Abstract: This article analyzes the patterns of relations held by brokers in areas that have an abangan culture. The broker in this study is botoh who acts as an intermediary between candidates and prospective voters in the 2020 Blitar Regency Pilkada (Regional Elections). The theory used is the contemporary patron-client theory proposed by James C. Scott, which aims to explore the patron-client characteristics possessed by botoh in Blitar Regency. Purpose: This study aims to understand the characteristics of patron-client relationship patterns found in the abangan region of Blitar Regency. In the Pilkada held in 2020, there is a relationship formed between candidate pairs, botoh, and clients. The relationship was formed because of the opportunities for benefits obtained by each party. Design/Methodology/Approach Descriptive qualitative research methods and in-depth interviews for information gathering can explain the patron-client characteristics of botoh. Findings: This study shows that botoh in abangan areas have seven characteristics, those are (1) short-term relationship span with candidates but long-term relationship span with their subordinates, (2) profit-based relationship pattern with both candidates and subordinates, (3) specialized influence on patrons and clients who have interests, (4) has a modern managed resource base, (5) minimal control over local resources, (6) botoh and his men are one of the community groups in Blitar Regency, (7) botoh has a dense relationship with patrons and clients who have similar characteristics. Originality/Value: This research focuses on understanding the characteristics of patron-client relationship patterns found in the abangan region of Blitar Regency.

Abstract:
Kata Kunci: Patron, Upah, Marayoka Abstract This study aims to determine the life of the farmer community before the wage system exists between patrons and clients and the occurrence of wages to shift or increase the economy of a patron or client, the impact of the patron-client relationship for the life of the farming community in the socio-cultural and economic fields in Marayoka (1970 -2018). The results of this study indicate that before the wage system exists between patrons and clients in Marayoka Village, agriculture is still subsistence, where people only work poorly to fulfill their daily lives and they are still very submissive and obedient to patrons without getting paid (voluntary), the community wage system has begun to look for its own life, the life of the farming community in Marayoka Village has begun to increase, especially in terms of its economy. It also has an impact on the local people's livelihood systems. From this study, it can be concluded that before the marayoka community wage system was still closely intertwined with the cooperation, for example, the work of land owned by the recipient without wages then built a patron-client relationship with farm laborers through the use of subscribed and permanent laborers to avoid fraud. Abstract:
How do great powers decide whether to provide arms to or form alliances with client states? This “patron's dilemma” revolves around a decision about how to best provide security to clients without becoming entrapped in unwanted conflicts. Strong commitments worsen the risk of entrapment, whereas weak commitments intensify fears of abandonment. This traditional alliance dilemma can be addressed through the provision of arms and alliances. Great power patrons primarily make such decisions on the basis of two factors: first, the extent to which the patron believes it and its client have common security interests; and second, whether the patron believes that its client has sufficient military capabilities to deter its main adversary without the patron's assistance. Patrons assess the degree of shared threat and the local balances of capabilities in determining whether to support their clients with arms, alliances, or both. As demonstrated in the U.S. provision of security goods to Taiwan and Israel during the Cold War, this strategic logic explains how great powers manage the patron's dilemma.

Abstract:
The background of this study is the hegemony of opinion in the Modopuro duck village and the social isolation of the Sumberglagah leprosy village. This study uses the spiral of silence as the main theory and supports patron-client relationships in rural communities theory. This study took two locations: the Sumberglagah leprosy village in Tangjungkenongo village and the duck village in Modopuro village. This study used a qualitative method focusing on two villages in Mojokerto Regency. This study found the application of the spiral of silence theory applies if public opinion or issues concern villagers' daily lives. Environmental pollution issues in Modopuro and the stigma of the Tanjungkenogo leprosy village are included in the close case category because they are related to the daily life and experiences of the villagers. Another finding is the emergence of patron-client relationships. The position of patrons from business circles with clients in Moduporo villagers is quite strong. Meanwhile, Tanjungkenongo village, which acts as a patron, is a public official for the clients of the villagers, especially the Sumberglagah leprosy village

Abstract:
This article reads the parable of the unjust steward (Luke 16:1–8a) using a social-scientific method, particularly the anthropology of agrarian patron-client relations. Here I delineate a model of the erosion of patron-client bonds, based on the work of James C. Scott and others, and the emergence of horizontal solidarity and mutual aid (“balanced reciprocity”). I relate this model to the peasant’s burden of debt, particularly in Jesus’ world. As commercialization develops in an agrarian society patron-client bonds begin to erode, and peasants begin to understand these bonds as relations of exploitation. Consequently, subversive ideology develops, evident in peasant folktales directed against the wealthy and powerful. Accordingly, I argue that the parable of the unjust steward is a satire aimed at landlord-patrons who perpetuate the burden of debt.

Abstract:
This research discusses the role of the pesantren elite in winning the Abdul Hafidz - Bayu Andrianto candidate pair in the 2015 Rembang District Election. Islamic boarding schools specifically have not been carried out by many researchers. This is because most studies on Islamic boarding schools so far have focused on the kiai as the strongest figure who dominates various cultural, social, economic and political capitals of pesantren. The theory used to look at the practice of the 2015 Rembang local elections where Nyai Muhimmah was staged was James C. Scott's patron-client. He explained that the patron-client relationship can be seen through the pattern of relations that exist between the elite as patrons and the community as clients. By using a qualitative method, namely data collection through in-depth interviews and literature studies, the authors found that Nyai as a female pesantren leader was able to increase the electability of the couple Abdul Hafidz - Bayu Andrianto with absolute victory in all sub-districts even though she ran as a candidate from an independent path. Through her network, namely Islamic boarding schools, organizations and individuals, she succeeded in winning the pair Abdul Hafidz - Bayu Andrianto. Based on this, James Scott's theory has proven to be applicable and relevant to analyzing the patron-client relationship between Nyai and the people in Rembang Regency in the 2015 district election

Strangelove, Michael. "Patron-client dynamics in Flavius Josephus' "Vita": A cross-disciplinary analysis." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/7552.

Full text
Abstract:
Throughout history, Flavius Josephus has been the victim of character assassinations carried out by Jews, Christians and modern scholars alike. This thesis uses the methodology of social scientific analysis to compile a model of patron-client relations from the disciplines of sociology, anthropology, political science, and ancient history. This eclectic model is then applied to Josephus' autobiography, the Vita, in an effort to arrive at a culturally sensitive understanding of the social personality of Josephus as a patron of the Galileans. Patron-client dynamics are uncovered in four groups of relational encounters: (1) Josephus, Poppea Sabina and Aliturus; (2) Josephus and John of Gischala; (3) Josephus and the Galileans; and (4) Josephus and Vespasian, Titus, Domitian and Epaphroditus. The results of this modelling process are contrasted against the results of the dominant historical methodology, with particular attention being given to the conclusions of Shaye J. D. Cohen's Josephus in Galilee and Rome: His Vita and Development as a Historian, (Leiden: Brill, 1979). It is demonstrated that patron-client relations are a significant factor within the Vita and the application of a model of patron-client relations serves to eliminate ethnocentric judgements that have been erroneously applied to both the text and its author.

Abstract:
The foreign policy decisions of small, weak states often go overlooked in the international system. Most understandings of small states emphasize their limited foreign policy choices under the influence of larger, global powers. Yet, there are numerous examples of small states selecting their own foreign policies unencumbered by the international system. This study seeks out those examples and argues that weak states often have the freedom to form their own policies and positions uninfluenced by global powers. To explain the foreign policy decision-making process of small, weak states and explore the relationship between small and large powers, this paper asks when and how do small, weak client states choose to not comply with the demands of large patron states in patron-client relationships? The use of the patron-client framework is a valuable tool for analyzing the foreign policy selection process of small and large states interacting in dyadic relationships. To answer the question, the study examines three separate cases involving patron-client relationships. In each case, the United States serves as the patron state while El Salvador, Pakistan, and Thailand represent the separate client states. The case studies examine moments of client-driven noncompliance to reveal how small states form foreign policy decisions. Ultimately, small states not only wield significant control of their own foreign policy decisions, choosing not to comply with the demands of a stronger patron state, but they also form policy based off diverse considerations—including domestic factors, self-interest, and capacity to comply. Findings suggest that clients in international patron-client relationship have more influence over stronger states than current theories would suggest.

Abstract:
States that experience genocide often have powerful external patrons, but the constraining or enabling role of the patron-client relationship has not been closely examined. When a client state is at high risk of genocide, can its patron state prevent that outcome? What role do patron states play in genocide? My theory explains how patron states can permit or restrain genocide, dependent on their relationship with, and interests in, the client state. The study focuses on the role of the patron’s military assistance and compares four qualitative cases. Two cases resulted in genocide onset: France-Rwanda (1990-1994), and India-Sri Lanka (2007-2009), and these are compared with two cases that did not experience genocide, Russia-Armenia/Nagorno-Karabakh (1991-1994) and India-Nepal (2003-2006). I find that patron actions, broadly determined by geopolitical motivations, significantly influence the likelihood of genocide onset and that this can be observed from variations in patron military assistance and patterns of violence.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary research question of this study is: 'How does the patron-client dynamic between Korean missionaries and Cambodian church planters offer an alternative understanding of aid dependency within the discourse of mission studies?' While the patron-client relationship has been a popular concept in social anthropology studies, its value and effects have not been sufficiently explored within mission studies; specifically the issue of aid dependency particularly between Korean missionaries and Cambodian church planters has not been the subject of focused research. The key effects of patron-client dynamics are explored in this thesis through a case study methodology, examining the Cambodia Bible College (CBC) church-planting projects in Cambodia. Qualitative data was collected primarily through semi-structured interviews and participatory focused group discussions with the CBC founder and CBC church-planting pastors. The macro-function of Microsoft Word-processing was used as the primary data analysis. Once the interview transcriptions, both in English and Korean, were complete, by coding the key terms and key ideas emergent patterns of primary and series of sub-categories were observed. From initial research data, the aid dependency issue - both healthy and unhealthy - was identified as one of the major effects in patron-client dynamics. In the CBC church-planting process, the findings show that the patron takes on three unique diachronic and progressive roles: first, the patron as a father; second, the patron as a sponsor, and third, the patron as a partner. Similarly, a client also takes on three roles: first, the client as a child; second, the client as sponsoree (client), and third, the client as a partner. Although social studies currently express the patron-client dynamics primarily in material and political terms, in the case between the founder and the CBC pastors, intangible relational assets, i.e. 'the patron as a father', were observed. This thesis argues that 'the patron father', plays a significant role in developing CBC pastors as church planters, helps them access the necessary resources to establish their churches at the initial stages, and offers an alternative reading of aid dependency as a relational concept rather than an economic one. Unfortunately, although unintended by both parties, the CBC pastors have become aid-dependent, which is hindering their churches from becoming self-sustaining and which makes an equal partnership in the future difficult, pointing to a conceptual relationship between aid dependency and the patron-client relationship. The future research on aid dependency in the church planting effort, and especially in the context of Gap & Eul, will prove that "partnering" their culturally diverse perspectives can contribute to mission studies for the next generation of transnational workers.

Abstract:
The day-to-day practice of architecture must navigate within a system of contexts often replete with competing values dictated through external forces by clients and patrons to effectively execute the work. This requires the process of design and construction to respond to constant tactile adjustments made by the demands of clients, codes, budgets, etc. to address the landscape of contingency. Every project, decisions are made about quality of materials versus reality of budget and time constraints or owner-prescribed values and requirements versus site and building code constraints. Engaging these conflicts defines the profession of architecture.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper reviews the process of the complete design development, from concept to completion of the largest and most capable fireboats in North America, and among the largest in the world, for the Fire Department of New York (FDNY). The Three Forty-Three is the first of two new fireboats to this design built at Eastern Shipbuilding Inc. of Panama City, Florida and delivered in May 2010. The second vessel is due for completion later in the year. As the result of an international design competition, Robert Allan Ltd. was selected to provide complete engineering and design services for the new boats, from initial concept through detailed engineering design and a comprehensive value engineering process. The scope of services also included the support of FDNY through every stage of major component procurement and the shipbuilding contract award. Robert Allan Ltd.’s shipyard supervisory staff also acted in the capacity of Owner’s Representatives on-site in the shipyard throughout the entire construction process. These major, fast response fireboats were designed to specifically address the fire-fighting and rescue needs of the greater New York harbour, including the New Jersey shore. This includes the capability within the vessel to respond to any CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear) incident. The fireboats are designed for a response speed of 17.4 knots, with a low-wake, 12 knot cruising/patrol speed. The powering, seakeeping, and wake generation characteristics of the semi-displacement hull form were all verified in an extensive model-testing program. The resulting propulsion system is a unique quadruple screw, CPP configuration. The paper focuses on the various initial studies performed to establish the basic design configuration, the model testing and performance verification process, the value engineering studies performed, the many unique design features of the fire-fighting and emergency response capability of these vessels and the performance trials results. Finally, the challenges of managing a major shipbuilding project for a major civic Government Client such as FDNY concludes the paper.

Abstract:
Background and objectiveEvery road traffic accident has the potential to be a traumatic event and may result in significant disruption to the psychological integrity of the people involved. The impact of a road traffic accident can adversely affect the quality of mental and physical health and subsequently interfere with many areas of one's social life. This qualitative study aims to map post-accident psychological care in the Czech Republic in its entirety, from short-term psychological first aid (PPP) at the scene of a traffic accident to long-term psychotherapeutic care. The focus is on identifying weaknesses and strengths in the system of care provided, with an emphasis on describing the connection between each level of care. MethodsData collection was based on semi-structured interviews and focus groups. The survey sample consisted of experts whose practice involves providing some form of psychological care to road accident participants. The study involved 41 interviews with 39 experts and 3 focus groups with a total of 18 experts. The audio and audiovisual recordings were then transcribed and analysed using a thematic analysis method. Results Based on interviews with experts, a shift forward in the overall concern for the psychological state of those involved in traffic accidents was observed in comparison to the past. The Integrated Rescue System plays a significant role in the field of post-accident care. In particular, systematic educational activities are carried out within these units, which increase the motivation and quality of the psychological care provided by the responding emergency units. The establishment of intervention teams within hospital facilities was identified as an essential step in terms of short-term psychological care for physically injured individuals. The limitations of the current approach to short-term care are seen by many experts in the fact that intervention at the scene of a traffic accident is mainly provided to victims of serious traffic accidents who show obvious signs of traumatisation. The assessment of the situation with regard to contacting a crisis interventionist is based on objective criteria of the severity of the traffic accident, which are most often assessed by the police patrol or the intervention commander. In this respect, there is therefore a risk that psychological care will not be available, for example, to those involved in less serious accidents, but who are at a comparable risk of psychological traumatisation. The individuals who caused the accident are also a neglected group. A significant drawback of the current post-accident care system is the availability of follow-up care. The centres are unevenly spread over the country, and in the case of psychological care covered by health insurance companies, clients face long waiting times or financial difficulties in the case of private care. The experts interviewed all concurred that some potential clients are not captured by the aftercare system also because there is a general lack of public education about mental health, the potential impact of a traumatic event, and the options for aftercare. In some regions, post-accident care is tied to a specific individual who promotes or provides it. With their departure from the centre, there is then an insufficient continuation of activities. ConclusionsThe qualitative analysis of the collected data revealed the functional aspects of the current system of post-accident care and at the same time pointed out its shortcomings. The activities of the integrated rescue system providing short-term care directly at the accident scenes were described as highly functional. The limitations of the system are the difficulty in accessing follow-up care, the continuity and insufficient cooperation of the entities providing short-term and long-term care. In the current form of post-accident care, the problem at the most fundamental level is the absence of a systemically based and well communicated concept of post-accident care that would ensure widely accessible care for all those in need. There is no simple and well-connected system in terms of continuity and follow-up care.

Abstract:
A rapidly increasing body of data indicates that the vascular endothelium plays an active role in the development of inflammatory and thrombotic processes. Our laboratory has focused on the modulation of certain endothelial cell functions by inflammatory/immune mediators. Initially, we demonstrated that human monocyte derived interleukin-1 (hmIL-1) can act directly on cultured human endothelial cells (HEC) to increase the expression of tissue factor procoagulant activity in a time- and protein-synthesis dependent fashion (J. Exp. Med. 160:618, 1984). Increased expression of HEC tissue factor was also elicited with recombinant IL-1α (rlL-lα), rIL-1 β, and recombinant human tumor necrosis factor (rTNF), as well as with bacterial endotoxin (1 ipopolysaccharide, LPS) (Am. J. Pathol. 121:393, 1985; Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 83:4533, 1986). The kinetics of the HEC tissue factor responses to these stimuli were similar, demonstrating a rapid use rise to peak activity at ~ 4 hr, and a decline toward basal levels by 24 hr. This characteristic decline in tissue factor PCA after prolonged incubation with IL-1 or TNF was accompanied by selective endothelial hyporesponsiveness to the initially stimulating monokine. Interestingly, the effects of IL-1 and TNF were found to be additive even at apparent maximal doses of the individual monokines. We have also examined the effects of IL-1 and other mediators on HEC production of fibrinolytic components (J. Clin. Invest. 78:587, 1986). HEC monolayers which had been treated for 24 hr with IL-1 or TNF exhibited decreased tissue type plasminogen activator (tPA) and increased plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI) as assessed in functional and immunological assays. Thus, certain inflammatory mediators such as IL-1 and TNF can act on vascular endothelial cells to induce the expression of tissue factor in a rapid and transient fashion, and to decrease the expression of fibrinolytic activity in a more prolonged fashion. In a parallel series of studies, we have demonstrated that IL-1, TNF and LPS also act on HEC to increase the adhesion of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN), monocytes and the related cell lines HL-60 and U937 (J. Clin. Invest. 76:2003, 1985; Fed. Proc. 46:405A, 1987). The kinetics of this modulation of HEC adhesiveness parallel that of the change in tissue factor PCA. Recently, we have developed two monoclonal antibodies (mAb), H4/18 and H18/7, which identify a surface antigen expressed on monokine- and LPS-stimulated HEC but not on unstimulated HEC. The mediator specificity, kinetics, and protein synthesis-dependence of the expression of this antigen correlate with increased HEC adhesiveness for leukocytes. Neither mAb binds to unstimulated or stimulated PMN, HL-60 cells or dermal fibroblasts. H18/7 inhibits the adhesion of PMN (>50%) and HL-60 cells (>60%) to stimulated HEC by comparison to isotype matched control mAb; H4/18 also inhibits HL-60 adhesion but to a lesser extent. H4/18 and H18/7 immunoprecipitate the same polypeptides from biosynthetically-1abeled monokine-stimulated HEC, but not unstimulated HEC. We have designated this inducible endothelial cell surface protein, endothelial-leukocyte adhesion molecule-1 (E-LAM 1). Thus, vascular endothelium can be activated by inflammatory/immune mediators to express both prothrombotic and pro-inflammatory functions. In vivo, these endothelial responses may contribute to a variety of pathophysiologic processes.

Increasing demand for reproductive health services in a Peruvian clinic. Population Council, 1998. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/rh1998.1016.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the past few years, well-established family planning (FP) organizations in developing countries, such as INPPARES, the IPPF affiliate in Peru, have strived to implement the Cairo Agenda. In the process of including reproductive health (RH) in FP care, they have dedicated human resources and infrastructure to provide RH services seldom offered in the past. The problem these organizations now face is to increase use of the newly available RH care. Currently, clients seeking FP services may leave clinics unaware of the other RH care provided. At a time when international donors are phasing out financial assistance, the partially idle infrastructure that these NGOs maintain is a drain of their scant resources. To increase demand for such services, INPPARES developed an interactive pamphlet that asked questions about a client’s health and informed them about the various services at its Patres clinic in Lima, Peru. Results of the post-test-only experiment conducted to evaluate the impact of the folder on client behavior are summarized in this report.
