Background: Power Doppler ultrasound (PDUS) with spectral wave analysis (SWA) has been compared with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in documenting active sacroiliitis in early spondyloarthritis (SpA) but, to date, PDUS/SWA has not been yet applied to the study of sacroiliac joints (SIJs) in children. Methods: A group of 20 children (13 F/7 M, mean age 14.2 y) with suspected juvenile SpA (jSpA) underwent PDUS/SWA and, subsequently, MRI of the SIJs. SIJs PDUS scoring and resistance index (RI) of the SIJs flows were recorded. The accuracy of PDUS/SWA for the diagnosis of active sacroiliitis was

MC-PDGI/PAAm gels are cylindrical composite gels containing poly(dodecyl glyceryl itaconate) (PDGI) as a polymerized lipid oriented in a multilayer tubular shape within a polyacrylamide (PAAm) network. The most unique feature of the MC-PDGI/PAAm gel is its super-anisotropic swelling, wherein the diameter of the gel increases, but the length decreases with an increase in the volume of the gel. Through swelling and small-angle X-ray diffraction experiments, we investigated the effects of PDGI lipid bilayers and polymer network on the swelling of the MC-PDGI/PAAm gel, which suggests that the swel

Abstract Background Our lab has recently shown that adherent-invasive E. coli (AIEC), which is enriched in patients with Crohn’s disease, is sufficient to induce intestinal Th17 cell inflammation. Although AIEC lack pathogenic factors including type III secretion systems, virulence-associated metabolic enzymes, including propanediol dehydratase (PduC), enable AIEC to use fucose-derived propanediol as an alternate carbon source in the gut. We hypothesised that this propanediol utilisation pathway functionally modulates AIEC contribution to intestinal tissue immunity and inflammation. Methods We

ABSTRACT Salmonella enterica degrades 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PD) in a coenzyme B12-dependent manner. Previous enzymatic assays of crude cell extracts indicated that a phosphotransacylase (PTAC) was needed for this process, but the enzyme involved was not identified. Here, we show that the pduL gene encodes an evolutionarily distinct PTAC used for 1,2-PD degradation. Growth tests showed that pduL mutants were unable to ferment 1,2-PD and were also impaired for aerobic growth on this compound.
