The article reveals the arguments of the primacy of the Pope in the universal church given by the Ukrainian Catholic polemicist Theodore Skumynovych in the work "Przyczyny porzucenia Disuniey przezacnemu narodowi ruskiemu podane" (1643). Justifying the supremacy of the Roman cathedra, the writer gave an "argument from history" that Pope Sylvester I, having elevated the bishop of Byzantium Mitrophan to the patriarchal title, founded the Patriarchate of Constantinople. По аналогии с критикой первенства власти папы Римского, владыка Досифей критикует и чрезмерное первенство, которое защищали сторонники судебного и административного всевластия патриарха Константинопольского. The struggle for primacy in the Universal Church was first started between Rome and Alexandria, but in the middle of 5th Century it was Constantinople that became the most important rival of Rome. The increasing position of the Constantinopolitan bishop was caused by the fact that at the turn of the 4th century the city became capital of the Empire. So, it was the emperor’s interest to give to the bishop of their capital the same rights as those of the bishops of the Old Rome. At the end of the sixth century a dispute broke out between the popes and the patriarchs of Constantinople – first of all, between pope Gregory I the Great (590–604) and patriarch John IV the Faster (582–595) – over the epithet “Ecumenical”, which appeared in the title of John of Constantinople. This dispute is quite widely represented in the scientific literature, but since researchers almost always pay attention to this topic in general, their papers often miss many nuances contained in the texts of the letters of pope Gregory.
