Serendipity has always played a role in research, and today the availability of digitised newspapers through Trove offers new opportunities for chance discoveries. A couple of years ago, Glenn R. Cooke — then Research Curator of Queensland Heritage at the Queensland Art Gallery — referred me to a snippet from The Queenslander of 15 October 1892, where the Melbourne correspondent writes: My attention was recently drawn to ‘Drifting’, a novel by a Queensland lady who uses the nom de plume of ‘Ellerton Gay.’ She lived, I believe, for eighteen years in Toowoomba, and is the wife of Mr. J. This thesis analyses the impact of life experience on Irish settlement patterns in colonial Victoria. It represents the first scholarly analysis of a settler farmer in the Pyalong district. The thesis focuses on how Irish settler Patrick Cooke adapted successfully to life in the Antipodes and how he forged a relationship with the land on which he settled. The significance of the study goes beyond one individual’s experience of late-nineteenth colonial settlement. With emphasis on the spatial connection between people and place, it provides new insights into the relationship of individual

“I have not tested this—it is secret recipe!” Sergei Filippov says, as he tends to a pot of what look like meatballs simmering on his small stove, and his kitchen fills with their aroma. “I don’t know if it will be any good. If not, we will have fish!” There are seventeen kinds of fish in the Barguzin River, Sergei tells me, and he has three varieties on hand tonight, in case his secret beef recipe fails to please. “Omul, sig, and—how do you say in English?—carp? I cook often. My wife is a teacher, she works a lot. I like to cook, but not all the time!” Sergei may well be the only person in his town who speaks more than a few words of English, and he didn’t learn it in school. He’s taught himself. “I began to learn English from an American friend of mine,” Sergei says. “Patricia. She came to stay with us. She did not speak Russian. I did not speak English. We began writing to each other, in both languages, side by side, on one piece of paper.” Sergei’s round face and wavy, dark hair carry hints of both Buryat and Russian, but mostly they carry a warm smile and a soft and welcoming demeanor not immediately found in many of his countrymen. He’s the first Russian I’ve met whom I felt immediately drawn to. We’ve come fifty kilometers up the Barguzin River from Baikal to stay with Sergei and his wife, Tania, here in the town of Barguzin. Through Andrei, we’re paying them for dinner, breakfast, and a night’s lodging in their small apartment. But I get the feeling that if he could afford it, Sergei might pay us for the visit. Sergei’s world barely even reaches Baikal, much less far beyond. But in this tiny town, he is a traveler. A few times a year, Andrei arrives with people like us, from America, Europe, Japan. And with each visit, Sergei’s world expands as he learns a bit more about life beyond Barguzin, beyond Baikal, beyond Russia.

John F. Hartwig of the University of California, Berkeley devised (Science 2014, 343, 853) conditions for the regioselective silylation of an arene 1 to give 2. The silyl group can directly be converted, inter alia, to halo, amino, alkyl, or hydroxyl. Jin-Quan Yu of Scripps La Jolla effected (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2014, 53, 2683) regioselective alkenylation of the arene 3 with 4 to give 5. Wei-Liang Duan of the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry described (Org. Lett. 2014, 16, 500) a related alkenylation protocol. Deping Wang of Henyang Normal University developed (Eur. J. Org. Chem. 2014, 315) inexpensive conditions for the conversion of an aryl bromide 6 to the corresponding phenol 7. Mamoru Tobisu and Naoto Chatani of Osaka University used (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2014, 136, 5587) a Ni catalyst to convert the lactam 8 to the aryl boronate 9. Patrick J. Walsh of the University of Pennsylvania found (Adv. Synth. Catal. 2014, 356, 165) conditions for the clean monoarylation of the amide 11 with 10 to give 12. In an application of the Catellani approach, Zhi- Yuan Chen of Jiangxi Normal University coupled (Chem. Eur. J. 2014, 20, 4237) the aryl iodide 13 with 14 to give the amino ester 15. Frederic Fabis of the Université de Caen-Basse-Normandie used (Chem. Eur. J. 2014, 20, 7507) Pd to catalyze the ortho halogenation (and alkoxylation) of the N-sulfonylamide 16 to give 17. Wen Wan of Shanghai University and Jian Hao of Shanghai University and the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry effected (Chem. Commun. 2014, 50, 5733) ortho azidination of the aniline 18 with 19, leading to 20. Jianbo Wang of Peking University found (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2014, 53, 1364) that the N-aryloxy amide 21 could be combined with the α-diazo ester 22 to give the ortho-alkenyl phenol 23. Silas P. Cook of Indiana University uncovered (Org. Lett. 2014, 16, 2026) remarkably simple conditions for the enantiospecific cyclization of 24 (65% ee) to 25 (63% ee). The development of arynes as reactive intermediates continues unabated. Pradeep Kumar of the National Chemical Laboratory, Pune, developed (Tetrahedron Lett. 2010, 51, 744) a new procedure for the conversion of an alcohol 1 to the inverted chloride 3. Michel Couturier of OmegaChem devised (J. Org. Chem. 2010, 75, 3401) a new reagent for the conversion of an alcohol 4 to the inverted fluoride 6. For both reagents, primary alcohols worked as well. Patrick H. Toy of the University of Hong Kong showed (Synlett 2010, 1115) that diethyl-lazodicarboxylate (DEAD) could be used catalytically in the Mitsunobu coupling of 7. Employment of 8 minimized competing acetate formation. In another application of hyper-valent iodine chemistry, Jaume Vilarrasa of the Universitat de Barcelona observed (Tetrahedron Lett. 2010, 51, 1863) that the Dess-Martin reagent effected the smooth elimination of a pyridyl selenide 10. Ken-ichi Fujita and Ryohei Yamaguchi of Kyoto University extended (Org. Lett. 2010, 12, 1336) the “borrowed hydrogen” approach to effect conversion of an alcohol 12 to the sulfonamide 13. Dan Yang, also of the University of Hong Kong, developed (Org. Lett. 2010, 12, 1068, not illustrated) a protocol for the conversion of an allylic alcohol to the allylically rearranged sulfonamide. Shu-Li You of the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry used (Org. Lett. 2010, 12, 800) an Ir catalyst to effect rearrangement of an allylic sulfinate 14 to the sulfone. Base-mediated conjugation then delivered 15. K. Rama Rao of the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad, devised (Tetrahedron Lett. 2010, 51, 293) a La catalyst for the conversion of an iodoalkene 16 to the alkenyl sulfide 17. Alkenyl selenides could also be prepared. James M. Cook of the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, described (Org. Lett. 2010, 12, 464, not illustrated) a procedure for coupling alkenyl iodides and bromides with N-H heterocycles and phenols. Hansjörg Streicher of the University of Sussex showed (Tetrahedron Lett. 2010, 51, 2717) that under free radical conditions, the carboxylic acid derivative 18 could be decarboxylated to the alkenyl iodide 19. Bimal K. Banik of the University of Texas–Pan American found (Synth.
