Abstract:
This article describes and compares theories of worldview developed by two missiological anthropologists, Charles H. Kraft and Paul G. Hiebert, in order to discover and appreciate deeper levels of culture for contextualization, while maintaining biblical truth for transformation. It suggests that these two approaches may be complementary at the practical and application level, but the theoretical synthesis may not be attainable without critical assessment of the paradigmatic discrepancy between the two.

Abstract:
Abstract Our worldview, the basic assumptions of and for reality, strongly influences our perception of the Gospel. Thirty years ago Paul G. Hiebert wrote about the excluded middle, arguing that his “Western” assumptions of reality prevented him from grasping the spiritual world he faced as a missionary to India. This article, written thirty years later, argues that in parts of Europe there is, rather than an exclusion of the middle, an increasing tendency to exclude the top. That is to say, there is a greater opening for spiritual realities than we saw a few decades ago, but there is also an increased reluctance to accept spiritual absolutes. There is no authority on the top of the hierarchy. A parallel to a religiosity with an excluded top is seen in the immanentist religious culture found in Japan, where God is not easily seen as transcendent from the creation. The article makes use of worldview theory and insights from Japanese culture in its argument for “transcendence descended” – that God is increasingly limited to the immanent sphere.

Abstract:
One of the primary tasks of local theology is to address questions and challenges that are context-specific but not explicitly addressed in the Bible. How can biblical authority be retained while attempting to answer questions, whereby the theologian is compelled to go beyond explicit biblical teaching? Ways of resolving the seeming tension between local theologizing and the normative authority of Scripture are addressed by examining three somewhat novel approaches to conceptualizing the theological process. The first is Paul G. Hiebert’s idea of critical realism and the analogy of maps. The second is Kevin J. Vanhoozer’s idea of theodrama and improvisation. The third is my own concept of game logic and strategy. Each of these three conceptualizations will be briefly described with particular attention to the task of local theologizing and biblical authority.

Abstract:
The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms empowers the Supreme Court to interpret and uphold values entrenched in the Constitution by giving it the responsibility to review legislative and executive actions, and invalidate them in case of non-compliance. While scholars have noted the growing influence of the Court’s judicial power on policy outcomes, its supporters argue that a robust interpretation of rights protects citizens to be treated equally in order to participate in democratic politics; on the other hand, its critics suspect how judicial reviews could avoid interfering with the will of people, which is expressed through elected representatives in other branches of the government. Despite such disagreement, most scholars think the Charter creates new constitutional actors in the form of ethnic minorities, and therefore makes balancing between different interests especially difficult and controversial. My paper picks up on this debate in the scholarly literature to argue that the Court often tends to place a greater emphasis on equality over liberty when interpreting the Charter, and some freedoms cannot be achieved without the government actively promotes them through direct intervention. To develop this argument, I examine how the changes in relationship between Canadian government and minority groups impose challenges in governing the country as a result of the Charter. In particular, I focus on cases involving religious and language minorities to illustrate how the Court attempts to solve the legal puzzle following secular and egalitarian principles. Abstract:
This dissertation examines the relationship between missiology and cultural anthropology in the life and published works of Paul Gordon Hiebert. Chapter 1 introduces the overall research question which investigates the interface of cultural anthropology and missiology. Key terms are introduced and defined in order to provide clarity for the remaining work. Chapter 2 starts the body of the work with a short biography of Hiebert. The biographical section starts before Hiebert's lifetime with an investigation of his denominational and familial background. Hiebert's childhood as missionary kid in India demonstrates how those experiences affected his later education and missionary career. A survey of his education, professional career as a professor of missions and anthropology, and writing career demonstrate Hiebert's commitment to the missions task and to the integration of missiology and cultural anthropology. Chapter 3 identifies and traces the development of Hiebert's six seminal ideas in his published works. Chapter 4 examines how Hiebert's six seminal ideas introduced in the third chapter apply to some questions being dealt with in contemporary missiology. This investigation takes the form of a research question associated with each idea. Chapter 5 investigates the influence of Hiebert's six seminal ideas on current missiology. His influence is demonstrated through a survey of a representative sample of Evangelical missiologists in order to reveal how Hiebert's seminal ideas have been in their own missiological thinking and teaching. Additionally, a limited survey of secondary sources will show that Hiebert has often been cited in order to support various missiological ideas and positions. An evaluation of whether these ideas are legitimate or illegitimate extensions of Hiebert's ideas is given. Chapter 6 concludes the study through a reflection of Hiebert's legacy in terms of his personal impact on students, colleagues, and others with whom he

Abstract:
Summary in German and English
This thesis aims at the integration of the concept of habitus, as introduced by Pierre Bourdieu, with the concept of worldview as defined by Paul G. Hiebert develop implications for the missiological discipline and the analysis of the human condition. In a first step the concept of worldview is introduced and integrated into the anthropological discipline from within the life and work of Paul G. Hiebert. The confinement of the concept within the cognitive realm is worked out subsequently and the necessity of a complimentary concept is underlined. In a second step the concept of habitus as defined by Pierre Bourdieu is introduced and explained within his biography, research tradition and his sociological framework. In the concluding chapter a synthesis is provided to integrate habitus with worldview building upon the complimentary nature of the concepts. The cognitive bias of worldview is amended through the incorporated nature of habitus. This leads to an augmented research methodology which includes practical analysis of habitus.
