Abstract:
This paper presents handwriting recognition applications developed and tested on the tablet PC – a new generation of notebook computers. Users write on a tablet PC screen with a tablet pen and a built-in user-independent handwriting recognition tool converts handwritings to printed text. We present handwriting recognition applications using the built-in recognition tool and signature verification using our own verification tool based on fuzzy c-means vector quantization (FCMVQ) and observable Markov modeling (OMM). Experimental results for the signature verification system are also presented.

Abstract:
Tablet PCs are laptop computers that allow the instructor to use a special stylus to write digital ink on the screen which then can be saved to an electronic file. This offers human factors courses several nice features: 1) cleaner, better, more interactive lectures; 2) quicker and more effective student feedback; 3) the ability to save and make available complete lecture materials to students; 4) audio and video integration; 5) more collaborative team work; and 6) eventually, a paper-less classroom. In addition, the tablet PC is a natural start to the development of on-line courses. Student surveys indicated a very high satisfaction with the use of the tablet PC.

In order to obtain road information to process and requiring movement precision for intelligent mobile robots, we propose solution based on data collection and analysis to control motor. First, we introduce the basic method of serial communication on Matlab. Then, we design PC serial communication and test platform with step motor in Matlab environment. Finally, we can control the mobile robots’ motor driver by processing external data with Matlab. The results show that the solution improves the data-process ability of intelligent sweep-robots, greatly simplifies the development process, improves the efficiency of system development, and can be humanized to write and modify mobile robots’ motion path by PC.

Abstract:
We describe a fabrication process of the near-infrared two-dimensional photonic crystal (PC) slab, which is sustained by part of the silica layer underneath the slab and forms a partly air-bridged type. The process involves focused ion beam (FIB) direct write following the selective wet etching of silicon on isolator (SOI) structures. By control the time of dissolving of silica layer in SOI, we successfully fabricated the sample and measured its transmittance spectrum. It is found that the observed spectrum is consistent with the theoretical band structure with FDTD method. For there is partly silica layer remained to support the air-bridge slab, the PC can be fabricated with a large area. If we change the support material under the slab, we might be able to fabricate PC laser with this kind of structure.

Abstract:
Abstract Background To help general practitioners (GPs) in early identification of patients with palliative care (PC) needs, this pilot study aimed to determine the potential of the combined original surprise question (SQ1) (‘Would I be surprised if this patient died within the next 12 months?’) and the second surprise question (SQ2) (‘Would I be surprised if this patient was still alive after 12 months?’). We hypothesized that answering these SQs would trigger them to make a multidimensional care plan. Methods 26 Slovenian GPs, randomized into 4 groups, were invited to write a care plan for each of the four patients described in case vignettes (2 oncologic, 1 organ failure and 1 frailty case). GPs in group 1 were only asked to write a care plan for each patient. GPs in group 2 answered SQ1 and GPs in groups 3 and 4 answered SQ1 and SQ2 before writing the care plan. The type and number of PC aspects mentioned in the respective care plans were quantified into a numeric RADboud ANTicipatory (RADIANT) score. Results Mean RADIANT scores in groups 1-4 were 2.2, 3.6, 2.5 and 3.1, respectively. When comparing the different vignettes, vignette B (terminal oncologic patient) scored best (3.6). Mean RADIANT scores in groups 3 and 4 were slightly higher for GPs who would be surprised compared to GPs who would not be surprised if the patient was still alive in 12 months. Conclusion The combined SQs were considered helpful in the early identification of patients in need of PC in Slovenian general practice.

Abstract:
The need for Palliative Care (PC) continues to grow throughout the world, requiring continuous development, true to its “ethos.” As awareness grows so does the expectation for timely response and policies to potentiate its delivery. The scientific dimension of its philosophy, underpinned by research and scientific practice, looks to explain its nature, origin and concepts, models and theories within which it is delivered. The concept palliation is widely used; yet, it is understudied by academics and clinicians. Interestingly, it is increasingly questioned by society and other specialists, calling for it to “be debated and essentially contested”. Our aim is to contribute to society’s understanding of palliative care so that they can have a clear and truthful awareness of the complex implications of its mission. We approach the different concepts, scientific theories and structures can be achieved by following different pathways, including defining its “ethos”: personality or nature, manifest in the very formulae by which PC places itself before those who need it. What a fascinating topic it is to research and write on!, phenomenological in its base, it shows how different translations of the Anglo-Saxon PC influence its understanding and much needed expansion. Semiotics are at the base of the essence of how palliative care might be assumed and promoted. PC is, for sure, one of the most important, existential spheres to apply our knowledge today and a novel promising methodology to apply the semiotic and phenomenological approaches learning of different aspects of cultural transfer processes.

Abstract:
To meet market demand for the high data density on the disk of a hard disk drive (HDD), reduction of disturbance causing track misregistration is needed. The main disturbance in HDDs in a server or a desktop PC is flow-induced vibrations caused by airflow due to the disk rotation. Generally, there are two kind of flow-induced vibration (FIV) of the structures inside a HDD. One is in-plane or out of plane vibration of the read/write component, i.e., the carriage. Another is out of plane vibration of the disk. In these experiments, we tried to reduce out of plane vibration of the disk and the carriage by making a simple structural change. The investigation is carried out to clear up a cause of FIV of the carriage. The result showed that the outflow from the disk region is strong and can be the cause of the out of plane vibration of both the disk and carriage. To counteract this fluid force, the plates were put against the disks to prevent wind disturbance. As a result, the flow-induced vibrations of the carriage and the disks were significantly reduced. Based on our results, we designed an anti-FIV structure.
