This thesis considers the experiences that motivated the creation of an 1863 painting by American artist Eastman Johnson entitled The Lord is My Shepherd. An examination of the painting—which depicts a black man reading a Bible—reveals multiple artistic, social, political, and spiritual influences. Created in the midst of the American Civil War, the painting's inspiration derived from Johnson's New England childhood, training in Europe, encounters with the Transcendentalist movement, and his abolitionist views. Abstract:

Among the considerable manuscript production of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the Bible moralisee stands out by the number of miniatures and by the conception of the manuscript itself. The composition and many iconographical themes recall stained glass windows of contemporary cathedrals, such as Chartres, Sens, Bourges, or Canterbury in England.<br>The manuscript of the Bible moralisee to which this study is partly dedicated, is located in the Treasury of the Toledo cathedral chapter in Spain. Paru pour la première fois en 1604, Le Pelerin de Lorete du jésuite Louis Richeome a connu un succès important avec deux éditions supplémentaires, de nombreuses rééditions jusqu’en 1628 et des traductions. Après cette première moitié du XVIIe siècle, l’œuvre comme son auteur tombèrent dans l’oubli et ne connurent pas de nouvelle publication. Ce n’est qu’à partir de la fin XIXe siècle que les critiques, notamment Henri Brémond commencèrent à s’intéresser à Richeome et à son travail, mais sans pour autant y consacrer un ouvrage ou une édition critique.
