This paper presents study of a thermomechanical bimorph actuator, constituted by layers of polymer composite material. The proposed bimorph consists of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and carbon black-polydimethylsiloxane (CB-PDMS) polymer composite layered structure. The thermomechanical response of the PDMS and CB-PDMS material is studied. Deflection of bimorph for change in temperature is studied for different thickness and volume percentage of CB bimorph. Three different thicknesses and three volume fractions of CB are used for analysis of bimorph. Deflections of the bimorph are obtained from

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is one of the most popular elastomers and has been used in different fields, especially in biomechanics research. Among the many interesting features of this material, its hyperelastic behavior stands out, which allows the use of PDMS in various applications, like the ones that mimic soft tissues. However, the hyperelastic behavior is not linear and needs detailed analysis, especially the characterization of shear strain. In this work, two approaches, numerical and experimental, were proposed to characterize the effect of shear strain on PDMS. The experimental metho

Since the National Health Service reforms were introduced, the NHS has moved towards a greater emphasis on accountability and efficiency of healthcare. These changes rely on the swift delivery of IT systems, implemented into the NHS because of the urgency to collect data to support these measures. The case study details the events surrounding the introduction of a patient data management system into an intensive care unit in a UK hospital. It shows that its implementation was complex and involved organizational issues related to the costing of healthcare, legal and purchasing requirements, systems integration, training and staff expertise, and relationships with suppliers. It is suggested that the NHS is providing an R&D environment which others are benefiting from. The NHS is supporting software development activities that are not recognized, and the true costs of this task are difficult to estimate. It is also argued that introducing PDMS crystallizes many different expectations making them unmanageably complex. This could also be due to PDMS being a higher order innovation that attempts to integrate information systems products and services with the core business.

Abstract:
Origami folding patterns are finding use in novel applications where actual device response depends on current, possibly intermediate, shapes on the path toward the final target shape. This works investigates one origami pattern, developing metrics for performance that incorporate traditional shape approximation and actuator efficiency, while adding proxy measures of adherence to the target folding path. Magnetically actuated Miura-Ori structures were develop using an initially heuristic strategy involving experiment, observation, and computation before being studied using trade space optimiza
