The quantitative aspect involved the development of a highly sensitive and reliable RNA-based PCR method which has been used to detect and quantify HIV RNA load directly from patient materials (plasma, serum). Responses of 122 children were obtained on two measures of central auditory processing to establish normative data. Children aged 6.5 through 12.5 years were tested for humming and tapping responses to the Pitch Pattern Sequence Test (PPST) and the two- and four-digit Dichotic Digit Tests (DDT). Children between ages 6.5 and 9.5 years showed progressively better scores on the tapping response of the PPST and on the four-digit DDT. [EN] This work is focused on problems (like automatic speech recognition (ASR) and handwritten text recognition (HTR)) that: 1) can be represented (at least approximately) in terms of one-dimensional sequences, and 2) solving these problems entails breaking the observed sequence down into segments which are associated to units taken from a finite repertoire. The required segmentation and classification tasks are so intrinsically interrelated ("Sayre's Paradox") that they have to be performed jointly.
