Abstract:
In the following paper, we look at the Alhambra from a perspective of architectural ceramics, an essential element in the understanding of the monument. From the Nasrid era onward, glazed ceramic tile mosaics were used to adorn the walls, a style that extended into the Christian conquest, when the palace complex was used as a royal residence. Since then, restoration work has continued to be carried out on the alicatados that cover the Alhambra’s walls, especially during an intense period in the 19th century, when it was the subject of much interest from Romantic travellers to Granada. A detailed, documented analysis of this work shows the complexity of the palace and fortress complex, helping us to better understand a part of its history. In the following pages, we specifically focus on one room in the Alhambra, the so-called Cuarto Dorado (Golden Room), outlining the preliminary findings of a research project that we are undertaking in association with the University of Granada and the Patronato de la Alhambra y el Generalife (Council of the Alhambra and the Generalife).

Abstract:
O Patronato da Alhambra e Generalife (PAG) convocou em 2010 uma competição internacional de ideias para administrar o “átrio da Alhambra”. O projeto apresentado na segunda volta pelos arquitetos Álvaro Siza Vieira e Juan Domingo Santos foi o vencedor, mas até hoje, quase oito anos depois, não foi executado. No centro desse impasse está uma controvérsia aberta pela intervenção de organizações civis, patrimonialistas, faculdades profissionais, o próprio PAG e até mesmo o ICOMOS (Conselho Internacional de Monumentos e Locais / UNESCO). O presente trabalho visa historicizar o problema que viria a resolver o átrio, através das diferentes configurações assumidas no Plano Diretor 2007-2020, como as do concurso de 2010, substituindo alguns dos argumentos mais polêmicos que resultam na controvérsia e apresentar uma contribuição de um componente arquitetônico e urbanístico através da hipótese cidade-monumento como um par indissolúvel.

<p>El proyecto que aquí se presenta es fruto de la colaboración establecida entre el Laboratorio DAda Lab (Drawing Architecture DocumentAction Laboratory) de la Universidad de Pavía y el Laboratorio SMlab (Survey and Modelling Lab of Architectural Heritage) de la Universidad de Granada, junto al inestimable apoyo recibido por parte del Patronato de la Alhambra y el Generalife. Numerosos profesores e investigadores han participado en este proyecto multidisciplinar que tomando como referente el Palacio del Generalife, se propuso una reflexión teórica y práctica del levantamiento arquitectónico digital, que ha permitido confrontar los distintos formatos de datos tridimensionales en cuanto a su capacidad para ser interpretados en el proceso de conservación y gestión del patrimonio arquitectónico. Las experiencias obtenidas en los diferentes procesos de levantamiento se completaron con un riguroso análisis histórico de la evolución formal y constructiva del Generalife a partir del cual ha sido posible efectuar la valoración crítica posterior.</p>

Abstract:
<p>William J.R. Curtis (Kent, 1948), es un galardonado historiador de reconocido prestigio internacional y crítico de arquitectura, a la vez que escritor, comisario y fotógrafo. Sus obras escritas son referentes para el estudio de la arquitectura.<br />Aprovechando la visita realizada a Granada con motivo de su exposición “Abstracción y Luz” que tuvo lugar en el Palacio de Carlos V en la Alhambra entre los meses de septiembre y noviembre de 2015, nos pudo mostrar sus diferentes facetas humanistas a través de su obra y su visión de la arquitectura, el paisaje y el mundo.<br />Curtis realizó sus estudios en el Courtauld Institute of Art de la Universidad de Londres y posteriormente en la Universidad de Harvard.<br />Ha impartido docencia en Historia del Arte, Teoría del Diseño y la Arquitectura en universidades de todo el mundo (Europa, Estados Unidos, Latino América, Australia, Asia,…). Universidades como Harvard, Universidad de California, Asociación de Arquitectura de Londres, Universidad de Cambridge, ETSAB Barcelona, son algunas de las instituciones que han tenido el placer de contar con William Curtis como docente.<br />Entre sus muchas obras escritas de historia, crítica y teoría, ha tratado temas muy variados como la arquitectura contemporánea, paisajismo, diseño, historiografía, educación visual, arquitectura vernácula, arquitectura india, arquitectura bereber del pre-Sáhara… Se puede destacar su libro Modern Architecture Since 1900 (Phaidon, tercera edición revisada 1996), que ha sido referente a nivel internacional y traducido en cinco idiomas. Otros de sus libros con gran impactos han sido: Le Corbusier: Ideas and Forms (Phaidon, segunda edición 2015); Denys Lasdun: Architecture, City, Landscape (Phaidon, 1994). Entre sus contribuciones más recientes encontramos: Abstractions in Space: Tadao Ando, Ellsworth Kelly, Richard Serra (Pulitzer Foundation, St. Louis, 2001); Barcelona 1992-2004 (Guim Costa, Gustavo Gili, 2004); y RCR Aranda, Pigem, Vilalta Arquitectes: Entre la abstracción y la naturaleza (Gustavo Gili, Barcelona, 2004).<br />Añadir que ha escrito gran cantidad de monografías sobre arquitectura moderna y contemporánea, así como sobre Le Corbusier. Sus críticas y monografías se pueden encontrar en revistas internacionales de reconocido prestigio entre las que se encuentra, entre otras, El Croquis (Madrid) y Architectural Review (Londres).<br />Mencionar que William Curtis ha sido conferenciante en muchos encuentros y debates críticos en todo el mundo. Ha participado como jurado en competiciones internacionales de diferente índole, así como ha ocupado diferentes puestos honoríficos en numerosas instituciones.<br />Junto con todos estos méritos, hay que mencionar los últimos premios con los que ha sido galardonado: Medal of Foundation for Museum of Finnish Architecture, 50th Anniversary, 2006; y Premio de Oro a la Aportación Global de la Arquitectura (CERA, A+D, India, 2014).<br />Para completar su faceta humanista, William además de escritor de libros y ensayos críticos, realiza pinturas, dibujos y fotografías sobre la abstracción de la naturaleza y su forma de ver el mundo. Entre sus exposiciones se encuentran: Mielen Maisemia/Mental Landscapes (Museo de Arquitectura de Finlandia, Helsinki 2000); Mental Landscapes/Paisajes Mentales (Círculo de Bellas Artes, Madrid 2002); Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts (Harvard 2004); Architectures du Monde. Le regard de William J.R. Curtis (Centre Méridional de l’Architecture et de la Ville en Toulouse, 2004-2005); Structures of Light (Museo Alvar Aalto, Finlandia, 2007).<br />Y por último Abstracción y Luz/Abstraction and Light (Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife, Granada, 2015), gracias a la cual ha sido posible esta entrevista.<br />Rodeado de sus dibujos y pinturas, Williams nos ha contestado a nuestras preguntas, enfatizando en temas como la luz, la sombra, el agua y el espacio. Mientras, sentíamos la fuerza y presencia de estos conceptos en su obra, reforzados por el espacio en el que estaban expuestos, el Palacio de Carlos V en la Alhambra.<br />A través de sus fotografías y dibujos nos muestra su forma de mirar el mundo mediante la abstracción.</p>

The author refers to problems and issues related to the difficulties of conservation, restoration and interpretation of the complex and management of tourist flows. The administration of a complex cultural heritage site such as the Alhambra and the Generalife requires a mandatory multidisciplinary approach, involving specialists from different areas.

Abstract:
Cyanobacteria, green algae and diatoms are significant factors in the biodeterioration of stone cultural heritage sites, and specifically fountain monuments, due to the constant presence of water. In this study, samples were taken from different fountains in the Alhambra and Generalife, which are among the Spanish monuments of greatest historical and artistic value and which together were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984. The aim was to identify which species of colonising microalgae are most frequent and to obtain monoalgal cultures from them. From a conservation point of view, it is interesting to identify which algae are growing in these fountains and how they behave in order to develop new methods to control their growth. The most abundant groups of algae in our samples were green algae and cyanobacteria. The most common genera in the former group were Bracteacoccus, Chlorosarcina, Chlorosarcinopsis, Apatococcus and Klebsormidium. As for cyanobacteria, the most abundant genera were Phormidium, Calothrix, Leptolyngbya, Chamaesiphon, Pleurocapsa and Chlorogloea. Using our collected samples, 10 genera of green algae and 13 genera of cyanobacteria were isolated, thereby constituting the base samples for the creation of a reference collection of living algae from the Alhambra and Generalife contexts, which can be used in subsequent studies to develop new types of treatment against biodeterioration.

Abstract:
Cette recherche contribue à un discours dans l'art, rarement abordé, sur les qualités spatiales et sensibles enclines à surgir de l'emploi architectural des belles écritures. L'étude des palais de l'Alhambra expose une véritable expérience physique où la curiosité des visiteurs s'attise devant une mise en scène graphique qui recouvre programme social et mécanisme de mise à l'épreuve visuelle. Considérant des fonctions méconnues (calliphore, métaphore, formant ou agent), l'expérience esthétique de la belle écriture arabe, sa forme et sa raison d'être sont étudiées au prisme de l'histoire sociale, de la phénoménologie esthétique et du domaine des ambiances. L'approche traditionnelle de la simple utilité textuelle est ainsi reléguée pour inscrire la pratique ornementale de l'écrit au sein d'un réseau de relations entre agents et récepteurs. Le travail élucide un ancrage social ainsi qu'une métaphorisation des compositions graphiques renvoyant à l'héritage matériel et immatériel de l'Islam médiéval. L'analyse formelle de ces signes d'identité culturelle livre une approche artistique inédite de la représentation du réel, qui échappe aux restrictions d'une culture méprisant la figuration, et qui construit un champ d'expérimentation visuelle motivant l'engagement esthétique. Une expérience par laquelle le sujet percevant, arabophone ou non arabophone, saisirait le « Genius loci » relatif à l'onirisme de la résidence princière. L'étude défend ainsi l'existence d'une intentionnalité nasride qui œuvrerait à l'élévation d'une architecture susceptible de « faire histoire ». Un récit dont le sens se renouvelle à travers la perception, où l'épigraphie agirait comme intermédiaire
This research contributes to a rarely broached discourse in the history of art on the spatial and perceptible qualities that stem from the architectural use of calligraphy. The study of the Alhambra palaces describes a real physical experience in which visitors' curiosity is stimulated by the writings' scenography originally conceived as a social program and a tool for visual experimentation. Highlighting underestimated functions, such as metaphor, phenomenological texture or agent, the aesthetic experience of the Arabic epigraphy, its patterns and concepts arc studied in the light of social history, aesthetic phenomenology, and ambiance studies. An emphasis on the place that ornamental practice of writing occupies within a network of relations between agents and perceivers is preferred to the traditional approach centered on a strict textual function. The work argues for a social inscription as well as a metaphorization of the graphic compositions in reference to the material and immaterial heritage of Medieval Islam. The visual analysis of these signs of cultural identity opens a new artistic approach that bypasses the limitations of a culture disadvantaging figurative representation. Nasrid practice creates, rather, a field of visual experience motivating the aesthetic engagement of beholders, Arabs or foreigners: a process, which supports the perception of the residence's "Genius loci ". The study advocates, therefore, the existence of a Nasrid ambition to build a narrative architecture that favors the renewal of key concepts through the visitors' perceptions, by the means of epigraphy's aesthetic mediation
