Abstract:
The small-sized genus Haroldius Boucomont, 1914 consists of 38 known species widely distributed in the Old World including South Asia, Southeast Asia and West Africa (Pereira 1954; Krikken & Huijbregts 2006; Král & Hájek 2012). Members of this genus are probably saprophagous or mycophagous (Scheuern 1995) and so far were collected by light traps, sifted from leaf litter or soil and captured by flight interception traps (Paulian 1939; Paulian & Scheuern 1994; Krikken & Huijbregts 2006). Some researches suggested that they could have precise ecological relationship with ants. Their myrmecophily habit was indicated mainly by the special morphological characters including smooth body and the characteristically broadened and flattened tibiae (Pereira 1954; Krell & Philips 2010). However, their biology are still rarely reported, and the larvae are still unknown (Pereira 1954; Krikken & Huijbregts 2006).

Abstract:

Smith, Alastair. "The extraordinary in the ordinary: the devil is in the (sometimes unexpected) details of section 34 of the Insolvency Act 24 of 1936 and the actio Pauliana." De Jure 56, no. 1 (2023): 43–65. http://dx.doi.org/10.17159/2225-7160/2023/v56a4.

Abstract:
A recent case offers an opportunity to consider two types of impeachable dispositions in insolvency law. One is the transfer of a trader's business under section 34(1) of the Insolvency Act, and the other is the common-law actio Pauliana from which the entire law of impeachable dispositions derives. In the first place, the nature of the application is characterised as an attempt to reverse the transfer of the business and assets. A common feature of section 34(1) and the actio Pauliana is spotted: they straddle sequestration or winding-up. Compliance with sections 34(1) and (2) of the Insolvency Act is discussed, and the trader's celebration of doing so is then ruined by the pervasive menace of the actio Pauliana, the defence of necessity supplying a sword to cut the Gordian knot. The central insight of the judgment about section 34(1) - the relative meaning of the word "void" - is shown to be well-articulated by a widely followed juristic insight into administrative validity. Some of the finer details of the ambit of the word "void" are then teased out. The uneasy relationship between section 34(1) and sections 26, 29, 30, and 31 of the Insolvency Act and the actio Pauliana is explored, and an answer to a dilemma over the application of section 34(1) ventured. As for applying the requirements of the actio Pauliana to the facts, a comprehensive, nuanced approach considering both the two relevant possibilities is proposed, rather than the single choice plumped for in the judgment apparently because it is the more usual one. The closing remarks underline the wisdom of thoroughly planning, discussing, and creating a Plan B for the client in the pleadings and executing the procedural requirements and administration.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the representation of objects in contemporary Irish women’s poetry through the work of six poets: Eavan Boland, Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin, Paula Meehan, Vona Groarke, Sinéad Morrissey and Doireann Ní Ghríofa. Combining close readings of the poems with a varied theoretical input, at the crossroads of poetics, gender studies, material culture studies and Irish studies, it examines how these poets use objects in their writing, salvaging them from silence, transforming them into vibrant, meaningful presences within their poetry. By doing so, the poets not only construct their own lyrical subjectivities, but also create empathic connections with the non-human world, challenging traditional hierarchies between private and public, material and immaterial, or object and subject.Focusing on human-made objects, this study looks first at the shifting values of poetic objects in relation to space, then at how objects allow the poets to establish links to the past. Finally, the study of liminal objects evidences how objects in poetry can acquire characteristics that are often thought to be the preserve of the subject. This thesis contends that, in the works of the six poets under study, objects tend not to be subsumed into symbols, as they retain features of their material existence. Contrary to symbols, which point to abstract ideas or concepts, they tend to point to experiences. This dissertation highlights the ethical and imaginative potential of writing objects into poetry, contributing to show how material culture studies and new materialism can be applied to the study of poetry

Abstract:
Tese de mestrado, Desenho, Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Belas Artes, 2012
This study aims to address the creative processes involved in an artistic work of graphic nature, while having the act of drawing from observation as the starting point of a creative work. As a goal, this dissertation has as an ambition, to understand the vision of this kind of drawing in contemporary art, being it done in a classical way, or through printmaking. Printmaking has always had a connection with drawing, and it’s a privileged medium for artists who value line in their work and who wish to draw directly from any reference model. Consecutively, we have analyzed its similarities with the language of drawing and the question of reproducibility. The creative processes here referred, use our cognitive capacities during the course of the artistic work. Since the faculties of intuition and understanding are essential to creativity, the current researches in the field of neuroscience allow us to understand the way the artist performs a work of art. These studies will be analyzed and compared with the work of selected artists, active in the second half of the twentieth century, who have developed drawing. These are, on one hand, artists who draw without previous thought and, on the other hand, artists who do previous studies before advancing to the final work. It is intended to study the two approaches and understand the characteristics of both creative processes. One closer to a classic background and another connected to a more contemporary approach. Hence, a practical work was done which had the goal to reproduce both processes, in a modest way, so that we could understand by practical means, the kind of obstacles and advantages we would encounter. To reach a conclusion, the experiments were analyzed and linked with the research

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Desdemona as a character functions as the focus of Chapter 5’s comparative analysis of three Desdemona plays: Ann-Marie MacDonald’s Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet) (1988, Canada); Paula Vogel’s Desdemona: A Play about a Handkerchief (1994); and, most centrally, Toni Morrison’s Desdemona (2011). MacDonald’s and Vogel’s respective plays provide an important site for comparison that exhibits the significance of an intersectional perspective for reinterpreting Othello by considering race alongside gender. These feminist reinterpretations of Othello powerfully reimagine the play’s gender dynamics, yet in ways that manifest white feminism’s marginalization of persons of color. Conversely, Morrison’s Desdemona launches a feminist critique of Othello’s toxic masculinity but avoids antiblackness by taking what Kimberlé Crenshaw terms an intersectional approach, a view examining multiple dimensions of oppression. Desdemona thus posits that recuperating Othello’s broken relationships entails honest reconciliation, one that only occurs when Desdemona confronts her white privilege and complicit subordination of both Barbary and Othello. Desdemona’s uneasy conclusion therefore reveals how feminist appropriations of Othello do not necessitate racial misrepresentation even as it raises questions about audience reach and access.

Abstract:
Abstract The inherited osteolyses or “vanishing bone” syndromes are a group of rare skeletal disorders (Torg and Steel, 1968; Torg et al., 1969; Whyte et al., 1978; Fryns et al., 1980; Hemingway et al., 1983; Hardegger et al., 1985; Petit and Fryns, 1986; Raat et al., 1994; Brennan and Pauli, 2001) distinguished by their differing anatomical distribution, degrees of severity, inheritance pattern, and associated syndromic features (Hardegger et al., 1985; Petit and Fryns, 1986). Multicentric osteolysis with nodulosis and arthropathy [MONA, NAO, or Al Aqeel–Sewairi, syndrome (OMIM 605156)] is an autosomal recessive member of this group notable for the extent of carpal and tarsal osteolysis and interphalangeal joint erosions, facial dysmorphia, and the presence of 2brocollagenous nodules (Al Aqeel et al., 2000). The availability of three large and unrelated families with this syndrome originally permitted a positional cloning approach to identifythecausative gene. Agenome-wide search was performed for regions that were homozygous by descent and the disease gene was localized to 16q12-21. Molecular analysis of the candidate genes within this locus found that all MONA affected patients lacked MMP2 gelatinolytic activity and that this de2ciency was the result of inactivating mutations in the MMP2 gene (Martignetti et al., 2001). Since this original report, a number of additional individuals with vanishing bone disease and MMP2 mutations have been identi2ed, revealing the pan-ethnic nature of the disease. Most recently, novel findings suggest that Winchester syndrome (Zankl et al., 2005; Rouzier et al., 2006) and MONA may be allelic variants representing a spectrum of MMP2 deficiency disorders.

Abstract:
Background: Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease linked to tau protein associated with recurrent brain trauma, clinically marked by mood, personality, cognitive and behavioral changes. Objectives: The objective of the study was to demonstrate whether athletes and military personnel can really be victims of CTE and to elucidate this same pathology. Design and setting: This is a systematic review, based on the PRISMA guidelines and a literature review with a summary of the evidence found. Methods: Articles were selected, published from 1934 to 2020, in PubMed and Scielo using the descriptors: “chronic traumatic encephalopathy”, “cerebral concussion”, “players”, “boxers”, “athletes” and “military”. Inclusion criteria were: studies available in English, Spanish and Portuguese published, with randomized clinical trial, cohort study or meta-analysis. Results: In 52 articles, 14 were selected for qualitative synthesis in the results table that addresses chronic traumatic encephalopathy in football, soccer and rugby players, boxers and the military. Neuropathologically, CTE is characterized by cerebral atrophy, a pelvic septum cavity with fenestrations, dense diffuse immunoreactive inclusions and a TDP-43 proteinopathy. Microscopically, there are extensive neurofibrillary tangles and spindle-shaped and filiform neurites throughout the brain. Conclusions: American football players, boxers and military men are more likely to trigger CTE, due to the constant mechanical shocks from their heads. The most frequent clinical manifestations were: headache, aggression, dementia, executive dysfunction and suicide. CTE is definitely diagnosed only at autopsy.

Abstract:
Introduction: In 1994, Josefowicks used the term neurophobia to designate the fear or aversion towards neurology and neurosciences among the medical students, resulting in: indifference about neurology, less confidence in the care of neurological patients and less interest in the specialty as a medical residency worldwide, with impact in medical education and healthcare. Objectives: Identify the scientific literature produced in Brazil focusing on the study of neurophobia in medical graduation: objectives, population, risk factors and strategies to combat the problem. Methods: This is a literature review that in a first moment researched and collected data from: Scielo, PubMed, BVS and Google Scholar, followed by evaluation, analysis and interpretation of the data collected. Results: Ten articles were selected: 4 cross-sectional; 3 exploratory studies; 1 literature review and 2 expert opinions, published between 2014 and 2021. Half of them sought to diagnose the neurophobia in medical students and in all of these it was positive and prevalent, among public and private institutions located in north, northeast and southeast of the country. The following risk factors stand out: poor articulation between neurosciences and neurology, limited time of practice and need for knowledge of neuroanatomy. Team based learning was the strategy used by two studies, but with limited scenario. For “neurophilia” the opinions of specialist corroborate with other studies: integration between neurosciences and clinical, with an increase in time for practice and a curriculum aimed at generalists. Conclusion: The presence of neurophobia in medical students in Brazil, the risk factors and the proposed strategies converge with those described in the world literature. However, our scientific production is scarce, focuses on detecting the student’s perception and lacks studies with higher levels of evidence, highlighting the importance of expanding scientifically based knowledge about the subject in our country.

"Treatment satisfaction for gene silencing pharmacotherapies for the treatment of hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis with polyneuropathy." In XIII Congresso Paulista de Neurologia. Abstract:
Background and Aims: Hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (hATTR) is a rare, progressive, systemic, fatal condition in which misfolded transthyretin proteins form amyloid in tissues and organs, often manifesting in polyneuropathy (hATTR-PN). The FDA has approved 2 gene-silencing pharmacotherapies for hATTR-PN: inotersen, administered subcutaneously; and patisiran, administered intravenously. Patient satisfaction for each treatment was examined during a period overlapping with the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Patients with hATTR-PN (with and without accompanying cardiomyopathy) in the United States participated in an observational, online survey between January 1 and October 25, 2020. The Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire for Medication, version II (TSQMvII), was administered to 29 patients currently being treated with inotersen (n=11) or patisiran (n=18). TSQMvII produces 4 scale scores—Effectiveness, Side Effects, Convenience, and Global Satisfaction—ranging from 0 to 100. Higher scores indicate greater satisfaction. TSQMvII scores were descriptively compared between treatment groups. Results: Patients receiving inotersen indicated greater satisfaction with convenience than patients receiving patisiran (mean, 76.3 [SD=19.4] vs 58.6 [15.3], respectively), and less dissatisfaction with treatment side effects (86.1 [16.4] vs 68.3 [19.0]). Ratings were comparable between treatments with respect to effectiveness (72.0 [21.5] vs 67.1 [19.7]) and global satisfaction (78.0 [20.0] vs 74.5 [21.7]). Conclusions: While inotersen and patisiran were rated similarly in effectiveness and overall treatment satisfaction, inotersen was associated with less dissatisfaction with side effects and greater convenience, with the latter possibly reflecting differences in mode of administration (ie, at home vs visit to a clinical site), which may be particularly important during a pandemic.

Abstract:
Stroke is the second leading cause of death and the primary cause of disability in Brazil. Ischemia resulting from a stroke triggers an inflammatory response in the central nervous system, primarily mediated by neutrophils, lymphocytes, and macrophages. Recent research suggests that the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in peripheral blood can serve as a reliable marker of systemic inflammation in various diseases. The present study aims to quantify the NLR in patients diagnosed with ischemic stroke, who received treatment at a specialized clinic of a university hospital situated in the central region of São Paulo. Additionally, the study aims to investigate if any correlation exists between NLR values and risk factors associated with ischemic stroke and its severity — assessed using the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS). This retrospective study is based on medical records of patients aged over 18 years, who had ischemic stroke between 2017 and 2022. The collection of clinical data includes information on the type of ischemic stroke and the presence of risk factors. The quantification of NLR is performed by analyzing blood count data from the patients’ medical records. Of the 194 stroke patients whose data were collected, 80.5% had NLR values exceeding 2, a value considered non-physiological by literature and preliminary data obtained from healthy individuals at the same university hospital. It was also observed that patients with a more severe condition, according to the NIHSS scale, had a higher NLR. However, no statistically significant correlation was found between NLR, types of stroke, and the presence of risk factors. In conclusion, stroke patients exhibit a higher neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio, which is associated with the severity of the condition but not with risk factors. NLR can be a prognostic marker of stroke.
