Full textThis thesis discusses the interaction of heritage, landscape and tourism and identifiestheir relationship, either associative or contradictory. Tourism, being the main sourceof financial activity in Greece influences and dominates almost every geographicallocation, particularly the islands, as these constitute priority destinations for visitors inevery island. Urban development and tourism have often contributed in compromisingthe integrity of natural and cultural heritage of islands, including their territories, water tables, customs and architecture. Without doubt, a key and decisive factor is thedisposition of local populations to act and react to these changes. Before everythingtransforms, we decided to study culture through the rural built heritage that dominatesa space that is insular and agricultural at the same time. In this framework, we decidedto choose as a case of study the island of Amorgos, in Cyclades, which seems toexhibit a moderate tourism development and has managed to preserve its profile andidentity. Tourism and rural landscape coexist harmoniously, keeping a balancebetween environment (landscape) and development (tourism), a balance that allowsthe preservation of the local identity, and has the potential to resist time. Asmethodology, we decided to use an inventory, which identifies rural buildingscontributes to the recognition and mapping out of the insular rural world

Full textFor more twenty years, one notes the emergence of the concept of "land" and the rediscovery of patrimony too. This double resurgence has concretized oneself in 1995 with the creation of the "lands" by a law, which is often, the occasion to mobilize the patrimony, to define these new spaces, to make them identifiable. In order to understand and to explain this phenomenon we chose to observe and study the construction of one of these new territories, the Lauragais, as a practitioner an ethnology of the alive one. Many are those which considered themselves, particularly in rural areas, life forgotten by the development ; the "land" allows to assert their reality, to build their identity, to be even opposed to national directives decided elsewhere. A significant question arises : attend one a transfer of the relations of domination in the social representations ? It will be necessary for us to define the concepts, and to treat many questions : heterogeneity and extension of the patrimonial field, the creation of a territorial identity, the use of the knowledge, the return of the myth, the commercialization of the culture, the political strategies. .

Full textThis thesis explores the social and historical environment in which the concept of Palestinian cultural heritage has been formulated throughout the past two centuries. The study, which is based on fieldwork, relies on an inventory of the manually operated, iron screw-mechanism olive presses (MISP) that still exist in situ in the rural area of the Ramallah governorate. This inventory constitutes an essential step in evaluating the heritage linked to the production of olive oil and in illustrating the rural proto-industry that existed by the second half of the 19th century in Palestine. Illustrating the bottom-up history of these findings and documenting the evolution of these techniques in view of offering a tool for the promotion and re-appropriation of this part of heritage as an inherent part of Palestinian culture, history and identity while incorporating it as an integral part of the greater Mediterranean olive oil culture

Full textThe reciprocal influences between competition law and geographical indications, in Europe and in Brazil, shows us different approaches adopted for the protection and development of the agricultural sector. This relationship is well established in numerous European relevant markets, particularly in France, being considered the intellectual property framework. This approach reveals some aspects of the agricultural common policy adopted in European Union, where appellations are intended to be used as a tool for internal market accomplishment, for reacting to overproduction/protectionism concerns and for aggregating value in order to increase exports. On the other hand, Brazil has not developed yet a clear competition policy in agricultural sector nor a strong geographical indication based market. This context derives from the Brazilian economical environment and competition law history, which encourage trademarks and biotechnology rather than geographical indications as an intellectual property framework for agricultural sector and food industry. Another reason is that Brazil is the owner of a great biodiversity which is not exploited yet, asking for a model of protection that does not fit exactly into the geographical indications requirements.Brazilian geographical indications is more requested only on the basis of external demand, as it can be seem in the markets of coffee and cachaça, demonstrating that the TRIPs agreements is not well adaptated into the Brazilian agricultural sector, leaving space for further sui generis intellectual property rights. Geographical indications are a legal concept created if only some specific social, cultural and economical conditions were reunited. Otherwise, as a social institution, geographical indications should be adapted in order to be applied in the Brazilian context. Furthermore, the economical and political environments promote the evolution of the concept of appellations of origin towards competition law in the European context, creating new goals to intellectual property

Full textThe fast growing sixties are responsible for a lot of pressure on the traditional landscape of the "Val de Loire" and many of its ensuing changes have altered the intrinsic nature of open spaces. If we aim at protecting our landscapes while re-arranging them one has to know all about their intimate nature. In order to do an unbiased analysis of the impact of this new arrangement it is necessary to draw a picture of the landscape legacy left by past generations before going into more recent changes. In my thesis, scenery is often referred to as being the reflection of our civilization. Let's see how this comes up in our ever more sophisticated society. In the rural world people are throwing off the yoke of constraint and we bear witness to a new distribution of properties. Streams and rivers are canalized and harnessed to prevent them from flooding the meadows nearby. Hedgerows are fast disappearing so that the eye takes in vast open spaces. In villages the housing uniformity has been steadily on the wane to be replaced by a more functional landscape tatting into account each individual's specific needs. This civilization, whose technical means have made it possible an emancipation from constraint imposed by mother nature, has reduced the gap between the different way of life, has equipped itself with important collective constructions and finally has played a paramount part on open spaces. The philosophy behind it all has changed and the functional seems to have the best although there exist some scattered interesting attempts at estimating the impact of new accomplishments and above all at enriching and maintaining some of our historical heritage
