Abstract:
2013 - 2014
This paper has as its object of study analysis of a specific organizational role of the new Italian school system, called 'instrumental function to POF', and formally established by the National Collective Bargaining Agreement of 1999. The field investigation was limited to six comprehensive schools of two towns in the Province of Salerno, where in the school year 2012/13, were instructed forty teachers. The collection of information, to be of greater interest, came through the conduction of semi-structured interviews, associated with the use of participant observation and systematic collection of institutional documents. The results achieved in the course of operations research, interpreted in the form of metaphors, aim for the understanding of the same charge of Functions Instrumental able to exert their influence on the professional shared leadership of the six schools involved, and to what extent their actions overall he recorded both on the operational strategies within and outside organizations themselves. The information collected and analyzed, obtained by a predominantly qualitative research methodology, they have no claim to generalization. [edited by author]
XIII n.s.

Abstract:
This research project aims to focus on the need of conscious pictures' integration into the teaching and learning activities (TLA) and to base the use at a neuroscientific level. The teacher usually adopts visuals to support oral presentations, to make the concepts clear and situated, to facilitate focusing of relevant elements. Studies on the visual brain (mainly referring to the recent theory of vision by neurobiologist Semir Zeki) validate what the teacher has always known: providing learners with visuals of a particular concept, theme, topic supports the brain's work, normally engaged in looking for the essential, within the non-stop flow of the world. The teacher's representations would enable the pupils' brain to work on a simplified scenario, facilitating the understanding of the object of teaching. However, certain kinds of images do not reduce the complexity, because of their "semantic ambiguity": many interpretations would be possible, all equally strong. The teacher could take advantage of this feature in order to turn on the curiosity, to encourage the discussion, the reflective thinking or interpretative hypothesis. Through four case studies, we aimed to explore the actual use of photography in primary school. Starting from the pedagogical reflections about the cases, the research intends to increase the educational research's awareness about the use of photographic images in the classroom, sug-gesting some tips for designing TLA and developing a review of appropriate digital apps.

Abstract:
The dissertation is about community and social inclusion. The research is a the case study of a concrete experience of community education. The aim if the research work is to retrace the history of the “Il Cardo Social Cooperative” exploring the educational settings that characterized its educational work from 1988 to 2018. The purpose of the case study is to conduct an analysis on the steps that led the Cooperative, moving from services, to be an educational reference for its territory. Research, starting from a single experience, aims to reflect broadly on the social and cultural changes affecting contemporary society. The dissertation is divided into three main themes: the first consists in the theoretical study of the concept of community and social inclusion today; the second explores the theoretical aspects of possible research approaches, in this part a significant work is dedicated to the review of the literature on the "case study"; the last part is dedicated to research itself (data and analysis) and is the contextual and "material" part of this work.

Trevisan, Ottavia. "Student-teachers' Pedagogical Reasoning in Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge Design Tasks: a Cross- Country Multiple Case Study in Initial Teacher Education Institutions." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Padova, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/11577/3424841.

Full text
Abstract:
Teachers' professional expertise is based on (but not limited to) a complex, multifaceted and situated professional knowledge, in this dissertation identified in the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPCK) framework. Literature has widely investigated the interconnections between TPCK and tacit non-rational underpinnings - in this dissertation identified in the construct of dispositions - when it comes to integrating technologies into teaching practices. Furthermore, a successful technology integration, supported by strong knowledge bases and positive dispositions, implies specific decision-making processes to be enacted - in this dissertation identified in the construct of pedagogical reasoning. Hence, it is crucial to investigate how teachers reason professionally about integrating technologies, e.g. in a core teaching practice such as designing a learning unit. Whereas quite broad is the literature on the efficacy of engaging student-teachers in design tasks supporting dispositions and TPCK's improvement, it is still unclear if and how these tasks can engage some sort of pedagogical reasoning. The present dissertation reports on a research carried out at pre-service level to investigate how TPCK-informed design tasks may engage student-teachers in pedagogical reasoning, considering their implicit dispositions on the matter of technology integration in education. The ultimate aim of the research is to provide empirical evidence for a better understanding and fostering of reasoned technology-integrated teaching practices, to the service of initial education programmes, scholars and practitioners. Given the complexity of the phenomenon and the contextual influence on it (i.e. the specific pre-service academic strategies used), this research takes the form of a multiple case study engaging three Higher Education institutions across Europe, in their Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programmes (N=345). The multiple case study included the implementation of several instruments for data collection, namely (1) observation, (2) documentation, (3) focused interviews and (4) a pre-/post - questionnaire. The reader will find both case-specific and cross-case analyses of the phenomenon at study. Overall, the emerging findings would suggest ITE's strategies fair efficacy in supporting student-teachers' knowledge bases and dispositions toward technology integration, both powerful and positive enablers for future behaviours. On the other hand, notwithstanding the case-specific strengths, findings suggest that part of the student-teachers' reasoning processes for technology integration in design tasks, may find its roots elsewhere. The conclusions of the present research would suggest the need for further investigation of the phenomenon.

Di, Rauso Eugenio. "Blended learning in percorsi universitari: dimensioni macro progettuali e gestionali." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Padova, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/11577/3423593.

Full text
Abstract:
The research recorded in this thesis aims to find out best practices in macro-planning and managing of university blended learning (BL) courses reflecting on the model coming out of the case study of the second-cycle degree course in “Management of educational services” of the University of Padua. The research plan displays a quantitative level, a qualitative one, and a study in depth-processing level. It has pointed out a whole of dimensions featuring a BL course through a quantitative tool, the (tutor and student) questionnaire, and two qualitative tools: an interview of the manager of the E-Learning Centre of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia and a focus group hold with teacher of the second-cycle degree course, who went into the specific aspects of macro-planning and management of a didactic BL framework. The first chapter introduces the research work and sets out its scientific motivation. The research questions are about possibilities of applying BL didactics to a master degree course, secondly about BL supply of specific second-cycle degree course subjects, thirdly about potentials of BL approach in higher education, and eventually about individuation of best practices of macro-planning and managing to apply on BL university courses. Moreover the chapter deals with the landmarks of this research, both theoretical (constructivist approach) and methodological (action research) and sets out their choice. Finally it lists and explains the tools used in this research (case study, focus group, questionnaire, interview, documents). The second chapter scans several BL backgrounds and applications in university contexts beginning from the methodological-technological model of integrated learning (Galliani 2002). The chapter considers the Report of the Web-Commission (USA, 2000), the theoretical models of the ELUE Project (European Union, 2003) and the CampusOne Project (CRUI Foundation, 2002), as well as the Blended Conference of the University of Hertfordshire (UK, since 2005) and the FernUniversität of Hagen (Germany, since 1974). It takes into account also the whole planning and managing realities of Padua University (like the online courses of the Education Science Faculty of Padua) and nascent CMELA, as well as the experience of CARID (now SE@) of Ferrara and the University E-Learning Centre (CE@) of Modena and Reggio Emilia. The third chapter deals with macro-planning and organisation of BL university courses, summing up their features. It discusses the properties (flexible, open, and distributed) of the BL learning environments (Khan 2005) and the virtual environments actually used in the aforesaid second-cycle degree course (digital platforms and Faculty web site). Eventually it examines macro-planning phases in their various dimensions: pedagogical, institutional, technological, interface design, evaluation, management, resource support, and ethical considerations (Khan 2004). The fourth chapter is about the case study on the second-cycle degree course in “Management of educational services”. This case study – carried out on the aforesaid second-cycle degree course as a whole according to the action research methodology – considers both its curricula: i.e. “Direzione e Management nelle Istituzioni Scolastiche e Formative” (a “strong” BL course with compulsory BL subjects) and “Direzione e Coordinamento dei Servizi Sociali ed Educativi” (a “weak” BL course with optional BL subjects). The development and the peculiarities of the course are described in this chapter as well as its target is studied through the filter of the implemented methodological tools (focus group, interview, questionnaires, documents). Eventually the fifth chapter sums up the data end contains the conclusions about the questions of the first chapter. Having studied a traditional university course accompanied by an online segment, the research aims to establish if there could be an optimal combination of transversal rules in macro-planning and managing (which are essential in teaching activities mediated by ICT) and the specific planning sphere of a single subject. In this sense the research means to formulate concise guidelines for a shared planning and a quality service supply, respecting university teachers’ autonomy. An appendix with enclosures, tables, schedules, forms and documents pertinent to the research and a specialized bibliography supplement this thesis

Abstract:
The research is part of the most critical and radical interpretation of the theoretical framework of Social Justice Education and starts with an analysis of the literature on the phenomenon of school drop-out and on that of the popular and second-chance schools, considered by virtue of their characteristics a bulwark in the fight against youth discomfort, social marginalisation and educational risk. The empirical part is dedicated to qualitative research centred on an intervention to combat school drop-out in the field of popular and second-chance schools: a case study was carried out in the school year 2020/2021 on the “Antonia Vita” Popular School in Monza, a school that offers young people aged between 13 and 16 in conditions of disadvantage or educational risk an alternative educational and didactic pathway to that of the traditional school system. The main objective of the study is to analyse the pedagogical model of the Popular School, initiating a first reflection on the concept of “drop-out” and also on the pedagogical model of the education system as a whole. To this end, the case study envisaged two distinct but complementary phases: a first, purely cognitive phase, aimed at exploring the representations and perceptions of a plurality of subjects and stakeholders regarding certain dimensions of the school and of educational and didactic work, resorting to the research and analytical methodology of the constructivist Grounded Theory; and a second phase of Research-Action, aimed at investigating the didactic mediation strategies that are activated between expert adults and students and in peer interaction. In the first case, 20 participant observations and 40 non-directive and semi-structured interviews were conducted; in the second case, an Educational Robotics Laboratory was carried out with the students, using Coderbot as a didactic mediator. First of all, the results show that the Popular School model is characterised by strong educational supervision, greater flexibility, dynamism and support than the traditional school, the individualisation of the students’ learning paths and the low numerical ratio between educator/teacher and pupils. This makes it possible to follow the individual student closely without “letting him or her get lost”. The school thus presents many structural differences with respect to the traditional school system, especially regarding the prominent position of the educator, who plays a supporting role on several levels. The results then invite reflection on the fragilities of the public education system, from which training needs emerge, particularly in the socio-educational sphere. Furthermore, the didactic mediation strategies put into practice during the peer tutoring phase of the Laboratory are discussed and a hypothesis is put forward regarding the effectiveness of this methodology in contexts of strong socio-linguistic deprivation. In line with the theoretical part and the research questions, the results outline an initial deconstruction and re-semantisation of the concept of “drop-out” in the light of that of “functioning”, proper to the bio-psycho-social model. The school is also configured as a paradoxical example of inclusion: in fact, the idea emerges that in order to pursue the objective of greater equity and justice in the school environment, there is sometimes a need to envisage alternative and highly individualised paths, which contrast with a canonical path to which experiences of exclusion and difficulty are linked.

The research explores the role of the Internet in promoting civic engagement and participation among young people (aged 18-28). Three websites established by different Italian organisations have been selected with the aim of studying empirically the use of the Internet to support diversified forms of civic and political participation. According to the systemic approach employed – which consists of a triangulation among text analysis, ‘audience’ study and process of media production – the qualitative analysis focuses on the specific ‘youth civic participation discourse’ which is constructed through these civic sites. The findings of the research contribute to raise some issues about the processes construction of youth civic identity; the dilemmatic nature of the interactivity discourse and the motivations of young people in participating in the public sphere and the practices of informal citizenship education.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Kernel smoothing is a popular approach to estimating relative risk surface from data in the location of cases and controls in geographical epidemiology. To date, the use of a fixed smoothing parameter has dominated in literature, but it can perform poorly with highly heterogeneous population. A more intuitive approach is to utilize a spatially adaptive, variable smoothing parameter where the amount of smoothing depends inversely on the local amount of data. The interpretation of such surfaces is facilitated by plotting of tolerance contours which highlight areas where the risk is sufficiently high to reject the null hypothesis of unit relative risk. This approach has been applied to a epidemiological survey about the risk of death in the area surrounding an Italian petrochemical refinery where 172 deaths and 337 controls has been identified. Maps of the spatial variation of relative risk and tolerance contours have be produced. Only for women and those spending most of their time at home, we found a sub-region of elevated risk highlighted by plotted tolerance contours.

Andersson, Rikard.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Patients admitted to hospital need nutrition to recover. Enteral nutrition is probably preferable to parenteral nutrition should be initiated as early as possible. Enteral nutrition may be administered in various ways, it can be intermittent and include night rest, or given continuously to avoid abrupt reductions in blood sugar levels. An unwanted complication is loose stools of the patient. The question is whether the form of administration of enteral nutrition can affect the frequency of diarrhea. Aim: With the help of a retrospective registry study comparing number of loose stools per day between two different forms of administration of enteral nutrition: intermittent with night sleep compared with continuous supply throughout the day. Method: A quantitative retrospective registry study has been carried out on a total of 50 ICU patients with traumatic head injury at Norrlands University Hospital. Records from 2007 to 2012 were used in the study. Results: No significant difference was detected between the groups in the number of diarrhea per day, p = 0.5. However, this study demonstrated that patients receiving intermittent enteral nutrition was significantly greater amount of enteral nutrition (699 ± 249 ml) per day compared with patients who received their enteral nutrition continuously (505 ± 278 mL / day), p = 0008. Conclusion: The results from the study show that the number of loose stools do not seem to depend on the form of administration of enteral nutrition. Quantities of enteral nutrition differ statistically significantly significance of which it should be further studied to determine which form of administration is preferred.

The aim of this work has been to investigate how cost per patient (CPP) data may be visualized for the purposes of Region Östergötland. Visualization could potentially aid decision-makers and managers within the organization who have to deal with aggregated healthcare costs. The work has shown that it is possible to design and implement an interactive web-based visualization tool prototype for the patient data using the Dash visualization library. In order to evaluate how practical the proposed application is from the users’ perspective, interviews have been conducted with the staff of the business intelligence (BI) unit at Region Östergötland. The answers have been positive regarding the usability of the visualization. However, since the application has only served as a prototype yet, further investigations should be made internally to estimate the effect the interactive visualization approach may have on future decision-making processes related to CPP.

Dianese, Angelica <1996&gt. "Metodologia DEA per l’analisi dell’efficienza delle performance aziendali Case study: Superdry plc." Master's Degree Thesis, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10579/17531.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Executive Summary Swedish companies have a relatively small domestic market that quickly becomes saturated. For those companies who are dependent on increased sales in order to survive or have the ambition to grow internationalization is the one option. Traditionally companies have ex- panded internationally by first exporting to countries with a short geographical as well as cultural distance. With increased experience the companies have entered markets farther and farther away, culturally as well as geographically. Eventually it might be possible to for example start production abroad. With today’s increasingly internationally competitive market it becomes more frequent that companies establish business in foreign countries at a more rapid pace. The choice was to study PMC Cylinders, a Swedish medium sized company that has been operating internationally for approximately thirty years. This company ́s internationaliza- tion processes have been analyzed in order to understand factors that might bridge these distances to other countries. These distances can be bridged by for instance existing customers, consultants, sister com- panies with complementary resources or employees with host country origin. Further the way of establishing foreign operations can contribute. With shorter distance there is no big issue. For example Norway was perceived almost like selling in Sweden. When the per- ceived distance is medium, here Germany serves as an example, it becomes more compli- cated. Existing British customer relationships made it possible to enter the German market. It was not enough to use an agent which was the case at an earlier failed attempt. Relation- ships with different actors and ways of entering foreign markets become even more impor- tant when this distance is long. Here China can serve as an example; the country is far away geographically as well as culturally. Together with a customer production was established in the Chinese market. This was also seen as an opportunity by a sister company to follow one of their customers. Thus the efforts of the companies were combined. PMC Cylinders also used employees with technical, cultural and language knowledge to bridge the distance. Thus there were a number of factors making the establishment in China possible. By the study of PMC Cylinders internationalization processes certain patterns were found. The outcome of these patterns is a structured model with a number of steps. This model implies that with increased geographical and or cultural distance the importance of connec- tions and ways of entering the market grows. The model is a decision tree which can be seen as an internationalization tool for PMC Cylinders.

Abstract:
With the emergence of the use of the traditional (non-touch screen) notebook computer in the classroom, different teaching styles and equipment have been introduced. Teachers have started to use the Notebook PC to support their teaching. They now have the ability to gather and use a far greater range of materials in the classroom with little distraction. The introduction of the touch screen Tablet PC has brought another dimension to the way technology can be used in the classroom. This study seeks to investigate the ways in which Tablet PC technology has been used to enhance the learning of students within the classroom and how that differs from that of the traditional notebook. The purpose of this study was to look at ways in which the Tablet PC technology was being used in a specific school setting. It looked at how teachers used the Tablet PC in a classroom environment; investigated what unique features of the Tablet PC were being utilised; and for what purposes specific features were being used. It looked at how classroom dynamics changed; the physical look and feel of the classroom; as well as the changes in pedagogies around the use of the Tablet PC. Additionally, the study looked at teacher/student and student/student interactions as a result of the use of the Tablet PC. The study concluded that the Tablet PC was implemented with some success, within the selected school, and a number of unique features were used. The results suggested that in particular circumstances the dynamics of the classroom changed for the better as did classroom setup, pedagogies and interactions between students and teachers. The study found that there were a number of key indicators that needed to be improved before a Tablet PC program could become successful. These included: increased Professional Development for teachers around the use of the Tablet PC in the classroom; increased time allocation for teachers to investigate and create learning activities; improvements in the school’s infrastructure and quality of the students’ Tablet PCs. The study also recommended that once the key indicators have been met, another study into the use of the Tablet PC in a school setting should be conducted. This should be able to give a far greater indication of the role the Tablet PC has in education.

Abstract:
This thesis provides an empirical case study as to whether, and, how the macro political dynamics might lead to the micro organisational changes of cost management practices in public sector organisations. It draws on Dillard et al.'s (2004) version of institutional theory complemented by Burns and Scapens' (2000) model. Empirical data for the thesis came from an extended case study (Burawoy, 1998) of a state-owned enterprise in the Egyptian Electricity and Energy (E&E) Sector, in which semi-structured interviews, field observations and documentary analysis were deployed as the data collection methods. The thesis highlights the necessity of seeing cost management change, especially in the politically sensitive public utilities in less developed countries, as an institutional political change that brings together the wider political objectives of the state and the narrower economic objectives of the firms. Accordingly, it provides a political theorisation for cost management change in the public sector. There, the dynamics are the fact that the E&E costs in the Egyptian business environment are historically managed at three distinct but interrelated institutional levels: political level, field level, and organisational level. For example, with the failure of re-privatisation attempts, new forms of periodic control reports have emerged including a 'cost report' which has been instrumental in changing managerial actions and behaviours. With modernisation programmes accompanied by reprivatisation attempts, initiated by the Egyptian government and supported by the international development agencies such as the World Bank and the European Union, advanced ERP technologies have been brought in to institutionalise costing rules and routines. With ERP, the organisational management under what are effectively military practices has re-defined cost management processes into a single procedural protocol.

Abstract:
I May Destroy You (BBC/HBO, 2020).

Abstract:
IPD meta-analyses have putative benefits but require greater expertise, more time to complete, and are resource intensive. Aim: To determine whether the extra investment is justified by greater reliability, usefulness and health gain by means of a case study in surgery. Methods: A systematic review of published data for laparoscopic versus open repair of inguinal hernia was first conducted. The review was then augmented using, where possible, the results of IPD analyses. The approaches to meta-analysis were then compared in terms of the number of trials and number of participants included, differences in statistical significance and statistical precision, and differences in results that might result in different clinical decisions. Key reasons for any differences were identified. Finally, the impact of the added value of IPD on UK NHS health policy was described. Results: The systematic review of published data was difficult and exemplified the problems of using this approach. Through the formal structure of the EU Hernia Trialists Collaboration it was possible to collect IPD for 25 out of 41 trials and supplemented aggregate data for seven trials. Overall, the meta-analyses based on IPD resulted in more conservative treatment effects with narrower CIs and more precise estimates of effectiveness, and led to fundamentally different conclusions about the effects of laparoscopic surgery on persisting pain. Conclusions: The extra investment required for the collection and re-analysis of IPD enhanced the amount of data available, improved the quality of that data and resulted in estimates of effectiveness that were more precise and generalisable. The finding of less reported persisting pain following laparoscopic repair (although methods used to assess pain were unclear for the majority of trials raising questions about validity and freedom from bias), a key determinant of long-term quality of life, led to a change of UK NHS health policy.

Abstract:
This thesis analyzes Kingsolver's consistent critique of mainstream United States culture by focusing on her use of characters of various races and other cultures within her seven novels. Each chapter examines the manner in which her texts critique an aspect of United States culture: individualism in The Bean Trees, Animal Dreams, and Pigs in Heaven; imperialism in the United States and abroad in The Poisonwood Bible and The Lacuna; and anthropocentrism in Prodigal Summer and Flight Behavior. By consistently foregrounding protagonists who learn to listen to others and consequently craft creative solutions to cultural, political, and scientific problems, Kingsolver's novels present themselves as transnational American literature. This thesis considers transnationalism as a critical paradigm—a recurring pattern of creative thinking linked to internationalism but not contingent on it. Reading Kingsolver's novels as transnational literature not only acknowledges the various critical perspectives within Kingsolver scholarship, suggesting a way to move past the representational hurdles critics decry, but also, more importantly, provides a unified reading of her oeuvre to date.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study utilises a hermeneutical phenomenological framework to explore the lived experience of losing a child and how this experience may be understood theologically, with a view to exploring the delivery of spiritual care to the bereaved. This three dimensional approach takes seriously the voices of the bereaved as they influence the move towards a deeper understanding of theology, spiritual care and the unique role of the hospital chaplain. To explore the lived experience, unstructured interviews were carried out with parents and grandparents in five bereaved families following the death of a child. This included 5 mothers, 3 fathers, 5 grandmothers and 4 grandfathers. The participants were identified and recruited because of their experience of the death of a child in the family, had some concept of God and had used the chaplaincy service. They were interviewed as married couples or as individuals if there were no partners taking part. There were ten interviews conducted during the first 6 months of the research and contact approved for a 5 year period should this be necessary. Gadamer's philosophy of interpretation was essential to this process as the research involved an in-depth, thematic and hermeneutical analysis of the interviews. This analysis produced three key themes: hope and struggle with God, a new experience of community and a changed relationship with the child. The themes were then viewed from a theological perspective and the insights gained were the basis for exploring the delivery of spiritual care in NHS Scotland. The findings offer new insights into the delivery of spiritual care, key amongst the findings being: • Chaplains are not specialists in spiritual care when defined as separate from religious care. • Chaplains are specialists in theology and the language of faith where developing a ‘critical theological tool box' is essential. • Chaplains are specialists in supporting people to personally engage with the questio Chaplains are specialists in supporting people to personally engage with the question of life, giving them permission to move outside the ‘traditional box' of religion. The findings of this research will hopefully challenge and inspire chaplains to review the meaning of spiritual care and assert the unique and essential place they have within NHS Scotland.

Abstract:
Businesses interact constantly with the environment, realizing several and heterogeneous exchanges. Organizations can be considered a system of different interests, frequently conflicting and the satisfaction of different stakeholders is a condition of success and survival. National and international literature attempts to explain the complex connection between companies and environment. In particular, the Stakeholder Theory considers crucial for businesses the identification of different stakeholders and their involvement in decision-making process. In this context, profit can not be considered the only purpose of companies existence and business aims become more numerous and different. The Stakeholder Theory is often utilized as framework for tourism studies, in particular in Sustainable Tourism Development research. In fact, authors consider sustainable the tourism development able to satisfy interests of different stakeholders, traditionally identified as local community and government, businesses, tourists and natural environment. Tourism businesses have to guarantee the optimal use of natural resources, the respect of socio-cultural tradition of local community and the creation of socio-economic benefits for all stakeholders in destinations. An obstacle to sustainable tourism development that characterizes a number of destinations worldwide is tourism demand seasonality. In fact, its negative impact on the environment, economy and communities may be highly significant. Pollution, difficulties in the use of public services, stress for residents, seasonal incomes, are all examples of the negative effects of seasonality. According to the World Tourism Organization (2004) the limitation of seasonality can favour the sustainability of tourism. Literature suggests private and public strategies to minimize the negative effects of tourism seasonality, as diversification of tourism products, identification of new market segments, launching events, application of public instruments like eco-taxes and use of differential pricing policies. Revenue Management is a managerial system based on differential pricing and able to affect price sensitive tourists. This research attempts to verify if Revenue Management, created to maximize profits in tourism companies, can also mitigate the seasonality of tourism demand, producing benefits for different stakeholders of destinations and contributing to Sustainable Tourism Development. In particular, the study attempts to answer the following research questions: 1) Can Revenue Management control the flow of tourist demand? 2) Can Revenue Management limit seasonality, producing benefits for different stakeholders of a destination? 3) Can Revenue Management favor the development of Sustainable Tourism? The literature review on Stakeholder Theory, Sustainable Tourism Development, tourism seasonality and Revenue Management forms the foundation of the research, based on a case study approach looking at a significant destination located in the Southern coast of Sardinia, Italy. A deductive methodology was applied and qualitative and quantitative methods were utilized. This study shows that Revenue Management has the potential to limit tourism seasonality, to mitigate negative impacts occurring from tourism activities, producing benefits for local community and to contribute to Sustainable Tourism Development.

James, Veronica. "Care and work in nursing the dying : a participant study of a continuing care unit." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 1986. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk:80/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=215733.

Full text
Abstract:
The hospices attempted to offer a way of dying with dignity which would counter the growing lobby for euthenasia legislation by taking account of 'total pain' (mental, social, spiritual, physical). Participation on an NHS/Macmillan Continuing Care Unit indicated that the nurses were committed to giving 'total patient care', but were conscious of their inability to fulfil their principles. They explained their care of the dying in terms of a tension between 'care' and 'work'. The practical outcome of the tension on the terminal care unit is analysed as 'carework'. This emergent nursing practice, where physical care tends to overshadow 'emotional care', is observed in the routines and rituals of the Unit, of which 'normal death' is one example. The two separate social frameworks of 'care' and 'work' reflect a gender division of labour in which 'caring' is commonly domestically based and carried out by women, and 'work' is in the public domain and dominated by men. Public service 'people work' requires that the two frameworks be amalgamated. The tension between 'care' and 'work' is described as a failure of accommodation between the two which is exacerbated by a science based model of illness. It is suggested that these effects combine in a pattern of resistance which opposes the full implementation of hospice movement aims.

Abstract:
2011/2012
Taipana is a 699 inhabitants village located in the Eastern Julian Pre-Alps. It is inhabited by a linguistic minority, whose survival is endangered by the ageing of its population and the abandon of the young and productive age group. The municipal administration is actively fighting the threatened disappearance of its population. While usually administrations take note of migration flows only when they arrived so far that they cannot be ignored anymore, the municipal administration of Taipana has decided to encourage migration to its territory, in order to stop its possible complete abandon. Through a housing policy of low cost rents and houses for sale, and thanks to a consolidated network of human relations, young families from other countries are thus attracted to settle here. Taipana is usually not their first stop in Italy. Many of them speak Italian. In Taipana they buy houses and open enterprises. Their children go to school there. At the moment, the school children community seems to be the best result of the repopulation policy: it is, in fact, a united group of young persons, all of them conscious and proud of their diversity. Their adult relatives seem to be more resistant to any kind of grouping. Old and new inhabitants apparently ignore each other and lead separated lives. If deeper investigated, a number of personal relations have grown between neighbours, colleagues, citizens. But none dares yet feeling the member of a new and original kind of community.
XXV Ciclo
1973

Ibeji, Ngozi Ihuoma. "The impact of regulatory-induced consolidation on banks' performance : case study of an emerging economy." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2015. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk:80/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=228198.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the impact of policy-induced consolidation on banks' performance. The Nigerian bank consolidation of 2004/5 was one of the regulatory reforms initiated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to tackle the country's deteriorating and weak banking sector by increasing the equity capital of banks and with the aim of making the banks more robust and resilient to shocks. This study utilises Impact evaluation technique to measure the effect of the policy intervention in the banking market, using the data of the Nigeria banks and banking industry from 2000 to 2010. Banks' performance were analysed based on eight performance indicators that served as bench marks with which the degree of success of bank consolidation policy were measured. The eight indicators are thus tied to the policy objectives which primarily are to enhance the bank's profitability, efficiency and riskiness. The measure of change in bank performance post-policy provides some informative evidence about the impact of the policy intervention. Methods of assessment therefore measure the change in performance of the banks (broadly classified into 3 distinct groups based on their mode of consolidation) in the post-policy period and compare it with their pre-policy performance, examining the trends and changes and making inferences based on appropriate statistical tests. Our analysis provides evidence that the policy-induced consolidation through bank recapitalisation has significant impact on most of the banks' performances. We find that policy effect on banks' performance is mixed; while some outcomes are in accordance with the policy objectives of enhancing profitability, efficiency and riskiness of the banks, others are contrary to the objectives. Some results also suggest that the policy did not have significant effect on the banks' performance. The research findings underscore the importance of time in measuring 3 performance change, as well as mode of consolidation, as they influence bank performance and determine the extent to which possible gain from consolidation would be realised and by extension the policy objectives achieved. This is because, apart from mode of consolidation, the policy effects on bank's performances were found to be largely affected by time, that is, whether the assessment is short term or medium term. For instance, the effect of the policy in all the banking group's risk performance indicators within the first two years (short-term) post-policy, was found to be positive (improved), while the policy effect changed significantly and adversely when the measurement was extended to five years post-policy period (medium term). Similarly, our results indicate that the policy effects on the banking group's performances differ substantially. Other factors also shown to influence the policy effects on banks' performances include: bank ownership, size and the number of banking firms in a consolidated bank. However, we find strong evidence that contrary to the general notion that bank consolidation leads to concentration of market, Nigeria policy-induced bank consolidation did not result in concentrated market rather it lowered banking market concentration, because it created relatively equal-sized banks in the post-policy period. Also we are able to distinguish in our analysis between the changes in banks performance that were as a result of the policy from the changes that would have occurred anyway, by estimating the change in performance in the post-policy as a result of persistence of banks performance in the pre-policy period, and this was found to be positive and statistically significant especially for the standalone and the merged group's profit returns.

Addoweesh, Khawla Khaled. "Assessment of students' participation in asynchronous online discussions : a case study of a Saudi university." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2016. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk:80/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=232278.

Abstract:
Asynchronous online discussion has the potential to offer equal participation opportunities (Bali & Ramadan, 2007), improve critical thinking skills and facilitate collaborative learning (Lee & Tsai, 2011). However, the success of asynchronous online discussion is based on students' active participation and the depth of their contributions (Mazzolini & Maddison, 2003). Several studies have confirmed that the quality of students' discussion can be maintained by assessing students' contributions. This research, therefore, aims to identify effective assessment criteria with which to assess students' participation in online discussion. The study employed a qualitative case study methodology to explore the assessment of asynchronous discussion in depth. This involved five cases and was conducted at King Saud University. Five instructors and 39 students participated in the study. Students' and instructors' perspectives were triangulated by obtaining data through different methods: in class and online observation, focus groups and semi-structured interviews. An inductive approach to data analysis was followed, informed by constructivist grounded theory. Data were analyzed in two stages: the first stage involved the in-depth analysis of each case. Then, the second stage involved a cross-case analysis of the five cases. Seven categories of assessment criteria emerged: sufficient answers and explanation, participation, originality of contributions, writing format and structure, posting within the timeframe, use of external resources and applying common ground rules. The cross-cases analysis resulted in the development of a framework for the assessment process, elements of this framework are: Preparation for the online discussion task, assessment design, before and after task feedback. This study contributes to the body of knowledge in terms of understanding the role of assessment in students' participation in online discussion This study contributes to the body of knowledge in terms of understanding the role of assessment in students' participation in online discussions. Findings from both the learners' and instructors' experiences allow an in-depth understanding of the assessment process. This study also provides a practical framework for instructors who wish to integrate online discussions to their teaching practice.

Daramola, Ibidun B. "Exploration of pastoral counselling in Africa : generic qualitative research : a study of pastoral counselling in Africa with Nigeria as a case study." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2015. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk:80/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=227914.

Abstract:
Although pastors in Africa have received a Western form of theological training, the findings of this research reveal that their mode of counselling does not bear a resemblance to the form of counselling that is practised in the West. The counselling that takes place in Africa takes its cue from the traditional mode of counselling. This indicates the stronger influence of their worldview in spite of the long duration of Western instruction that the pastors receive in the course of their training. This research set out to explore the practice and experience of pastoral counselling within four evangelical churches in Nigeria. It also had the intention of recommending ways of improving the current form of counselling. In order to do that, it needed a basis for comparison. A concept analysis of pastoral counselling from a Western perspective provided the needed reference. The research, located within practical theology as its overarching framework, engaged the Generic Format as its social science research methodology. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and participants observation. A theological reflection of the thesis revealed that there are various practices that are consistent with the Christian tradition but others that tend towards extremes. The research also reveals that counselling in the West is more professional and psychologically-based but has deviated from its original course after the introduction of psychological theories to its counselling ministry. Therefore, both practices in conversation have encouraged each other in the areas of their strengths and challenged each other to revisit their weaknesses in order to enrich their counselling ministries. It has recommended that theological seminaries in Africa should take the lead in enriching their pastoral training curriculum. Also, pastors called into the counselling ministry should be encouraged to develop such ministry while the Church creates the forum for their practices.
