patent citation network (EPCN) can be constructed by taking the URP into account. The patent citation network (PCN) and EPCN were discussed at patent and assignee level in this paper. The differences between the two networks were studied through the Freeman vertex betweenness centrality and the Johnson’s hierarchical clustering. The light emitting diode (LED) illuminating technology was chosen for case study in this paper in order to demonstrate the feasibility of the research methodology. As shown in this work, the relationship between patents can be enhanced by adding the URP.

The objective of this research is to set up a criterion for classifying the patents by their importance and value. Bradford’s law provided a practical method for us to find this criterion and verified the unequal distribution of patent data related to forward citation. Groos droop was also verified which presented in the industries studies that revealed there would be a rule of higher number of patents containing fewer forward citations. The meaning of patent data scattering was also deeply elaborated and illustrated in some growing patterns. Based on more numerical discussion, it was more precisely depicted that how the distributions in several zones of patent data grew which Bradford was mentioned in the industrial studies. Meanwhile, the comparative discussions on the patent data distributions of three industries were also verified that there would be the similar trends among them. The managerial implication was discussed in the study as well. It was emphasized that a firm should have more of the patent belonged to the first zone and make effort to focus on the development of the relative technology. The future works were supposed that using the valuable patents, the first zone’s patents, was more meaningful than the numerical count of all the patents. Therefore, the other studies about the prediction of firm’s performance could modify the independent variable according the criterion made from Bradford. Besides, taking the entire firm’s granted patents as a Bradford curve to see the overall development pattern was also a technological development method.

In recent years, there are many applications for patent analysis to forecast emerging technologies. Especially, citation plays an important role in the patent analysis field. However, current patent citations have certain drawbacks, such as that is difficult to grasp the overall relationship among patent documents, and citation analysis is a time-consuming task because it requires an exhaustive search. Therefore, this thesis applies an incidence matrix to analyze the citation information in patent citation networks. In order to analyze the patent citation and identify the critical patents more effectively, the matrix is analyzed using two algorithms, the topological sorting algorithm and the triangularization algorithm are combined with network measurements as a result of those contributions. Finally, some general discussions of patterns from the results of a patent citation model are presented along with conclusions.

A patent family comprises the information of a patent portfolio in an enterprise. While it is possible to get the information of a patent’s prior art by means of patent citation analysis; however, no method has been proposed to integrated a patent family and a patent citation effectively. Based on the idea of “focusing first, and then finding the details” which arose from this study, this report proposes a new model that combines patent family analysis with patent citation analysis into the Innovative Product Development Process (IPDP), and our research shows that the new model can indeed promote increased effectiveness of product design to extract useful patent intelligence systematically, including: 1) management based and technology based patent searching, 2) building the patent family based on an industry basic patent, 3) filtering the patent family to obtain key patents, 4) the use of patent citations to trace the necessary technology information in product design, and 5) combining TRIZ theory to build patent technology performance maps, and discover product niches. This new procedure is illustrated by applying it to a real life study.

The object of this research is to enhance the former patent citation rate analysis method which utilizes one fixed citation window for every agency at all times by introducing a concept of dynamic citation windows and to extend the analysis for comparisons among agencies. The idea of cited half-life was adapted for patent assessment to establish a model of annually dynamic citation windows for each agency. Based on each agency’s annual citation window, its annual citation rate can then be obtained to measure its patent bibliometric performance. Because different agencies may have disparate attributes, a normalized citation rate was also proposed to measure each agency’s corresponding rank comparatively to the average of all the agencies. The dynamic citation window represents more accurately the patent citation cycle time for technology analysis which is a major research and management task in technology industry. Three industries were chosen, semiconductor, communication, and drug industry, as target agencies to study their citation window patterns and demonstrate the advantages by using dynamic citation windows for patent citation rate analysis. Their annual citation rate changes were detailed and normalized citation rates were obtained to show their corresponding ranks comparatively to the average of all industries and provide a base of cross field comparison. IBM is also taken as an agency to test and verify the cross field comparison character of nCR.

Since the life cycle of Hi-Tech products becomes shorter and technology development and variety of market uncertainty get more complicated, the Network relation has more influence on these phenomena. Under the same environment and the limited resources, strategic makers have to deliberate the competition, cooperation or the complementariness of competition and cooperation strategy. In the past, researchers who only used dyadic view for patent citation analysis, so they can’t find the triadic or even multi information. In addition, some scholars even thought the traditional patient citation analysis were mature, if someone who wants to find more information, they should used new analytic method. Hence, the traditional patent citation analysis was a good contribution, but sometime limitations were caused of error information. As the result, we adopt the popular concept, social network, to discuss the position, role, influence and the situation of interaction with limited resources in RFID industry. Moreover, we also confer on the strength of the relation and the situation within the internal area. In short, the study will discuss the influence of structure and characteristics of firm from the whole, cluster and individual level with the top 20 firms, produce patent occupied 95% from all data, in the RFID industry. Discussing when firms in an environment, limited in resources, what the operation of these firms will do. The empirical results show that the characteristic and structure of firms certainly influence the relation of each other and the strategic choice. For firms at whole level, the technology diffusers are more independence; the technology absorbers require higher dependence; medium firms have more broker benefits from the technology transmission. In addition, the concept of Cluster and Blockmodeling shows that under the same environment and limited resources, the complementariness of competition and cooperation would appear at the same time. Finally, from the individual level, we could find firms who have more specialism and basic technology in the field and will be the core group in the future. The study expands the citation information of patent owned by firms through Network views and offers more messages.

Patent analysis is very important information to compete with the competitors of enterprises and control the research progress for business. There are more and more scholars and research methodology to help patent analysis, but most crucial thing is that lots of patent information like the citing number only provided the emphasis of current time point; it can not get the emphasis of future from citing number. Social network analysis is a theory to analyses network graph, discus the actors function in the social network and it can present the current patent value by patent citation graph. Betweenness and closure are the major two forces to affect the future advance by the network structure of node. This study hopes penetrate the social network analysis to research patent citation graph can predict the future advance for every patent and provide the useful information for patent scholars.

Patents are important assets in a company. It not only represents the technology abilities, but also represents the competitive advantage of a company. Each patent owns different features that will affect the quality of patent in the future. Determining the impact from patent features to patent quality is always important for R&;D strategies. In this study, social network is regarded as a mediator to explore the relationship between patent features and patent quality. The analytical results shows that patent features will affect patent quality through network position. Thus, this study provides a method for the purpose of predicting patent quality and finds that a patent with higher originality or shorter technology cycle time will enhance patent quality through network position. Patent features are different depending on variation of industry environment. Thus, this study further explores the moderation efficiency of patent types for finding the different behavior in citation network with different patent types. This study suggests that it is need to adjust R&;D strategies by different purpose of using technology. At least for technology-oriented patents and service-oriented patents, the R&;D strategies should be different between them.

The paper proposes a new approach to create a patent classification system to replace the IPC or UPC system for conducting patent analysis and management. The new approach is based on co-citation analysis of bibliometrics. The traditional approach for management of patents, which is based on either the IPC or UPC, is too general to meet the needs of specific industries. In addition, some patents are placed in incorrect categories, making it difficult for enterprises to carry out R&D planning, technology positioning, patent strategy-making and technology forecasting. Therefore, it is essential to develop a patent classification system that is adaptive to the characteristics of a specific industry. The analysis of this approach is divided into 3 phases. Phase I selects appropriate databases to conduct patent searches according to the subject and objective of this study and then select basic patents. Phase II uses the co-cited frequency of the basic patent pairs to assess their similarity. Phase III uses factor analysis to establish a classification system and assess the efficiency of the proposed approach. The main contribution of this approach is to develop a patent classification system based on patent similarities to assist patent manager in understanding the basic patents for a specific industry, the relationships among categories of technologies and the evolution of a technology category. PCA can provide rich information for patent analysis than other classification systems.

In this research, we use the United States approved patent of the solar photovoltaic technology for the sample period from 1995-2007 to study the impact of the backward citation on the probability of patent transfer, With the Probit model analysis, we find that the patent backward citation has negative effect on the transfer probability. This also means the more backward citations, the lower the degree of patented innovations or breakthrough technique. Then we dismantle the patent backward citation step by step. We find that the patent literature citations are positively related to transfer probability because of the patent’s rich technical background. Non-patent literature citations have negative effect on transfer, because of the more non-patent literature citations mean the more basic on technology, or are relatively immature in a particular technical field Finally we disassemble patent literature citations into U.S. and non-patent citations, and also disassemble non-patent literature citations into scientific reference and non-scientific reference. The results show that both the US and non-US patent citations have the positive effects on patent transfer. This implies that transfer will not be restricted by the nation of cited patents, and there is a positive correlation between technology spillovers and transfer. Scientific reference and non-scientific reference are negatively affect transfer probability. Scientific references are those published literature of the ISI-Web of knowledge database, but scientific references are not statistically significant. Non-scientific references include conference proceedings, without an assessment standard, their quality may be difficult to evaluate, therefore reduce the probability of transfer.

Wind power is a common renewable energy. Three times of energy transformation from wind energy to electricity reduce the capture of the wind energy for wind generators. A wind power-compressed air storage system increases the capture of the wind energy by reducing the times of energy transformations. However, few articles gave attention to the patent analysis about the system. This research studied the patent citation analysis of the wind power-compressed air storage systems, including the patent bibliomatrics, patent citation and technology function matrix of patents about the wind power-compressed air storage system. From the patent bibliomatrics analysis, some patents about the system were notified since the first was approved in 1909. Most of the patents were approved after 1998. Besides, most of the assignees of the patents are U.S. corporations according the analysis about inventors and assignees. For the present, the wind power-compressed air storage technology is in the beginning. The study analyzed patent citation and technology function matrix about the patents of the technology. The wind energy industry could get much benefit from the trends of technology shown in the patent citation analysis.

A systematic methodology to analyze the quality of patents is developed and presented in this thesis. We focus on patents which belong to a particular technology and develop an indicator of patent quality by using patent citation data. Traditional simple patent citation counts are not informative enough to be used for patent quality classification. We analyze patent citations and establish an essential patent indicator by considering several critical factors. The first is time factor, the second is assignee factor, the third is self and other citation factor, and the fourth is citation layer factor. Citations are calculated by considering first the time factor and then modifed by the other three factors. With essential patent indicator we can provide a patent quality index and discover the trend of the technology used by enterprises who have better knowledge in the quality of these technologies.
