Abstract:
Baixa – "Write-off"; 2. Percentual sobre as vendas; 3.
This project aims at evaluating the used models and proposing the adoption of new models, for the Allowance for Doubtful Accounts, with the objective of measuring the risk related to customers financing and loan activities, and the resulting impact in assets measurements. In order to achieve this goal and try not to over exploit the subject, the following steps related to the development of the theme were adopted. In the introduction the theme is explained; the main issue associated to the theme and the challenges the accounting has to face concerning the assets measurements. As for the risk management the general kinds of risks are described, particularly the credit risk and the credit concession models are evaluated. Referring to the Allowance for Doubtful Accounts constitution, most meaningful authors in the field of Accounting and Finance were researched and similar propositions underlined their writings; that can be summarized in 4 allowance models for Doubtful Accounts. 1. Write off; 2. Percentage over the sales; 3. Percentage over receivables; 4. Aging. Then the correlations between the models of insolvency prediction and the credit losses are analyzed where it is possible to verify that the insolvency models are useful for credit concession, though not very much used for estimating probable loss with Doubtful Accounts. The Central Bank of Brazil (Banco Central do Brasil) issued the act number 2682 on the 21st of December, 1999, that urges all financial institutions to change their methodologies of Allowance for Doubtful Accounts. The Central Bank, however, does not indicate the model to be used, leaving the task of developing the models to each institution. Based on the policy of Central Bank and keeping a scientific approach to the constitution of Allowance for Doubtful Accounts, a model for their constitution in the portfolio is proposed. Such model is tested and evaluated not only, according to the rules of Central Bank of Brazil, but also in terms of management orientation. Having this purpose in mind a statistic model was developed, using LOGIT Regression applied to 202 customers of a financial institution where it was possible to come to the conclusion that the use of the model in the constitution of the Allowance for Doubtful Accounts can bring benefits in measuring the real value of investments in Receivables.

Abstract:
This retrospective study examines radiographic findings of plain and contrastenhanced examinations of 38 psittacine birds presenting proventricular abnormalities. The data were obtained by the Image Diagnostic Service of the Veterinary Hospital of the School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science of the University of São Paulo between January 2004 and April 2012. The distribution of the abnormalities, as well as the birds species and ages, were also investigated. The birds sex was not taken into account. The highest percentage among the different orders (44.8%) was observed among specimens of Amazona aestiva (Blue-fronted Parrot), followed by Nymphicus hollandicus (Cockatiel) (28.9%). In the eight-year period of the study, the most common symptoms were \"apathy/weakness\" and \"anorexia/weakness\" (52.63% each.) Proventricular Dilatation Disease (PDD) was the most frequent clinical suspicion (26.32%.) The most commonly observed radiographic abnormality was a \"Proventricular dilatation caused by content of gas and water radiodensity\" (34.21%.) The measurements of the proventriculus were described in 34.84% of all reports. Among the birds studied with radiographic alterations in proventriculus, radiographic examination contrasted by barium sulfate was required in 26.32% of cases. The most common findings were \"retention or slow transit of the contrast agent\". The only cases with a clinical suspicion of PDD for which it was possible to obtain a confirmation were those for which a contrast-enhanced examination was ordered. Some birds also presented radiographic abnormalities of uncertain diagnosis. A proventricular dilatation in itself is not pathognomonic of PDD inasmuch as said disease may present in an atypical manner and several other diseases may cause similar abnormalities.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: At birth every human being is at the starting point of many different journeys: journeys of discovery and change, and journeys of mental and physical growth. Most children follow a similar path of physical and mental growth to adulthood, achieving predetermined milestones at approximately the same age. But what happens to a child who cannot follow this path, a child born without a map? How do the diagnosis and subsequent educational journey of the child affect the parents of that child, parents who find themselves disabled by their experiences of parenthood and life? This study is an autoethnography. It was undertaken to reflect on the physical and emotional journey two parents experienced in finding an educational niche for their son who was diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Delay – Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS), an Autism Spectrum Disorder. In an attempt to engage and involve the non-academic audience, while at the same time addressing the analytical needs of the researcher audience, evocative autoethnographic co-constructed narratives were combined with analytic autoethnography. Not only did I aim to fill in some of the gaps in researcher knowledge about South African parents’ experiences in finding educational support for their children with pervasive developmental delays, but I also wanted to provide knowledge, hope and encouragement to other parents, especially those parents who are at the start of a journey leading to a brighter future for their child with special needs.
Hierdie studie is ‘n outo-etnografie.

Abstract:
Photodynamic Detection (PDD) is a diagnostic technique involving administration of a photosensitizer to the targeted cells that can be stimulated by short wavelength light which then leads to emission of light at a different wavelength (lower energy). The light emitted by the cells can be detected and analysed (by a spectroscope). All cells have the innate ability (due to endogenous fluorophores) to fluoresce, termed autofluorescence. Any cellular, metabolic or structural changes can alter the fluorescence intensity peaks. In this study 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) photosensitizer prodrug was used, which is metabolised in highly active cells to protoporphyrin IX (PpIX). Excitation of a cell at 405nm wavelength (light) leads to emission of autofluorescence at 500nm and PpIX at 635nm. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the use of compact spectroscopy together with the photosensitizer prodrug 5-ALA, in assessing clinically suspicious oral lesions. To that end the followings were assessed: • The fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) or Red/Green ratio at 635/500nm measurements of normal anatomical sites at ten oral anatomical sites to map and create baseline readings for normal oral mucosal site fluorescence. • The effect of participants’ characteristics on the normal oral mucosal site FIR measurements. • The use the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) measurements to determine any differences between the lesion and the normal oral readings and whether the FIR from clinically suspicious oral lesions is associated with the histopathology grade. In addition to the sensitivity and specificity of the technique in assessing clinically suspicious (premalignant) oral lesions for potential malignant change.Prior to the trial commencing, approval were obtained from the Research Ethics Committee (REC), local NHS Research and Development (R&D), and Medicine Healthcare product Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and the University of Dundee Research Innovation Services (RIS). A total of thirty five participants with clinically suspicious oral lesions were recruited in Dundee (Dundee Dental Hospital) and Glasgow (Southern General Hospital). A Photodynamic Detection method using compact fluorescence spectroscopy and 5-ALA mouth rinse was applied. FIR measurements from ten normal anatomical sites were obtained in every patient to study the variation at different normal oral sites and the effect of the participant’s characteristics on these readings. In addition, two FIR measurements were obtained from each lesion and a further one taken from normal looking mucosa well beyond the lesion boundary (i.e. more than 5mm away) prior to biopsy. The readings were compared to study the reliability, reproducibility and efficacy of the photodynamic method in detecting mucosal abnormality. A total of 292 spectral readings obtained from normal mucosa were used to study the FIR measurements at normal oral anatomical sites. The results showed that the oral regions could be grouped into two broad categories with similar readings, the palatal and tongue readings in one group and buccal, ventral tongue, floor of the mouth, gingiva and lip mucosa on the other (essentially keratinized and non keratinized groups). The same set of readings were further analysed to study the effect of individual characteristics (age, gender, presence of oral prosthesis, metabolic diseases, smoking and alcohol consumptions) on the FIR measurements. There was no significant difference between FIR measurements within each of the groups studied, although at times sample sizes were very small.A total of 134 spectral readings obtained from 47 lesions that were biopsied from 35 patients recruited to the trial were used for the next part of the study. There were 91 spectra obtained from the lesions and 43 spectra obtained from the normal sites (more than 5mm away from the borders of the lesion) for comparison. There was a significant difference between the lesion and normal site readings. The FIR readings for the dysplastic lesions were significantly different when compared with the normal and benign hyperkeratoses. However there was no significant difference between dysplastic and inflammatory lesions (lichen planus, lichenoid lesions and candidal leukoplakia) on the one hand and inflammatory lesions and hyperkeratotic lesion on the other. Further analysis showed the sensitivity in detecting all the clinically suspicious oral lesions from the normal sites was 59.5% and specificity was 73.8%. The sensitivity in detecting dysplasia from normal sites was 100% and specificity 100%.Photodynamic Detection was able to detect a difference between the oral lesions from normal mucosa (but so is the naked eye!). However there was variation in the sensitivity and specificity in detecting a range of different pathological conditions. The technique was highly sensitive in detecting dysplasia from normal mucosa but unfortunately the technique is not able to discriminate reliably between dysplasia and inflammatory lesions whose clinical appearance can be very similar. In conclusion, the photodynamic detection method used in this study would not appear to offer a reliable screening tool for the early detection of oral dysplasia/cancer. The need to consider adjunctive tests that discriminate inflammation from dysplasia is required. Abstract:
Expanding interests may be a behavioral cusp, resulting in widespread changes across skills, and therefore is particularly relevant in intervention programs for children with autism. Little research has addressed directly increasing the diversity of activities and interests for this population. This study describes a program developed to increase activities and interests in a girl dually-diagnosed with pervasive developmental disorder (PDD-NOS) and Downs syndrome (DS). A multiple-baseline design across stimuli was employed to evaluate the program. The results show that the program increased number of total and different toy interactions. No effects were observed for overall duration of toy interactions. Results are discussed in relation to play skill instruction and preference assessment literature, the cusp, and autism intervention programs.

Abstract:
The accuracy and precision required in new radiation techniques is quite high, as is the case of Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT). Thus, the size of the dosimeters to be used in experimental measurements is critical. Moreover, the absence of lateral electronic equilibrium and the existence of intense dose gradients in the field present a challenge in determining the dose in the tumor. Some of the dosimeter used nowadays do not have spatial resolution or sensitivity consistent with the requirements of clinical dosimetry in these radiation techniques. The Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) dosimetry using the amino acid L-alanine as a dosimeter is a widely accepted method of dosimetric measurements of high-dose radiation. The goal of this thesis was to deepen the development of EPR dosimetry as a competitive method for applications in radiotherapy, fulfilling the requirements of precision and accuracy and compare measurements performed with L-alanine / EPR minidosimeters with other techniques and algorithms investigated. The new methodology of minidosimeters with 95% L-alanine and 5% polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), of 1 mm in diameter and 3 mm in height and with a mass 3.5 mg to 4.0 mg, was used for measurements of percentage depth dose (PDD) and field profiles in phantoms (inhomogeneous phantoms) irradiated with radiotherapy technique. The inhomogeneous phantoms were constructed with materials that simulate the soft tissue, lung, bone and other structures of the human body such as titanium, which is used in prostheses. The phantoms were irradiated with photons of 6 MeV maximum energy from a Siemens Primus linear accelerator with a dose of approximately 20 Gy. The results obtained experimentally with the L-alanine minidosimeters were compared with other procedures and techniques already validated such as, for example, film, treatment planning system (TPS) and Monte Carlo simulation with the code PENELOPE-2008, which allowed data comparison with the treatment planning system and an analysis of doses in the interface of different materials equivalent to the tissues. The curves of percentage depth dose (PDP) simulated with PENELOPE were validated with data from the Sector of Radiotherapy of HCFMRP-USP and were used as a dosimetric standard in this study. The lowest difference between simulated and experimental doses was 0.12% and the higher was 7.2%. The material with larger absorption was the Titanium with an attenuation factor of 40.43%. The present results demonstrate that the dosimetric system using EPR minidosimeters with 95% L-alanine and 5% PVA has a great potential in determining the dose from small fields new techniques in radiotherapy.

Abstract:
Quantifying the contribution of glaciers to water resources is particularly important in locations where glaciers may provide a large percentage of total river discharge. In some remote locations, direct field measurements of melt rates are difficult to acquire, so alternate approaches are needed. Positive degree-day modeling (PDD) of glacier melt is a valuable tool to making first order approximations of the volume of melt coming from glaciers. In this study, a PDD-melt model is applied to glaciers in the Indus River watershed located in Afghanistan, China, India, and Pakistan. Here, millions of people rely on the water from the Indus River, which previous work suggests may be heavily dependent on glacier melt from high mountain regions in the northern part of the watershed. In this region, the PDD melt model calculates the range of melt volumes from more than 45,000 km2 of glaciated area. It relies on a limited suite of input variables for glaciers in the region: elevation, temperature, temperature lapse rate, melt factor, and surface area. Three global gridded climate datasets were used to determine the bounds of temperature at each glacier: UEA CRU CL 2.0, UEA CRU TS 2.1, and NCEP/NCAR 40 year reanalysis. The PDD melt model was run using four different melt scenarios: mean, minimum, maximum, and randomized. These scenarios account for differences in melt volume not captured by temperature, and take uncertainties in all input parameters into account to bound the possible melt volume. The spread in total melt volume from the model scenarios ranges between 27 km3 and 439 km3. While the difference in these calculations is large, it is highly likely the real value falls within this range. Importantly, even the smallest model volume output is a significant melt water value. This suggests that even when forcing the absolute smallest volume of melt, the glacier contribution to the Indus watershed is significant. In addition to providing information about melt volume, this model helps to highlight glaciers with the greatest contribution to total melt. Despite differences in the individual climate models, the spatial pattern in glacier melt is similar, with glaciers contributing the majority of total melt volume occurring in similar geographic regions regardless of which temperature dataset is used. For regions where glacier areas are reasonably well-constrained, contributions from individual glaciers can be quantified. Importantly, less than 5% of glaciers contribute at least 70% of the total melt volume in the watershed. The majority of these glaciers are in Pakistan, the region with the largest percentage of known glaciers with large surface areas at lower elevations. In addition to calculating current melt volumes over large glaciated areas, this model can also be used to determine future melt rates under differing climate scenarios. By applying suggested future regional temperature change to the temperature data, the impact on average melt rate over the watershed was found to increase from 3.02 m/year to 4.69 m/year with up to 2 °C temperature increase. Assuming glacier area remains relatively constant over short time periods, this would amount to a 145 km3 increase in melt volume.

Abstract:

During the breeding season Zebra finch, Taeniopygia guttata, females develops a brood patch on the ventral surface which facilitates heat exchange between the incubating bird and the egg. The brood patch has to be sensitive to changes in temperature, so that the eggs can be kept at an optimal temperature for embryo development. If the egg temperature drops it has to be re-warmed. Mild cooling of the brood patch has been shown to cause cold induced vasodilation, but the responsible mechanism for this is not known. In this study we investigated if known thermoreceptors, TRPV3 and TRPV4, could be involved in the alteration of blood flow. To activate TRPV3 and TRPV4 two agonists, carvacrol and 4α-PDD respectively, were applied on the brood patch. Changes in skin temperature and vascularity were then examined. The results obtained did not reveal any changes in the vascularity. Temperature changes in the skin that could be caused by an alteration in blood flow did not significantly change either. Still, a role of these channels in the brood patch cannot be excluded.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT - PROVENTRICULAR DILATATION DISEASE: A BORNAVIROSIS - Proventricular dilatation disease (PDD) was first described in the 1970’s in the USA and was also reported in Europe. Is a fatal disorder identified in over 50 different domesticated and wild birds species worldwide. The disease is characterized by lymphoplasmocytic infiltration of the ganglia of the central and peripheral nervous system, leading to central nervous system disorders and/or enteric motility disfunction. The epidemiology of the disease, along with the fact that an unknown virus with an envelope was frequently observed in affected tissues and/or feces of diseased birds, suggests a viral etiology. Recently Avian Bornavirus, representing a new genus within the family Bornaviridae, was related with PDD positive psittacine birds. This study reports twelve cases seen in Catalunya, Spain. Clinical signs, complementary diagnosis exams results, necropsy and histopathological findings are described. We found it very dificult to achive the final diagnosis in alive birds and at post-mortem, only one animal was diagnosed with PDD before dying and four after necropsy. However, the remaining seven cases showed compatible signs as well as temporal and geografic relation with the positive birds. Therefore it is important to develop new diagnostic methods based on molecular biological detection of Bornavirus, as well as serological tests as viable alternatives to invasive and postmortem histopathological diagnosis. Future studies on the epidemiology of PDD must be implemented in Portugal, combining efforts of private veterinarians, owners, scientifical community and Government authorities to evaluate the possible devastating impact on aviculture and on the Portuguese wild avifauna.

Abstract:
In vitro protein kinase C (PKC) activation releases inflammatory mediators and activates or sensitizes nociceptors. In vivo studies have demonstrated that PKC activation induces inflammation and is associated with the peripheral and spinal processing of the nociceptive response. However, a full characterization of the nociceptive response and edema induced by intraplantar (i.pl.) injection of a PKC activator has not been carried out. The present study aimed to characterize the mechanical allodynia and edema induced by i.pl. injection of a PKC activator in rats, to evaluate the role of different mediators (eicosanoids, 5-HT, histamine and NO) in the development of these responses and to compare the results with those induced by carrageenan. I.pl. injection of phorbol-12,13-didecanoate (PDD: 0.01 or 0.1 g), a PKC activator, or carrageenan (50 or 500 g), but not 4-PDD, an inactive analogue, induced mechanical allodynia and edema. The mechanical allodynia induced by PDD was partially inhibited by intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of indomethacin (2 or 4 mg/Kg), L-NAME (100 mg/Kg) and the association indomethacin + L-NAME, but not dexamethasone (0.25 or 1 mg/Kg), rofecoxib (5 or 10 mg/Kg), methysergide (2 or 4 mg/Kg), promethazine (5 or 10 mg/Kg) or morphine (5 or 10 mg/Kg). The mechanical allodynia induced by carrageenan was inhibited by i.p. injection of indomethacin (2 or 4 mg/kg), rofecoxib (5 or 10 mg/Kg), L-NAME (100 mg/Kg), methysergide (4 mg/Kg) or morphine (5 or 10 mg/Kg). The edema induced by PDD was inhibited by i.p. injection of dexamethasone (0.25 or 1 mg/Kg), L-NAME (50 or 100 mg/Kg), methysergide (2 or 4 mg/Kg), promethazine (5 or 10 mg/Kg) or ketotifen (4 mg/Kg), but not indomethacin (2 or 4 mg/Kg). The edema induced by carrageenan was inhibited by the i.p. injection of dexamethasone (0.25 or 1 mg/Kg), indomethacin (2 or 4 mg/Kg), rofecoxib (5 or 10 mg/Kg), L-NAME (50 or 100 mg/Kg), methysergide (2 or 4 mg/Kg), but not promethazine (5 or 10 mg/Kg). Finally, i.pl. injection of indomethacin (50 or 100 g) or L-NAME (50 or 100 g) did not inhibit the mechanical allodynia induced by PDD. In conclusion, i.pl. injection of a PKC activator induces mechanical allodynia and edema, responses that probably result from the action of different mediators. In addition, these responses differ from those induced by carrageenan, since the drugs used affected differentially the responses induced by the two inflammatory stimuli.

Abstract:
The thesis is aimed at understanding of molecular mechanisms of autophagic degradation of peroxisomes (pexophagy) in the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica. This microorganism has been extensively used to explore peroxisome biogenesis (Titorenko and Rachubinski, 2000). Gunkel et al. (1999) intoduced Y. lypolitica into pexophagy studies. However, the field of pexophagic research on this yeast remains quite unexplored. This work involved following tasks: (1) the development and optimization of Y. lipolytica as a model system to study peroxisome degradation; (2) Y. lipolytica genes and proteins implicated in pexophagy should be found and characterized; (3) a proper easy-to-handle selection procedure to isolate novel peroxisome degradation-deficient(pdd) mutants of Y. lipolytica should be devised.

The purpose of this work is to observe the potential effects of new treatment in children with Pervasive Developmental Disorders. For this, we compared two groups of children with PDD, one being treated the other constituting a control group, across domains of cognition, sensory and behaviors of daily life and socialization. We collected different tools for our methodology: parental questionnaires, psychometric assessments and psychophysical assessments. We also used a comparative approach for the sensory domain integrating a typical child development group. The results of this work highlight that whole of the evaluated behaviors did not appear altered in our population of children with PDD. We pointed out increased improvements in treated children regarding their visuospatial abilities. We also found that these children had improvements in some verbal processes. We confirmed the presence of particular patterns of sensory behavior in children with PDD compared to the typically developed population. However, we did not show any difference in evolution of these sensory alterations between our two groups of children with PDD. Finally, repeated and restricted behaviors appeared to be more alleviated in treated PDD children than control PDD children but we did not confirm the improvements in social behaviors reported by previous studies. This study has brought results that need to be scrutinized in more detail, on a larger scale

Abstract:
Because of the limited efficacy and the toxicity of conventional therapies to fight cancer, researchers focused on the new trategies. These efforts lead to the emergence of immunotherapies, whose msot recent actors are the monoclonal antibodies targeting immune checkpoint (ICP). Among those ICP inhibitors, we found antibodies targeting the surface protein « Programmed Cell Death 1 », called anti- PD1, and those targeting its ligand, « Programmed Cell Death Ligand 1 », called anti- PDL-1. Those antibodies shown a great efficacy in a wide diveristy of cancers, and are currently used for clinical practice in the case of melanoma, lung cancer, bladder cancer and renal cell carcinoma. However, those treatments don’t benefit to all tumor bearing patients, with a mean of 60% of innate resistance, and 25% of acquired resistance following a primary response, variable according to tumor type. Phenomena involved in resistance are currently poorly described. In this context, the aim of my project was to establish in vivo preclinical models of acquired resistance to anti-PD1 and anti-PDL-1. To do that, we used syngeneic renal cancer (RENCA), bladder cancer (MB49 and MBT-2), and colorectal cancer (MC38), and immunocompetent mice, that we have made resistant by serial reimplantations of tumors pieces and serial treatments, inducing a selection pressure until we obtained a resistant phenotype. The efficiency of PD1/PDL-1 axis blocking is strongly linked to the microenvironment composition, as a result we realized an immunophenotyping protocol. We observed anti-tumor cells as T cells, Natural Killer cells, and M1 macrophages, but also cells harboring immunosuppressive functions, as M2 macrophages, MDSC, and Treg. Moreover, some studies have identified an upregulation of alternatives ICP in the context of acquired resistance to anti-PD1, so we also observed the expression of LAG3, TIM3 and TIGIT besides PD1 and PDL-1 expression. We shown that resistance is strongly dependant to the tumor model, even if we identified a decrease of anti-tumor M1 macrophages is models resistant to anti-PD1, and an increase of Treg in models resistant to anti-PDL-1, suggesting a common mechanism of resistance specific to respectively anti PD1 and anti-PDL-1. Following Zaretsky and al. identification of genes involved in interferon pathway in the case of acquired resistance to anti-PD1 in melanoma, we decided to study the molecular profile of resistant tumors. We identified 5 common genes differently modulated between anti-PD1 and anti-PDL-1 resistant models, including SERPINF1 and FCNA which seems to be promising as targets to validate. Lastly, in parallel to establishment and characterization of preclinical models of acquired resistance, we tested new therapeutical approches of anti-PD1 and anti- PDL-1 potentiation in combination with reference chemotherapies. We shown a synergy in wild-type colorectal and bladder cancers (MC38 and MB49), no effect of the combination in metastatic breast cancer 4T1, and an inhibition of anti-PDL 1 effect in bladder cancer MBT-2. Immunphenotyping of tumors allowed us to observe here also high differences between tumor models, both at baseline and after treatments initiation. To conclude, even if our results need a validation with patients samples, we demonstrated that different cellular and molecular modifications could be involved in resistance to anti-PD1 and anti-PDL-1, and that resistance could be bypass with chemotherapy combination, according to tumor type

Abstract:
Public policies about special education, the different teaching techniques and the offerings of teacher’s training, hardly address the subject of alterity. Training courses focused in re-education, in diagnostics and already-made orientations about what and how-to do, do not take into account the impasses that come from an encounter with a student read as uncanny; from the paralyzation of the teacher upon the presence of an individual that seems not to learn, not to associate with other, not to be. How does the teacher embrace the student’s alterity? Hard work is necessary in this matter. In this research, we propose ourselves to think this duty as a journey able to reposition the teacher by means of words upon her student with Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD). For that end, we will take as empirical field a continued teacher training (I and II stages) between 2012 and 2013, in the city of Porto Alegre, located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. In such training, the teachers were invited to read what they lived and turn that into experience through writing, while being accompanied by a reader, through annotations and comments on a side of what was written. The texts that set up this research deal with the (dis)encounters among three teachers that participated in the training, related with the inclusion of students with PDD in the school. This is an exploratory study with a methodology that contemplates the essay as form. The argumentative tissue is built considering the film called Spirited Away, the Freudian concept of the uncanny and the concept of reading proposed by Barthes. As results we can note: the narrative construction, about a student that initially produces silence and discomfort, allows important disruptions in the declarative position and in the pedagogic practice of the teachers; the potential of the alterity as something that has to be considered in teacher training, policies, and the implementation of inclusive processes; in the collaborative work that considers embracing the student and the teacher, as well, in her fears and uncertainty.

Thompson, Kenneth Parker. "A Political History of U.S. Commercial Remote Sensing, 1984-2007: Conflict, Collaboration, and the Role of Knowledge in the High-Tech World of Earth Observation Satellites." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/30235.

Full text
Abstract:
The political history of U.S. commercial remote sensing began in 1984 when the U.S. government first attempted to commercialize its civil earth observation satellite system " Landsat. Since then, the high technology of earth imaging satellite systems has generated intense debates and policy conflicts, primarily centered on U.S. government concerns over the national security and foreign policy implications of high-resolution commercial satellite systems. Conversely, proponents of commercial observation satellites have urged U.S. policymakers to recognize the scientific and socio-economic utility of commercial remote sensing and thus craft and implement regulatory regimes that allow for a greater degree of information openness and transparency in using earth observation satellite imagery. This dissertation traces and analyzes that tumultuous political history and examines the policy issues and social construction of commercial remote sensing to determine the role of knowledge in the effective crafting and execution of commercial remote sensing laws and policies. Although individual and organizational perspectives, interests, missions, and cultures play a significant role in the social construction of commercial observation satellite systems and programs, the problem of insufficient knowledge of the myriad dimensions and complex nature of commercial remote sensing is a little studied but important component of this social construction process. Knowledge gaps concerning commercial remote sensing extend to various dimensions of the subject matter, such as the global, economic, technical, and legal/policy aspects. Numerous examples of knowledge voids are examined to suggest a connection between deficient knowledge and divergent policy perceptions as they relate to commercial remote sensing. Relevant knowledge voids are then structurally categorized to demonstrate the vastness and complexity of commercial remote sensing policy issues and to offer recommendations on how to fill such knowledge gaps to effect increased collaboration between the US government and the U.S. commercial remote sensing industry. Finally, the dissertation offers suggestions for future STS studies on policy issues, particularly those that focus on the global dimensions of commercial remote sensing or on applying the knowledge gap concept advanced by this dissertation to other areas of science and technology policymaking.

Abstract:

Abstract:
To keep up in the rapidly changing market for smart mobile phones, newways of consuming information is needed. In this master thesis project aPortable Document Format (PDF) viewer with more features than existingPDF viewers for Symbian^3 was developed, called PDF Eagle. PDF Eaglewas implemented using the Qt framework, allowing it to be easily ported todierent platforms. PDF documents have a rich structure and to be fullycompatible with the standard and at the same time responsive enough to berun on a mobile platform is a formidable technical challenge. This reportdescribes the issues that had to be resolved all the way to a functioning "app"that was marketed on the Nokia market in October 2011 with a great success.Among the technical challenges was a way to correctly render coloured objectsin PDFs. A gradient is a way to colour an area in a PDF le. Results of testsshowed that PDF Eagle is more capable of handling gradients, shadows andencrypted PDF les compared to other mobile PDF viewers. The conclusion ofthis report is that PDF Eagle is on par with or outmatches other PDF viewerson the targeted platform. This work also shows the feasibility of incrementallydownloading the pages of a PDF le which provides a better user experienceby faster viewing.

Abstract:
Facial emotionanl expression recognition in Pervasive Developpemental Disorders (PDD) are atypic and contribute to social skills difficulties for children and adolescents with PDD, including without intellectual disabilities. Hypothesis: predictiv factors exist in facial emotional expression recognition in PDD. Objectives: 1) characterize the abilities of facial emotional expressions recognition of 32 children and adolescents; 2) identify risk or protective factors in the development of these abilities. Compare our results with a control group of 37 typical peers. Our study is cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical. The primary point was the number of errors in the Danva 2F, which is a validated and standardized assessment tool (basic emotional expression). Results: show that our clinical group made significantly more errors in the recognition of facial emotional expressions than what is observed in population and standardized in our control population. Risk factors of the number of errors made in the Danva are highlighted: the intensity of socio-communicative disorders present as measured by the ADOS (ORa=2,08 ; IC 95%= [1,02/4,22] ; p=0,006). Protective factors are identified, linked to a low of stereotyped and repetitive patterns score below the threshold of the area 3 of the ADI (DANVA AF: ORa=0,078 ; IC 95%= [0,007/0,883] ; p=0,02. DANVA CF: ORa: 0,05 ; IC 95%= [0,005/0,44] ; p=0,0004). Conclusion: results allow us to observe a disorder of the ability to recognize facial expressions in our clinical group and the presence of risk factors and protective factors related to it. Perspectives: use a larger sample to study clinical parameters more related to emotional processing, our clinical work emphasizes the importance of early intervention multimodal, to improve the capacity of emotional processing

Abstract:

This report is about Adobe Acrobat 3D and their new PDF format witch can contain 3 dimensional models that are interactive. The purpose is to find out if the program and the format work in a level that is suitable for the market. To create this PDF you need Acrobat 3D installed on your computer but it only needs Acrobat Reader 7 or 8 to open it, and the Reader is free to download on the internet.

The examination is focusing on four formats: U3D, 3DS, DWG and DXF because they are the most common in the building industry seen from the architects’ way. From a 3D model exported to these four formats they where converted to PDF in different settings to be compared in different points as information and size of the files. The result where put together in tables for an easy overview.

During the work there were no big differences between the results from the different settings noticed. The differences depended more from which format the PDF where converted from. Then the program is not that old on the market there are still some things that can be improved.

This study seeks to assess whether the provision method for doubtful accounts (PDD, or 'Provisão para Devedores Duvidosos') adopted by financial institutions is applicable in retail companies and if there are adjustments needed to improve the use of these methods in this sector. Banks and other financial institutions have unique characteristics in the composition of its loan portfolio, which require the adoption of different procedures in the PDD composition against those charged by other sectors (i.e. trade, industry or services), which are free to actualize the loss provisioning. Financial companies are regulated by the Central Bank of Brazil through the Resolution of the National Monetary Council No. 2682 of December 21th 1999 which determines percentage, terms and minimum levels of classification, and which leaves the task of developing risk models for the institutions. Based on the Resolution by Central Bank of Brazil, this study evaluate the adoption of provisioning models used by financial institutions in the receivables’ portfolio from suppliers in a Brazilian retail company, and through an academic work applied to propose a model for allowance for doubtful accounts of this portfolio. The main objective is achieved due to the risk model developed fits better the provision in the losses. This benefit has two effects: first in the profits, as it reduces the expenses with allowances, and second since it smooths impacts of bad debts.

Abstract:

The Affective PDF Reader is a PDF Reader combined with affect recognition systems. The aim of the project is to research a way to provide the reader of a PDF with real - time visual feedback while reading the text to influence the reading experience in a positive way. The visual feedback is given in accordance to analyzed emotional states of the person reading the text - this is done by capturing and interpreting affective information with a facial expression recognition system. Further enhancements would also include analysis of voice in the computation as well as gaze tracking software to be able to use the point of gaze when rendering the visualizations. The idea of the Affective PDF Reader mainly arose in admitting that the way we read text on computers, mostly with frozen and dozed off faces, is somehow an unsatisfactory state or moreover a lonesome process and a poor communication. This work is also inspired by the significant progress and efforts in recognizing emotional states from video and audio signals and the new possibilities that arise from. The prototype system was providing visualizations of footprints in different shapes and colours which were controlled by captured facial expressions to enrich the textual content with affective information. The experience showed that visual feedback controlled by utterances of facial expressions can bring another dimension to the reading experience if the visual feedback is done in a frugal and non intrusive way and it showed that the evolvement of the users can be enhanced.

Abstract:

There are many attempts to bridge paper digital gap, new artifacts and tools are being delivered continuously. Many of these artifacts work with paper and cooperate with other artifacts. Despite the fact that these artifacts are good enough to perform their work, they tend to be dull in exchanging data and cooperating with other artifacts. This causes a problem especially when artifact cooperation is essential. In order to solve this we need to have a standard to present the data used in the artifacts and facilitate communication among artifacts. Paper Digital Classes is a new standard that aims at providing a standard implementation of the artifacts in matters of data exchange and interoperability.
