Abstract:
The decade from 1985 to 1997 saw rapid social and economic change in the 27 remote hunting and trapping First Nations of Northwestern Ontario. The area also saw an eightfold increase in the suicide rate despite the introduction of a multi-million dollar system of outside helping services. By assuming control of health services, the First Nations have increased the ability to address health and social service problems locally.

Bäccman, Charlotte. "Mind over matter : Non-cognitive assessments for the selection of the Swedish voluntary soldier of peace." Doctoral thesis, Karlstads universitet, Institutionen för sociala och psykologiska studier, 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-37934.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis was firstly, to investigate if the current selection system mirrors the task of international deployment and voluntariness. Secondly, to investigate if and how non-cognitive assessments of personality and resilience, individual aspects that seem underrepresented in the current selection system, may increment validity to the current selection system. Since 2012 the Swedish Armed Forces is an All-volunteer Force where young men and women voluntarily can apply for a military service. In contrast to conscription, military service today includes compulsory international deployments with different demands on the personnel’s range of possible abilities and skills as well as selection process—yet the current selection system may not sufficiently correspond to the changes. The thesis comprises four studies (Study I-IV) with relevant military samples, and aside from Study I, a validation of a short version personality questionnaire (PQ) being used in two of the subsequent studies, Study II-IV had a longitudinal design. Study II shows that the former selection system lacked prognostic value of soldiers’ performance during international deployment, and their ability to readjust at homecoming. Additionally, Study II shows that non-cognitive assessments can be used as predictors for readjustment. Study III indicates that international deployment does not need to be harmful for the psychological well-being and that good health seems to be a stable factor across time and situations. Thus, selection of “good health” and resilience may prove fruitful. Study IV suggests that high motivation to serve may have serious consequences for selection decisions and, in the long run, the recruits’ psychological well-being. In sum, this thesis suggests that the current selection system needs adaption to the task of repeated international deployments and to the voluntary applicant pool, and that non-cognitive assessment may increment validity.
Since the end of the Cold War the Swedish Armed Forces has undergone several changes regarding both task and personnel system. The task of national security does not only entail territorial defense but also international operations worldwide. In addition, the soldiers are no longer conscripts but young men and women who have volunteered to secure and uphold peace and democratic values. The purpose of this thesis was twofold: firstly, to investigate if the current selection system mirrors the recent refocus on international operations and voluntariness; secondly, to see if and how non-cognitive assessments of personality, health, and resilience increment validity to the current selection system in identifying individuals suitable for repeated international deployments. This work was guided by a series of tentative questions regarding both the selection system in particular, but also international deployments in general. The four papers in this thesis suggest that the current selection system need to be adapted to better correspond to repeated international deployments as well as to a voluntary applicant pool; and that non-cognitive assessments of personality, health, and resilience increment validity to the selection system.

Alexander, Kimberly A. "Emotional Health, Well-Being, And Religion as Quest." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2000. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc2587/.

Abstract:
This study examined the relationship between the religious orientation quest and well-being using the 1998 General Social Survey. In addition to the religious orientation quest the extrinsic and intrinsic religious orientations were also investigated. Analysis of the data indicated that there was a slight negative association between quest and general well-being, while also demonstrating a strong positive association between quest and inner peace. These results underscore the supposition that quest is an orientation that is complex and ultimately deserves further attention.

Murphy, Terence I. "Minnesota boy, journeys of mind and place: A memoir; and, International development in the era of mass travel : an essay." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2010. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/144.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis, in two parts, comprises a memoir and a supporting essay. The memoir, ‘Minnesota Boy, Journeys of Mind and Place,’ covers a lifetime, but focuses primarily on the author’s experience of working in international development programs in various countries of Asia and the Pacific Islands; The essay, ‘International Development in the Era of Mass Travel,’ examines the historical and institutional context of the two overlapping fields of that experience, that is, travel and development. Like the essay, the memoir has two threads. The first thread charts the learning curve of a boy from a rural homestead in Northern Minnesota, through the fundamentals of family and early education, out into a world of former colonies that are making the transition to independent states, while along the way passing through the sometimes traumatic, often exciting, turmoil of 1960s San Francisco, and ultimately settling—after years of travel—in the Western Australian port city of Fremantle. The second thread offers a dynamic and personal view of life in six countries, two in the Western Pacific, and four in Asia, as experienced over the course of more than forty years, beginning with the deeply troubled former French colonies of Cambodia and Vietnam in the early 1960s and culminating in an energetic and newly democratic Indonesia in 2006. The essay examines the history as well as the literature of international travel as a corollary of the outward thrust of European power from the fifteenth century onwards, illustrating the relationship between the quest for wealth through trade, the increasing momentum of colonial expansion, and the growing literature and business of travel. With the gradual disintegration of the colonial empires following World War Two, and an intensifying ideological competition between the Euro-American states and the Soviet Union and China, the move to shore up the newly independent former colonies through programs of directed financial and technical assistance burgeoned into a multi-billion dollar international enterprise, fostering as well a body of literature to analyse, explain and critique its programs. The essay reviews the origins and progress of that program of international development assistance, or foreign aid, and appraises the literature that followed in its wake. In sum, in its two parts the thesis unites one person’s experience of, and insights into, the rapid, often traumatic, changes of a post-war, post-colonial world with the history and literature of development and travel that constitute the circumstances of that experience.

Ab, Rahman Anis Amira Binti. "A phenomenon of creative leadership in small high technology firms : the interplay of aesthetic, peace of mind, companionship and space for innovation." Thesis, University of Essex, 2013. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.605144.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to understand the nature of the creative leadership phenomenon in small high technology firms (SHTFs) by exploring and explaining the phenomenon. The existing landscape on creative leadership's research focuses on the outcome perspective with a sing le level analysis by utilising cognitive dimension in understanding the phenomenon. Therefore, this thesis suggests a new theory that explains the phenomenon based on a process perspective with multilevel analysis, which analyses individual, team and organisation levels by highlighting the central position of the aesthetic dimension. The current study is qualitative in nature and is underpinned by phenomenological symbolic interactionism, which facilitated the theory development process. An Abductive case study as a research strategy was employed. The narratives that explained the phenomenon were sought from the leaders and their followers in two SHTFs and two small low-technology firms (SLTFs) which also helped to increase the understanding of the creative leadership phenomenon in SHTFs. The results of the study unfold two issues that are the contributions to creative leadership and entrepreneurship knowledge. The new theory that is based on the findings suggests that: the creative leadership phenomenon is about tile individual leaders and their followers in SHTFs utilise felt meanings with cognitive abilities to appraise the situation and cope tile situation with companionship relationship and pleasant space for innovation. This study makes several theoretical and empirical contributions to the theories of creative leadership (the new theory) and small technology firm (the similarities and differences between SHTFs and SLTFs). It created a new theory that increases the understanding of the leaders and followers' action in small technology firms and also as guidance for the policy makers to promote creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship

Full text
Abstract:
This two part thesis investigates the lack of definition of the wording “all necessary means” and how it ultimately impacts a decision making gap between the Security Council and the troop contributing countries regarding the use of force in UN peace operations. The assumptions are based on Reus-Smit’s constructivist theory, emphasizing that both politics and international law needs to be studied with a holistic approach in order to understand how the two realms shape each other. The assumption of this thesis is that “all necessary means” is not providing enough guidance to constrain the TCCs to behave as sovereign, equal actors in an anarchical structure. The second part of the thesis is a within-case-study of MONUC/MONUSCO, and the Security Council resolution 2098 that established the Force Intervention Brigade.

Abstract:
The Self-Determination Theory (SDT) claims that autonomous motivation is a basic psychological need for all humans across cultures. When this need is met, individuals are predicted to experience well-being. However, it has been argued that autonomous motivation is not a basic need in the Chinese culture due to their philosophical background. Furthermore, commonly used instruments to measure well-being have been criticised for not measuring low arousal positive affect such as “harmony” or “peace of mind” which have been argued to more accurately target well-being for the Chinese population. The aim of this thesis is to give an overview of the psychological and cognitive neuroscientific research relating to intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, well-being and the associated cultural controversy. Additionally, a questionnaire-based study is reported which examine motivation type and well-being of 183 university students in China and in Sweden through self-reported data. The results support the SDT by showing that intrinsic motivation is correlated to well-being for both samples. Furthermore, the Swedish students experienced higher well-being compared to the Chinese students measured by the traditional “western” instruments. However, the Swedish and the Chinese students reported very similar peace of mind. This indicates that the commonly used instruments might not target well-being accurately universally. Limitations of the study and directions of future research is suggested in the discussion.

Abstract:
In an age where the sheer breadth of information, techniques and patterns appear to stifle the individual, but at the same time, encourage him/her to question oneself and others in situations that need a resolution, it is important to try and understand and simplify ones approach so as not to lose the essence of what it is to maintain ones \"humanity\". This leads to fundamental questions regarding the survival and harmonious coexistence of the species, i.e., in the effort to find ways and principles that lead to living together in peace. As such, this research intends to address these issues through the promotion (and via education) of newer methodologies and current knowledge (as opposed to outdated knowledge and materials) of the world, its objects and, their complex relationships using the modern marvels of technology, art and other mechanisms heretofor not considered. In the effort to better understand human needs in the learning process, I conducted a study on the theory of the mind, followed by a field study/examination, the purpose of which was to observe how new teaching methods put into action, specifically in two schools: EMEF Desembargador Amorim Lima and Waldorf Schools. Accordingly, I interviewed several teachers to learn their motivations for the adoption of this new direction in their teaching practices, after they graduated from the traditional educational system. I found that their approach took into consideration subsidizing the education of their students in order to give them the opportunity to grow into thinking adults who are able to criticize and reflect on their own reality, thus allowing the creation of mechanisms of interaction with the world around them.

Njeri, Sarah. "A Minefield of Possibilities: The viability of Liberal Peace in Somaliland, with particular reference to Mine Action." Thesis, University of Bradford, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/8101.

Full text
Abstract:
The dominant liberal peacebuilding critiques tends to focus on ‘states’ and the failure of interventions in rebuilding them. Consequently, a standardised critique has emerged largely because the critics apply a broad brush across a diverse range of contexts, programmes, issues and activities as illustrated by the lack of scrutiny on mine action and emerging contexts such as Somaliland. The liberal peacebuilding critics critique the standardised ‘one size fits all approach’ employed by interveners, yet they take the same approach. I therefore argue for the need to broaden the critique to include other elements and contexts of peacebuilding. I demonstrate that as an intervention mine action has intrinsic peacebuilding potential. However, the way mine action is implemented both globally and in Somaliland reflects the same dominant characteristics of the liberal peacebuilding critique i.e.; it is externally led; uses technical and standardised formulaic approaches; disregards local context thus failing to secure local ownership. Attributes that the critics argue have led to the failure and/or limited success of peacebuilding interventions. I therefore contend with the critics and demonstrate how these attributes have contributed to the challenges of implementing mine action activities thereby limiting mine actions ‘peace-ability’ potential in Somaliland. However, beyond the implementation modalities there are other factors that further contribute to limiting this potential; these include the Sector Actors; the Somaliland context i.e. the historical and political context, and the perception of Somaliland people. Thus in conclusion I argue for a nuanced critique that acknowledges the challenging realities of implementing programmes in challenging post conflict environments.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on two early and middle Ming (1368-1580) artists and deals with the role of Chinese historiography in the perpetuation of the dichotomy between the so-called "professional" and the so-called "scholar-amateur" artist. While traditional Chinese historical and biographical sources are an invaluable tool for the sinologist, including the Chinese art historian, the convention adopted by Chinese historians of casting subjects into standard characterized roles has contributed to this dichotomy and resulted in the ongoing debate over the value of the professional artist in China. Historically, Chinese critics and collectors have made a distinction between professional and amateur artists. The traditional Chinese critical bias has been in favour of the scholar-amateur artist. In fact, in much critical literature there is a stigma attached to professionalism in painting. The major initial Western studies of Chinese painting represented a continuation of the traditional Chinese dichotomies. More recently, various kinds of positions have been taken up by Western scholars. James Cahill suggests that a correlation can be made between an artist's painting style and social and economic factors (such as lifestyle, formal training, means of livelihood, demands of patrons, and so on). Richard Barnhart instead defends the professional artist: He believes that Cahill perpetuates the bias in favour of the amateur artist, and that a correlation between an artist's style and social and economic factors is not useful, being too restrictive and general. Their debate was taken up in a series of letters, and this debate has continued down to the present. Some of the most recent Western interpretations attempt to try to break down the earlier dichotomies, and my research supports this interpretive trend. In this context the thesis examines the life and works of two relatively minor artists of the Ming dynasty, the "professional" artist Wu Wei (1459-1508) and the "scholar-amateur" artist Lu Zhi (1496-1576). I discuss the Chinese biographical tradition and have translated the appropriate texts and biographies. Then by examining the paintings themselves in the context of the two artists' environments — Wu Wei in Beijing and Nanjing and Lu Zhi in Suzhou — I show that both of these artists enjoyed the freedom of working in a wide variety of different painting traditions. Early and middle Ming painting criticism is also examined, in addition to the influence of Late Ming (1580-1644) painting criticism and its effect on our perception of Chinese artists. In terms of style, aesthetics, and intellectual outlook, Wu Wei and Lu Zhi may, at first, appear to stand at opposite poles. However, my study of the life circumstances of Wu Wei and Lu Zhi reveals that they share surprisingly similar backgrounds, concerns, and views on their artwork. In addition, an examination of the works of these two artists suggests that a greater fluidity of style and of subject matter existed in the early and middle Ming period than one would expect from the theories based on Late Ming criticism. In other words, the distinction between professional and scholar-amateur artists is overdrawn: Wu Wei and Lu Zhi do not fit neatly into the later understandings of accepted categories or roles, nor do their paintings entirely accord with the theories originating in the Late Ming Period.

Johnson, Melinda M. "Building Bridges: Church Women United and Social Reform Work Across the Mid-Twentieth Century." UKnowledge, 2015. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/history_etds/29.

Full text
Abstract:
Church Women United incorporated in December 1941 as an interdenominational and interracial movement of liberal Protestant women committed to social reform. The one hundred organizers represented ten million Protestant women across the United States. They organized with the express purposes of helping to bring peace on Earth and to develop total equality within all humanity. Church Women United was the bridge between the First and Second Wave of Feminism and the bridge between the Social Gospel and Social Justice Movements. Additionally they connected laterally with numerous social and religious groups across American society. As such, they exemplify the continuity and matrix of reform in American history. Because they worked to promote international peace, develop positive race relations, and advance women’s rights, their campaigns give us a model for how to rectify the social problems of today. These women used communal prayer, politics, education, and hands-on labor to promote their ideas. They originated in collective prayer and continued this tool, but they added letter writing campaigns, public education forums, and lobbying politicians at all levels including the president to advance their goals. They held massive campaigns to collect needed items for war-torn countries and natural disaster areas as well as acting as counselors to the needy. They raised public awareness of issues facing migrant laborers, inner-city residents, Native Americans, Japanese internment detainees, and then worked hard to ameliorate the worst of these problems. They promoted literacy around the world, as well as new agricultural techniques to address human conditions that were known to lead to political and social unrest. This dissertation covers the mid-twentieth century while being predominately focused on the years 1941-1968. This study is built upon multiple archives across the United States and oral histories of movement leaders. It is one of the first interdenominational studies focused on the work of women in social reform work. This dissertation enlarges our knowledge of feminism and social reform work.

Muller, Claudia. "Extended frequency amplification, speech recognition and functional performance in children with mild to severe sensorineural hearing loss." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/30077.

Full text
Abstract:
A substantial body of research points to the benefits of fitting hearing instruments that provides extended high frequency amplification. Most published research were done on adults or in controlled laboratory settings. It is therefore necessary for peadiatric audiologists to critically assess the effects that this extended high frequency amplification has on the individual child fitted with hearing instruments. A quantitative research method was selected to explore the possible correlations between extended high frequency amplification and the influence this extended high frequency amplification has on speech recognition and functional performance in children with mild to severe sensory neural hearing loss. A quasiexperimental design was selected. This design accommodated a one-group (single-system) pre-test versus post-test design. Baseline assessments were done and all participants were subjected to pre- and post-intervention assessments. Six participants were fitted with hearing instruments which provided extended high frequency amplification. A baseline assessment was done with current hearing instruments after which participants were assessed with the hearing instruments with extended high frequency amplification. Aided audiological assessments were done without the extended high frequencies after which participants were evaluated with the added high frequencies. Speech recognition testing and functional performance questionnaires were used to compare the outcomes obtained with and without the extended high frequency amplification. A t-test was used for hypothesis testing to determine if extended range amplification increased speech recognition abilities and functional performance, and if these increases were statistically significant. Results were varied where some participants performed better and some performed worse with the added extended range amplification during speech recognition testing and functional performances observed at home. These varied results were statistically insignificant. However, statistically significant evidence was obtained to indicate that extended high frequency amplification increased the functional performance observed at school. The study concluded that the paediatric audiologist should know the effect fitting hearing instruments capable of extended high frequency amplification have on speech recognition abilities and functional performances. Fitting hearing instruments with extended high frequency amplification should however be done with caution because not all children benefited from extended bandwidth amplification. This underlines the importance of following a strict evidence-based approach that incorporates objective and subjective assessment approaches. This will provide the paediatric audiologist with real world evidence of the success of the amplification strategy that is followed.

Abstract:
By 1836 both the Presbyterians and the Jesuits had penetrated the Pacific Northwest. The Whitmans and the Spaldings were the first Presbyterians to settle in this region. The Whitmans settled with the Cayuse at W ailaptu near Walla Walla and the Spaldings resided at Lapwaii with the Nez Perce tribe. Although two Canadian priests were working in this region, it was not until 1840, with the arrival of Father Jean-Pierre DeSmet that the Jesuits commenced their missionary work. Fr. DeSmet initially settled with the Flathead tribe in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana. This paper observes how the Jesuits in Montana and the Presbyterians in the Columbia basin related with their respective tribes. With each situation a pattern occurs of tribal acceptance and rejection. The different tribes were initially eager to learn from the missionaries but as the years pass by, the novelty of Christianity wore thin. What became more obvious to the tribal members was that slowly their numbers were diminishing due to disease brought over by white settlers and simultaneously their land was disappearing as the pioneers built their homes. This observation resulted directly in the Native American rejection of the Christian missionaries. The Jesuits and the Spaldings were fortunate to escape without physical harm. This was not the case, though for Dr. Marcus and Narcissa Whitman who lost their lives in the Whitman massacre. To understand the reasons for this rejection, this paper spends the first few chapters looking into the background of the three tribes as well as the missionaries. It then examines the three different tribes and their history with their respective missionaries, observing the reasons, both long and short term for their failures. In the final chapter the paper investigates the obvious yet undocumented competition between the Catholic and Protestant missionaries to be the sole religion in this region. Their co-existence of these two faiths was another factor which resulted in the disillusionment of the Native American tribes in this region.

Simson, William Ronald. "Removing Reds from the Old Red Scar: Maintaining and Industrial Peace in the East Tennessee Copper Basin from the Great War through the Second World War." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2010. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/history_diss/17.

Full text
Abstract:
This study considers industrial society and development in the East Tennessee Copper Basin from the 1890s through World War II; its main focus will be on the primary industrial concern, Tennessee Copper Company (TCC 1899), owned by the Lewisohn Group, New York. The study differs from other Appalachian scholarship in its assessment of New South industries generally overlooked. Wars and increased reliance on organic chemicals tied the basin to defense needs and agricultural advance. Locals understood the basin held expanding economic opportunities superior to those in the surrounding mountains and saw themselves as participants in the nation’s industrial and economic progress, and a vital part of its defense. The study upends earlier scholarship contending local industrial concerns acted proactively to challenges from farmers harmed by industrial pollution; investigation shows firms hesitated to initiate new production processes and manipulated local elections. Partisan developments woven amid all this underscore errors in assuming ancient regional affinity for Republicans. Confederate heritage gave Democrats an historic advantage that fractured before New Deal progressivism and expanding basin Republican power. Markets forced basin firms to merge and embrace technological change affecting working people’s relationships, forcing workers to improve skills or settle for low-skill jobs. Excepting TCC managers and supervisory staff, provincialism ruled; suspicions and competitiveness among workers grew as most miners lived a few scattered villages and most managers and craftsmen settled in the basin’s “Twin-cities” district. Early union efforts collapsed before union mismanagement, rational management and a company union based upon Sam Lewisohn’s ideals. Management managed to wrest control of its industrial relations despite the effects of Depression and the New Deal’s empowerment of workers. Workers’ infighting, reflecting neighborhood demographics and ideological differences, benefitted TCC; it convinced locals TCC could best protect industrial peace. The submissive AFL union installed fit of ownership’s nationally recognized program for industrial relations reliant on federal power. After competition crippled local industry, locals continued their reliance on government: to investigate the medical consequences of extraction work and coordinate environmental restoration. Recent regional anti-government populism makes the basin’s peculiar historic reliance on federal help engaging.

Abstract:
History has lessons for the present; could this be the case for modern counterinsurgency operations in countries resembling Iraq and Afghanistan? This research set out to study three historical counter-insurgencies campaigns in, Malaya (1947-1960), Kenya (1952- 1960) and Rhodesia (1964-1980), with a view to establishing whether or not the Colonial authorities had a substantial advantage over modern forces when combating insurgencies. If this was the case, are these advantages transferable to aid forces involved in modern counterinsurgencies? The research questions focussed on how important the role of the Colonial Forces was to the eventual outcome, examining the principal factors that contributed to their effectiveness? Included in this examination were aspects of strategy, together with an appreciation of the concept of ‘hearts and minds’, tactics and the evolution of counterinsurgency doctrine. A qualitative research design was adopted, using a case study methodology based upon comparative analysis of the data collected. Case studies were constructed for the three conflicts, based around the narratives obtained from a series of semi-structured interviews, with surviving members of the security forces; predominately police and Special Branch. The primary data was coded, using a thematic framework developed from the Literature Review. These themes were then synthesised, analysed and interpreted in response to the research questions related to the perceived problem. Lastly, the findings were compared and contrasted to provide theoretical recommendations and conclusions. The study indicated the significant role played by the Colonial Police Forces, especially Special Branch, which appears to have been instrumental in dominating initiatives against the rebels. Supporting the police, were Colonial army units together with locally recruited indigenous militias in a combined approach to prosecuting an effective counterinsurgency campaign. In addition, this was reinforced by the Colonial Government’s ability to apply draconian legislation in support of the strategic plan, to reinforce the rule of law by the police, coupled with its ability to garner popular support through civil projects, such as schools, clinics and housing. Evolving counter-insurgency doctrine advocated the need to cut off the insurgents from their supplies, by separating them from the general population. Separation was achieved by the forced movement of the population into ‘Protected Villages’ backed up by food control, harsh collective punishments, detention and curfews. Further key beneficial factors for the Colonial Forces included their knowledge of religious customs, culture and language, which enhanced their ability to gather vital intelligence direct from the population; rather than second hand. Analysing the concept of ‘hearts and minds’ since 1947, indicated it was evolving as a strategy and was not operationally as well accepted as it is today. Although often considered a benevolent approach to gaining the support of the population, the research also demonstrated the antithesis of this approach occurred by the insurgents applying power over ‘minds’ of the population though intimidation, terrorism, and physiological control. This psychological control was achieved through sorcery, spirit mediums and the taking of oaths. Ultimately, political solutions not military ones ended the insurgencies. The theoretical recommendations indicated that greater attention needs to be expended in training counter-insurgency forces to empathise with the local population when conducting overseas operations; especially improved knowledge of religious customs, culture and language. The outcome would enhance their capabilities through better population support resulting in superior intelligence.

Background and purpose Physical activity is one of the important health behaviors, and is very helpful for physical and mental health of adults. According to past surveys and studies, it was found that the amount of physical activity of adults was under ideal. This might lead to the following related issues, such as obesity, poor physical fitness, and increasing the probability of illness, and thus it will more likely lead to the loss of personal health and increasing social medical costs. In recent years, many studies have focused on investigating the relationship among physical activity, quality of life, and happiness, but the relationship between the psychological field of health-related quality of life and physical activity has not been established. Moreover, most studies did not use the construct of well-being which emphasized peacefulness and harmony in the inner state. If we can understand the above relationship, promoting regular exercise might effectively improve adults' quality of life and happiness. Method The participants in this study were 378 adults (18-65 years old). The instruments used included the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), Short Form-36 Health Survey (SF-36), and Peace of Mind Scale to measure the amount of physical activity, health-related quality of life, and peace of mind respectively. Structural Equation Model (SEM) was used to analyze the data. Results The results of this study showed significant positive correlations among physical activity, physiological field of health-related quality of life, psychological field of health related quality of life, and peace of mind. In path analysis, the best-fit model showed that physical activity improved the psychological field of health-related quality of life via the physiological field of health-related quality of life, and physical activity could also improve peace of mind via health-related quality of life. Discussion As physical activity has meditation characteristics, it can train individuals being less distracted from positive or negative stimuli. Although this may lead to experience fewer mood fluctuations in daily life, it may only lead to the state of peacefulness. Only when both the physiological field and the psychological field of health-related quality of life are raised, individuals can experience harmony and balance in the inner state. That is, physical activity required the mediation of health-related quality of life in order to enhance a higher level of happiness – peace of mind.

Mindfulness is a kind of awareness that can help individuals to break away from their subjective perspectives and then to develop their own thoughts and emotions. In modern studies using mindfulness in adults, the studies show that mind-mediation, meditation or intervention based on mindfulness can reduce individual stress, anxiety and depression symptoms, and increase their positive mood and life satisfaction. Mindfulness can promote recovery from work stress, thereby improving one’s resilience and happiness at work. In order to explore the correlation between work stress, job burnout, job satisfaction, and mindfulness, the study is based on mindfulness as a mediator between work stress and burnout. That’s a quantitative study in which, the convenience sampling method was used to collect data on main office workers in New Taipei City and Taipei City, and 231 valid samples were collected. After the questionnaire was collected, Amos and SPSS statistical software were used to analyze the structural equation model and the independent sample T test. This leads to the following preliminary findings within the context of domestic office workers: (1) Work stress positively affects burnout. (2) Work stress negatively affects job satisfaction. (3) Job satisfaction negatively affects burnout. (4) The work stress mediates through job satisfaction to positively affects the burnout. (5) Mindfulness positively regulates the impact of work stress on burnout.

How do non-governmental actors exert power beyond the confines of nation-states? Examining the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (CEIP) and its network of European foreign policy elites, I argue that non-governmental actors developed transnational political agendas in part to counter the democratizing and social shifts of the early 20th century. Throughout the interwar period the CEIP emerged as a key participant in cultural internationalism by providing financial and logistical aid for transnational outreach. Well connected to social elites in several countries, the CEIP's emergence illustrates how internationalism was inexorably structured by economic, social and cultural capital. As formerly marginalized social groups—e.g. women, organized labor and ethnic minorities became more integrated into national decision-making processes, traditional elites began to erect new barriers around transnational spaces to preserve existing power structures. The project investigates how the CEIP fostered the construction, transformation and circulation of expertise among the technical experts. Starting in the mid-1920s, the foundation promoted networking between economists, international lawyers and other specialists who staffed foreign ministries and international organizations such as the League of Nations, the International Labor Organization and the Permanent Court of International Justice. The CEIP used these connections and the power of the purse to stimulate the development of professional communities with the ultimate goal of reaching policy consensus on the divisive issues of the time thus in effect promoting the development of alternative governance mechanisms. This attempt to construct a techncratic "international mind" faltered with the beginning of the Second World War. Yet, tracing the careers of CEIP-connected experts into the post-war planning projects, the thesis ultimately challenges "creationist" narratives of international financial, human rights and security regimes after 1945. Many of the international policies implemented in the second half of the 1940s did not represent a clean break with a failed past. They were legacies of an attempt to make the world safe for a return to the liberal capitalist order that had marked the long 19th century.

Abstract:
This dissertation uncovers a strand in early twentieth century British literature that is currently missing from readings of modernism - a fascination with portraying meditative states of mind. Modernist authors were intrigued by the mind's capacity to be in constant movement between the present, past, and future - what they represented as a stream of consciousness. This study examines the potential of the "still," calm, and concentrated mind in modernist visions of consciousness by exploring how the meditative mind takes a different shape in theme and form in the writings of Virginia Woolf, D.H. Lawrence, and Aldous Huxley. Drawing from the works' preoccupation with physical practices such as spiritual and ritual dance, relaxation techniques, Yoga, the Alexander Technique, and meditative walking, this study highlights the role of the body in views on consciousness in modernist literature. This dissertation argues that looking at modernism through the lens of meditation allows us to see the period not only in terms of the split, wounded self in the fast-paced modern metropolis but reveals its yearning for what the authors in this study call "wholeness," "mind-body harmony," and "the spirit of peace" - a search for peace attainable within, if not without, an attempt to cure the self in the fracturing modern world through experiencing the mind at peace.

Abstract The current study was designed to investigate the experience of Feng-Shui help-seekers and to understand how they were helped from Feng-Shui as well as the reasoning patterns of the peace of mind and the psychological meaning after seeking help from Feng-Shui. One Feng-Shui master and ten Feng-Shui help-seekers were interviewed using purposeful sampling and semi-structured in-depth interviews of the qualitative research. Data were analyzed utilizing content analyses after the semi-structured in-depth interviews. Results revealed that: 1. The motives for Feng-Shui help-seekers were 1) the need for some advices to make decision and problem solving while facing a life-event. 2) the hope for good luck and wealth after setting Feng-Shui. 3) the wish for a healthy and happy family, or simply trying to seek for advice and self-confidence. 2. Feng-Shui help-seekers would get spiritual and emotional comfort and more confidence through the use of Feng-Shui. 3. If the results were positive through self-assessment after Feng-Shui setting, it would gradually become a type of religion or of collective sonsensus. 4. If the result was ineffective or insignificant, the Feng-Shui help-seekers would not question about Feng-Shui theory but either themselves or the Feng-Shui master. 5. The faith on Feng-Shui theory is one of the necessary conditions to obtain peace of mind or any substantial assistance. 6. Results of the peace of mind from Feng-Shui would be harder to obtain if help-seekers were doubtful on Feng-Shui. 7. As long as the Feng-Shui help-seekers were willing to believe, they could still obtain psychological stability and comfort from Feng-Shui without effective evidence.

Kinmen and Matsu are located on frontier islands of Fujian China. Since 1948 Taiwan separated governmental from mainland China, the islands have long been fighting-ridden. Therefore, they have become the most crucial front lines confronting mainland China. As the time has changed, Kinmen and Matsu also alter change their initial positions from the war-fronts and the springboards of counterattacking mainland to the outposts of defending Taiwan. After international cold war ended, many Taiwanese businesspeople have continued investing in mainland China and then promoted cross-strait economic trade interaction. Moreover, Taiwan government has implemented “Mini Three Links” policy, which leads to more links of cross-strait transportation on interrupted 52 years. This is also a milestone of economic trade in both Kinmen and Matsu history. May 9, 2002 President Chen Shui Bian expressed in Kinmen’s “Ta-tung” island, that it is time for both sides to reach an eternal peaceful stage. “And both sides have to show goodwill for reconciliation and cooperation,” he said. “If Kinmen is to become both a sea tourism fairyland and a happy shopping paradise, its present facilities and changes are still not sufficient,” he stressed. Hence, each ministry and council needs to put heads together for more new policies to be released. Despite a further expanding policy of “Mini Three Links”, it is still unsatisfactory for people’s needs and current trend. Thus, it is worthwhile to study the issue on Kinmen and Matsu’s future development─to build a free trade zone or a special administrative area; or to become an economy trade district or even a peace-experiment special zone. This research is base purely on the economic trade perspectives. First, the present passenger and cargo clearance situation among “Mini Three Links” is analyzing. Second, a questionnaire is formulate according to the economic and politic situations, internal strengths and weakness, external opportunities and threats to Kinmen and Matsu, together with public opinions about real needs. The questionnaire is handed out to 30-40 persons including the county chief of Kinmen and Matsu, local officials, legislators, government officials of Mainland Affairs Council, Agricultural Affairs Council, Ministry of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Communication and Transportation, Ministry of Finance and scholars or experts of Kinmen & Matsu’s development research etc. The technique of Delphi is utilize for survey examination and is completely representative. Besides, then proceed the SWOT analysis and establish of SWOT strategic planning analysis matrix are shown according to the result of survey. By the survey and analysis of questionnaire and Delphi method, this research concludes that expanding “Mini Three Links” to develop Kinmen & Matsu into a type of economic trade special district or even a peace-experiment special zone or else has become an agreeably conception among the experts and scholars. They also express urgent needs for transportation, people’s livelihood and business of Kinmen-Matsu. Finally, the research utilizes the SWOT strategic planning analysis matrix to analyses the result and then presents some concrete suggestions about the repositions of Kinmen-Matsu special district and the implementation of “Three Links”, so that they may have better outlook and prosperous future.
