Abstract:
This work is an inquiry into the creative pathways I have undertaken, as a screenplay author, when formulating a body of work, which interrogates issues of importance to me, as a Caucasian, Australian, multicultural, female author, writing within a fictional feature film script construct. It is an interdisciplinary investigation, punctuated by self consciousness. Mindful of my own subject position, I believe my negotiations through this, as reflected in the body of my past and present work, have created an original thesis which argues for the aesthetic, reconciliatory power of screenplays. In wishing to create a positive lead role for an Indigenous actress, I had to ultimately put aside reservations about my origins as a non-Indigenous screenwriter. As a screenplay author, I will demonstrate why I find it hard not to agree with Michel Foucault’s supposition that: “it is not enough to repeat the empty affirmation that the author has disappeared” (Foucault 101). The creative component of my thesis is a magic realist feature film script, entitled Shoalwater Pearl, written as a prequel to the two other enclosed film scripts largely written outside of this doctoral thesis, featuring the same lead character, Pearl. Pearl carries the weight of my self-consciousness, and through her, I reveal the creative pathways I simultaneously interrogate as I research theoretical issues of importance to me as a screenplay author. Faris could not have more aptly put it, regarding the magic realist aim, which I have adapted to my representation of Pearl, as, “a disturbing element, a grain of sand in the oyster of [. . .] realism” (Faris 168). The theoretical component of my thesis is interwoven with theories of Authorship and Representation including issues of Identity, Aboriginality, Multiculturalism and Gender to better document how my creative and theoretical pathways intertwine, followed by a short Conclusion, Bibliography and Filmography. The Chapter titles, ‘Authorship’ and ‘Representation’ are used advisedly, as it could be argued that they are controversial subjects. It will be revealed that none of these terms can be considered as stable or abiding. However, each chapter introduces its title as a methodological and normative term for a category or definition from which the chapter emerges. As a result of my interdisciplinary approach, I have posited an original pathway for other screenplay authors, who, whilst remaining mindful of marketplace interests, may also enter into identity politics or study social movements in order to create screenplays representing contentious aspects of cultural change in contemporary Australia, whilst paying homage to their own unresolved issues or unique life narratives.

Lerner, Stephen 1966. "Toronto's Pearson International Airport : airport commercializationprivatization." Thesis, McGill University, 1996. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=20156.

Abstract:
Government ownership of airports is inefficient and has led to large financial deficits in Canada. Terminals I and 11 at Pearson Airport are in desperate need of redevelopment. The Pearson Airport Agreements between the Federal Government and the Pearson Development Corporation ("PDC") to redevelop and operate Terminals I and II at Pearson Airport pursuant to a long term lease would have benefitted the Government through the receipt of the proceeds from the sale of the airports while being relieved of the burden of financing airport expansion. The cancellation of the Pearson Airport Agreements based on the faulty reasoning of the Nixon Report was contrary to the public interest.
The Canadian Government plans to "commercialize" Airports which involves leasing them to Airport Authorities. The federal government has reached an agreement on terms for transfer of Pearson Airport to the Greater Toronto Airport Authority ("GTAA"). Pearson airport will be one of the first airports to be transferred to local control under the Liberal governments Canadian Airport Authority model. Commercialization amounts to a transfer of Airports from one part of the public sector to another. It is plagued by many of the inefficiencies that characterize Government operated Airports.
Pearson Airport has significant market power. Pearson Airports market power can effectively be diffused by separating the airport's airside and groundside functions, and basing airside ownership on slots. Terminals I, II and III will be sold separately and will become the responsibility of several airport companies who will compete for Airlines and Passengers. Runways, taxiways and the apron would be owned and operated by a Corporation made up of investors and third party brokers.

Das, Bakshi Subhankar. "Wear of fine pearlite, nanostructured bainite and martensite." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2017. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/262770.

Full text
Abstract:
Abrasion is a form of wear prominent particularly in the agricultural, mining, mineral and transportation industries. The cost of abrasive wear to the national economy is estimated to be about 1% of the gross national product, and it can compromise the safety and reliability of engineering components. The mechanism of wear is complex and dependent on all the materials involved in the process, environmental conditions and many subtle factors such as the shape of the abrading particles. Many abrasion-resistant steels are based on a quenched and tempered martensitic microstructure, because the hardness of the steel should intuitively matter in determining the wear rate. Nevertheless, the relationship between the rate of material loss and steel hardness is unlikely to be monotonic. The purpose of the work presented in this thesis was primarily to study the abrasive wear behavior of a nanostructured bainitic steel that has been successful in structural applications, is capable of mass production, and can achieve hardness levels comparable to martensitic steels without compromising ductility, toughness and fatigue resistance. A variety of wear mechanisms have been studied, in each case with a detailed characterisation of the damage, the structural evolution and a panoply of theoretical approaches. In the case of three-body abrasion, it is found that huge variations in hardness, achieved by changing the structure from pearlite, nanostructured bainite to martensite by heat treatment, do not lead to significant differences in the wear rate. This is because the wear mechanisms change, for example from severe sub-surface deformation leading to sticking in the case of pearlite, to brittle detachment of material in the martensitic state. The nanostructured bainite, on the other hand, undergoes reaustenitisation at the surface that leads to the formation of a fine martensitic layer with consequent surface hardening, in contrast to the pearlite and martensite, both of which soften at the contact surfaces. It is the presence of stable austenite in the nanostructured bainite that causes this difference, because austenitisation becomes easier to achieve. This hypothesis has been further tested by eliminating the austenite from the nanostructured bainite. The experiments confirm that a reaustenitised layer no longer forms during three-body abrasion. The softening observed on martensitic samples also disappears when similar tests are done on tempered martensite, indicating the effect of the localised heat generated during dry abrasion on untempered martensite. In contrast to three-body abrasion using silica where the weight loss is insensitive to hardness, the nanostructured bainite outperforms most commercial alloys of equivalent hardness, and sometime even harder materials, during dry rolling/sliding wear. The mechanisms involved have been rationalised in terms of structural damage mechanisms, the development of beneficial residual stresses, and detailed changes in crystallite size and dislocation character as a function of rolling. It has, in general, been possible to rationalise the observed variations in different types of wear tests and micro- or nanostructures, and it is believed that the work will be of use in designing commercially important products.

Riehm, Derek J. "Kinetics of the pearlite to austenite reversion transformation." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/29739.

Full text
Abstract:
The pearlite-to-austenite reversion transformation kinetics under isothermal and continuous heating conditions in a eutectoid plain-carbon steel have been measured, using a dilatometric technique on a Gleeble 1500 Thermomechanical Simulator. The isothermal data was characterized in terms of the transformation start time at temperature for the onset of the P→ γ transformation, and in terms of the Avrami parameters n and b. Under the assumption that the P→ γ transformation was additive, the Scheil equation was applied to the measured isothermal transformation start data to predict the onset of the transformation on continuous heating, and the isothermal phase transformation kinetics were used to predict the continuous heating kinetics. It was found that the kinetic model significantly underpredicted the transformation start time during continuous heating. This was attributed to the large experimental error inherent in the estimation of the isothermal transformation start time, t[formula omitted]. The model's continuous heating kinetic predictions were excellent at low heating rates, but it tended to overpredict the kinetics at higher heating rates. The problem was traced to an observed difference between the measured temperature and the programmed temperature during the high heating rate tests. When the model was modified to incorporate the actual temperature profile, its prediction of the kinetics was considerably improved. Thus the austenite reversion transformation was concluded to be experimentally additive. An average Avrami n value of 2.2 suggested that austenite was nucleating on pearlite colony corners and edges. This conclusion was verified with optical and scanning electron microscopy. Previously published data, which indicated that the pearlite-to-austenite transformation is isokinetic, was found to be based on questionable assumptions. Metallographic information suggests, however, that the nucleation sites are saturated early in the reaction. Furthermore, the isothermal austenite formation data generated in this work was found to meet the effective site saturation criterion for additivity, implying that the austenitization process would be expected to be additive. The effect of starting microstructure was evaluated by performing isothermal and continuous heating tests on two different pearlitic microstructures. It was found that, in agreement with published results, the transformation rate varied in inverse proportion with the pearlite spacing and colony size.

Abstract:

Is China trying to build a String of Pearls in the Indian Ocean My hypothesis is that China is not looking to build large overseas military bases in the Indian Ocean. With the revolution in military affairs and improvements in C4ISR over the last twenty years, international military bases are no longer as critical to intelligence collection and force projection as they were during the 20th century. This reduces the necessity of overseas bases to primarily serve as logistics hubswhich can be contracted out to host countries and reduce/eliminate the need to establish large overseas military bases. This thesis attempts to prove this hypothesis by examining improvements in military capabilities that include satellites, open source intelligence, cyberspace, and unmanned vehicles. With these improvements established, this thesis examines three comparative case studies involving states that have decided to reduce their international maritime presence over the last twenty years. Finally, Chinese perceptions and behaviors are examined to determine whether China is operating according to a post-Mahan international force projection theory.

A robust estimation procedure for parametric regression models is proposed in the paper by assuming the error terms follow a Pearson type VII distribution. The estimation procedure is implemented by an EM algorithm based on the fact that the Pearson type VII distributions are a scale mixture of a normal distribution and a Gamma distribution. A trimmed version of proposed procedure is also discussed in this paper, which can successfully trim the high leverage points away from the data. Finite sample performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated by some extensive simulation studies, together with the comparisons made with other existing procedures in the literature.

John, Pearlie Marie. "A qualitative assessment of the insulation systems of medium voltage induction motors / Pearlie Marie John." Thesis, North-West University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/1358.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study is to qualitatively assess the insulation system's condition of medium voltage induction motors. In essence this aim of the research was to analyse and classify the data. The initial step was to understand the data. The literature review gives the background of the insulation system and the different tests done and its interpretations. The research methodology used has been explained along with description of the data. The aging of the insulation is a wide and complex topic, thus in this research the electrical aspects of the insulation were looked into and explained in detail. The data and the limitations of this study are also discussed. Data mining processes were used to gain insight into the data and the condition of the insulation system. The different stages of data mining are explained. The different stages are: identifying the problem, &tC1 understanding, data preparation and data analysis. An analysis was done using self-organizing maps, which is an unsupervised neural network technique. Hierarchical and K-mean clustering techniques were used to classify the data. The results of the different techniques were compared to an expert's assessment. The study is was an attempt to understand the condition of the insulation system and to classify the data according to its condition. A comparison was done between the different techniques used. The data was divided into four groups based on the voltage rating and class of insulation used in the motors. Good classification was obtained for three out of the four groups of data. In conclusion, the patterns in the different features of the data due to ageing were observed. The data was qualitatively assessed and classified into groups according to the deterioration of the insulation system using the classification techniques. Finally the results correlated well with the expert's assessment. In essence, the goals set for the research were achieved.

Abstract:

Hassanat, Fadi. "Evaluation of pearl millet forage." Thesis, McGill University, 2008. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=18698.

Full text
Abstract:
This research evaluated millet as forage source for ruminants. Four studies were conducted using two cultivars of forage millet [i.e. brown midrib (BM) and regular (RM)]. The first investigated the effect of seeding rate on yield, chemical composition and in vitro degradability of the two forage millet cultivars. Yield of RM was 56% more than BM due to taller plants and more tillers m-2. A 25% increase in yield as seeding rate increased from 5 to 10 or from 10 to 15 kg ha-1 was observed for two millet cultivars. Brown midrib millet contained 15% more CP, and 4, 13 and 31% less NDF, ADF and ADL than RM cultivar. In vitro DM digestibility was 10% higher in BM due to differences in chemical composition. The second study determined the effect of stage of development at harvest [i.e. vegetative (VS) and heading stage (HS)] on the two millet cultivars yield and cell wall composition in leaves and stems. Yield of BM was lower than that of RM at both stages of development. Concentrations of NDF, ADF and ADL were reduced in BM stems by 8, 16, and 58%, respectively, compared to RM stems. Leaves ADF and ADL concentrations were 6 and 49% less in BM than RM. Increase in fibre fractions with advancing stage of development was most pronounced in RM stems. Brown midrib trait affected cell wall structure of BM leaves and stems by increasing arabinose and xylose proportion as well as concentrations of ester- linked p-coumaric acid and ether-linked ferulic acids. Cell wall content of arabinose, xylose and glucose in leaves and stems, and phenolics in stems was higher at VS than at HS. This effect was more pronounced for stems of RM than BM. In situ DM and NDF disappearances were higher in leaves and stems of BM than RM and were higher in leaves and stems of millet harvested at VS than at HS. Lignin concentration had negative linear impact on in situ DM and NDF degradability. Ensilability of forage millet as affected by cultivar and stage of development at harvest was investigated
In situ DM et NDF

O'Kennedy, Martha Margaretha. "Genetic enhancement of pearl millet." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/49974.

Abstract:
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2004.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was toe stablish a reliable protocol for the production 0 f transgenic pearl millet as this will open new avenues for augmenting the gene pool of this crop. This was achieved by identifying a highly regenerabie genotype and optimisation of a tissue culture system, and biolistic protocol f or stable integration of selected transgenes. Both a negative, herbicide resistance selectable marker gene, bar, and a positive selectable marker gene, manA, were individually introduced in order to identify and establish a reliable transformation protocol. The optimised transformation protocol was then used to introduce an antifungal gene in the genome of pearl millet to enhance resistance to the biotrophic fungus Sclerospora graminicola. S. graminicola, an obligate oomycetous fungal phytopathogen, is the causal agent of downy mildew in pearl millet plants and a major constraint in the production of pearl millet. A single component of antifungal resistance was introduced into the genome of pearl millet, as preliminary work towards determining its role in the total plant defence system. The approach chosen was to introduce a hydrolytic enzyme, 13-1,3- glucanase, from Trichoderma atroviride (formerly T. harzianum), a soil-borne filamentous fungus, capable of parasitizing several plant pathogenic fungi. It was anticipated that introducing this glucanase gene from T. atroviride which degrades glucan in the fungal cell walls, would significantly contribute to the improvement of resistance against downy mildew. Constructs were prepared containing the gene (gluc78) encoding a 78 kDa beta-1,3- glucanase. The constructs were prepared containing the gluc78 gene driven either by a strong constitutive promoter (ubiquitin promoter, exon and intron) or a wound inducible promoter, the potato proteinase inhibitor ilK gene promoter. The wound inducible promoter includes either an AMV leader' sequence or the rice Act1 intron to obtain higher expression levels in the monocotyledonous plant. The transformation efficiency using the particle inflow gun and the herbicide resistance gene, bar, was improved from 0.02% on a MS based medium, to 0.19 or 0.72% with manA as selectable marker gene on MS or L3 based medium, respectively. However, individual experiments, introducing manA as selectable marker gene, resulted in frequencies of 1.2 and 3%. This translated to one transformation event per plate, which contains on average 31-35 pre-cultured immature zygotic embryos. This is the first report of t he successful introduction and expression of a 13-1,3-glucanase encoding gene from a biocontrol fungus not only under constitutive expression but also under wound inducible expression in a plant. Optimisation of genetic engineering of pearl millet, a cereal crop recalcitrant to transformation, and the introduction of an antifungal transgene, was accomplished in this study. Initial results hint that expression of this transgene enhances resistance to S. graminicola.

Abstract:
The simplex distribution, proposed by Barndor-Nielsen e Jørgensen (1991) is useful for modeling continuous data in the (0,1) interval. In this work, we developed the simplex regression model, considering ´ = h(X; ¯), where h(:; :) is an arbitrary function. We dened the residuals to this model and obtained asymptotic corrections to residuals of the type Ri. The rst correction proposed, was based in obtaining the asymptotic expression for the density of Pearson residuals, corrected to order O(n¡1). These residuals were dened in order to have the same distribution of true Pearson residuals. Simulation studies showed that the empirical distribution of the modied residuals is closer to the distribution of the true Pearson residuals than the unmodied Pearson residuals. The second one, considers the method of moments. Generally E(Ri) and Var(Ri) are dierent from zero and one, respectively, by terms of order O(n¡1). Using the results of Cox and Snell (1968), we obtained the approximate expressions of order O(n¡1) for E(Ri) and Var(Ri). A simulation study is being conducted to evaluate the proposed technique. We applied the techniques in two data sets, the rst one, is a dataset of ammonia oxidation, considering linear predictor and the other one was the percentage of dry matter in maize, considering linear predictor and nonlinear. The results obtained for the oxidation ammonia data indicated that the model considering linear predictor, tted well to the data, if we consider the exclusion of some possible inuential points. The proposed correction for the density of Pearson residuals, showed better results. Observing the results for the dry matter data, the best results were obtained for a model with a specied nonlinear predictor.

Abstract:
In this thesis, an analysis of Bitcoin, Monero price and volatility is conducted with respect to S&P500 and the VIX index. Moreover using Python, we computed correlation coefficients of nine cryptocurrencies with two different approaches: Pearson and Spearman from July 2016 -July 2018. Moreover the Pearson correlation coefficient was computed for each year from July2016 - July 2017 - July 2018. It has been concluded that in 2016 the correlation between the selected cryptocurrencies was very weak - almost none, but in 2017 the correlation increased and became moderate positive. In 2018, almost all of the cryptocurrencies were highly correlated. For example, from January until July of 2018, the Bitcoin - Monero correlation was 0.86 and Bitcoin - Ethereum was 0.82.

Abstract:
Objective. This thesis presents and compares, theoretically and empirically, two estimators of the intraclass correlation coefficient pI, defined as Pearson\'s pairwise intraclass correlation coefficient. The first is the \"natural\" estimator, obtained by Pearson\'s moment-product correlation for members of one class (rI) while the second was obtained as a function of components of variance (icc). Methods. Theoretical and empirical comparison of the parameters and estimators are performed. The theoretical comparison involves two definitions of the intrac1ass correlation coefficient pI as a measure of reliability (*) for two repeated measurements in the same class and the presentation of the technique of analysis of variance, as well as for the definition and interpretation of the estimators ri and icc. The empirical comparison was carried out by means of a Monte Carlo simulation study of pairs of correlated values according Pearson\'s pairwise correlation. The pairs of values follow a normal bivariate distribution, with correlation values and sample size previously fixed: n= 15, 30 e 45 and Pl = . Results. Bias and mean square error for the estimators were compared as well as the range of the intervals of confidence. The comparison shows that the bias of icc is always smaller than of rI This also applies to the mean square error. Conclusions. The icc is a better estimator, especially for n less than or equal to 15. For larger samples sízes (n 30 or more), the estimators produce results that are equal to the second decimal place. Abstract:
The Receiver Operating Characteristic curve (ROC) is frequently used in medical studies to assess the efficiency of a diagnostic test. There exists two different ways to model the curve theoretically: direct and indirect. The direct method consists of constructing the curve based on the observed data. This method is less appealing in that the curve obtained is not easily interpretable. In the indirect method, a distribution is assumed for both the diseased and non-diseased patients. The normal distribution has been used to model both types of patients owing to the ease of its manipulation. In this thesis, we propose the use of the Pearsonian system of distributions in order to select the distribution for the diseased and non-diseased patients. An approach using a Monte Carlo simulation provides a confidence band for the derived ROC. The approach is evaluated using normal, gamma and beta distributed data. It is also tested on a real data set. It is seen that the Pearson based estimation of the ROC is at least as accurate as the normal theory based approach and often superior. Key words : ROC curve, Pearson distribution, AUC, pAUC, trapezoidal rule, Mann-Whitney U-Stat, Monte-Carlo simulation.

Abstract:
In comparison to other Arab/Muslim women, Saudi women are underexamined and/or often misrepresented. This thesis resists Saudi women’s obscurity and sheds light on their struggle to overcome domination and achieve emancipation. It analyses Hilary Mantel’s Eight Months on Ghazzah Street (1988), Rajaa Alsanea’s Girls of Riyadh (2008), Zoe Ferraris’s trilogy, Finding Nouf (2009), City of Veils (2011), and Kingdom of Strangers (2012), and Alys Einion’s Inshallah (2014). The thesis examines the significance of pre- and post-9/11 political and social contexts of representations of women in Saudi Arabia, compares depictions of Western (English, Welsh, and American) and Saudi women, and scrutinizes the effect of genre (the Gothic, the thriller, detective fiction and Chick Lit) on representations of women in a Saudi context. It draws on Arab/Muslim feminism to assess the degree to which the novels reproduce or challenge prevailing discourses of gender and Orientalism. This thesis argues that, through their employment of genre, the writers examined highlight women’s injustices. It contends that, although the novels analysed indicate that white women are not less oppressed than Saudi women, they provide an Orientalist representation of Saudi Arabia as a fearful space. Finally, this thesis demonstrates that Alsanea is the only writer that provides Saudi self-representation. However, she falls into self-Orientalism by restricting her depiction of Saudi women to the social elite. This thesis sheds light on Western representations of women in Saudi Arabia, broadens the very limited number of feminist studies of Saudi women, paves the road for more studies of gender in Saudi Arabia and provides much-needed material for international scholars interested in investigating the lives of women in Saudi Arabia.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Food Technology))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the physical, chemical and sensory characteristics of non-alcoholic pearl millet beverage produced using isolated and purified cultures of bioburden lactic acid bacteria (LAB). Traditional non-alcoholic pearl millet beverage (TNAPMB) was produced through spontaneous fermentation. The slurry was fermented for 36 h at 37°C while monitoring the microbial growth at 3 h interval. LAB were grown on deMan, Rogosa and Sharpe agar and identified using Vitek 2 system. The initial numbers of LAB were 7.04 log cfu/ml and increased to 8.00 log cfu/ml after 21 h. The beverage was dominated by LAB and contaminants and their survival was in succession. LAB from the genera Leuconostoc, Pediococcus, Streptococcus and Enterococcus were the main fermenting species in TNAPMB. Pearl millet extract (PME) was produced by hydrating pearl millet flour (PMF) with water (1:10, PMF:Water). To the mixture sprouted rice flour (10%), ground ginger (10%) and pectin (0.6%) were added. Stable PME was used in the production of plain non-alcoholic pearl millet beverage (PNAPMB). PME was pasteurized at 98°C for 30 min, hot filled and cooled to 25°C. The fluid was inoculated with Leuconostoc mesenteroides, Pediococcus pentosaceus and Enterococcus gallinarum each at 0.05, 0.075 and 0.1%, respectively, using factorial design and fermented for 18 h at 37°C. The pH of the beverage ranged between pH 3.32 and pH 3.90. L. mesenteroides, P. pentosaceus, E. gallinarum, the interaction between L. mesenteroides and P. pentosaceus and the interaction between L. mesentoroides and E. gallinarum had a significant effect (p ˂ 0.05) on the pH of PNAPMB except the interaction between P. pentosaceus and E. gallinarum (p = 0.631). The total titratable acidity (TTA) of the beverage ranged from 0.50 to 0.72%. All cultures had a significant influence (p ˂ 0.05) on the TTA of the beverage with the exception of the interaction between L. mesenteroides and E. gallinarum (p = 0.102). However, Monte Carlo simulation showed that E. gallinarum caused an increase in the pH and a decrease in the TTA of the beverage. During fermentation, the pH of the beverage is desired to decrease while the TTA increases, hence E. gallinarum was removed. The interaction between L. mesenteroides and P. pentosaceus at 0.05% and 0.025%, respectively produced an acceptable PNAPMB with potential for commercialization. Furthermore, moringa supplemented non-alcoholic pearl millet beverage (MSNAPMB) was produced by adding 4% of moringa (Moringa oleifera) leaf powder extract during the production of PNAPMB. The physicochemical, nutritional, microbial (LAB) and sensory characteristics of the PNAPMB, MSNAPMB and TNAPMB were determined. LAB were significantly (p < 0.05) affected by the fermentation period and increased from 3.32 to 7.97 log cfu/ml and 3.58 to 8.38 log cfu/ml in PNAPMB and SNAPMB, respectively. The pH of PNAPMB decreased from pH 5.05 to pH 4.14 while the pH of MSNAPMB decreased from pH 5.05 to pH 3.65 during the 18 h fermentation. The growth of LAB during fermentation had a significant effect (p < 0.05) on the pH of the beverages. The TTA increased from 0.14 to 0.22% and increased from 0.17 to 0.38%, in PNAPMB and MSNAPMB, respectively. The TTA of the beverage was affected significantly (p < 0.05) by the 18 h of fermentation. The protein content was 1.62, 2.17 and 1.50% in PNAPMB, MSNAPMB and TNAPMB, respectively. PNAPMB sample was deemed acceptable in comparison to the MSNAPMB. The total colour difference (ΔE) was 5.91 and 10.60 in PNAPMB and MSNAPMB, respectively in comparison to the TNAPMB. Volatile compounds with beneficial effect such as anti-inflammatory and anti-pathogenic properties were identified in the beverages. Principal component analysis indicated that the variations in characteristics of PNAPMB and MSNAPMB could be explained using total fat, saturated fat, total sugar, ash, moisture, proteins, chroma (C), hue and b*. The results showed that isolated pure cultures could be used as starter cultures in the production of non-alcoholic cereal beverages at a commercial level with predictable quality and safety properties.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT ROBUSTNESS OF TWO FORMULAS TO CORRECT PEARSON CORRELATION FOR RESTRICTION OF RANGE by Dung Minh Tran Many research studies involving Pearson correlations are conducted in settings where one of the two variables has a restricted range in the sample. For example, this situation occurs when tests are used for selecting candidates for employment or university admission. Often after selection, there is interest in correlating the selection variable, which has a restricted range, to a criterion variable. The focus of this research was to compare Alexander, Alliger, and Hanges’s (1984) formula to Thorndike’s (1947) formula and population values using Monte Carlo simulation when the assumption of normal distribution is violated in a particular way. In both Thorndike’s and Alexander et al.’s correction formulas, values for the variances in the restricted and the unrestricted situations are required. For both formulas, the variance in restricted situations was a sample estimate. In the Monte Carlo simulation, the difference between the two approaches was that in Thorndike’s formula, the variance in the unrestricted situation was the population variance from the exogenous variable, whereas in Alexander et al.’s approach, the population variance was estimated based on the sample variance in the restricted situation. In the simulation, robustness situations were created from non-normal distributions for predicted group membership in a classification problem. As expected, Thorndike’s corrected correlation values were more accurate than Alexander et al.’s corrected correlation values, and Thorndike’s formula had a smaller standard error of estimates. Absolute values of the mean differences between the estimated and population correlations for Alexander et al.’s approach compared to Thorndike’s approach in robustness situations ranged from 1.37 to 2.15 larger. Nevertheless, Alexander et al.’s approach, which is based only on estimated variances, appears to be a worthwhile correction in most of the simulated situations with a few notable exceptions for non-normal distributions.

Abstract:
The effect of a single genetic mutation can vary greatly between different types of cells. The mutated gene may not be expressed in one tissue but may cause a devastating loss of function in another. To learn about disease mechanisms and generate novel therapies, genetic disorders must be studied in the types of cells where the mutations are most deleterious. Recently, scientists have begun manipulating cellular identity to create the cell types most affected by various genetic diseases. This dissertation describes the experience of generating reprogramming models for three genetic disorders: Ring 14 syndrome, Pearson syndrome, and Fanconi anemia.

In the field of behavioral biometrics, automatic off-line handwritten signature recognition stands out for its widespread acceptance in different market segments, such as Banks, Civil Registry Offices and Real State Agencies. Among the reasons why its use is widely stimulated are its ease of acquisition, once it does not depend on specific equipment, and its legal value when it is done by the author’s own handwriting. With the purpose of searching for alternative methods to proceed to its automatic verification, this essay tests out an approach based on Pearson Correlation Coefficient. The experiment was carried out through six steps; from the first to the third ones, there were used variations for feature extraction, without the assistance of a learning classifier. In the fourth experiment, there was used an artificial neural network as a classifier, in order to compare its results with those obtained in the previous tests. In the fifth experiment, a weight associated to the threshold results obtained in the previous experiments was added, so as to minimize the false positive rate. In the sixth and last experiment, for comparison with related essays, there was used the ICDAR (International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition) 2011 database. The configuration utilized in this last step was the one obtained in the best test among the previous ones. The proposed methods presented promising results compared to others reported in the literature.

Pearl Harbor and 9/11 have been compared together since the 9/11 attacks. This thesis analyzes the two from the viewpoints of the politicians, the media, and finally the effects on culture. Sources were gathered from newspapers, books, journal articles, government resources, and internet web sites. Pearl Harbor and 9/11 are similar on the surface, but upon looking into further circumstances, dissimilarities are found between the two events. With sixty years between the two events the outcome and delayed reactions are different, but the initial response is similar.
