Fatemi, Jaleh. "An exploratory study of peak experience and other positive human experiences and writing." Texas A&M University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/1368.

Full text
Abstract:
This study analyzes and reports on the characteristics of writing-triggered peak experience and other positive human experiences and explores some possible factors that can bring about such moments. Three basic questions were explored: Can writing trigger peak experience and other positive human experiences? How are writing-triggered peak experience and other positive human experiences best described? What factors influence the occurrence of writing-triggered peak experience and other positive human experiences? Participants were asked to write about their happiest moment in writing. The sample consisted of 270 students enrolled in undergraduate writing classes at a major southwestern university. Of 270 participants, 119(44%) reported having had at least one peak experience or similar positive human experience as a result of writing. Protocols reporting peak experience and other positive human experiences in writing were analyzed for content, yielding a total of 14 descriptive attributes. The participants described their writing experiences as flow of the words, the process of writing is its own reward, peak performance, clarity, disappearance of negative states of mind, and enhanced sense of power and personal worth. Content analysis also yielded 13 possible triggers of peak experience and other positive human experiences including self-expression, realization, free writing, use of writing for introspection, and creative and inspirational writing. In addition, personal orientation was explored as a possible trigger of peak experience and other positive human experiences using a 16-item questionnaire. Factor analysis results yielded four factors: (1) aesthetic creative expressive writing, (2) writing as a thinking and problem solving tool (3) self-discovery, and (4) not interested in writing. Factor one accounted for the highest variance (37%). The common elements in this factor were expressive writing, self-related writing and creative poetic writing with poetic and creative writing having the highest loading.

Evans, Patrick Garland. "Peak experience in educational encounters| A phenomenological-hermeneutic study." Thesis, California Institute of Integral Studies, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10117910.

Full text
Abstract:
<p> This study inquires into the peak experience of educators arising within educational encounters with students. It indicates a particular trend in education away from authoritarian modes of teacher behavior toward dialogic, empathetic relationships cultivated by teachers with their students. Also indicated is the potential for teachers to transform themselves morally, thereby creating conditions necessary for students to develop moral attitudes and behavior. By developing capacities for meditation, contemplation, and self-reflection, by developing intrapersonal and interpersonal skills, teachers enter on a path of development and actualize a truly human individuality. When self-actualization becomes a modus operando, peak experiences may give self-reflecting teachers knowledge of their own development. </p><p> A mixed-methods approach to the project was used that employed a questionnaire to: (a) establish the demographics of the sample; and (b) survey the types of peak experience that occurred within teachers resulting from educational encounters with children. The questionnaire also requested that the participant give a narrative of a peak experience. From the pool of 46 respondents, seven were chosen for interviews that ultimately clarified and enabled a deeper understanding of the narratives. The interview data and narratives were analyzed using a 3 step process proposed by Ricoeur (1986) and employed by Lindseth and Norberg (2004). The data revealed that teachers working with Steiner pedagogy have a multitude of peak experiences. These teachers use contemplative practice and self-reflection to cultivate intrinsic qualities of empathy, love, and dialogic competence. The findings also affirm that the kinds of peak experience reported by James (1901/2008), Bucke (1905/2006), Maslow (1970), and Csikszentmihalyi (1990) are definitely and extensively in evidence in the sample surveyed. Particular aspects of experience reported also included: dreaming as a mode of cognition, the prescient nature of some experiences, the prevalence of self-reflective and contemplative practices as precursors to peak and transpersonal experiences, the importance of the encounter as a condition for the emergence of such experiences within teachers.</p>

Nakka, Ravi Kumar. "Flow Accelerated Corrosion Experience at Comanche Peak Steam Electric Station." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2008. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc6072/.

Full text
Abstract:
Flow accelerated corrosion (FAC) is a major concern in the power industry as it causes thinning of the pipes by the dissolution of the passive oxide layer formed on the pipe surface. Present research deals with comparing the protection offered by the magnetite (Fe3O4) versus maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) phases thickness loss measurements. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) is used in distinguishing these two elusive phases of iron oxides. Representative pipes are collected from high pressure steam extraction line of the secondary cycle of unit 2 of Comanche Peak Steam Electric Station (CPSES). Environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) is used for morphological analysis. FTIR and X-ray diffraction (XRD) are used for phase analysis. Morphological analysis showed the presence of porous oxide surfaces with octahedral crystals, scallops and "chimney" like vents. FTIR revealed the predominance of maghemite at the most of the pipe sections. Results of thickness measurements indicate severe thickness loss at the bend areas (extrados) of the pipes.

McCabe, Andrew Scott. "Worlds of reason : the praxis of accounting for 'day visitor' behaviour in the Peak National Park : a qualititative investigation." Thesis, University of Derby, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10545/277392.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis considers how 'day visitors' to the Peak National Park construct accounts for their behaviour. It takes an inductive approach to the problem of 'day visits' as an under-researched topic within tourism and leisure studies. The thesis examines the discourses within tourism studies and in particular the ways in which notions of what it is to be a 'tourist' are constructed and used in tourism studies. Further it seeks to relocate the notion of tourism within the realm of ordinary social member's understandings, and therefore tourism becomes an object of study within everyday life. The thesis is particularly interested in the concept of motivation for tourism. Rather than regarding tourism motivation as a set of fixed 'needs' the study sets out to demonstrate the inherently social, locally managed and produced nature of motivation for tourism within everyday conversation about tourism. The empirical analysis is based on a small number of semi-structured, conversational interviews with people who had recently been on a 'day visit' to the Peak National Park. It was found that the respondents orient to the production of accounts of their experiences and accounts for their behaviour that served a number of functions. Accounts were found to allow members to construct notions of identity as a resource to achieve credibility in their accomplishment of 'day visitor' experiences in talk. This study considers how 'being a tourist' is accomplished or resisted by the respondents in their talk. Identity construction is also considered in relation to the accomplishment of spatial practice in accounting for 'day visitor' behaviour.

Abstract:
Utifrån syfte och frågeställningar valdes mätinstrumentet Flow State Scale-2 (FSS-2). Litteratursökning gjordes i bibliotekskatalogen tillhörande Umeå Universitet.

Full text
Abstract:
The objectives in the study were to examine: (1) factors that contributes to successful athletic performance across career stages; (2) factors that contributes to poor athletic performance across career stages. The theoretical frameworks included: model of psychological preparation for peak performance (Hardy, Jones, &amp; Gould, 1996); the developmental model on transitions faced by athletes (Wylleman &amp; Lavallee, 2004). Ten participants took part of the study (N=10) and consisted of five individual sport athletes and five team sport athletes from local to international competitive level. Semi-structured interviews were conducted derived from the semi-structured interview guide specially created for this study, which was based on the theoretical frameworks. The results are presented in three parts, and 8 category profiles describing the factors contributing to successful and poor athletic performance on the initiation-, development-, mastery- and maintenance stage. The results showed a list of factors contributing to both successful and poor athletic performance across different career stages for example, social support, family, coach, teammates, athletic ability, athletic experience and, athletic achievements. The results also showed that the factors seems to play a different role depending on the different athletic career stage for instance, supportive significant others and sporting environment turned out to be a more important contributing factor to athletes successful athletic performance on the initiation stage, where athletic ability turned out to be a more important contributing factor to athletes successful athletic performance on the mastery stage. The results are discussed based on the theoretical frameworks and previous research. Suggestions on future research and implications are given.<br>Syftena med föreliggande studie var att undersöka: (1) faktorer som bidrar till framgångsrika idrottsprestationer genom idrottskarriären, (2) faktorer som bidrar till dåliga idrottsprestationer genom idrottskarriären. De teoretiska ramverk som ingår i studien är: model of psychological preparation for peak performance (Hardy, Jones, &amp; Gould, 1996); the developmental model on transitions faced by athletes (Wylleman &amp; Lavallee, 2004).

Hussein, Hadi, and Rebecca Lindström. "Slutet gott allting gott? Peak-end rule och användarupplevelsen av ett webbformulär." Thesis, Umeå universitet, Institutionen för psykologi, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-184028.

Abstract:
Central is that they should meet the user's needs – not least the user's feelings and experiences. According to previous research, strong emotional moments during the course of events and the experience of its end can affect how we assess previous experiences (Kahneman, Fredrickson, Schreiber &amp; Redelmeier, 1993; Redelmeier, Katz &amp; Kahneman, 2003). The purpose of this study was to investigate whether peak-end rule has an effect on the retrospective user experience of a digital interface. This is done by comparing two versions of a prototype whose interaction was intended to resemble a form on a web page. The two versions were identical except that the ending was manipulated in one version in order to evoke a positive ending and a neutral ending in the other version. A total of 22 participants rated their overall user experience after interacting with each version. They then answered questions regarding the choice of preference and perceived effort. The results showed that the peak-end rule had a significant influence on the choice of preference. On the other hand, there was no evidence to suggest that the overall user experience or perceived effort was affected by the design of the end. This means that the end of an interaction can affect the user experience to a certain extent, but that at the same time there is a certain ambiguity about the result. The study of peak-end rule is still in an early phase within the field of human-computer interaction. Further research is thus required for a better understanding of its effect on the user experience of interactive systems.

Skalski, Jonathan Edward. "The Epistemic Qualities of Quantum Transformation." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2009. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/2258.

Full text
Abstract:
Growth and development are central constituents of the human experience. Although the American Psychological Association aims to understand change and behavior in ways that embrace all aspects of experience (APA, 2008), sudden, life-altering or quantum transformation has been disregarded throughout the history of psychology until recently (see Miller & C' de Baca, 1994, 2001). Quantum transformation is similar to self-surrender conversion (James, 1902), but different from peak experiences (Maslow, 1964) and near death experiences (Lorimer, 1990) because quantum transformation, by definition, involves lasting change. Quantum transformation contains epistemic qualities, which refer to the content and process of knowing (Miller & C' de Baca, 2001), but little is known about these qualities. The current study employed a qualitative method to better understand the epistemic qualities of quantum transformation. Fourteen participants were extensively interviewed about their experience. Analysis involved hermeneutic methods (Kvale, 1996) and phenomenological description (Giorgi & Giorgi, 2003). Quantum transformation is essentially a process of knowing that unfolded in the form of Disintegration, Insight, and Integration in the present study. First, Disintegration is presented by themes of Overwhelming stress, Relational struggle, Hopelessness, Holding-on, Control, Psychological turmoil, Self-discrepancy, and Guilt. Second, Insight is presented by the Content and Tacit knowing of the experience. Third, Integration is presented by Changes in values, Other-orientation, and A process of development. The results suggest that the disintegration and the suffering that characterizes the pre-transformation milieu inform how quantum transformation relates to lasting change. Therapists that automatically aim to alleviate moral-emotional sorrow or guilt should consider whether the emotional experience can bring about positive transformation. Overall, quantum transformation has potentially major implications for our understanding of personality change and moral development.

Abstract:
From the claims of punk rocker GG Allin aiming to shed his own blood for Rock ‘n’ Roll to the religiously tinted narratives of Bruce Springsteen we come to find artists using religious references to color their artistic medium. A question arises: Could these utterances and narratives show a deeper meaning behind Rock ‘n’ Roll such that it can give individuals a way to obtain religious experience? This thesis aims at arguing for the ability of Rock ‘n’ Roll as having a way to incite feelings of religious experience and communitas. Through the usage of auto-ethnography coupled with subsidiary sources from academic to pop culture writers this thesis will investigate if such a creative form helps to enable individuals to experience transcendence and feelings of community while immersed in Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Johnston, Margaret E. "Peak experiences: Challenge and danger in mountain recreation in New Zealand." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Geography, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/4640.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the place of risk in mountain recreation in New Zealand. Risk is defined as a situation with positive and negative outcomes, and uncertainty as to their occurrence. The conceptual framework of this thesis deviates from the usual geographic approach to risk - the natural hazards paradigm - and develops an approach which elucidates the context, experience and management of risk. The experience of risk is an interaction of people and environment in which positive outcomes (i.e. challenge) are sought and negative outcomes (i.e. danger) may occur. Both the positive and negative aspects of risk are examined in this thesis, with emphasis on the relationship between them. This research explores the ways in which risk is viewed, accepted and experienced. It investigates the historically and locationally specific development of the risk management framework in New Zealand within which the individual, subculture and society have pursued target levels of risk. The ways in which the individual, subculture and society have interacted to create that framework is emphasized. These ideas are explored in both historical and contemporary contexts through four main sources of information. The mountain recreation literature was used to elaborate the ways in which the risk management framework evolved along with the changing mix of participants and activities undertaken. New forms of management at subcultural and societal levels emerged in response to changes in the way mountain recreation was viewed and experienced by individuals. One important indicator of such change was the fatality picture. Accidents are both a product of recreation behaviour and an influence on it. For this reason a detailed study was made of the mountain recreation fatalities, primarily through coroners' reports. This provided links to the wider experience and development of mountain recreation. The mountain recreation literature regarding the occurrence of accidents, either singly or in aggregate, outlines some of the parameters specifying subcultural and societal ideas about risk. To obtain an in depth view of the place of risk in the experiences of current day recreationists a questionnaire survey of 915 skiers, hunters, day walkers, trampers and climbers was undertaken, and personal interviews with eighteen recreationists took place. Their experiences with both positive and negative aspects of risk were explored, as was behaviour with implications for risk management. The conceptual approach adopted for this research, with its focus on positive and negative aspects of risk, the actual experience of risk, and the context of risk as an accepted and sought after element of mountain recreation enables the comprehensive exploration of risk situations. This has provided the elucidation of individual, subcultural and societal interactions, in historical and contemporary perspectives, with regard to the management of risk in mountain recreation.

Ménard, Amy D. "Contributors to Optimal Sexual Experiences." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/23995.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to identify the contributors to optimal sexual experiences. At present, there is a lack of clinical knowledge, research knowledge and in-depth public discourse concerning the nature of healthy sexuality. The theoretical and research literature in this area has focused almost exclusively on defining and conceptualizing sexual dysfunctions with little attention paid to either normal or satisfactory experiences. Very little theory exists on the nature and components of optimal sexuality. To date, no empirical investigations have been done to determine the contributors to optimal sexual experiences. In order to identify the contributors to optimal sexual experiences, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 individuals who reported having experienced “great sex”. A phenomenologically-oriented content analysis was performed on interview transcripts to determine the contributors to optimal sexual experiences. Analysis led to the identification of seven major contributors, two pathways towards optimal sexual experiences and two minor contributors. The major contributors included developmental contributors, individual qualities overall, individual qualities in-the moment, skills, relationship qualities overall, relationship qualities in-the-moment and environmental, situational and preparatory contributors. Each of these larger themes was also characterized by a variety of more specific themes. The two pathways that led to optimal sexual experiences included individual qualities that facilitated relationship qualities and relationship qualities that facilitated individual qualities. Finally, the minor contributors consisted of personal proclivities and miscellaneous contributors. Noteworthy findings of this investigation are discussed and then compared and contrasted with existing research and theory. The implications of this work for the general public, sex therapy, sex education, theory and research are considered as well as the strengths and limitations of this study.

Myhill, Claire. "A Foucauldian Discourse Analysis of Professional South African Ballet Dancers’ Subjective Performance Experiences." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/64120.

Full text
Abstract:
Extensive research into the lives of professional ballet dancers has been conducted by the psychological and medical fields, but much of this research has focused on problems in the environment, sometimes in a way that further pathologizes dancers. Professional ballet is a highly demanding performance area, yet little research into ballet dancers’ performance lives has been conducted, which further shapes perceptions about this population. This study explores how South African professional ballet dancers’ performance lives are shaped by discourse, and how they draw on available discursive resources to construct their subjectivity and create meaning, and to what ends, in relation to performance. Findings suggest that dancers are caught up in several powerful, dominant discourses, some of which may position them in ways that cause subjective harm, but that alternatives do exist. Insights into the complex web of intersecting discourses surrounding ballet are offered, and questions posed to create possibilities, but ultimately, dancers must decide which positions they want to claim or resist, as they continually form their subjectivities.<br>Mini Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2017.<br>Psychology<br>MA Counselling Psychology<br>Unrestricted

Abstract:
Listening to music usually elicits emotions that can vary considerably in their intensity over the course of listening. Yet, after listening to a piece of music, people are easily able to evaluate the music's overall emotional intensity. There are two different hypotheses about how affective experiences are temporally processed and integrated: (1) all moments' intensities are integrated, resulting in an averaged value; (2) the overall evaluation is built from specific single moments, such as the moments of highest emotional intensity (peaks), the end, or a combination of these. Here we investigated what listeners do when building an overall evaluation of a musical experience. Participants listened to unknown songs and provided moment-to-moment ratings of experienced intensity of emotions. Subsequently, they evaluated the overall emotional intensity of each song. Results indicate that participants' evaluations were predominantly influenced by their average impression but that, in addition, the peaks and end emotional intensities contributed substantially. These results indicate that both types of processes play a role: All moments are integrated into an averaged value but single moments might be assigned a higher value in the calculation of this average.

Abstract:
Quality is the key to a well executed product or service. The construction industry hasn’t highlighted the quality in recent times which have contributed to the construction industry receiving much criticism in the field. The public sees it as an offhanded industry where errors and delays are common. The reason for this is considered to be primarily the lack of time, constant pressure to reduce costs and skills and the ability to communicate between the parties about what the correct quality really means. The industry has begun to realize that it must start setting clearer standards and that there are great opportunities for improvement. This report will give Peab an opportunity to develop their quality work. The report highlights Peab residential area of Stockholm market position with the current quality of subcontractors and suppliers. It also provides suggestions on how Peab in a better way can work with quality and with this becoming a more competitive player in the market. The conclusions that can be drawn from this study is that Peab is aware of the problem and has begun work on improvements to enhance quality of work. Peab, for example, developed tools for gathering experience. Unfortunately these methods were used poorly and not to the degree that is required. Peab also works with partnering, based on long term business relationships. Correct use of partnering increases the chances of higher quality in the projects. Concrete proposals for improvements that this report highlights include higher standards in the procurement process, dare make demands on the quality of subcontractors and suppliers, learn from the mistakes made and disseminate the knowledge within the Group and work with long-term business relationships in which partners can develop one another .

Abstract:
It means that thoughtful planning becomes a more important factor in reducing waste costs and achieving efficient production and good quality. A tool to achieve this is work preparation. Work preparation is a concept that, through planning, facilitates the performance of an activity. To achieve the desired result and quality, the choice of the performance method, workforce, materials, machines and other tools must be decided in good time before the work begins. The purpose of this graduate project is to make a status analysis of how Peab's work preparations are used in production. Identify errors or deficiencies and to investigate the possibility of streamlining. The objective is to get the work preparation more efficient and to suggest improvements. The study has been made in cooperation with Peab Region middle and the current building projects in Karlstad in spring 2017. It comprises a case study (on/at Talldungen preschool) and an interview study where site managers, supervisors and construction workers have been interviewed. The result shows that Peab has a structured work preparation and that the employees find the toolset useful. Working preparation clarifies requirements and any questions can be resolved before the start of the activity. During the preparation, the construction workers actively participate and can influence the choice of working methods, machines and tools. This results in a positive attitude and is perceived to provide better teamwork. One reoccurring problem is that time for work preparation is not prioritized, which means that the follow-up after a completed activity becomes insufficient and the documentation is often missing. Based on the conclusions drawn from the analysis, education, a bank of experience and also a drawing and instructional station are recommended as arrangements. Peab should be better at informing the employees about the available tools and should also be investing in developing the use of BIM.

Abstract:
Por fim, destacamos a importância de assumirmos a experiência formadora como forma de qualificar a formação de professores.<br>The world of everyday life is the here and now of human relations, and presents itself to our interpretation of the interpretation, and where they forge their formative experiences. The thesis examines the life world of teachers-students of the Course Undergraduate Education in Distance mode offered by the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, between the years 2006 to 2010, to identify and analyze the formative experiences of teaching in relation to the trajectories of the subjects involved in the training process. The main concepts of the thesis is the world of everyday life, from the perspective of Alfred Schütz, formative experience, according to Marie-Christine Josso and ciber-sociality, in the perspective of André Lemos. World of everyday life is the space of human relationships we establish daily, the emerging reality of our experiences, and where they forge reflective schemes of consciousness to the point of transforming an experience into an experience that demarcates the meaning and trajectory of a subject. Formative Experience constitutes the ability to create and recreate, in the scope of training, the meanings of what was learned: learned to do, to be and to think. The ciber-sociality relates to the experience of everyday life made present in the relationships that emerge in the network society. The field research was conducted in two stages: the first, a quantitative approach, investigates the time-use of teachers-students and maps their everyday life. In the second stage analyzes the formative experiences of teaching, from the selection of routine-synthesis profiles of typical and atypical of the population analyzed, totaling eight subjects. The formative experiences were analyzed from the portfolios of the teachers-Learning course participants, retrieving memories-reference from their itineraries individual experiences. Regarding the mapping of everyday teachers, teacher students observe a daily marked by a large contingent of occupations, which reduces the time for leisure and personal care in that it increases the time of study. The imperative of gender demarcating relations. We consider it necessary to develop public policies aimed at training teachers considering training as part of paid work. Regarding formative experiences we analyze in depth the records and realized that they necessarily relate to the world of everyday life of each teachers-students, surpassing the boundaries of the university and the school. Memories-reference presented composed a list of formative experiences highlighted for these subjects. Insofar as the eight subjects respond to the syntheses of recognitions of the population analyzed in the course HDPE / UFRGS, pointed the experiences discussed above as the formative experiences of teaching for teachers, teacher students HDPE / UFRGS. Finally, we highlight the importance of formative experience as we assume the possibility of qualifying teacher training.

Abstract:
There are different ways of evaluating experiences lived across time. The --hedometer' paradigm in economics suggests that momentary impressions determine overall evaluations of experiences. There is a mounting empirical evidence for a simple Peak-End rule. Peak (the most extreme) and End (the very last) impressions have been shown to explain overall evaluations without the need to account for other impressions. I test the Peak-End rule using field data from university classrooms and lab data from image-viewing experiments, as well as explore its ability to predict post-experience mood valence. I elicit, using a novel guessing task, lay intuitions about overall evaluations of experiences. Finally, I demonstrate why decision-makers may find it difficult to learn the Peak-End rule and believe rather, that overall evaluations reflect average impressions.

Abstract:
[EN] This thesis presents several proposals aimed at improving video transmission through the DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) standard. This research work studies the DASH transmission protocol and its characteristics. At the same time, this work proposes the use of encoding with constant quality and variable bitrate as the most suitable video content encoding mode for on-demand content transmission through the DASH standard. Based on the proposal to use the constant quality encoding mode, the role played by adaptation algorithms in the user experience when consuming multimedia content becomes more important. In this sense, this thesis presents an adaptation algorithm called Look Ahead which, without modifying the standard, allows the use of the information on the sizes of the video segments included in the multimedia containers to avoid making adaptation decisions that lead to undesirable stalls during the playback of multimedia content. In order to evaluate the improvements of the presented adaptation algorithm, three models of objective QoE evaluation are proposed. These models allow to predict in a simple way the QoE that users would have in an objective way, using well-known parameters such as the average bitrate, the PSNR (Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio) and the VMAF (Video Multimethod Assessment Fusion). All of them applied to each segment. Finally, the DASH behavior in Wi-Fi environments with high user density is analyzed. In this context, there could be a high number of stalls in the playback because of a bad estimation of the available transfer rate due to the ON/OFF pattern of DASH download and to the variability of the access to the Wi-Fi environment. To relieve this situation, a coordination service based on SAND (MPEG's Server and Network Assisted DASH) is proposed, which provides an estimation of the transfer rate based on the information of the state of the clients' players.<br>Belda Ortega, R. Abstract:
Planning of material handling in limited spaces has become more relevant in the construction industry and since material cannot always be delivered at the right time in the right place, a delay in the flow chain is created. Each construction site has unique conditions and thus different solutions. In this thesis, four workplaces at Peab have been visited and inspected. The purpose of the thesis was to explore the problems that arise with the logistics in a limited space and find solutions that can be implemented on future construction projects. The aim of the study was to find the common factors that exist for the workplaces within a small area and find ways of working that can change the planning and execution of logistics.Surveys to professional workers and interviews with site managers and supervisors contributed with information to the report. After compiling the thesis work, the result shows that there are opportunities to change the working method of the work management to increase efficiency and productivity. In the study, it appears that there is a lack of communication in the workplaces as a large number of workers do not know when the next delivery of material takes place. In addition, the professional workers admit that they did not have a great influence over the business. Recommended solutions that were developed in the study were experience feedback and further development of the APD plan.

Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is to investigate the preferences of individuals for the management of upland landscapes in the UK. Environmental valuation techniques are becoming an increasingly important tool in the development of environmental management policy, however, they are not without their detractors. In particular a school of thought, developed from the work of Bentham, takes issue with the behavioural foundations of the dominant welfare economic doctrine which underpins many of the valuation techniques commonly adopted. They identify that heuristic rules, experience and memory can all play a role in the development of ‘value’ for a good. This thesis aims to investigate the roles of these, along with the role of association with an environmental good, in the development of value for upland landscapes using the Peak District National Park as a case study. This objective is developed in three parts. Part I introduces the topic, identifies the background of research against which this thesis is presented and introduces the case study. This part also attempts to identify how well the complex economy – ecology interactions in this landscape are understood by stakeholders. It shows that, given the complexities of the systems, there are key omissions in stakeholder knowledge and understanding. Part II uses Discrete Choice Experiments to analyse the impact on value of experience, memory, heuristics and association. A series of experiments are applied to the same landscape characteristics in order to achieve this. The results show that value can be impacted in a number of ways with implications for the development of future valuation studies. This thesis concludes with a discussion of the policy implications, limitations and future work associated with this research.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣師範大學<br>教育心理與輔導學系<br>96<br>The purpose of this study was to understand the peak experience from the perspective of the Zen meditation experience. Through meditators’ different experiences, a variety of aspects of the peak experience could be reexamined and we may further discover their essence. On one hand, we expect to clarify public myths toward the peak experience. On the other hand, we hope this issue receives more attention in academia. We adopt hermeneutic phenomenology as the methodology of this study. The transcripts of conversation recording from eight Zen Mediators were analyzed, and the results were as follows: 1) All of the peak experience, the plateau experience and the Zen meditation experience descend from the same origin. They both expect that human beings should weaken the boundary of ‘ego’ and focus on ‘Self’. However, we still need to know that the peak experience do not equal to the Zen meditation experience. There were differences which existed in the depth and the width between the two experiences. This study provided more details about Zen meditation experience than peak experience in previous studies. 2) There were no fixed images of the peak experience. The multiple states proposed in previous literatures should be regarded as temporary phenomena or statistic data, but not the Reality. 3) The trigger was not necessary for approaching the peak experience. Therefore, those essentially the same activities such as Yoga and Tai-chi chuan, are also helpful for the transform of the body and soul and realizing the essence of peak experience. 4) The essence of the peak experience lied in the idea of ‘self-transcendence’. The nature of peak experience was for validating the world view and humanity view of transpersonal psychology . That is, we try to be aware of the existence of ‘Self’, to achieve the goal of ‘self-actualization’, and to further reach for ‘self-transcendence’. We go beyond the temporary ‘ego’ and accomplish ‘Real Self’.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to explore and describe the experiences of diabetes mellitus patients at the Piggs Peak Hospital in Swaziland, from the time of diabetes diagnosis to living with diabetes, adherence to treatment and implementing diabetes self-care. A descriptive, exploratory, contextual qualitative research was conducted. Data was gathered through semi-structured interviews with 26 participants purposively selected on diabetes days at the hospital. Data was analysed qualitatively. Results revealed that patients present late for diagnosis. Being diagnosed causes psychological distress of varying intensity and duration. Hospital visits are burdensome due to financial and transport challenges, as well as service shortcomings. Self-care activities are difficult due to financial challenges and nonconducive social circumstances at home. Social support is lacking. Diabetes patients fear insulin use and prefer oral tablets. It is concluded that diabetes self-care is burdensome for most patients of the PPH in Swaziland. The service providers, stakeholders, and government need to explore strategies for mitigating effects of various barriers to self-care as revealed in this study.<br>Health Studies<br>M.A. (Public Health)

Abstract:
Sudden personal transformation (SPT) was defined as a subjectively reported, positive, profound, and lasting personal change that follows a relatively brief and memorable inner experience. Although such change has been described in numerous biographies, works of fiction, and religious and scholarly texts, a consistent definition and systematic program of research is lacking in the psychological literature. Moreover, almost nothing is known about what causes such change from the subjective point of view of individuals who have experienced it first hand. This study used semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis to explore the common beliefs of three participants about the factors that facilitated and the mechanisms that caused their SPT. Findings reveal that all participants reported a life transition, feeling miserable, feeling exhausted, feeling unable to resolve adverse circumstances, reaching a breaking point, and support from others facilitated their individual SPT’s. All participants also indicated that a formalized activity or ceremony as well as a process outside of their conscious control (either a higher power or a deep inner wisdom) produced or caused their SPT’s. Implications for future research and counselling practice are discussed.<br>Graduate

Hummel, Crystal D. "Using appreciative inquiry to describe and create teacher peak experiences: a case study of elementary school teachers." Diss., 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10057/1075.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to describe the peak experiences of teachers while teaching and the necessary ecological conditions for them to enter into a peak experience state. Due to limited research on the study of peak experiences as it relates to teaching, this study sought to describe the peak experiences of teachers through the teachers’ personal reflections back on their peak experiences, and it sought to understand the conditions that allowed these teachers to enter into a peak experience state. The basic design of this study was a qualitative case study conducted through an appreciative inquiry theoretical perspective and a humanistic psychology perspective. An appreciative inquiry theoretical perspective is an action research inquiry process designed to help participants identify their achievements and strengths and allows people to think deeply about their human potential. Participants were guided through three Appreciative Inquiry stages to include discover, dream, and design. Descriptive field notes were taken and information was gathered from varying perspectives. Volunteers were asked to participate in various data collection methods to include semi-structured interviews, semi-structured paired-interviews, focus groups, participant created documents, and generative story telling to support cross-validation and triangulation. Data were analyzed using the comparative analysis matrix method (Miles and Huberman, 1994). Data were also analyzed using the text analysis software CATPAC as a filter to facilitate a deeper level of content analysis. Data were compared, conceptualized, and categorized through content analysis, pattern matching, and an open coding process. After open coding, connections and categories were developed through an axial coding method (Strauss and Corbin, 1990). All analyzed data were used to aggregate common information and identify new insights into perceptions of teachers regarding peak experiences in a teaching and learning context (Guba and Lincoln, 1981). The analyzed data revealed five salient findings: (1) The appreciative inquiry experience allowed participants to identify and create peak experiences and to discover the ecological conditions necessary for them to enter into a peak experience state, (2) the appreciative inquiry process allowed the participants to recognize the importance of connecting with each other and students, (3) the appreciative inquiry process allowed the participants to identify intrinsic needs, (4) the appreciative inquiry process allowed people to validate themselves and others as worthwhile people, and (5) the appreciative inquiry experience identified the importance of recalling and sharing peak experience stories. All of the findings suggested that the appreciative inquiry process has the potential to alter patterns of teacher behavior, which in turn affects organizational culture. Using an AI theoretical research perspective in this research study empowered and energized teachers in life-changing, transformational ways to positively affect a teaching and learning context. The findings from this study have the potential to contribute to the areas of study that focus on effective teaching. This research provided an expanded understanding of peak experiences through an AI design to facilitate teachers in describing personal experiences of peak experiences in a teaching and learning context.<br>Thesis (Ed.D.)--Wichita State University, College of Educarion, Dept. of Educational Leadership

Therapeutic Assessment (TA) is a hybrid of assessment and therapy techniques in which assessors actively collaborate with clients during an individualized assessment. TA is centered around client assessment questions and provides a safe environment where clients can create shifts in their ‘story’ of self. More specifically, TA with children and their parents has demonstrated more confident parenting and parents’ better understanding of their child’s difficulties, while children have shown decreased problem behaviors and improved social/emotional functioning. The theoretical framework behind TA emphasizes the importance of the interpersonal interactions between the assessor and client, such as the development of a strong assessor client relationship and collaboration. These interpersonal processes are conceptualized as catalysts for greater depth of parent investment in the assessment and deeper levels of feedback results. The need for greater parent involvement and partnership in child mental health services is increasingly recognized in the client/parent satisfaction literature. Parent feedback to child mental health services is most often acquired through satisfaction questionnaires. However, the satisfaction literature has well known limitations, specifically a lack of unifying theory and methodological issues in scale development. Parent satisfaction research indicates that interpersonal experiences are more related to satisfaction than outcomes or client characteristics, and that more psychometrically sound measures are needed. Currently, satisfaction surveys do not provide a detailed understanding of parents’ experiences to inform practice and research. The current study outlines the development of the Parent Experience of Assessment Scale (PEAS). The PEAS is anchored in the theoretical orientation of TA and provides a more quantifiable measure of hypothesized underlying TA constructs. Moreover, the development of the PEAS uses advanced statistical techniques, such as Confirmatory Factor Analysis and invariance testing, to provide a higher level of psychometric rigor. The resulting scale consists of 24 items divided among 5 subscales with demonstrated relationships to general satisfaction. Structural equation modeling provides insight via direct and indirect effects among the PEAS subscales and their relationship to general satisfaction. Through the development of the PEAS, this study provides empirical evidence and support for TA theory and a more nuanced understanding of parent experiences related to satisfaction.<br>text

碩士<br>國立雲林科技大學<br>休閒運動研究所碩士班<br>99<br>This study aims to investigate the perceptions, impact, and expectations of five participants who have climbed top one hundred mountains in Taiwan. With the semi-structured interview, the research explores the change of the attitude towards the ecological environment in the forests and mountains after such substantial input of time and effort, as well as the awareness to the environment and the expectations for the future mountain-climbing activities. The results reveal a change of the attitudes of the participants towards the forest environment in Taiwan after the mountain-climbing activity. The findings are as follows. While participants maintain a negative viewpoint to some popular and general routes, they have high appreciation towards the beautiful scenery. Those who have developed the climbing habit possess a deeper affection to the forests and are willing to care for and to protect them. They all thought that human waste and the leftover should take out from the mountains is impossilbe, and there is still room for the improvement of the environmental education. This ecological experience brings us to reflect upon the beauty of the Taiwan mountains, the motivation of mountain-climbing, the attitudes and responsibilities of the mountain guide and leader, as well as the respect to the mountains and Mother nature. The expectations include appropriate attitudes and behaviors for mountain-climbing, and with the practical experiences, to better advise the mountain-climbing practitioners and the government.

碩士<br>國立臺北教育大學<br>體育學系碩士班<br>100<br>Athletes often experience each technical practice, physical training and competition for more than just a process on the athletic field; there are more experiences overlooked and considered insignificant by others while many athletic experiences and stories occur in the psychological dimension and physiological emotions unseen by most people. The study aimed to reflect the significance of the table tennis experience for national junior team players. The study adopted a self-narrative research method to write about the peaks and valleys of author’s own experiences as a former Taiwan National Junior Table Tennis Team Player, discussing ‘how table tennis experience becomes “an experience”?’and the “what values can this athletic experience be?”. The following findings were discovered from this study: (1) My own athletic experiences, the interaction of views from others people which I have long neglected now implies great significance of experiences, whereas the evaluation and views from the coach, teammates and students have inconspicuously interacted with my own experience. As it turns out, the continuity an interaction of experiences are inseparable from each other. (2) There were three dimensions of this experiences’ meaning, namely 1. Existence Significance: The seemingly short-term athletic career has accompanied me through the most period of my table tennis life, while each chapter of past life has contributed to my current accomplishment. 2. Knowledge significance is the important source of knowledge from the coach to the athletes because I have been instructed with the technique of forehand attack from the coach. 3. Value Significance: It is one rare opportunity and priceless treasure for table tennis experience and priceless treasure.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立新竹教育大學<br>人資處體育碩士專班<br>98<br>The purpose of this study was to understand visitors’ socio-demographics, place attachment, recreation experience and recreation satisfaction at Hsinchu City Eighteen Peaks Mountain. The researcher also tried to find out the relationships among degree of perceived visitors’ socio-demographics, place attachment, recreation experience and recreation satisfaction and applied the findings to evaluate recreation service quality at Hsinchu City Eighteen Peaks Mountain. Subjects were Hsinchu City Eighteen Peaks Mountain visitors who were 12 years old and older. The study conducted convenience sampling process to collect data. Questionnaire survey was used as research instrument of this study. There were 540 questionnaires delivered and totally 525 valid questionnaires were received. The response rate was 97.2%. The researcher conducted descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test, one-way ANOVA, scheffe post hoc test, simultaneous regression, stepwise regression to analyze the data. Based on the results, primary visitors were males; age were mainly distributed in 31 to 40 years old; the level of education regarded more in university; the occupation were the students at most; monthly incomes were from NT 20,001 to 40,000; and residency were almost in the Hsinchu County. Most visitors had visited this area at least 3 times. It showed that the revisit visitors' ratio was high. Most visitors came to visit with companions who were family members and the relatives. The visitors spent about 2 to 3 hours at Hsinchu City Eighteen Peaks Mountain. Result of the questionnaires showed that Socio-demographics had some significant differences in the place attachment, recreation experience and recreation satisfaction. In this study, the visitors perceived higher degree of place attachment in “place identity” and “place dependence”. The visitors perceived higher degree of recreation experience in “psychological experience” and “physiological experience”. The visitors perceived higher degree of recreation satisfaction in “physiological satisfaction” and “relaxed satisfaction”. By multiple regression analysis, the major results of this research could be summarized as followed: Place attachment positively affected recreation satisfaction and the “place dependence” more than “place identity”. Recreation experience positively affected recreation satisfaction and the “social experience” more than “psychological experience”. Both place attachment and recreation experience affected recreation satisfaction positively. In the part of place attachment, recreation satisfaction was mainly created by the “place identity” and “place dependence”. In the part of recreation experience, recreation satisfaction was mainly created by the “social experience” and “psychological experience”. Above the result of the study, the researcher suggested that administrative unit can widely establish different kinds of recreational facilities to attract a particular segment of visitors who were coming from other places. Besides, to make good use of the activities that Hsinchu County Government and Hsinchu City Government hold to attract more tourists from other places to participate. Management units could also implement health-related leisure activities to attract different age groups. Besides, we must clearly shape the local characteristics and let visitors know that they could get many different recreation experiences in this place. When planning facilities, it must be combined with this environment and design appropriate activities in order to satisfy the recreation experiences that visitors want to get. Finally, the future researchers could choose different seasons to investigate this place. They could also make comparative analysis between low and peak tourist seasons and expand its samples of research with qualitative research method, so that both qualitative and quantitative research could be done. In addition, they could use Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to explore the causality among variables simultaneously.
