This thesis establishes normal age-related changes in the magnetic resonance (MR) T1 and T2 relaxation time constants using data collected as part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) MRI Study of Normal Brain Development. This ongoing multi-centre study of normal brain and behaviour development provides both longitudinal and cross-sectional data and has enabled us to investigate the relaxation time constant evolution in several brain regions for children within the range of 0-4.5 years. O

Theory of Mind (ToM) is the ability to infer others’ mental states and thus to predict their behavior (Perner, 1991). Therefore, ToM is essential for the adequate adjustment of behavior in social situations. ToM can be divided into: 1) cognitive ToM encompassing inferences about intentions and beliefs and 2) affective ToM encompassing inferences about emotions (Shamay-Tsoory, Harari, Aharon-Peretz, & Levkovitz, 2010). Well-functioning skills of both ToM aspects are much-needed in the developmental period of adolescence because in this age phase peer relationships become more important and roma

Background: The survival rates for very low birthweight (VLBW; birthweight ≤1500 g) children are increasing, but they run a greater risk than controls of developing neurosensory disabilities and other functional problems during childhood. However, there is a great need for more knowledge regarding long-term outcome to adulthood in VLBW subjects. Aims: To evaluate long-term outcomes in a regional cohort of VLBW children born in 1987-88 regarding hospital readmissions, morbidity, neurological conditions, cognitive function, reading skills, school achievements, behaviour, growth, general health,

Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) can quantify tissue integrity in normal-appearing white matter (NAWM). NAWM abnormalities present at the earliest time point implicate neurodegeneration operative from the outset of multiple sclerosis (MS). DTI scans were obtained at first attacks from 6 children later diagnosed with MS and 6 children with monophasic demyelination, and from 6 controls, matched for age. DTI scans were also obtained from 22 children with established MS with clinical onset before age 12 years and compared to age-matched controls. Atlas- and tractography-based image processing meth

Facial bones, cervical spine, thoracic spine, and knee of children aged 5, 10, and 15 years were represented by acrylic phantoms for DT dose measurements. Effective dose was estimated for DT and for corresponding digital radiography (DR) and computed tomography (CT) patient image sets. Anthropomorphic phantoms of selected body pa
