Abstract:
Abstract Energy efficiency has been of the key topics for urban planning for the past few years in relation to sustainable development, resilience as well as climate change. There are many technological approaches aiming at efficient use of energy, innovative technologies and renewable sources of energy, but what is often missing is its relation to spatial planning and planning system and documentation. Horizon 2020 project Making City is striving to promote Positive Energy District (PED) planning and methodology aiming at development of new integrated strategies to address the urban energy system transformation towards low carbon cities, with the PED approach as the core of the urban energy transition pathway. It is implemented on the level of cities and city districts, having two types of areas – two lighthouse cities and six follower cities. The city of Trencin (Slovakia) is one of the follower cities where multiple urban areas have been selected to replicate the PED concept developed by the project consortium. Trencin is the eight largest city is Slovakia with a rich manufacturing history in textile and arms industry. It is currently focusing on diversified its economic activities in the sectors of tourism, innovation, culture and industry. The PED replication will involve a broader city centre area including multiple municipal buildings (schools and sports infrastructures) and residential buildings (individual housing and apartments). The following paper describes the key notions from the PED concept providing a holistic approach on harmonizing energy and urban planning for energy. It evolved from single, unintegrated, simple “building” based interventions into PED concepts looking forward to reaching energy and climate targets which will lead to an integrated energy planning. The paper further explores this PED approach in the city of Trencin, including the challenges it had to overcome during the implementation, as well as perspectives for its future development. The aim of the project further on is to create a standardized concept ready to be the core of specific urban energy transitions planning processes.

Abstract:
Food waste (FW) has been linked with nutrient intake, menu performance, food acceptability, costs and environmental impacts. This study aims to evaluate the FW in the wards of a Portuguese public hospital. The evaluation of the FW of lunch meals was performed during 21 days, to all new hospitalized patients (n = 105) admitted in four hospital wards (Medicine (Med), Paediatrics (Ped), Oncology (Onc) and Orthopaedics (Ort)). For each patient, the type of diet and FW were evaluated during the length of hospital stay (covering 321 meals). The FW of the dish was calculated by the physical method by weighing and the soup by the method of visual estimation, evaluating before and after distribution. The patients have a mean 3.1 ± 2.2 day length of hospital stay. In relation to the FW of the dish per ward, that in the Ped ward it was 72.6%, Med 47.5%, Onc 46.9% and Ort 58.4% (ρ = 0.027). The FW for Ped soup was 67.1%, Med 30.9%, Onc 29.4% and Ort 35.2% (ρ = 0.018). The FW values are high, especially in the paediatric ward. The institutions are unaware of the FW produced and given the magnitude of the problem it is necessary to implement effective measures.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTIntroduction:Emergency department (ED) crowding is a significant problem in Canada and has been associated with decreased quality of care in general and pediatric emergency departments (PEDs). Although boarding of admitted patients in the ED is the main contributor to adult ED overcrowding, factors involved in PED crowding may be different. The objective of this study was to report the trend in PED services use and to document the degree of overcrowding experienced in a Canadian PED.Methods:A retrospective cohort study was conducted using administrative data from a tertiary care PED from 2002 to 2011. The primary outcome was PED use (total volume of visits and case severity per triage levels using the Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale [CTAS] score and admissions). Secondary outcomes included measures of PED overcrowding, such as rates of patients leaving without being seen (LWBS) and length of stay (LOS).Results:Total volumes increased by 30% over the 10-year study period, whereas hospitalizations remained stable at approximately 10%. Trends in CTAS levels did not indicate meaningful changes in the severity of cases treated at our PED. LWBS proportions among CTAS 3, CTAS 4, and CTAS 5 groups and LOS for all CTAS groups progressively and statistically increased from year to year. Conclusions:Over the course of the study period, there was a substantial increase in PED visits, which likely contributed to the worsening markers of PED flow outcomes. Further study into the effects of PED crowding on patient outcomes is warranted.

Abstract:
Background: Protein energy deficiency (PED) is one of nutrition disorders which happen to children under-five years. According to data of nutritional status examination result 2005 and 2006, the prevalence of PED at the Province of Sulawesi Tengah was 30.61% and 30.84%, whereas at District of Morowali was 11% and 11.6%. Lots of factors cause malnutrition among children under five, among others is imbalanced nutrient intake, infection, and rearing pattern of mothers comprising care and food supply. Objective: To identify rearing pattern of mothers as risk factor for the prevalence of PED in children under five. Method: This was an observational study with case control study design. Population and samples of the study were children under five suffering from PED as indicated from anthropometric standard weight for age according to standard of WHO National Child Health Standard (NCHS), i.e. < -2 elementary school to ≥ -3 elementary school. The controls were children under five who did not suffer from PED. Respondents consisted of mothers of children who had PED and did not have PED that fulfilled inclusion and exclusion criteria. The variables observed were rearing pattern, infection as confounding variable and nutritional status. Nutritional status of children with PED and without PED was processed using index of weight for age against standard of WHO-NCHS. Chi-square and odds ratio were used to identify rearing pattern as risk factor for PED.Results: The result of the study showed that there were 23 mothers (57.5%) practicing poor rearing pattern in children with PED and there were 35 mothers (87.5%) practicing good rearing pattern in children without PED. The result of statistical test showed p < 0.05, i.e. p = 0.001, so there was significant difference in rearing pattern of mothers which consisted of knowledge, attitude and practice in the care and food supply of children under five. Conclusion: Poor rearing pattern of mothers brought greater risk for children with PED than good rearing pattern in the care and food supply of children under-five.

Abstract Positive Energy District (PED) is a relatively new concept from which many projects are planned, however, only a few cases are currently close to be materialized, therefore, in this study the PED projects in operation and in implementation process in existing districts are gathered in order to serve as a base for future PEDs. In this sense, certain points of each selected project are highlighted due to their relevance within the project development and their replicability potential. Furthermore, intending to learn from the experience of the assessed case-studies, this paper aims to understand the current situation regarding PED implementation to simplify the development of further PEDs.

Abstract:
Abstract BACKGROUND The safety and efficacy of the first generation of the Pipeline Embolization Device (PED; Medtronic Inc) have been proven in large case series. Ischemic events are one of the most common complications following treatment of aneurysms with flow diverters. The new PED Flex with Shield technology (PED Shield; Medtronic Inc) was introduced to minimize the rate of complications. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the outcomes of patients harboring aneurysms treated with the PED Shield. METHODS This was an observational, prospective, single-arm multicenter study of patients treated with the PED Shield. The primary safety endpoint was the absence of major neurological complications and death. The secondary effectiveness endpoint was angiographic occlusion at 6 and 12 mo. Technical complications were also reported. RESULTS Between November 2017 and December 2018, 151 patients from 7 centers with 182 aneurysms were enrolled. The mean aneurysm size was 7.0 mm; 27 (14.8%) aneurysms were large, and 7 (3.8%) were giant. In 141 of 151 patients (93.4%), the primary endpoint was reached. The overall rate of periprocedural complications was 7.3%. Of the aneurysms, 79.7% met the study's secondary endpoint of complete occlusion at 6 mo and 85.3% at 12 mo. CONCLUSION The PED Shield is a safe and effective treatment for intracranial aneurysms. The results regarding total occlusion and ischemic complications did not differ from those obtained in case series using previous versions of the PED. Long-term follow-up and comparative studies are required to provide stronger conclusions regarding the reduced thrombogenicity of this device.

Abstract:
Background: Periodontal diseases (PED) are a widespread, complicated, long-lasting inflammation of the gum. In recent years, lots of lines of evidence have confirmed the existence of an interrelated link between PED and systemic illnesses including acute coronary syndrome (ACS). In the pathogenesis of ACS, the persuasive inflammatory role of coronary vessels is well documented. An increasing body of evidence highlights the impact of UA in inflammation. C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute phase reactant well-known as a nonspecific marker for systemic and vascular inflammation. The study intended to evaluate the associations of PED with SUA and CRP in patients treated for ACS in a comparative study. Methodology: 136-patients registered in this comparative study labeled as ACS besides 74-controls. The blood analysis of creatinine, urea, SUA and CRP had done for the applicants. Oral examination for grades and severity of PED had performed, and the candidates were grouped accordingly. Statistical studies had attained using SPSS software (IBM), with a significance-value calculated at <0.05. Results: There was a significantly higher HSCRP levels with a higher nonsignificant SUA levels among the ACS group. Risk factors in terms of incidence of DM, hypertension, and smoking (except the BMI) were significantly higher among patients. More than 3/4th of the patients' group was suffering from generalized PED (74.3%), while 15.4% had a localized PED and only 9% had healthy periodontium. Meanwhile, about 2/3rd of the controls has normal periodontium. 18.4% vs. 75% had a mild, 25.7% vs. 4% had a moderate, and 21.3% vs. zero had a severe form of PED, in patients and control respectively. There was a significant worsening of PED in terms of severity and grading (p-0.001) with the increase of HSCRP levels, which is not the case for increased SUA. Conclusion: HSCRP levels were significantly higher among patients with ACS compared to healthy control. There was a significant worsening of PED in terms of severity and grading with the increase of HSCRP levels. This is not the case for increased SUA, which is not associated with poor periodontal status.

Abstract:
This study aims to evaluate the environmental and energy effects of the reuse of 1.0 m³ of water in a cooling tower obtained from an oil refinery effluent. An arrangement comprising reverse osmosis (RO), evaporation (EV), and crystallization (CR) was created for water desalination. Six process routes were evaluated; for this purpose, each of them was converted into an specific scenario of analysis: S1: pre-treatment with Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) + RO + EV (multi-effect distillation) + CR; S2: S1 with pre-treatment by BaSO4; S3: with Ca(OH)2/CaCO3/HCl; S4: S3 with waste heat to supply the thermal demand of EV; S5: S3 with steam recompression in EV; and, S6: S3 with HNO3 in place of HCl. The analysis was carried out by attributional LCA for primary energy demand (PED) and global warming (GW) impacts. The comparison was carried out for a reference flow (RF) of: add 1.0 m3 of reused water to a cooling tower with quality to proper functioning of this equipment. S4 presented the best performance among the analyzed possibilities (PED: 11.9 MJ/RF; and GW: 720 gCO2,eq/RF). However, dependence on other refinery sectors makes it inadvisable as a regular treatment option. Thus, S5 appears as the lowest impact scenario in the series (PED: 17.2 MJ/RF; and GW: 1.24 kgCO2,eq/RF), given the pre-treatment technique of RO-fed effluent, and the exclusive use of steam recompression to meet total EV energy demands. Finally, an intrinsic correlation was identified between RO water recovery efficiency and the accumulated PED and GW impacts on the arrangements that operate with heat and electricity.

2013 - 2014<br>This paper has as its object of study analysis of a specific organizational role of the new Italian school system, called 'instrumental function to POF', and formally established by the National Collective Bargaining Agreement of 1999. The field investigation was limited to six comprehensive schools of two towns in the Province of Salerno, where in the school year 2012/13, were instructed forty teachers. The collection of information, to be of greater interest, came through the conduction of semi-structured interviews, associated with the use of participant observation and systematic collection of institutional documents. The results achieved in the course of operations research, interpreted in the form of metaphors, aim for the understanding of the same charge of Functions Instrumental able to exert their influence on the professional shared leadership of the six schools involved, and to what extent their actions overall he recorded both on the operational strategies within and outside organizations themselves. The information collected and analyzed, obtained by a predominantly qualitative research methodology, they have no claim to generalization. [edited by author]<br>XIII n.s.

The teacher's representations would enable the pupils' brain to work on a simplified scenario, facilitating the understanding of the object of teaching. However, certain kinds of images do not reduce the complexity, because of their "semantic ambiguity": many interpretations would be possible, all equally strong. The teacher could take advantage of this feature in order to turn on the curiosity, to encourage the discussion, the reflective thinking or interpretative hypothesis. Through four case studies, we aimed to explore the actual use of photography in primary school. Starting from the pedagogical reflections about the cases, the research intends to increase the educational research's awareness about the use of photographic images in the classroom, sug-gesting some tips for designing TLA and developing a review of appropriate digital apps.

Abstract:
The dissertation is about community and social inclusion. The research is a the case study of a concrete experience of community education. The aim if the research work is to retrace the history of the “Il Cardo Social Cooperative” exploring the educational settings that characterized its educational work from 1988 to 2018. The purpose of the case study is to conduct an analysis on the steps that led the Cooperative, moving from services, to be an educational reference for its territory. Research, starting from a single experience, aims to reflect broadly on the social and cultural changes affecting contemporary society. The dissertation is divided into three main themes: the first consists in the theoretical study of the concept of community and social inclusion today; the second explores the theoretical aspects of possible research approaches, in this part a significant work is dedicated to the review of the literature on the "case study"; the last part is dedicated to research itself (data and analysis) and is the contextual and "material" part of this work.

Abstract:
Teachers' professional expertise is based on (but not limited to) a complex, multifaceted and situated professional knowledge, in this dissertation identified in the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPCK) framework. Literature has widely investigated the interconnections between TPCK and tacit non-rational underpinnings - in this dissertation identified in the construct of dispositions - when it comes to integrating technologies into teaching practices. Furthermore, a successful technology integration, supported by strong knowledge bases and positive dispositions, implies specific decision-making processes to be enacted - in this dissertation identified in the construct of pedagogical reasoning. Hence, it is crucial to investigate how teachers reason professionally about integrating technologies, e.g. in a core teaching practice such as designing a learning unit. Whereas quite broad is the literature on the efficacy of engaging student-teachers in design tasks supporting dispositions and TPCK's improvement, it is still unclear if and how these tasks can engage some sort of pedagogical reasoning. The present dissertation reports on a research carried out at pre-service level to investigate how TPCK-informed design tasks may engage student-teachers in pedagogical reasoning, considering their implicit dispositions on the matter of technology integration in education. The ultimate aim of the research is to provide empirical evidence for a better understanding and fostering of reasoned technology-integrated teaching practices, to the service of initial education programmes, scholars and practitioners. Given the complexity of the phenomenon and the contextual influence on it (i.e. the specific pre-service academic strategies used), this research takes the form of a multiple case study engaging three Higher Education institutions across Europe, in their Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programmes (N=345). The multiple case study included the implementation of several instruments for data collection, namely (1) observation, (2) documentation, (3) focused interviews and (4) a pre-/post - questionnaire. The reader will find both case-specific and cross-case analyses of the phenomenon at study. Overall, the emerging findings would suggest ITE's strategies fair efficacy in supporting student-teachers' knowledge bases and dispositions toward technology integration, both powerful and positive enablers for future behaviours. On the other hand, notwithstanding the case-specific strengths, findings suggest that part of the student-teachers' reasoning processes for technology integration in design tasks, may find its roots elsewhere. The conclusions of the present research would suggest the need for further investigation of the phenomenon.

Abstract:
The research recorded in this thesis aims to find out best practices in macro-planning and managing of university blended learning (BL) courses reflecting on the model coming out of the case study of the second-cycle degree course in “Management of educational services” of the University of Padua. The research plan displays a quantitative level, a qualitative one, and a study in depth-processing level. It has pointed out a whole of dimensions featuring a BL course through a quantitative tool, the (tutor and student) questionnaire, and two qualitative tools: an interview of the manager of the E-Learning Centre of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia and a focus group hold with teacher of the second-cycle degree course, who went into the specific aspects of macro-planning and management of a didactic BL framework. The first chapter introduces the research work and sets out its scientific motivation. The research questions are about possibilities of applying BL didactics to a master degree course, secondly about BL supply of specific second-cycle degree course subjects, thirdly about potentials of BL approach in higher education, and eventually about individuation of best practices of macro-planning and managing to apply on BL university courses. Moreover the chapter deals with the landmarks of this research, both theoretical (constructivist approach) and methodological (action research) and sets out their choice. Finally it lists and explains the tools used in this research (case study, focus group, questionnaire, interview, documents). The second chapter scans several BL backgrounds and applications in university contexts beginning from the methodological-technological model of integrated learning (Galliani 2002). The chapter considers the Report of the Web-Commission (USA, 2000), the theoretical models of the ELUE Project (European Union, 2003) and the CampusOne Project (CRUI Foundation, 2002), as well as the Blended Conference of the University of Hertfordshire (UK, since 2005) and the FernUniversität of Hagen (Germany, since 1974). It takes into account also the whole planning and managing realities of Padua University (like the online courses of the Education Science Faculty of Padua) and nascent CMELA, as well as the experience of CARID (now SE@) of Ferrara and the University E-Learning Centre (CE@) of Modena and Reggio Emilia. The third chapter deals with macro-planning and organisation of BL university courses, summing up their features. It discusses the properties (flexible, open, and distributed) of the BL learning environments (Khan 2005) and the virtual environments actually used in the aforesaid second-cycle degree course (digital platforms and Faculty web site). Eventually it examines macro-planning phases in their various dimensions: pedagogical, institutional, technological, interface design, evaluation, management, resource support, and ethical considerations (Khan 2004). The fourth chapter is about the case study on the second-cycle degree course in “Management of educational services”. This case study – carried out on the aforesaid second-cycle degree course as a whole according to the action research methodology – considers both its curricula: i.e. “Direzione e Management nelle Istituzioni Scolastiche e Formative” (a “strong” BL course with compulsory BL subjects) and “Direzione e Coordinamento dei Servizi Sociali ed Educativi” (a “weak” BL course with optional BL subjects). The development and the peculiarities of the course are described in this chapter as well as its target is studied through the filter of the implemented methodological tools (focus group, interview, questionnaires, documents). Eventually the fifth chapter sums up the data end contains the conclusions about the questions of the first chapter. Having studied a traditional university course accompanied by an online segment, the research aims to establish if there could be an optimal combination of transversal rules in macro-planning and managing (which are essential in teaching activities mediated by ICT) and the specific planning sphere of a single subject. In this sense the research means to formulate concise guidelines for a shared planning and a quality service supply, respecting university teachers’ autonomy.

Abstract:
The research is part of the most critical and radical interpretation of the theoretical framework of Social Justice Education and starts with an analysis of the literature on the phenomenon of school drop-out and on that of the popular and second-chance schools, considered by virtue of their characteristics a bulwark in the fight against youth discomfort, social marginalisation and educational risk. The empirical part is dedicated to qualitative research centred on an intervention to combat school drop-out in the field of popular and second-chance schools: a case study was carried out in the school year 2020/2021 on the “Antonia Vita” Popular School in Monza, a school that offers young people aged between 13 and 16 in conditions of disadvantage or educational risk an alternative educational and didactic pathway to that of the traditional school system. The main objective of the study is to analyse the pedagogical model of the Popular School, initiating a first reflection on the concept of “drop-out” and also on the pedagogical model of the education system as a whole. To this end, the case study envisaged two distinct but complementary phases: a first, purely cognitive phase, aimed at exploring the representations and perceptions of a plurality of subjects and stakeholders regarding certain dimensions of the school and of educational and didactic work, resorting to the research and analytical methodology of the constructivist Grounded Theory; and a second phase of Research-Action, aimed at investigating the didactic mediation strategies that are activated between expert adults and students and in peer interaction. In the first case, 20 participant observations and 40 non-directive and semi-structured interviews were conducted; in the second case, an Educational Robotics Laboratory was carried out with the students, using Coderbot as a didactic mediator. First of all, the results show that the Popular School model is characterised by strong educational supervision, greater flexibility, dynamism and support than the traditional school, the individualisation of the students’ learning paths and the low numerical ratio between educator/teacher and pupils. This makes it possible to follow the individual student closely without “letting him or her get lost”. The school thus presents many structural differences with respect to the traditional school system, especially regarding the prominent position of the educator, who plays a supporting role on several levels. The results then invite reflection on the fragilities of the public education system, from which training needs emerge, particularly in the socio-educational sphere. Furthermore, the didactic mediation strategies put into practice during the peer tutoring phase of the Laboratory are discussed and a hypothesis is put forward regarding the effectiveness of this methodology in contexts of strong socio-linguistic deprivation. In line with the theoretical part and the research questions, the results outline an initial deconstruction and re-semantisation of the concept of “drop-out” in the light of that of “functioning”, proper to the bio-psycho-social model. The school is also configured as a paradoxical example of inclusion: in fact, the idea emerges that in order to pursue the objective of greater equity and justice in the school environment, there is sometimes a need to envisage alternative and highly individualised paths, which contrast with a canonical path to which experiences of exclusion and difficulty are linked.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractPositive energy districts (PEDs) are central in the global transition toward sustainable, decentralized, and self-sufficient energy systems. Energy transformation taking place locally in cities may trigger broader sustainability transitions (STs) toward PED ecosystems at macro level. The work adopts a service ecosystems perspective to tackle the complexity of STs in the energy sector. The work builds a conceptual framework intended to support the transition and renewal of PED service ecosystems at a micro- and meso levels and uses illustrative case examples from a PED located in Espoo, Finland. The framework is intended to map the interdependencies between different actors in commercializing PED service ecosystems, and acts as a transformational tool for the public and private organizations to address change in PEDs. The framework concretizes the value propositions, actor roles, resource integration, and monetization mechanisms, as well as the transformation enablers, challenges, and long-term impacts. Additionally, the goal of the framework is to help municipalities to understand their roles in strengthening the institutional and social enablers for the local energy transformation with clear regulatory frameworks, incentive mechanisms, long-term political commitment, and vision. Overall, the study supports our understanding on the underlying mechanisms in the paradigm change toward sustainable energy systems.

Abstract:
AbstractPositive Energy Districts (PEDs) represent innovative place-based strategic approaches aimed at advancing our climate goals within the built environment. PEDs are increasingly recognized as a vital component in the journey toward achieving climate neutrality and fostering smart cities. Success in deploying PEDs necessitates holistic consideration of political, social, environmental, procedural, economic, technological, and contextual factors, involving shifting constellations of stakeholders. Achieving human-centric PEDs requires a transdisciplinary collaboration and a cocreation approach, bridging gaps between the public sector, business sector, research and technology sector, and end users. Many emerging studies have recognized that the main challenge of deploying PEDs pertains to silo thinking and suboptimal governance systems. This exploratory chapter aims to delve into the governance structures and functions in the deployment of a PED project. The chapter adopts a single-case study approach focused on a Sustainable Plus Energy Neighborhood (SPEN) in the specific context of Salzburg, Austria. Our objective is to map the structure of the governance network and their interactions for knowledge and resource exchange in the deployment of PEDs. Our findings challenge the adequacy of both total rational planning and incremental planning approaches in addressing the complexities inherent in neighborhood-scale projects like GNICE SPEN in Salzburg. Our study underscores the importance of recognizing the limitations of traditional planning paradigms and advocating for more adaptive and inclusive approaches to governance. The contribution of this chapter is to refine the structural-functionalism model for empirical investigations of governance models, particularly in the context of PEDs.

Abstract:
Abstract The overwhelming majority of pressure vessels installed in the United States are constructed and stamped to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, particularly Section VIII Division 1, as required by most states’ pressure equipment laws. In states where there are laws mandating pressure vessel construction to ASME Section VIII, vessels constructed and stamped to a different construction code or certification body are not allowed unless the state’s laws provide an exception, and the state’s governing body, such as a board, accepts the non-ASME stamped equipment. A vessel that is accepted in this manner typically referred to as a “state special.” Alternatively, a similar exception and approval is needed for previously installed equipment that was not designed to any pressure vessel code, but new operating conditions exceed the state’s applicability limits for pressure, typically 15 psig, or other criteria. This paper presents two case studies. The first case study examines a case where pressure vessels that were CE stamped in accordance with the European Union’s Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) were requested to be installed in a US state. The next case study examines a case where a vessel was originally built to be non-pressure containing in the 1950s, but recent operational changes raised the possible pressure the vessel could experience higher than the exemptions provided by the state. In both cases, the fundamental considerations and approach for gaining state/jurisdictional acceptance are discussed. Additionally, a review of the US states where pressure vessel laws exist and the states’ specific requirements for pressure vessel installation and operation is provided.

Esbach, Michael, and Mike Hedemark. Payments for Ecosystem Services: An Introduction and Case Study on Lao PDR. American Museum of Natural History, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.5531/cbc.ncep.0057.

Abstract:
Humans are dependent on resources and processes provided by ecosystems, known as ecosystem services (e.g., food, clean water, disease control, climate regulation). Yet populations are placing increasing demands on critical ecosystems, often leading to their degradation and loss. This unsustainable use can be partly attributed to the fact that ecosystem services are not fully captured in commercial markets and are thus undervalued. Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) are a suite of mechanisms designed to determine the value of ecosystem services and promote their conservation in the marketplace. Through incentives for land management, restoration, conservation, and sustainable use activities, PES schemes, when well adapted to the local context, can promote both sustainable ecosystem management and development. This module provides detailed background information on ecosystem services and PES, complemented by a case study narrative of the relevance of PES to National Protected Areas (NPAs) in Lao PDR, a country highly dependent on ecosystem services, both for subsistence and for income.

Sahgal, Gayatri. Unpacking Tax Relations in Contexts of Fragility: A Case Study of Somalia. Institute of Development Studies, 2025. https://doi.org/10.19088/ictd.2024.119.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper examines fiscal relations in contexts of fragility. It focuses on the tax relationship between the post-transitional Somali government and advanced businesses in the telecommunications sector, which emerged during the period of state collapse. The paper poses two specific questions. It asks why such dominant economic players would pay taxes to a state that, per standard tax theory, had limited authority, legitimacy, and capacity to deliver ‘reciprocal returns’ or collective goods and services. Secondly, for a sector that had emerged in the context of statelessness, it interrogates whether some level of state capacity had become ‘pivotal for business’? In doing so, the paper assesses the impact of fiscal relations on broader state-building dynamics. In interrogating these questions, the paper employs a qualitative process tracing approach and draws on recent anthropological research on fiscal exchanges and emerging insights from the fragile state experience. The paper finds that as the sector transformed, becoming more decentralised, technologically advanced and internationalised, there were specific ‘returns’ that the sector required from a formal state, which underlaid the sector’s tax motivations. However, while the Telecom sector demonstrated increasing support for the state project and was willing to make specific tax contributions – regulatory fees for licences and sales taxes – it resisted corporate taxes. Such fiscal dynamics demonstrated that the sector’s level of investment in the state project was tentative. As such, there was still some way to go before the formal state institutions were seen as critical for business.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the prognostic status of PET/MRI on surgery in patients with refractory epilepsy, and the methods chosen were randomized controlled trials, cohort studies, and case series of &gt;15 patients. Condition being studied: Medically intractable epilepsy, characterized by recurrent episodes of tonicity, disorientation, spasms, and convulsions, affects 1-2% of the population because treatment trials with 3 or more different antiepileptic drugs have failed. Patients are selected for PET mainly because other standard noninvasive tests (especially MRI and EEG) fail to provide sufficiently reliable localization to allow precise excision of the epileptogenic zone and a good prognosis.

Turner, Paul, Alessia Baseggio Conrado, and Jennifer Quint. Using NHS Data to Monitor Trends in the Occurrence of Severe, Food-Induced Allergic Reactions Work Package 1. Food Standards Agency, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.46756/sci.fsa.lvn457.

Full text
Abstract:
People with food allergies may experience food allergic reactions due to accidental exposure. These reactions are commonly categorised as non-severe, fatal food anaphylaxis and near-fatal food anaphylaxis. Non-severe allergic reactions to food are more common with an incidence of up to 1,000 times greater than fatal food-related anaphylaxis. However, obtaining accurate data relating to the circumstances under which these reactions occurred is challenging under the current diagnosis coding system used in the National Health Service (NHS). This project addressed two key questions: What are the trends in the occurrence of food hypersensitivity (FHS) reactions and their consequences in terms of healthcare encounters (both to hospital and primary care)? What are the circumstances surrounding severe, life-threatening reactions to food? Approach The researchers used existing NHS datasets (relating to Hospital Admissions, Accident &amp; Emergency visits, Critical Care admissions and Primary care visits) to evaluate healthcare encounters due to food hypersensitivity over the study period. Patient pathways through the healthcare system were also assessed by linking these different datasets. Key Results Food-induced anaphylaxis represented 29.4% of reported anaphylaxis. admissions, and increased significantly from 1.23 to 4.02 admissions per 100,000 population per annum over the study period. However, despite an annual increase of 5.7% in hospitalisation for food-induced anaphylaxis between 1998 and 2018, the case fatality rate (proportion of hospital admissions associated with a fatal outcome) more than halved, from 0.7% in 1998 to less than 0.3% in 2018. 152 deaths were identified during the study period where the cause was very likely to have been food-induced anaphylaxis. At least 86 (46%) fatalities were triggered by peanut or tree nuts. Cows’ milk was reported to be the most common cause of fatal anaphylaxis in children aged under 16 years. Using data from England for the period 2008-2018, the prevalence of food allergy ranged from 4% in preschool-aged children (under 5 years), 1-2% in school-aged children and young people (5 to &lt;20 years) and 0.9% in adults. Although the same methods were used throughout the study period, the statistics presented may be prone to limitations such as miscoding and incomplete datasets. Prescription of adrenaline auto-injector devices (AAI) are an important risk management intervention in people at risk of food-induced anaphylaxis. However, there is significant under-prescribing of AAI. Data showed that 40% of individuals with prior food-induced anaphylaxis were not prescribed AAI and at least 59% did not have AAI on repeat prescription. Most healthcare visits for food allergy occurred in general practice. Less than 3% of individuals with a diagnosis of food allergy attended Accident and Emergency during the study period, 2008-2018. Therefore, using hospital data in isolation to analyse patterns of health service utilisation with respect to FHS may not provide a comprehensive overview.

Abstract:
The Third Five-Year Plan (1961–66) aimed at reducing the crude birth rate in India to 25 per 1,000 population by 1973, however this goal has not been achieved. Several other demographic goals were set later, to be achieved by specified years, but they were deferred or revised. One major reason for the failure to achieve these goals was thought to be the lack of adequate infrastructural facilities for the family welfare program, thus it was decided to improve the institution–population ratio. The primary objective of this study is to assess the quality of interaction between clients and providers, and the quality of family welfare services. More specifically, the study examines how family welfare program personnel interact with clients in a given setting, the quality of interaction, how frequently such interaction takes place, the provider's view of, and satisfaction with, the information and quality of family welfare services provided, and the client's view of, and satisfaction with, the information and quality of family welfare services received. The focus of the investigation is on the family welfare program—the maternal and child health and family planning programs.
