Abstract:
An extremely wide variety of self-organised nanostructured patterns can be produced by spin-casting solutions of colloidal nanoparticles onto solid substrates. This is an experimental regime that is extremely far from thermodynamic equilibrium, due to the rapidity with which the solvent evaporates. It is the dynamics of flow and evaporation that lead to the formation of the complex structures that are observed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The mechanisms involved in the formation of these patterns are not yet fully understood, largely because it is somewhat challenging to directly observe t

This thesis is concerned with modeling geometric patterns. Specifically, a clear and practical definition for regular patterns is proposed. Based on this definition, this thesis proposes the following modeling setting to describe the semantic transfer of a model between various forms of pattern regularity: (1) recognition or identification of patterns in digital models of 3D assemblies and scenes, (2) pattern regularization, (3) pattern modification and editing by varying the repetition parameters, and (4) establishing exceptions (designed irregularities) in regular patterns. Thiol-passivated colloidal gold nanoparticles possess in addition a self-organising property, which, when the particles are deposited on a substrate, yields a plethora of fascinating patterns. The conditions of formation of these patterns are investigated, in order to understand the principles of - and gain control over - non-equilibrium self-organisation following drop evaporation. In the majority of experiments discussed in this thesis, far-from-equilibrium conditions are attained by a spin-casting process which drives rapid solvent evaporation. Pollinator visitation patterns should affect pollination success and mating patterns in flowering species. This may be beneficial if self-fertilisation results in inbreeding depression. I studied the mating patterns of one rewarding and one deceptive orchid in two closely related gen

Abstract:
This critical review summarizes recent developments in the fabrication of patterned polymer brushes. As top-down lithography reaches the length scale of a single macromolecule, the combination with the bottom-up synthesis of polymer brushes by surface-initiated polymerization becomes one main avenue to design new materials for nanotechnology. Recent developments in surface-initiated polymerizations are highlighted along with diverse strategies to create patterned polymer brushes on all length scales based on irradiation (photo- and interference lithography, electron-beam lithography), mechanic

Late Iron Age and Early Roman Britain has often been homogenised by models that focus on the resistance/assimilation dichotomy during the period of transition. The main objective of this thesis is to examine the rural settlements of this period through the lens of Cultural Theory in order to tease out the more nuanced and diverse human landscape that the material suggests. This approach begins to develop new ways of thinking about the variability observed in rural settlement from the end of the Middle Iron Age (MIA) to the beginning of the 2nd century AD.

<p>Nanofabrication techniques were used to manufacture nanometer scale protein templates. The fabrication approach employs electron beam lithography (EBL) patterning on poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) thiol (CH3O(CH2CH2O)17NHCO(CH2)2SH) self-assembled monolayers (SAM) on Au. The PEG SAM prevented protein surface adhesion and binding sites for protein were created in the SAM by EBL. Subsequent to EBL, the patterns in the PEG SAM were backfilled with 40-nm NeutrAvidin-coated fluorescent spheres (FluoSpheres). The spontaneous and directed immobilization of the spheres from a solution to the patterns

To be successful, no-take zones require continuous monitoring of the fish community to evaluate the response of marine ecosystems to anthropogenic impacts and environmental change.
