Abstract:
This thesis deals with the general problem of robot motion planning and control. It proposes the hypothesis that it should bepossible to create a generic software framework capable of dealing with all robot motion planning and control problems, independent of the robot being used, the task being solved, the workspace obstacles or the algorithms employed. The thesis work then consisted of identifying the requirements and creating a design and implementation of such a framework. This report motivates and documents the entire process. Abstract:
Planning optimal paths for large numbers of robots is computationally expensive. In this thesis, we present a new framework for multirobot path planning called subdimensional expansion, which initially plans for each robot individually, and then coordinates motion among the robots as needed. More specifically subdimensional expansion initially creates a one-dimensional search space embedded in the joint configuration space of the multirobot system. When the search space is found to be blocked during planning by a robot-robot collision, the dimensionality of the search space is locally increase

Physical access control systems (PACS) deal with the security of the availability of resources. They work as an alternative to traditional manual security access control. Access control has two variants, the logical which deals with computer environments and the physical which deals with the physical entry into a property or warehouses. However, offline physical access control systems cannot enforce the user’s path making it unsuitable for use in classified areas, such as places where the public is restricted. A major factor that negatively impacts flight operations globally is adverse weather. To reduce the impact of adverse weather, avoidance procedures such as finding an alternative flight path can usually be carried out. Abstract:
This dissertation is an examination of methods for computing an option price using a path integral framework. The framework, developed by Chiarella, El-Hassan and Kucera, is based on the Black and Scholes paradigm. The path integral is backward recursive with the payoff known at expiry and has no closed form solution. Three specific financial derivatives are used in this dissertation, they are, European (call and put), American put and a down and out call (Barrier type) option. The work in this dissertation examines three methods to approximate the option price. The first is a review of the

How- ever, owing to various reasons, e.g., change of driving direction/routes, weak GPS signal due to bad weather, etc, path re-computations still often occur for a user driving on the road, incurring path planning query requests. Upon a request, existing approaches may fail to respond promptly when there is an overwhelmed amount of requests to the server and thus mandate a new approach for efficient path planning. In this

Constrained dynamic performance and control models of complex engineering systems can be represented in the form of a Differential Algebraic Equation (DAE) system. The high-index of this DAE system poses computational challenges. However, when success-fully solved, this system can be used for prescribed path control, wherein an inverse simulation can be performed to know the system behavior prior to operation for desired output. In this work, high-index DAE regularization challenge is brought out, and its application illustrated with variety of case studies encompassing robotic car, gas turbin

Background: South Africa accounts for more than a seventh of the global population living with HIV/AIDS and TB, and ranks highest in HIV/TB co-infection worldwide. Consequent high child mortality is exacerbated by child malnutrition, which is an important indicator of health status and is associated with morbidity as well as mortality. Rural areas usually present with the greatest burden of morbidity and mortality, yet the extent of geographical disparities in child mortality, malnutrition and HIV/TB has hardly been explored. Abstract:
The efficient parallel execution of scientific applications is a key challenge in high-performance computing (HPC). With growing parallelism and heterogeneity of compute resources as well as increasingly complex software, performance analysis has become an indispensable tool in the development and optimization of parallel programs. This thesis presents a framework for systematic performance analysis of scalable, heterogeneous applications. Based on event traces, it automatically detects the critical path and inefficiencies that result in waiting or idle time, e.g. due to load imbalances betwee
