Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to demonstrate a practical use case of PDF/A file format for digitization of textual documents, following recommendation of using PDF/A as a preferred digitization file format. The authors showed how to convert and combine all the TIFFs with associated metadata into a single PDF/A-2b file for a document. Using open source software with real-life examples, the authors show readers how to convert TIFF images, extract associated metadata and ICC profiles, and validate against the newly released PDF/A validator. The generated PDF/A file is a self-contained and self-described container which accommodates all the data from digitization of textual materials, including page-level metadata and/or ICC profiles. With theoretical analysis and empirical examples, PDF/A file format has many advantages over traditional preferred file format TIFF / JPEG2000 for digitization of textual documents.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to introduce PDF/A to replace TIFF as the preferred file format for digitization of textual documents. In addition, PDF/A can be used as an open archival information system (OAIS) submission information package (SIP) container to reduce digitization and digital preservation costs. Design/methodology/approach – The author first reviewed the current digitization guidelines, the OAIS model and provides on an overview of the development PDF and PDF/A as international standards. Then literature review of the uses of PDF/A is presented. The author analyzed pitfalls of TIFFs as the preferred format for digitization, and showed how to use PDF/A to code digitization SIP. Findings – TIFF file format has been the preferred master file format by Federal Agency Digitization Guidelines Initiative digitization guidelines for the past 20 years. However, there are drawbacks of TIFF format. Literature reviews show that PDF/A has been the preferred standard for coding born-digital documents in court, government and business sectors. PDF/A-2 and PDF/A-3 are relatively new standards released after 2010. However, few understood the standards and have utilized the full potentials in digitization. The author shows that PDF/A can be used as an OAIS SIP container. Practical implications – In order to delivery OAIS SIPs, current practices require a combination of files, directories and various types of metadata. The author shows that PDF/A (PDF/A-2 and/or PDF/A-3) can be a better file format for textual document digitization with coding various types of metadata in extensible metadata platform and arbitrary file/data can be coded in PDF/A-3. These features in PDF/A provide much better ways to deliver SIPs in a cost-efficient manner. Originality/value – PDF/A has been recognized as the preferred standard for born-digital documents, but it has not been used as the preferred file format for digitized materials. The author recommends that: PDF/A with lossless JPX compressions as the preferred file format; and PDF/A with lossless JPX compressions along with metadata/data as the preferred OAIS SIP container. As a result, the uses reduce costs in digitization and digital preservation and also increase productivity. The author recommends to update the national and international digitization practices using PDF/A.

Abstract:
The International Centre for Diffraction Data (ICDD) produces the Powder Diffraction File (PDF). This paper discusses some of the seminal events in the history of producing this primary reference for powder diffraction. Recent key events that center on collaborative initiatives have led to an enormous jump in entry population for the PDF. Collective efforts to editorialize the PDF are ongoing and provide enormous added value to the file. Recently, the ICDD has created a new series of the PDF, designated PDF-4. These relational database structures are being used to house the PDF of the future. The design and benefits of the PDF-4 are described.

Abstract:
The process CAD design is the key part for steel casting production in general foundry enterprises. Formerly, for those parts with PDF file from customers, especially foreign customers, the process CAD design was done just by 2D casting process CAD system depending on AutoCAD system; so the designer must spend much time drawing part by AutoCAD according the PDF file which cause low efficiency. In this paper, a new process CAD design method is proposed based on PDF file in order to avoid drawing part by AutoCAD. Fist, the framework of process CAD design is constructed. Second, as the base part of process CAD design, the practical 2D CAD frame is established. Third, the part drawing with PDF file is resolved to be displayed clearly through the Mupdf rendering engine. Finally, the casting processes design of two actual steel castings, including a pump cover casting and a large gear casting, are presented to illustrate this new process CAD design method.

Abstract:
Compression is a reduction in the size of the data to a smaller size than the original. The technique of compression is to replace the repetitive character with a certain pattern so that the data can minimize its size. Therefore the data that will be stored needs to be compressed first so that the size becomes smaller. The advantage of pdf files is that the pdf file format can not only store data in text form but also can save an image (image) or photo. In storing in pdf files, the data that will be stored is not susceptible to viruses. One pdf file compression technique that can compress images well is compressing pdf files using the J-Bit Encoding method. J-Bit Encoding (JBE) is an algorithm that optimizes input for other compression algorithms, thus the compression algorithm will be better if it is combined with the J-Bit Encoding method.

In this article, I introduce markstat, a command for combining Stata code and output with comments and annotations written in Markdown into a beautiful webpage or PDF file, thus encouraging literate programming and reproducible research. The command tangles the input separating Stata and Markdown code, runs the Stata code, relies on Pandoc to process the Markdown code, and then weaves the outputs into a single file. HTML documents may include inline and display math using MathJax. Generating PDF output requires access to LATEX and a style file from Stata but works with the same input file.

Abstract:
As traditional Preformatted Paper Printing methods can't adapt to the changes of document style and they have made poor performance on document security, in this paper, we have presented a PDF-based solution for Preformatted Paper Printing. The solution consists of three levels, including data organization layer, template editing and configuration layer, and PDF file generation layer. The data organization layer is mainly to solve the problem of data extraction and summary from heterogeneous databases. The template editing and configuration layer focuses on solving the printing template design and data output mapping problem. The PDF file generation layer is mainly to generate and merge the PDF file using iTextSharp component. The scheme can flexibly adapt to changes in content and style, set up parameters simultaneously to prevent a tamper, and undertake operations such as reprint, archive, distribution and so forth. At last, we have verified the solutions performance by the case of university admission notice-Generating. The result shows that our solution is effective.
