Abstract:
This thesis consists of a traditional introduction followed by a first-person, fictional story told in seven chapters. The story begins with the protagonist in his apartment preparing to write, a brief account of his stalling, and then his beginning to write. Those chapters taking place in the vicinity of the apartment are in the present tense and those relating past adventures are written in third person, one chapter for each adventure: Africa, sailing, and Navajo Mountain. After each adventure, the narration returns to the apartment. This piece is the embodiment of both the vigorous internal work in search of understanding and the story of that work, told as a fictional account. The structure, therefore, mimics the journey: the dialogue between his present, cloistered searching and his past, external searching. Therefore, the combination of his solitary internal life and his failed adventures point to an urge to be involved and the awareness of his separateness, of the great solitude of human existence, to be both connected and isolated.

Abstract:
Through my experiences interning as a first-year teacher of underprivileged students, I have learned that being an educator is more than a career, it is a lifestyle. It is not a job title, but an identity we inhabit. This year my role as an educator consumed every part of me; mind, body, and soul. It pushed me to analyze my identity, critique my privilege, study learning theories, implement various pedagogies, evaluate meaningful content and research contextual situations. Through this process of self-discovery and research, I have determined my educational philosophy to be: children are born with greatness and have unique experiences that can be crafted into excellence through emancipatory environments that are mentally, physically, and socially inclusive.

Abstract:
Heart burial is a funerary practice that has been performed since the early medieval period. However, relatively little scholarship has been published on it in English. Heart burial began as a pragmatic way to preserve a body, but it became a meaningful tradition in Western Europe during the medieval and early modern periods. In an anthropological context, the ritual served the needs of elites and the societies they governed. Elites used heart burial not only to preserve their bodies, but to express devotion, stabilize the social order and advocate legitimacy, and even gain heaven. Heart burial assisted in the elite Christian, his or her family, and society pass through the liminal period of death. Over the centuries, heart burial evolved to remain relevant. The practice is extant to the present day, though the motivations behind it are very different from those of the medieval and early modern periods.

McCormack, Coralie, and n/a. ""My heart is singing" : women giving meaning to leisure." University of Canberra. Education, 1995. http://erl.canberra.edu.au./public/adt-AUC20060911.162648.

Abstract:
Androcentric by nature, traditional leisure research assumed male researchers knew the meaning of leisure activities for women, that home and work were separate spheres for women, and that the dimensions of men's leisure were also common to women's leisure. Feminist interest in leisure increased with the realisation that women's leisure was a product of social forces. Thus differences in women's perceptions and experience of leisure reflected wider social divisions which contributed to the construction and maintenance of inequalities. Women both as narrators of their own leisure experiences, and as researchers of other women's experiences, found little evidence in women's everyday lives of leisure as traditionally defined by male researchers. A gap exists between women's leisure experiences and the theoretical constructs available to them to talk about and investigate their experiences. This gap can be narrowed by talking with women about the feelings they associate with leisure and the contexts in which they experience these feelings in relation to the beliefs associated with motherhood, family and work. The use of memory work in the study of emotion and gender suggested a method through which feminist goals and principles could be linked to a study of feelings, contexts and meanings. Using memory work in this way involved the establishment of the memory work groups; collection of written memories according to certain rules; collective examination of the memories by co-researchers for the common meanings used in their construction; appraisal of memories by the researcher in the context of existing leisure theory; and group discussion of the researcher's appraisal and negotiation by group members of a collective account of the memories. Memories were written to trigger words which have some association with leisure and to others viewed as the antithesis of leisure. For co-researchers the interactions of feelings of pleasure, relaxation, enjoyment, obligation and entitlement in containers represented by social settings, activities and physical locations were given meaning as leisure by the feeling of being free from obligation and free to choose and to implement that choice. The research supported the interlinking of values/entitlement, containers/opportunities and feelings (both positive and negative) as elements contributing to the gendered meaning of leisure. Women's desire to achieve balance in their lives mediates these interactions. An exploration of the tensions and problems encountered as a feminist doing research revealed resolution of some of these issues was possible. Others needing further reflection and wider discussion include : how do we create conditions in which participants become co-researchers with the power imbalance between all participants minimised?; how do we balance the requirements of postgraduate research/academic scholarship with the needs of co-researchers?; and what do we really give back to coresearchers?

White, Gillian Margaret. "My heart sings : learning about spirituality in palliative care." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2002. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/3419/.

Full text
Abstract:
Holistic health care recognises that body, mind and spirit operate as an integrated whole yet spirituality remains a neglected element of total health care. A co-operative inquiry group, comprising staff from two cancer care centres, met for one year to explore spirituality. The aim of the inquiry was to explore participants' own spirituality with a view to how that affected their work. The eight health care professionals involved in the co-operative inquiry brought varied religious and non- religious perspectives as well as different professional roles. A church based journey into faith group also contributed to the research. A significant outcome of the co- operative inquiry group was the development of a continuing professional education module for health care staff about spiritual care. Although spirituality is a word used increasingly today, there seems little clarity about the concept. Confusion between spirituality and religion aggravates this lack of clarity. Significant influences in the development of the post modern, western world have marginalised the spiritual to the extent that it can be argued that people have lost a cohesive voice with which to discuss spirituality. For those contributing to this research, the experience of talking about spirituality with others in a safe but challenging environment was both enlightening and encouraging. From this experience emerged a greater clarity about spirituality which influenced both personal and professional experience. Clearer understanding led to greater confidence, enabling individuals from different professions to become more effectively involved in spiritual assessment and spiritual care. Continuing professional education about spirituality, particularly involving reflection on experience, offers an opportunity to extend this work to others.
