The concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs), and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) were determined in soil samples collected around an industrial park in Northwest China, to investigate the potential impacts of park emissions on the surrounding environment. The total concentration ranges of PCBs, PCNs, and PCDD/Fs in the soil samples were in 13.2–1240, 141–832, and 3.60–156 pg/g, respectively. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and naphthalenes (PCNs) are ubiquitous environmental contaminants with varying degrees of toxicity. There are hundreds of possible congeners with similar chemical characteristics, which make these compounds difficult to isolate in environmental samples. Historically, PCBs and PCNs were identified by using an Aroclor or Halowax mixture instead of the individual compounds, which was impractical because of limited numbers of individual standards. A retention index database was developed with all 209 PCBs and 36 PCNs to help identify these chemicals in environmenta

PCB-11, considered a marker for non-Aroclor contamination of the environment, was found for the first time in the Venetian lagoon and in Europe. An investigation on sources has been conducted, evidencing traffic as the major source of PAHs, whereas PCBs have a similar composition to Aroclor 1248 and 1254; in 2009 a release of PCN-42 has been hypothesized. Subsequently, the prepared PCNs were hot pressed in a vacuum drying oven at a given temperature of 90°C. The morphology and filter efficiency of PCN and PCNM were investigated. Payment-channel networks (PCN) represent the leading solution to scale blockchain-based payments to the performance levels of centralized payment systems. However, current PCNs require nodes to stay permanently online and have enough resources to execute payment security mechanisms. Such assumptions are difficult to guarantee in battery-powered devices with intermittent connectivity patterns, such as mobile phones, smart objects, and sensors. In this thesis, we address the case of PCNs with resource-constrained devices on several fronts. First, we formalize a hybrid PCN model that considers li

Here, we incorporate the results of our new “altered phase theory” (Sikdar et al. 2008a) into design of new polymer clay nanocomposites (PCNs) for bone biomaterials applications. Montmorillonite (MMT) clay was modified using unnatural amino acids as potentially new biocompatible modifiers. The longer carbon chain structures of the unnatural amino acids are expected to enhance non bonded interactions with clay as well as maintaining the usefulness of functional groups of natural amino acids. The specific choice of amino acids is based on both the antibacterial activity reported in literature an

Review question / Objective: To investigate the risk for type 2 diabetes (T2D) in normal weight women with PCOS. The following PECOs (Population, Exposure, Comparator and Outcome) were included: Population: Pre- and postmenopausal women. Exposure: PCOS Comparator: Healthy control or background population. Outcome: T2D. Condition being studied: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder of reproductive-aged women with a prevalence of 15–20%. Review question / Objective: This systematic review aims to evaluate the efficacy of progestin-primed ovarian stimulation (PPOS) on reproductive outcomes in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) undergoing assisted reproductive techniques. Condition being studied: PCOS is a common endocrine disorder that can cause infertility in women of childbearing age. The PPOS protocol, which involves oral progestins with gonadotropin (Gn), has been shown to be effective and safe in treating patients with PCOS. However, the question of whether PPOS provides a significant benefit over conventional

Abstract:
The DoD accounts for over 1% of the country’s total electricity consumption. However, DoD bases heavily rely on vulnerable commercial power grids, susceptible to disruptions from outdated infrastructure, weather-related incidents, and direct attacks. To enhance energy efficiency and resilience, it is imperative to address energy demand in buildings, especially heating and cooling. This study focuses on phase change materials (PCMs) incorporated into concrete to enhance thermal control and reduce energy consumption. Project Completion Reports (PCRs) are the main instrument through which different multilateral organizations measure the success of a project once it closes. PCRs are important for development effectiveness as they serve to understand achievements, failures, and challenges within the project cycle they can feed back into the design and execution of new projects. The aim of this paper is to introduce text analysis tools for the exploration of PCR documents. We describe and apply different text analysis tools to explore the content of a sample of PCRs. We seek to illustrate a way in which PCRs c

We evaluated the precision and accuracy of multilaboratory measurements for determining freely dissolved concentrations (Cfree) of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in sediment porewater using polydimethylsiloxane and low-density polyethylene polymeric samplers. Four laboratories exposed performance reference compound (PRC) preloaded polymers to actively mixed and static ex situ sediment for approximately one month or more. For Cfree results, intralaboratory precision was high for single compounds; most PAHs and PCBs variability was low. Variability w
