Drug abuse has always been a world problem. Recently people abuse both controlled and prescribed drugs. Opioids, cocaine, cannabis and amphetamines are the most widely abused drugs. In drug-related deaths, post-mortem analysis, which includes autopsy and collecting samples for histological and toxicological analysis, is necessary to be carried out to investigate whether any drug has contributed to the cause of death. Abstract:
The work described in this thesis deals with three aspects of quality assurance in the field of forensic toxicology: proficiency testing schemes, validation of analytical methods for the piperazine group of abused drugs and validation of the police field impairment test, used at the roadside to test drivers for drug-induced impairment. Proficiency Testing: Long term reviews were performed for two forensic external quality assurance schemes. Rounds 30 (in 2007) to 48 (in 2012) of the UKAS-accredited commercial Quartz Forensic Blood Toxicology Proficiency Testing Scheme (PTS), and a ten year per

Abstract:
The identification and management of individuals with a perceived high risk of future violence is of great priority for mental health professionals and the criminal justice system. The overall aim of this thesis is to examine the validity of the assessment and treatment of violence in forensic populations with a specific focus on the contribution of dynamic risk factors in predicting recidivism. Chapter One presents a conceptual literature review which provides an overview of the development of violence risk assessment approaches, and examines the predictive validity of dynamic factors in pred

Abstract:
Endometriosis is a puzzling condition responsible for considerable morbidity. The literature is characterised by a large number of reports but there is surprisingly little agreement on the aetiology and pathophysiology. In particular the relationship between mild endometriosis and subfecundity is uncertain. The aim of the studies described in this thesis was to document the incidence, and symptomatology of endometriosis in the fertile and infertile population, to study the natural history of endometriosis in infertile women and to study folliculogenesis, fertilisation and pathophysiology of pe

Takaichi, Kenichi. "Nail analysis in forensic toxicology for the detection of drug misuse." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2004. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/3533/.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the use of nail as an alternative biological specimen in forensic toxicology. Nail is a difficult analytical matrix from which to extract drugs because of its tough physical composition, based on keratin. The initial part of the project investigated the use of a cryogenic grinding method for fingernail clippings. Grinding at liquid nitrogen temperatures was found to be an effective procedure and the conditions were optimised to a two or three cycle programme of freezing and grinding. Small particle sizes were obtained of approximate size 1µm. It was established that drugs

The aim of this study was to investigate new methods of analysis which might be applied to forensic toxicology problems including those resulting from pesticides, particularly the quaternary ammonium herbicide group, and from drugs, particularly the benzodiazepine group. In the first part of this study, an efficient method for the determination of quaternary ammonium (QA) compounds (pesticides and drugs) in human whole blood was developed. The second part of this study concerned the development of a novel sorbents for solid phase extraction using molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). The appr
