Full textCoastal sediments are characterized by high organic matter contents. Bacteria play a key role in organic matter decomposition and are essential in the nutrient recycling process. Moreover, represent an important food source for meio- and macrofaunal organisms. The present study aimed to evaluate the abundance and biomass of the benthic bacterial community in two bays of the coastal region of Ubatuba (SP). Bacterial abundance and biomass were compared with the distribution and abundance of different organic matter sources (marine, terrestrial and anthropogenic) and with the structure of the benthic community. We collected samples every two months for a period of one year in four stations on each bay along a coast-ocean transect. Tube cores were used to collect sediment samples, which were sliced on board in three layers (0-2, 2-5 and 5-10 cm). Bacterial abundance and biomass were counted and measured under epifluorescence microscopy and bacterial activity was estimated by the frequency of dividing cells. Information on sediment grain size distribution, quality and quantity of organic matter, as well as macro- and meiofauna were available from Project DIAGEN, from which this study is part. Bacterial density and biomass were always higher in Ubatuba bay, which appeared to be related to larger amounts of total organic matter, chlorophyll-a, pheopigments and microbial biomass. The differential deposition pattern observed in both bays was probably important determining the higher values of bacterial biomass and density found in the central and shallow portions of the bays. Despite higher bacterial density and biomass were found during the winter (June 2004) in most stations, this seemed not to be related to total organic matter or chlorophyll-a. Bacterial activity was high in surficial sediments, especially during autumn, with consistently larger values in Fortaleza bay.

Full textSeveral viral emerging and re-emerging diseases have been described in bats. Environmental changes caused by humans associated with the adaptation of bats to urban areas increase the chance of transmission of these infectious diseases to humans and domestic animals. Coronaviruses studies associated with bats have shown that these hosts act as reservoirs for these viruses, while rotaviruses has been poorly studied in these hosts. This study aimed to determine the occurrence of Rotavirus and Coronavirus in several species of bats from São Paulo State, Brazil, and to perform phylogenetic inferences from Coronavirus RdRp and S genes, as well as from Rotavirus structural and non-structural proteins genes. To this end, RT-PCR followed by DNA sequencing was used. Optimization criterion of distance and identities calculation of the nucleotides and amino acids among the obtained sequences and sequences retrieved from the GenBank were used for phylogenetic and molecular diversity analysis. The occurrence of Coronavirus was 2.95% (9/305) and of Rotavirus was 9.18% (28/305). According to phylogenetic analysis of the RdRp gene, eight strains were classified as Alphacoronavirus. The analysis of the CoV S gene showed that the starins of this study formed a single lineage, segregated from other alphacoronaviruses lineages. Regarding Rotavirus, it was possible to identify the genotype G3-P [3] -IX-RX-CX-MX-AX-NX-T3-E3-H6, similar to that reported in bats, horses and humans. In addition, another strain was classified as G20, similar to the genotype described in humans, while the genotypes found for VP4, NSP3 and NSP5 genes may be classified as new genotypes. These results show that bats may carry infectious agents of public health interest, but further studies are necessary to clarify the role of these animals as reservoirs and infectious sources of these viral zoonoses.

Full textThe main objective of this thesis it was to evaluate the use of the sustainability indicator named \"BAF\" (Biotope Area Factor) to mapping urban geotopes present in the drainage basin \"Aguas Espraiada\" (São Paulo-SP-Brazil) in two historical moments, 1958 and 2011. The landscape units studied were classified as geotopes as proposed by Bertrand. Considering this classification we mapped the geotopes, and using BAF we did the analysis of the surface waterproofing coefficients that covers the studied area. Using this methodology it is possible to identify the geotopes incompatible with sustainability and propose clever solutions. This approach can be used as a tool for a better Brazilian urban planning associated with environmental quality.

Full textThe city of São Paulo recorded high rates of homicide during the 1990s and 2000s. This phenomenon was deeply related with the high levels of urban crime in the late 1970s. In general, the violent crime studies emphasize the impact of unequal distribution of rights, the domain of organized crime, and the state\'s inability to enforce the law and maintain the order. However, there is a lack of literature on the violent crimes as result of interpersonal conflict. This master thesis proposes to move from the macro level toward micro level of analysis, and change the focus from homicide studies into interpersonal conflict studies. The data used were criminal records of murders between 1991 and 1997, gathering in 16 police stations located in the North and West areas of São Paulo; it was selected 30 violent crimes committed in bars. This study also examined the legal understanding of banality. In recent years, certain media discourse has increased around \"trivial reasons\" of violent crimes. It was identified that the banal and futile concepts are manipulated in order to qualify acceptable types of sensibilities and social emotions involved in violent crimes. Lastly, it is examined how offenders, victims and witnesses justify the conflicts and the interpersonal violence outcomes. It was identified that the hostilities is consequence of quarrels or public challenges; it means the conflict arises as a way of setting limits and boundaries for the social authorities. As a result, in this scenario interpersonal distrust seems to sustain the use of violence.

Full textThe goal of this study was to describe the biological aspects of Sciaenid species in Santos bay. Samplings were performed monthly, between November/2004 to December/2005. The specific composition; the population structures of ten species, including the age and growth; the reproductive biology of four species and the type of fecundity of Stellifer rastrifer were studied. In the present study 29,306 individuals were caught, belonging to 13 genus and 21 species, with the specie Stellifer rastrifer represented 70.4%, followed by Isopisthus parvipinnis and S. brasiliensis, resulting in 85% of the total Sciaenid composition. The Santos bay is mainly characterized by juveniles, with the recruitment of new individuals to the population occurring in several periods of the year. The reproductive analysis and the histological confirmation of the maturation stages indicated which the four main species studied complete their reproductive cycle in this region. The histological analysis indicated some errors in the identification of the macroscopic ovary stages, i.e., females classified as \"in maturation\" (stage B) were reclassified as \"in reorganization\" after the microscopic analysis. Hydrated females of Isopisthus parvipinnis and Stellifer brasiliensis occurred during the summer months while the hydrated females of Paralonchurus brasiliensis in the winter. The specie Stellifer rastrifer showed the oocytes diameter distribution in continuous pattern, indicating that the species has asynchronous development and indeterminate fecundity.

Full textThe purpose of this research is to characterize the spatio-temporal variability of Lázaro, Domingas Dias and Sununga\"s beaches, in Ubatuba, São Paulo, in relation to oceanographic and meteorological variables, conditional on the passage of frontal systems, to provide the understanding of the morphology evolution of this coastal segment of Fortaleza Bay, and to facilitate future studies on other bays of the northern coast of São Paulo. To characterize the morphodynamics of those beaches, we used the method of beach profile with precision equipment in geographical positioning (DGPS), meteorological and gain-size analyses and coastal modeling system (SMC). The main results collaborated to the conclusion that, although these beaches are inserted in the same cove and have the same geological, meteorological and oceanographic characteristics, they behave differently when compared to the dynamic processes of waves generated in frontal systems, and the \"good weather\" systems, due to the level of exposure of their bows beaches to waves originated from different directions, showing that the intensity of the loss and recovery of these sedimentary beaches not only depend on the degree of protection or exposure of these environments to the more direct action of more slender and more energy waves, but also on the possibility of remobilization of sediments inside the own praial prism.

Full textThis dissertation characterize the morphological and sedimentological evolution of Massaguaçú Bay Beach, São Paulo State, Northeast Brazil, in a Historical and events spatial-temporal scale. Massaguaçú Bay Beach is localized northward of Caraguatatuba Bay and has approximately 7.5Km length. The methodology consisted on the determination of the shoreline changes with Aerophotographic analyses of 1962, 1977, 1994 and 2001, 2006 shoreline was taken with GPS. The DGPS Method was used to obtain 174 two-dimensional profiles and 16 tri-dimensional profiles in 5 field campaigns conducted between November, 2006 and March, 2008. 176 sand samples were collect in the swash zone, next to the last position of each two-dimensional profile. Data showed that almost all beach demonstrated shoreline progradation between 1962 and 1994, this tendency change between 1994 and 2006 with the possibility of increase of the retraction processes. It was observed a great variability in morphological and sedimentological data, this appear to be related with variations on the wave height pattern during the year. It has identified an Erosional Hotspot in the central area of the beach and the beach has divided in five risck areas where the risck increase from the extremities to the center of the beach.

Full textIt is appropriate that municipal environmental policies incorporate not only the instruments provided for in federal legislation, but also the urban-environmental instruments to be inserted in the urban legislation. Thus, it was aimed in this work to develop such an instrument. To do so, it was established the following: a) requirements of the instrument: simplicity, flexibility and theoretical background; b) environmental objectives considered: promotion of ecosystem quality, improvement of microclimate and promotion of drainage control at source; c) development of metrics: a simplification of the concept of eco-exergy due to Jørgensen has been theoretically proven to be satisfactory as a single indicator of the first two environmental objectives; for the last environmental objective, the lot peak output flow; d) establishment of legal standards: for the first two objectives, definition of minimum values of simplified eco-exergy for lots in different locations and with different uses and occupation rates, whereas for the last objective, zero impact. Coincidentally, while this instrument was being developed, the City of São Paulo (Brazil) proceeded to a review of the zoning law, thus being accepted that the above theoretical instrument should serve as the basis for the development of a new instrument called Environmental Quota (Quota Ambiental, QA, in Portuguese). The transformation of the above theoretical instrument into the QA, which ended up being inserted in the bill forwarded to the City Council and later approved by it, was the subject of a sui generis study, as the author participated actively in the development of QA as a public servant. This would require a method halfway between the case study and the participant observation. A method analogous to the phenomenological one was chosen. A small working group in which the author participated was formed for the development of QA. The theoretical instrument received several modifications not only to conform to political guidelines and decisions, but to maturation of concepts and calculations as well, proving feasible as a basis for the development of QA. Several special interest groups influenced the development of QA in different phases and at different levels; it even occurred to interest groups to directly sue the working group. The High Administration supported the process, but it became sometimes divided in relation to the conflict between environmental and social aspects. The group succeeded in enhancing the gains derived from the complementarity of skills resulting from the heterogeneity in terms of training and experience of the working group members. It sought to harmonize the different pressures, often even foreseeing them. To this end, the working group has developed a dynamic to reach internal consensus and to anticipate, internalize and position itself in the face of frequently conflicting pressures. The most severe pressures came from the municipal bureaucracy itself. In all these processes simplicity, as a requirement, was lost. The Environmental Quota proved to be an innovative instrument, appearing to satisfy the demands of various interest groups and, mainly, representing an environmental wedge inserted in the zoning law.

This dissertation has a wider objective to understand the social construction of Brazilian childhood, linking to one of the axis of colective work of Gender, race and age core of studies, which is centered in the enunciation of inequalities of age. The research focused on the treatment given to the theme of education and care of children to the age of 3, in speeches made and broadcasted on radio, by 12 canditates to the city hall of São Paulo on electoral propaganda in 2012. The theorical cut was constituted by the integration of two areas of knowledge: the first concerns the theory of ideology by John B.Thompson (1995), the second, to the Social Studies of Childhood. On methodological field, was used the hermeneutical of depth, proposed by John B.Thompson (1995) and the technique of analises of content developed by Bardin (2011) and Rosemberg (1981). This methodological proposal allowed that the social historical of producton, reproduction and circulation of symbolic ways was defined and to classify kinds of operation of ideology. On electoral propaganda, in a meaningful way, nursery was linked to the needs of infrastructural for the local development. However it was recitifed as a place of service to attend poverty destined to needy population. The concern with the social actor baby, occurred only in the mother testimony, reinforcing gender inequalities. The child was represented or presented in a generical, blurred way and nominated by few terms, that is, dissimulated. The dissimulation glooms assimetrical connections to age and may be interpreted as a strategy of operation of ideology. The family was also mentioned generally, preveting any kind of conclusion about its individual members. And education professionals were subsumed in the teacher category. The corpus analyzed supports and produces the inequalities of age, what allow us to identify as ideological production which does not treat the child as a person of rights, especially the nursery
