This article explains the Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt (FUD) factor with patent searching. FUD also applies to aspects of patents other than searching. The Internet has made patent searches easy, but there is always a chance that something will be overlooked. The main reason to search patents is to evaluate the likelihood that an invention is new and unobvious enough to be patentable. However, there is no law or Patent Office regulation that requires you to perform a patent search before filing a patent application. In fact, the Patent Office will always conduct a search once you file a patent

‘Additive’ goods and services are defined as those that improve with use. They are not naturally rival, or even non-rival, but are “anti-rival.” Information is an example. Information can be made excludable through the use of patents and copyrights, however this does not necessarily lead to socially optimal production and allocation. A more flexible, open access, and decentralized process for the production and allocation of information could improve social welfare. Review of existing and proposed technologies for locating leaks during hydrostatic testing of buried gas transmission pipelines was performed. Articles, reports, and patents having information on leak location were catalogued. Potential technologies were evaluated for further development. Techniques which merit further attention include: 1) Injecting trace gas in the test water; 2) Searching for the maximum acoustic emission signal strength that corresponds to the leak site; 3) Ground radar for detection of water leaks; and 4) Modifying an instrumented pig used in sewer lines for gas pipeline
