This paper introduces the Tukey family of symmetric and asymmetric -distributions in the contexts of univariate -moments and the -correlation. Included is the development of a procedure for specifying nonnormal distributions with controlled degrees of -skew, -kurtosis, and -correlations. The procedure can be applied in a variety of settings such as modeling events (e.g., risk analysis, extreme events) and Monte Carlo or simulation studies. Further, it is demonstrated that estimates of -skew, -kurtosis, and -correlation are substantially superior to conventional product-moment estimates of skew, kurtosis, and Pearson correlation in terms of both relative bias and efficiency when heavy-tailed distributions are of concern.

Abstract:
This article aims to describe whether there is a relationship between students 'self-confidence and students' speaking abilities. This study uses cluster sampling methods and oral tests. The population in this study were VII grade students of SMPN 9 Pinrang. The total population is 104 students. The sample used was class VIIL.1 totaling 28 students. The method used in speech evaluation is an oral test. The results of research using Pearson Product Moment obtained r count value of 0.700 and with the product value of r products when products with N = 28 found 0.478 at 1% significance level and found 0.374 at a significant level of 5%. To find out the level of product moment correlation the coefficient of 0.61-0.80 = substantial. This can be seen in the results of the analysis, namely: 0.700> 0.478 (5%) and 0.700 0.374 (1%) with db: 28. This means that Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. The conclusion of this research is that there is a significant relationship between students 'self-confidence and the eight-year students' speaking ability in SMPN 9 Pinrang.

Abstract:
A hybrid brain computer interface (BCI) system considered here is a combination of electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). EEG-fNIRS signals are simultaneously recorded to achieve high motor imagery task classification. This integration helps to achieve better system performance, but at the cost of an increase in system complexity and computational time. In hybrid BCI studies, channel selection is recognized as the key element that directly affects the system’s performance. In this paper, we propose a novel channel selection approach using the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient, where only highly correlated channels are selected from each hemisphere. Then, four different statistical features are extracted, and their different combinations are used for the classification through KNN and Tree classifiers. As far as we know, there is no report available that explored the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient for hybrid EEG-fNIRS BCI channel selection. The results demonstrate that our hybrid system significantly reduces computational burden while achieving a classification accuracy with high reliability comparable to the existing literature.

Abstract:
The present study examined the nature of upper second cycle elementary school students’ critical thinking ability, investigated the correlation of critical thinking skill with learners’ English language achievement and sex, and explored the effect of critical thinking ability on learners' English language achievement. The study involved 99 grade seven students from two government full cycle primary schools in Woldia town. In order to gather data, standardized critical thinking test was administered and semester based learners’ English language achievement scores were used. So, T-test, Pearson product moment correlation and linear regression ware employed to analyze the data. Results of t-test applied to analyze the critical thinking test results revealed that participants’ level of critical thinking skill was very low, and the mean difference between female and male students’ critical thinking score was not statistically significant. However, the result of Pearson product moment correlation coefficient showed that there was a positive significant correlation between the critical thinking ability and English language achievement; whereas, correlation was not found between learners’ critical thinking proficiency and sex. The finding from the linear regression also exposed that learners’ critical thinking proficiency could predict approximately 36 % of learners’ English language achievement. Finally, the researchers made conclusions and forwarded recommendations based on the findings.

Abstract:
The correlation coefficient is the most commonly used measure for summarizing the magnitude and direction of linear relationship between two response variables. Considerable literature has been devoted to the inference procedures for significance tests and confidence intervals of correlations. However, the essential problem of evaluating correlation equivalence has not been adequately examined. For the purpose of expanding the usefulness of correlational techniques, this article focuses on the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient and the Fisher’s z transformation for developing equivalence procedures of correlation coefficients. Equivalence tests are proposed to assess whether a correlation coefficient is within a designated reference range for declaring equivalence decisions. The important aspects of Type I error rate, power calculation, and sample size determination are also considered. Special emphasis is given to clarify the nature and deficiency of the two one-sided tests for detecting a lack of association. The findings demonstrate the inappropriateness of existing methods for equivalence appraisal and validate the suggested techniques as reliable and primary tools in correlation analysis.

Abstract:
Three analyses were carried out. Analysis I estimated the correlation between the total score of the Kuwait University Anxiety Scale and a self-rating scale of happiness with large sample of male ( n = 1,312) and female ( n = 1,272) Kuwaiti adolescents. Pearson product-moment correlations were –.43 and –.44 ( p < .001) for boys and girls, respectively, suggesting divergent validity of the anxiety scale. Analysis II examined the correlations between scores on the Kuwait University Anxiety Scale and the Somatic Symptoms Inventory for a nonclinical sample of women ( n = 30), and female outpatients with anxiety disorder ( n = 30). Pearson product-moment correlations were, respectively, .85 and .53 ( p < .001), which support the criterion-related validity of the Kuwait University Anxiety Scale with respect to the Somatic Symptoms Inventory. In Analysis III a sample of 60 male and female outpatients with anxiety disorder and 60 nonclinical participants were matched on age, education, and occupation. All responded individually to the Kuwait University Anxiety Scale. Significant differences among groups, especially noticeable for men, support the discriminant validity of the scale. So, the clinical as well as research use of the scale can be recommended. By and large, the divergent, discriminant, and criterion-related validities of the scale have been adequately supported so subsequent replication is expected.

Abstract:
This paper introduces two families of distributions referred to as the symmetric κ and asymmetric - distributions. The families are based on transformations of standard logistic pseudo-random deviates. The primary focus of the theoretical development is in the contexts of L-moments and the L-correlation. Also included is the development of a method for specifying distributions with controlled degrees of L-skew, L-kurtosis, and L-correlation. The method can be applied in a variety of settings such as Monte Carlo studies, simulation, or modeling events. It is also demonstrated that estimates of L-skew, L-kurtosis, and L-correlation are superior to conventional product-moment estimates of skew, kurtosis, and Pearson correlation in terms of both relative bias and efficiency when moderate-to-heavy-tailed distributions are of concern.
