Abstract:
The objective of this paper is to evaluate a peer education programme for female sex workers in Bali, Indonesia. Sex workers participated in face-to-face interviews and STD exams in August-September 1998. In October 1998 one woman from each of 30 clusters was selected to be a peer educator and received a 2-day training on AIDS, STDs, condom use, and condom negotiation. After training, the peer educators were visited twice a week by field workers to answer questions and offer support. All sex workers received group education every 2 months. In January-February 1999, the sex workers again participated in face-to-face interviews and examinations. One month after peer education training, only 50% of the peer educators were still working in the clusters where they were trained. To evaluate the impact of the peer educators, sex workers in clusters where a peer educator continued to work were compared with sex workers in clusters where women did not continue to work ( n = 189). In clusters where women continued to work, there were higher levels of AIDS knowledge ( P < 0.05), STD knowledge ( P < 0.05) and condom use (82 vs 73%, P = 0.15). The prevalence of Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection was also lower in clusters with a peer educator (39% vs 55%, P = 0.05) than in clusters without a peer educator.

Abstract:
Abstract Objectives To conduct summative assessment to determine the impact of peer educators in an upper division nutrition course for students’ learning and exam preparation Methods An online survey was administered to students (n = 43) in a 3 credit Advanced Nutrition course in Fall 2019 to evaluate the impact of peer educators on students’ learning of the course materials and exam preparation. Students (n = 20), response rate = 46.5%) completed the survey which included 6 quantitative and 1 qualitative question with responses on a Likert scale. Throughout the semester, 3 peer educator sessions, 30 minutes each, were implemented and students who performed exceptionally in the first exam, volunteered to lead as peer educators for the remainder of the semester. Results Students (70%) strongly agreed or agreed that the peer educator sessions helped them prepare for the exams. Furthermore, 75% of students strongly agreed or agreed that the peer sessions helped them understand the materials better. Majority of the participants found the sessions to be useful with varying levels of usefulness with the exception of only 5% who did not find the sessions to be at all useful. With regards to attending these sessions, 55% of participants were unlikely or extremely unlikely to attend the peer educator sessions if no extra credit was granted. Particularly for engagement with their peers, 95% students (mean ± SD = mean 1.45 ± 0.74, with 1 being extremely likely and 5 being extremely unlikely) indicated willingness to interact with their peers to succeed in a course. The students 'preference varied with 50% students preferring the instructor vs. 20% preferring peers to lead the sessions while 30% of participants indicated no preference. Via the open-ended question, students provided feedback on improving the sessions such as more time than 30 minutes, providing digital outlines for what was covered and instructor and student co-facilitating a session to maximize impact which warrants further exploration. Conclusions Peer educator sessions can be successful strategies to engage students with their peers in enhancing their learning and exam preparation. More pedagogical research is needed in understanding the role of peer educators in higher level nutrition courses. Funding Sources N/A

Abstract Supporting interaction in inclusive settings between students with complex communication needs (CCN) and their peers requires careful planning and support. We used a multiple-probe-across-participants design to investigate the efficacy of collaborative planning and peer support arrangements to increase peer interaction in inclusive classrooms. Participants were four middle school students with CCN who had an intellectual disability and used an iPad with Proloquo2Go as augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Educational teams comprised of a special educator, general educator, paraprofessional, and speech-language pathologist participated in collaborative planning for the intervention. For all four students, the intervention substantially increased communication to and from their peers. AAC use increased for one student. We offer implications for research and practice on supporting social interaction in general education settings.

Abstract:
This case study explores an eight-semester Peer Educator Program in the Department of Anthropology at the (school blinded) to train undergraduates in teaching practices, craft spaces of partnership, and expand learning within large General Education courses. Peer Educators self-select from any major and gain knowledge on lesson planning and facilitation, working in small groups to decide content, plan, and teach bonus sessions for introductory courses. We argue that peer-to-peer teaching reworks lines of responsibility within and around classrooms such that student agency is cultivated both for students engaged in partnership activities and those taught by student partners. Peer education thus becomes a hinge around which authority is shifted and educational agency enacted in Students as Partners programs might be extended to wider student populations. Authors include two undergraduate Peer Educators and the faculty coordinator.

Abstract:
Abstract This study aimed to explore the experience of being a Community Foodies (CF) peer educator with respect to personal benefits, specifically, personal development, wellbeing and empowerment. Qualitative semi-structured telephone interviews conducted with metropolitan and country peer educators of the CF programme. The CF programme in South Australia (SA) delivers nutrition education to disadvantaged communities. Ten adult peer educators from the CF programme: seven from country SA and three from Adelaide. Phenomenon of interest is that peer educators’ perceptions of personal growth and development from involvement in the CF programme. The interviews were audiotaped and analysed thematically. The experience of being a nutrition peer educator improved personal skills and knowledge, dietary habits, self-esteem, confidence, sense of belonging and civic engagement. Peer educators felt that the CF programme was run in a straightforward, easy to understand way, with a welcoming environment and abundant support from the coordinators. Apart from benefits to themselves, peer educators appeared to be most proud of their capacity to contribute to the nutritional health of the broader community. Peer education programmes in disadvantaged communities provide policy makers with valuable and cost-effective approaches to improve health, build self-efficacy, strengthen community engagement, and, foster active participation and trust.

Peer education in the Arizona 5-a-Day project achieved lasting improvements in fruit and vegetable intake among multicultural employees. Measures monitored implementation of peer education from peer educators’ logs, the program’s reach from employee surveys, and employees’ use in terms of employees’ dietary change. Peer educators logged 9,182 coworker contacts. Contacts averaged 10.9 minutes, according to coworkers. Coworkers read an average of 4.7 booklets and 2.23 newsletters. Many employees talked with peer educators (59%) and read materials (54%) after the program finished. Employee reports of peer educator contact were positively associated with fruit and vegetable intake. Peer education was implemented as intended and reached many coworkers. It continued after program completion, reached into coworkers’ families, and was used by employees to improve intake. This method can be used with employees who rely on informal sources and whose work presents barriers to wellness activities.

Abstract:
One in five Australian pre-schoolers are overweight or obese, meaning the first years of life are vital for obesity primary prevention. Parent child feeding practices impact on children’s dietary intake, which in turn impacts on their weight status. Parents’ child feeding beliefs are heavily influenced by parenting peers. The aim of this cohort study is to evaluate the impact of the Parents in Child Nutrition Informing Community (PICNIC) study on parents feeding practices and diet quality. The secondary outcomes are the perceptions of trained peer educators and education recipients based on their involvement in PICNIC. One hundred parents with a child aged 0–2 years at time of recruitment will participate in peer educator training, then disseminate nutrition and child feeding content to other parents over an intervention period of 12 months, supported by project-specific, evidence-based social media pages and website. An additional 100 new parents, recruited by peer educators, will participate in the study as nutrition education recipients. Both peer educators and education recipients will complete quantitative child feeding surveys before and during the 12 month intervention and a dietary intake survey at a time point 12 months post intervention. Following the intervention, 30 education recipients will be asked to participate in semi-structured phone interviews about their experiences with PICNIC. Peer educators will contribute as co-researchers and active participants in the evolution of the PICNIC model. This study will contribute to enhanced understanding of contemporary health literacy strategies for communicating nutrition and feeding messages to new parents and the impact of these strategies on parents feeding practices and children’s dietary intake in a community setting.

Placements with a ratio of one fieldwork educator to two or more students have potential benefits for students and educators as well as for placement organisers, who have difficulty finding enough fieldwork experiences for students. A questionnaire was distributed to 14 students who had been on a 1:2 placement together, in order to find out what they perceived had been the advantages and disadvantages of this experience. Their responses were largely positive, giving enhanced learning and peer support as the main advantages. The most commonly cited disadvantage was added stress, which could occur if the two students were not compatible. It is recommended that this type of placement should be used more frequently, although it is Important that strategies should be employed by fieldwork educators to exploit the full potential of the learning experience.

Abstract:
This article reports on the effectiveness of the first systematically developed health education intervention for the reduction of risky sexual behavior among soon-to-be-released prisoners in South Africa. Data from three out of four prisons are eligible for data analysis including 263 inmates. Using a nested experimental design, short-term evaluation while inmates were still in prison demonstrate that experimental groups showed higher knowledge of sexually transmitted infections and had a more positive intention to reduce risky behavior than the control group in two out of three prisons. Long-term assessment 3 to 6 months after release from prison indicates that experimental groups were more positive about sexual communication, self-efficacy, and intention. Groups educated by an HIV-negative educator perform marginally better than those in groups with an HIV-positive peer educator. It is argued that peer-led health education programs may be effective in reducing risky behavior amongst soon-to-be-released inmates.

Abstract:
MA Maslahatul Hidayah is a school located in Errabu Village, Bluto District. MA Maslahatul Hidayah is within the scope of the Maslahatul Hidayah boarding school. The number of students at MA Maslahatul Hidayah is 60 people. After the initial interview, it was found that most of the students did not understand about adolescent reproductive health including premarital sex, abortion, HIV / AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, and in MA Maslahatul Hidayah there were no Peer Educators or peer groups that could be used as a container to tell and even provide counseling about reproductive health, especially in adolescents. Talking about reproductive health is considered a taboo by some students at MA Maslahatul Hidayah because they are in a boarding school environment, not only that there are some students who choose to drop out of school prematurely due to marriage under the age of 17 years. Culture and religion in Errabu Village are still quite thick and highly respected by the existence of this boarding school. The purpose of this PKM is to form a Peer Educator and increase students' Knowledge about Reproductive Health. The benefit of this activity is expected that with the existence of this PKM the knowledge of students about Reproductive Health will increase, so that the level of reproductive health of students increases. The method used is training and counseling. The results obtained are that this peer educator is very useful for MA Maslahatu Hidayah students, they are not awkward to consult with peer educators about the problems they face, especially regarding reproductive health and after counseling about reproductive health students become more understanding and understand the importance of maintaining reproduction health. Abstract:
In order for nursing education to be effective, many teaching methods are used. One of these methods is peer learning. Peer learning is defined as assisting an individual who is from the same social group and is not a professional educator in the learning process of other individuals. The use of peer learning in the field of nursing is increasing day by day. The studies investigating the use of peer learning emphasize the advantages and disadvantages. Although there are many positive aspects of peer learning, it should not be forgotten that using peer learning in nursing education may lead to ethical problems if not well planned. These ethical problems can be confronted in terms of both the individual receiving care, the student and the peer mentor. Peer learning can be used as an effective teaching method in nursing education when well planned and audited.

Abstract This article describes a qualitative examination of the interactions between 2 students, 1 with autism and 1 with a developmental disability, and their peers without disabilities in 2 inclusive, public school elementary classrooms in the northeastern United States. Data were collected by naturalistic observation, semi-structured observation, and semi-structured interviews. Examining the quality and quantity of interactions, as well as the facilitating effects of educators, the goal was to identify conditions that support the development of friendship opportunities. The findings indicated that inclusive education and having classmates who accepted them were not enough to result in consistent friendship opportunities for the 2 focal students. Findings included (a) the identification of missed opportunities for educator intervention to support friendship opportunities, and (b) the success of several educator strategies to facilitate friendship opportunities. Implications and considerations to improve conditions to support friendship opportunities in inclusive elementary classrooms are shared.

Abstract We examined the peer interactions and academic engagement of 23 middle and high school students with developmental disabilities within inclusive academic and elective classrooms. The extent to which students with and without disabilities interacted socially was highly variable and influenced by instructional format, the proximity of general and special educators, and curricular area. Peer interactions occurred more often within small group instructional formats, when students were not receiving direct support from a paraprofessional or special educator, and in elective courses. Academic engagement also varied, with higher levels evidenced during one-to-one or small group instruction and when in proximity of general or special educators. Implications for designing effective support strategies for students with autism and/or intellectual disability within general education classrooms are discussed.

Background: Teenagers have a very complex problem along with the transmission period they experienced. In general, adolescents expressed the need for reproductive health services that is equal to 94.55% of the total respondents. Only a few respondents stated that they had used a youth service center that was 23.42%. Utilization of Youth Information and Counseling Center is still very low in Indonesia. Strategies to improve the utilization of the Youth Information and Counseling Center are urgently needed. This study was conducted to determine the relationship between knowledge, attitudes and role of peer educators with the utilization of PIK-R in adolescents in SMA N 1 Sanden. Method: This research is a quantitative analytical research with cross sectional approach. Sampling using purposive sampling technique and obtained a sample of 75 members of PIK-R in SMA N 1 Sanden. Measurement of variables using questionnaires and tested using Chi square test. Results: The results of this study indicate that the role of peer educators has a significant relationship with the utilization of PIK-R (p = 0.008), no knowledge relation (p = 0.218) and attitudes about reproductive health (p = 0.072) with PIK-R utilization. Peer educator role variables have RP = 2.323 (95% CI = 1.284-4.202) more than the number 1 means peer educator role is really risk factor. Knowledge and attitude variable have RP value = 0.590 (95% CI = 0.278-1.252) and RP = 1.798 (95% CI = 1.029-3.143). Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between the role of peer educators and the utilization of PIK-R in adolescents in SMA N 1 Sanden.

Abstract:
Background:Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in remote and very remote communities in Australia experience high rates of sexually transmissible infections (STIs), 4- to 29-fold the rates reported for non-Aboriginal people living in remote areas. Young people aged 16–29 years are particularly vulnerable to STIs. The Young Deadly Free (YDF) sexual health youth peer education program was implemented in 15 remote or very remote communities in four Australian jurisdictions in an effort to address endemic STI rates in these communities. The present study sought to evaluate the effect of YDF for Aboriginal young people. Methods: Young people (n = 128) participated in youth peer educator training to deliver peer education sessions on sexual health topics to other young people in their communities. Pre and post surveys were used to examine changes in STI knowledge, attitudes and behavioural intentions of the young people attending the peer education sessions. GHRANITE software extracted deidentified STI testing data for young people attending 13 community health services. Results: Young people (n = 426) attended peer education sessions delivered by trained youth peer educators. Pre and post surveys were completed by 174 and 172 young people respectively (median age 20 years). Gains were reported in STI knowledge, intentions to test (χ2 = 10.58, d.f. = 4, n = 142, P Conclusions: Peer education can enhance the sexual health literacy of young Aboriginal people residing in remote communities. The extent to which knowledge gains result in behaviours that prevent STI transmission requires further evaluation. Normalising STI testing among Aboriginal young people would help reduce feelings of shame.

In 1990, American educator Ernest Boyer asked us to reconsider scholarship. In doing this he recognised not only the importance of teaching, but also that it was undervalued. Boyer concluded that for teaching to become valued it needed to be evaluated as rigorously as research is and suggested, among other things, that peer evaluation was an effective means of assessing quality ? just as it is in research. Boyer noted that peer evaluation of teaching was not commonly practised in American higher education. The situation remains similar to this day in Australia with peer review of teaching (PRT) being uncommon.

Abstract As inclusive opportunities increase for students with disabilities, additional research is needed to examine high school students' classroom interactions. This descriptive study explores the nature of the social interactions of 10 high school students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in the general education classroom. Findings from our observations indicated that students with IDD interacted with peers during approximately one out of every four minutes and interacted with the general educator during one out of every 10 minutes, less than their peer comparisons' interactions with peers and teachers. Students with IDD were present (M = 89.9%) and in proximity to peers (M = 71.7%) during the majority of the class period. We discuss additional results along with practical implications, limitations, and future research directions.

This study examined material adaptations being used with students who have severe disabilities in general education elementary classrooms during language arts, social studies, and science instruction. Data sources included classroom observations, interviews, and artifacts shared by three general and special educator teams. Findings revealed themes that describe how adaptations (a) facilitate access to grade-level content (tangible, student-centered, and blended with classroom materials and instruction) and (b) enable educators to assess progress in student learning (show what students know, blended with peer learning, and ownership of learning). Findings also revealed a set of themes (team collaboration, resources available, rhythm and routine, and build momentum) that help account for the sustained use of adaptations by educator teams across curricula and school days. Implications for practice and future research are discussed.

Abstract:
Background Past research on paediatric concussion awareness, management, impact and outcome priorities has focused on health care professionals and sports organizations, yet little is known about patient, parent and educator perspectives. Methods To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a qualitative descriptive study using semi-structured interviews with three participant groups: patient-participants including children with acute or chronic concussion; parent-participants including caregivers of children at risk for or with history of concussion; and educator-participants including teachers and athletic coaches from three Ontario secondary schools. We designed our interview guide to elicit participants’ perspectives across four domains: concussion awareness, concussion experience, support and resources, and outcome priorities. We analyzed our resultant data using a qualitative content analysis approach. Results Nine paediatric patient-participants, 17 parent-participants, and 14 educator-participants completed the study. Participants described concussion as a serious health concern and attributed greater concussion awareness to increased media attention and concussion protocol implementation within schools/sports. While most educator-participants regarded concussion protocols positively, some feared student manipulation. Parent- and educator-participants desired consistent information and resources from reliable sources. The impact of concussion ranged from a few days to prolonged absences (from school, sports, and socializing) and necessitated accommodations in both academic and sport settings. Short-term problems (e.g., decreased peer-contact) primarily troubled patient-participants, whereas long-term problems (e.g., impaired academics, psychological stress) concerned parent and educator groups. Conclusion Patients, parents and educators worry about the consequences of paediatric concussion. Initial concussion recovery in youth should focus on a timely return to academics and on minimizing social isolation by ensuring peer-contact during recovery.

Abstract:
The general digitalization of contemporary society leads to a change in the use of learning technology in engineering education. The aim of this article is to present the advantages of the corporate online course for faculty members’ advanced training developed at Tomsk Polytechnic University. The general goal of this course is to supply engineering teachers with the new tools for their professional activities. Based on the analysis the different types of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), the authors dwell on the pedagogical aspects of the new course, such as openness, transparency, internal communication, and external deposition of the educational products obtained by participants in the courses. The proposed model of online course is distinguished by a distributed and problem-based character coupled with high level of the transparency and internal openness. Within the framework of the course the participants share Google Documents and Blogs with each other and with the tutor performing peer-to-peer communication. It is shown that proposed model of educator training leads to more effective results than other commonly used MOOCs. After the course is finished, all educational products achieved by participants are archived and become accessible for external users. Their rights are provided by Creative Commons Attribution. As a result of the implementation of the course, the University’s resource of open access educational and didactic materials is being maintained and developed.

Abstract:
Introduction: Third-year medical students traditionally receive their didactic or small group teaching sessions from clinical faculty during clerkship rotations. Near-peer teaching is increasingly recognized as an acceptable method for teaching, however most near-peer teaching takes place during the pre-clinical curriculum. We sought to determine if fourth year medical students were noninferior to faculty in facilitating small group discussions during clerkship rotations. Methods: Seventy-five third-year medical students participated in a small group session focused on rheumatologic diseases during their internal medicine clerkship rotation. Students were taught by fourth-year medical students who self-selected to participate as near-peer teachers at 1 clinical site (near-peers, N = 36) and by clinical faculty at another site (N = 39). At the end of the session, third-year medical students completed a survey evaluating teacher performance and effectiveness. Results: There was no significant difference between the 2 groups on each of the 17 survey items assessing teacher performance, the total teaching performance score, and the teaching effectiveness rating (all P-values >.05). A mean between-group difference of 2% in favor of the near-peers indicated noninferiority of the near-peer teachers compared with faculty teachers on the total teaching performance score. An absolute difference of 14% in favor of the near-peers indicated noninferiority of the near-peer teachers compared with faculty teachers on the teaching effectiveness score. Near-peer teachers reported several benefits, including improving their own medical knowledge and skills as a future educator. Discussion: Our data supports the noninferiority of the perceived performance and effectiveness of near-peer teachers compared to faculty teachers in the clerkship setting. Adding near-peer teachers to the clerkship setting is feasible and can be beneficial to all stakeholders.

Abstract:
The current tendency to promote university teacher’s research capacities has long over-shadowed the demand for high-quality teaching and made educator’s human capital and professional intellect look insignificant and not appreciated. Moreover, though it is commonly recognised that co-operative strategic intelligence creates most of the professional intellect of an organization, some are dubious about the value of collaborative educator work in a university for the benefit of students and the reputation of the institution itself. The paper shares insights into how to boost the teacher’s confidence in self and others, and what affects such cultivated self-esteem would have in modern needs-based cross-cultural training environments. The reflections are based on the experiences in the CLIL project implemented by the Institute of Foreign Languages of Vilnius University, and comparisons are made regarding the purposes and ways of collaboration between subject and language teachers in secondary schools and universities. In addition, an analysis of the most interesting accomplishments and an overview of key learning experiences are shared for a development of similar projects in future. To place the experience in a broader context, observations are causally linked with the overall situation in higher education where a gradual shift away from conventional teaching methods to more unstructured, learner-centred programmes is being made.
