Full textParis has an exceptional cultural landscape, in which museums play an important role. This PhD thesis insists that this landscape has never ceased to change and is still changing. As for the museums themselves, far from being institutions opposed to change and to a modern economy, we have shown that they participate in the productive economy, specifically in the symbolic production, and that they manage to adapt to the public demand, to adjust their statutes, to rethink their links with other institutions and so on. Finally, we claim that museum activities are characterized by their similarities with other forms of symbolic consumption, and their spatial proximity with the areas of symbolic consumption

Full textAbstract the landscape, between a commun use, which loads it with social and personal representations, and a scientific practise which treats it like an object submitted to a rigorous analytical treatment, is considered by the didactician as a tool for the training process. Being an object of perception, it is invested with the mental representations, of the subject and that relation object subject informs the master about the cognitive level of the learner. Thus, that level becomes the base for a learning process aiming at a problematized and conceptualized knowledge which is acquired according to a thought process derived from the scientific analysis. *landscape*didactic*representations*geographical analysis

Full textConfrontation of literary texts and geographical items chosen amongst european and american authors having published between 1780 and 1950. These texts deal with notions such as locus, landscape and nature. The mains purpose of this study are : 1) an exam of descriptions where these three notions seem to be associated with precises experiences concerning spatial reality : horizonq, i. E. Objects observed from a determined point at a specific moment in history. We try to define the organisation of spatial relationships between these objects. 2) the geographical approach, where observers try to recognize the spatial elements issued from the major physical constallations - human as well as natural -, is compared with others approaches. The structural qualities observed by geographers are diffenrenciated from those resulting from the analysis of less formalised ans more fragile spatial's unitites that allows to control emotional effects. 3) the critical evaluation of several transformations of the earth's surface resulting from the evolution of technical equipments - especially transports is considered through the modifications of vulnerable and subtle configurations such as landscape and locus

Full textThis thesis aims to analyze the various strategies of religious and secular actors in their process of production of sacred spaces in Beirut, Lebanon. The eighteen Lebanese religious communities present in the country each mark Beirut’s urban landscape with religious symbols and signs that are also very often politically charged. Our assumption is that religious space cannot be limited to just religious buildings; in Beirut, it is expressed by taking over public spaces, transforming easily accessible secular loci into sacred space that imposes rules and specific codes of behaviour. In the city, religious events are expressed through spiritual, cultural, social and architectural venues. Beirut is a marked space with ideological symbols merging politics and religion with both leading to the sacred. The use of religion by the media working for political parties is a common practice for each and every community; thus, each quarter of the city is marked by a particular political ideology that reflects the religious identity of its inhabitants through specific codes and signs. They vary according to their position and time-frame. The religious affiliations of the majority of the inhabitants of a particular region impose religious codes that mark particular public spaces. This geography is rendered more complex by the particular religious calendars observed by each religion. Sacredness begins and ends on specific dates for each religion, producing specific spaces produced, recognized and used differently by the various segments of the city’s population. These would lead to confirm that the city is a cleaved space observable at all scales

From real places to imaginary horizons, from walking to the reading of archives, the landscape is looked upon, glanced at questioned and finally draw. Three approaches (industrial, domestic and local) are to be found in the last two centuries in the norman bocage ; the study each case and micro-scale are given greater importance, so as to save the utmost authenticity of human experiences in the places. The landscape of the bocage appears as the expression of a society and culture giving a greater importance to entrenchment.
In this doctoral thesis of epistemology of geography, I would like to know how French and German geographers in the first half of the XXe century use landscape geography to define and / or to practice geography. In the methodology of histoire croisée developed by Michael Werner, I’m trying to show the knowledge circulation between French and German geographers. In this aim I study the crossing approaches of landscape concept in the semantic, terminological, bibliographical, institutional and thematic fields focusing on the strained relationships, the similarities and links between the landscape geography and the regional geography. The first part deals with the context of the French-German relationships regarding the landscape geography, hence the study of landscape concepts, its translation problem and its semantical evolution as well as its reception in geographical reviews. The second part focuses upon actors and the possible given options in France and Germany through the landscape concept to define geography. The emphasis is put on academic geographers on one hand : Banse, Gradmann, Krebs, Schlüter, Volz and mostly Passarge in Germany, as well as Vidal de la Blache, Vallaux, Maurette, Dion, Clozier and Cholley in France. On the other hand, I emphasize geographers who ensure a knowledge circulation of landscape geography and that I see as « passeurs », « tiers » and « pivots ». At least, the third part analyses two priviledged scenes of the French-German meetings : the landscape session at the International Geographical Congress, and the landscape on the field of geomorphology thanks to international excursions and notebooks

In order to draw up a typology of the geosystems and their evolution for this area, some local systems, with very pronounced geographical characteristics, have been studied in detail. After a close observation of the landscapes, historical research was done to follow their evolution from their estimated origins to today. These sample zones used for the drawing up of a geosystemic typology were chosen in the subbetic mountains, colonized later than the other parts of the region, as well as on the Mediterrenean coast characterized by a subtropical influence and in the plain of Granada or on the slopes of the ranges of the betic cordillera

Full textThe object of thesis is to explain the signifiance of the entry "landscape" in a geographic analysis. The thesis backs up with theories and methodes to describe landscapes and their evolutions by societies. The first chapter describes part of Mont-Saint-Michel in his bay and deciphers landscape theories. Those theories instance reflexion and vindicate landscape entry by relating concept evolution in geography and contributions to others subjects. The second chapter is a visual and exterior approach, and examining researcher. The study land is centred with geographic classical implements. The ground experience is attending with photographic information gathering which are analysed in the second tome. By this analysis, proposed landscape units bound bay and its periphery. The third chapter has an interested in people's activities which lives in those landscape and get them up : farming and selfish cultivations. Urban and rural spatial organisation explain space dynamics. Some societies profit by landscapes conquered on the tidal marshes to create a productif agricultural system. Others intensify oysters producing or build landscape and society by mussel cultivation. By tourism which creates new spaces, the forth chapter describes covetousness of localities and protections of territories by insisting in economic attraction make up by visitors. The bay and its periphery are protected, even if range of protections brings to interrogate to present projects. Relations to landscapes produce visible and invisible limits which demonstrate the hardness of a territorial determination and a coherent development. Sometimes, regarded and lived reality and politic ambitions contradict one another. Results and methodologicals contributions end the thesis by geosystem concept to synthesize and to open prospects

Full textAccording to his own testimony, landscape, ubiquitous in Gracq's work, stands for his loyalty to geography, his original discipline, as well as for his wish to amend the conflictive relationship between man and the environment manifested by the contemporary literature. Thus, tributary in its conception to the founders of French geography at the beginning of the 20th century, Gracq's landscape becomes vector of an onto-ethics bringing about a clash of ideas between his work and his contemporary fellow writers' one. Focusing a limited period in his work, 1938-1960, whose intellectual paradigm takes shape in the light of the notion of "créneau temporal" of the artist, forged by the writer himseIf, this study does not pretend to define Gracq's Iandscape but to question and thus reconstruct the philosophy underlying it. An ontology, presupposing an original "geographicity", and an ethics interpreting the assumption by man of this primarily condition as his responsibility for the Barth as home of the mortals results into an anthropology governed by Antaeus, son of Gaia, mythical hero whose strength vitally depends on his contact with the ground, his mother earth. Dominated by the "human plant", that embodies Gracq's idea of the relationship between man and world, this anthropology also counts among its figures an "errant throughout the world" ("errant par le monde") and a man "entangled with landscape" ("homme entortillé dans le paysage")

Full textThe study, entiled "a geographical and landscape study of a mid-altitude dry mountain area", looks at the ardeche region of the cevennes, in the southern part of the french department of ardeche. The first part of the study deals with the physical and human aspects of the area. An analysis of demographic changes, based on population census figures for the period 1821 to 1990, is used to classify the different communes according to the exent of their population losses. The second part examines current land-use patterns in the region. The agricultural changes which have taken place reveal the fragile nature of the landscape in region, as it becomes increasingly free of human constraints. Thus, as farmers continue to reduce the area under cultivation, the landscape takes on a more uniform appearance, with increasig amounts of woodland and garrigue. The third part looks at landscape changes from the beginning of the 20th century. At the beginning of the 19th century, agriculture occupied a large part of the rural landscape. Its relatively important impact on the landscape can be appreciated from the numerous cultivation terraces still visible today. In the second half of the 19 th century, the farming and rural population began to decline, resulting in the gradual transformation of the landscape of this region; a diachronic study (cadastral documents, aerial photographs) is. .

Full textWhether he wants to describe the earth, find hin bearings on it, or plan his settlement, man must first identify different places within the spatial continum. Standing out against a discontinous scenery, a place acquires a position within an overall structure. What phenomenological process leads to the constitution of the geographical id3entity of a place, and how real can this identity be? This thesis examines the a priori possibility, in the kantian sense, of objective discontinuities that might, at the same time, be the theoretical instrument of geographical knowledge and the practival instrument of political action. We study the fundamental concepts of geography on several levels, for each discourse on the diversity of the earth presupposes a certain idea of what spatial discontinuities are (to be analysed in geometric terms), together with a particular conception of the man-nature relationship and of political action (which have to do with philosophy). We look at vidal's possibilism, location economics and structural geography. The latter distinguishes itself by choosing dynamic abstract forms as object of knowledge, and by avoiding some of the contradictions of the other approaches. It clarifies the notion of geographical space in relation to "catastrophe theory" and proposes an innovative view of political order founded on the structural stability of objective geographical forms. We examine the epistemoligical foundations of G. Ritchot's "urban form theory" by presenting a phenomenology that explains its transcendantal and moral a priori principles. We go on to propose a theory of the geographical scales that allows us to get out of the urban context and to endow the spatial representations used by other social sciences with geographical objectivity. .

Full textThe rapid and dynamique urban growth of the est-asia captures the attention of lots of researchers. In korea, the urban population rate passed, in less than 30 years, from 28% (1960) to 72% (1988) and the number of towns inhabited by more than 50 000 people from 27 to 62. This trend continues in the first half of 1990. Some expect that 90% of the korean population live in the urban area in the year of 2000. The urban concentration is especially importante in seoul metropolitan area, capital of korea. This unprecedented urban growth leads to two fundamental questions. In first, what are the motives and patterns of this spectacular urban expansion, and what is the role and the impact of urban politics ? the second question relates to the urban landscape aspects. What's the spatial order of the cities which have grown so rapidly ? is there any types of urbanity caracterizing the korean cities ? in what extent their urban landscape reflect the society's choice ? these questions are examined in the case study of puch'on, one of seoul metropolitan area which has urdergone radical changes since 1960. In this study, we put in parallel the capital seoul and its suburb puch'on : the microscopic scale analyse of puch'on won't make sense if not completed by the larger scale vision, in that of seoul region. This thesis is composed of two parts. The first part traces back the history of seoul : recent developpement, urban politics and urban production of the last thirty years. The second part concernes the urbanisation of puch'on, especially, the inteference of metropolitan logic in its spatial developpement and the analyse of its urban formes and fabrics

Full textThe prominence of France in the food luxury sector is often presented as a given. But other food luxury cultures have existed and still exist. So why and how has the French culture of food luxury differentiated itself from others by affirming itself and being recognized as a singularity? Behind the seeming evidence, it is important to demonstrate and explain the hypothesis of a French singularity in the matter of food luxury. Today, this singularity is called into question because of its own market extension linked to the industrialization of its production, to the diversification of its distribution channels, to the international reach of its consumption, as well as to the rise of a new competition and the evolution of society. So is it still relevant today to talk about "French food luxury"? Beyond marketing, this raises the challenge of maintaining a creativity, a culture of consumption and a know-how quintessentially French. Today, the patrimonial and touristic valuation of the production sites contributes to the recognition of originality, rarity and excellence of luxury food products. This valuation is also a mean for territorial development

Full textAndré Gide makes landscape as a cardinal datum of his narrative work. The purpose of this three-part thesis is to study the causes, issues and modalities. The representation of the natural environment is a function of a subjective coloration that tends to be maintained or even accentuated, as the author evolves, especially during his passage from symbolism in nature. The experience of the liberation of the "I" coincides with the intensification of a relation to the elements, previously filtered by literary and artistic referentiality.Like the writer, the characters establish an active interaction with the landscape, sometimes to feed an "erotocosmological" relationship. In any case, this attraction for the nature participates a revolution of the subject which is thus a form of rebirth and requalification. The geopoetic approach, as elaborated by Kenneth White at the crossroads of disciplines, makes it possible to better understand of such ontological mutation. Our study, finally mixing the achievements of thematic criticism and the tools of the stylistic approach, sets out to determine the peculiarities of the Gidian description, which plays so willingly on brevity, incompleteness and fragmentation. The frequent use of internal focus, associated with the movement of the character in space, gives the description a dynamic factor and a polysensory character. In these conditions, the description of the landscape, far from being decorative, fulfills, in the narrative, important functions (mimesic, symbolic, proleptic, or even causative). It is always articulated to the temperament and evolution of the character

Looking, scouring, stopping, going and coming back again, positioning oneself, embodying a space until it becomes ordinary, are ail these actions geographical practices that photographers have transformed into art? How can the art of geographical photography be a support to formulate questions, not based on appearances, but on the structural part of spatial processes? The PhD thesis entitled -The photographie Project as a Geographical Experience and Document -consists in two volumes of research and investigation. First, the geographical photography is defined as a process of experiment, observation, and study of the ways of building, managing and inhabiting, in all their different spatialities. This definition relies on the study of institutional commissions, personal works, notably and interviews conducted with photographers and commissioners, some of whom managers. Secondly, a photography and a geography of contemporary Greece were developed jointly. A photographic project was established to examine the use, building practices and the logic of transformation that characterize this country, from North to South. This project has been thought as a way of paying attention, as a technic of making notes and as a way of producing documents that can be analyzed by inhabitants, builders, and actors of local geography

Full textThe thesis has been built arround a meaning of the landscape. The landscape was never a stable reality, it is a transformation marked by the voluntary action of the men of yesterday and today. It is a large open book which reveals the history of human work, arranging, in support of the culture of life, a geography to live there. This major search of the history of the living environment makes it possible to invent the future. Traditionally in France, the territory of life is attached to the "commune", as a soil of practices, of experiments, piece of society, a republican space which interests all the citizens. This symbolic reference recalls that the treatment of the projects on all scales must be necessarily relayed by communities, because the landscape is work of collective intelligence, and its future can be organized only by democratic practice. Established like space, it is the voyage, the meeting carried out in the form of investigation through the areas which constitute the experimental corpus of the work of the thesis. Space makes it possible to represent the landscape and to lead to a useful synthesis to repair it, organize it and transform it. The representation nourishes crossing of multiple references, intuitions and dialogues. The method "quartenaire" developed is that of the comprehension of the project. It presents a value at teaching character. Attached to reality, the real world by confrontation with the ground and to alive by the drawing, ordered glance which opens the doors of imaginary, it leads by comprehension related to the meeting of the others on the expression of a right metaphor. By finding the share of the dream, it nourishes the creation of the expert and involves the adhesion of all. If one whishes to release from the elements founders for a harmonious landscape, it is advisable to affirm a vision of modernity, in courtesy with the site, indifferent to the warlike tendencies of the moment, that of an autonomous genius. Same manner, it is necessary to call upon the creative intuition to tfight the banality afflicting with an installation regulated by technical and legal standards. This request for a found collective intelligence poses the reconstitution of a thought share between the various disciplines, to develop together pedagogy, the council and the capacity to represent the landscape with an authentic participation of the inhabitants

Full textIn Europe, Jean-Jacques Rousseau felt the Alps as a landscape as he depicted the forest as a cradle of the European civilisation. In China, Sie Lingyun showed a similar idea while he experienced an aesthetic cosmos in the forest-mountain. In Korea, three main motivations contributed to the birth of mountain as a landscape : the geographical researches of mountains s an economic source ; the reappearance of mythical mountain to the detriment of the tradition of Buddihist desert ; finally, the pleasure of cosmic and ethic life in the country. Three motivations lead to rediscover the ancient motif of the goddess of pass which symbolizes the mount-matrix. On the pass of the Holly Mother (Sôngmo), Kim Chong-jik felt the mount Chiri as a cradle of the intellectual 'sarim' of Yôngnam. His appreciation marks the true birth of mountain as a landscape. As for the sublime of the mount Kûmgang, it represents the Koreans' aesthetic taste for desert

Full textCritical analysis, innovation and application: these are the three main elements of this work that deals with the study of geosystems and landscapes. The development and description of a new concept and method base for the analysis of the spatial and temporal dynamics of the geosystems and landscapes represents the research object of the first part of the work. Based on a vast bibliography, this work innovates and proposes new ways of approaching the geographical space, in a geo-kinetic and geo-cybernetic perspective. This theoretical approach is systematically followed in the second part of the work, by means of the specific applications for the territory of the Jijia Baseu hilly Plain (or Moldavian Plain). This territory that makes the subject of our research work occupies about 8000 kmø in the northeastern part of Romania and, despite the appearances, it presents a high diversity of the natural components of the geosystem from the point of view of their state, dynamics and spatio-temporal rhythm. Applying both classical research methods as well as the methods developed in this work, we have obtained results which: improve the knowledge on this territory; offer a new perspective on the functional and spatio-temporal dynamics of its components; confirm previous knowledge; allow the establishing of more precise geographical limits. At the same time, the development of the concepts and methods (including the results) presented in this work create new possibilities for further research on he Jijia Baseu hilly Plain and they can be used successfully for the study of other geographical spaces

Second part : out lining the logics of evolution of landscapes from the demographic maximum of the beginning of the nineteenth century. We study : the changes of the agro-sylvo-pastoral system, the evolution of the soil occupation, the recolonization of the forest and the meadows dynamic. Third part : research of visual indicators of landscape evolution and elaboration of constrasting scenarii of socio-economic evolution whose landscape consequences are discussed

Full textIn Christian thoughts and reflections, gardens refer alternately to intimacy with God, to the original sin, to the resurrection and to the Heavenly Jerusalem. They represent a space linking men and life, the living and God. In this dissertation, we will deal with Christian symbols and religious gardens in order to understand the interactions between religious representations and religious practices. The transition from one to the other requires a careful methodological approach to interpret the discourse and gestures that oscillate between the sacred and the profane.Religious gardens develop on two levels, the existential and the spiritual level, which were seen to recombine in all the twenty-seven religious gardens under study. The first type of religious gardens, called here "meditative gardens", is associated with introspective spirituality. They are related to the historically closed cloisters and are associated with herbal gardens, vegetable gardens and orchards. They proceed from an anthropocentric reading of the genesis. The second type of gardens refers to a more Theo-centric tradition, drawing its source from the reading of the psalms and texts from the Franciscan tradition. There, cloisters are open to the world of plants and people, and their gardens are more spontaneous.Today our society has been reinvesting in the gardens of medieval monasteries and "jardins de curé". Very contemporary virtues are found in these gardens, such as attention to well-being, organic food, ecological and sustainable development etc. In the face of our world, marked with irreparable human mistakes, we search for these enclosed gardens as for witnesses of a paradise lost

Full textThe spread of urbanization is not only a matter of soil consumption or of propensity for detached houses. The regional traditions of settlement, the forms of urbanization, the type of localization and the geographical location act on the process and are part of the phenomenon. The small towns of Picardy, for instance, build more or less houses, according to the nearness of Paris. But the local consumption of space is also determined by the socioeconomic features, the types of planning permision petitioner and the use of development plans. The geographical consequences of these ones are important because of their present generalization. But they are inappropriate in the cases of low dynamism and in the rural districts. As a matter of fact, it's the local level of the French development plans which poses a problem for an harmonious spread of urbanization and which hinders a good adaptation of the land supply to the regional demand for housing

Full textSoudano-Sahelian mineral citadel, Mount Mandara are subject to a resumption of erosion that we could correlate in the recurrence of dry years between 1960 and 1991. At the same time mountain societies knew profound turnovers: transformations of the agrarian systems, introduction of commercial cultures, the monetarization of the economy, the influence of the Islam and the cultural model Fulani, acceleration of the mobilities, descent in plain of mountain dwellers. This resumption of erosion must be envisaged in a complex way, according to the holistic conception of the relationship of the men to their environment in farming societies Mandara. Considering that the dynamics of ecosystems are inseparable territorial transformations which liven up the socio-spatial formations Mandara, the analysis of the mountain landscaped models allows to seize collectively all the strengths livening up these spaces. Figures of continuity or fragments of disorder, these strengths harmonize locally according to the ecosystems, the societies and their inheritances. The variety of the human groups in contrasted ecosystems explains the strong nuances in the relationship to the space developed by every group, guiding its landscaped displays. It is in this relationship in the space, indossociably imaterial and material, that live the elements of understanding of the dynamics of the ecosystems and the localized territorial transformations. The transformations of the territorial constructions explain more certainly the resumption of erosion which know mountains and piedmont, within the framework of a climatic crisis which constitutes in the end a usual chance for societies rooted in their territory

Full textEnvironment and societes on the eastern part of the pyrenees is the subject of this research. The study deals in twofold duration from neolithic period to present time : the long term and the recent historical dynamics. The methodology is taking roots into a personal pluridisciplinarity approach which combines palynological studies of long term evolution and analysis of recent developments through a geographic and eco-historical research. The coring sites have not been selected only according to palynological study but according to historical and ecological issues in valleys. Interlocked scales of sites are taken into account through a monographical approach. Comparing and generalizing the results of these monographies permits the testing of regional models. 13 pollen diagrams supported by 32 c14 dates are the framework of this study. Their allow to describe long spelles of fairy slow and homogeneous evolutions interrupted by breaking down of patterns of short, threshold periods: - the early exploitation of the upland by agro-pastoral communities begins in the v millenium b. C. During between early and middle neolithic. - forets clearances, high altitude deforestations and pastoral farming are identified during the iii millenium b. C. In the whole massif where the mains patterns of agro-pastoral land use are settled. - iron age and roman period don't show any great intensification of the human impact on moutain and do not bring environmental upheaval. - the soaring up of deforestation began during the medieval times. During the 7th and 8th century, signs of a significant pastoral an agrarian expansion are evident. Between the 9th and the 13th century the pyrenean landscape seems realy settled and the valleys are subjected to an intense grazing and metallurgical exploitation wich are detrimental to mountain forests. - during the 17th and 18th century, the last stage indicates over exploitation of ressources and maximal deforestation. An historical model for human activities of the eastern part of the pyrenees is described in the conclusion. This model shows how the environmental history of the pyrenean mountains can be periodised for the last six millenium

Full textNot only could Giorgio de Chirico’s deserted squares and faceless dummies have fossilized surrealism into a metaphysics of dreams—as dalinian deserts did— but a part of the history and reception of Surrealism as well, so much so that nature has turned into a blind spot. This study aims to tear Surrealism away from the fictions it first created so as to rethink them into a comprehensive overview that could reveal the contradictions of a movement which might not have given up the nervalian supernaturalism whose spirit it meant to extend. The main issue of this work is to examine the adventure of a rejected notion through to its restoration to favour, by surveying the values and the representations that its changes lead to, in order to show to what extent the conception of the unconscious could paradoxically make the exploration of the outer unknown as essential as that of the inner unknown. After a lexical inquiry, we try to observe the different modes of relationship the subject entertains with nature, before linking them to the constraints of surrealist poetics. Studying the schemas of the metadiscourse makes it easier to perceive the spatialization of interiority and the way the topics of exploration can match in a combination of representations, which derives from natural sciences and gives rise to a material anthropology linked with comparative morphology. The review of surrealist landscapes allows to experience nature from a phenomenological standpoint and to ponder the way such a latent idea in surrealist aesthetic could become manifest in its ethical and epistemological thought
