Full textIn his poetic body ok work, René Char develops a way to make image where the evident and the obscure are equivalent. For what is, for him, set in plain sight is not conceived according to a use of language where the world ans words would be face to face. As it cannot be reduced by language, the world is then this gesture thanks to which, at the risk of inventing itself, it is seen or said, drawn or written. Following the unfoldind of the poet's career, we can observe how such an endeavour towards sovereign poetry took shape, the better to see why Char was fascinating by painters ; how he belongs to a romanticized philosophy of nature while breaking away from it ; how, fanilly, his denial of teleological history considered as a hindrance to sovereignty led him to take a stand in his century

Full textThe aim of this Ph D is to provide a consideration of the mental and spiritual representation of the coastal world through the mural paintings of Romano-Campanian houses. The sense of beauty in coastal nature which in fact differs from the sense of nature as a whole as much as it incorporates it is not set. Its evolution which is perceptible through choice of themes and through the iconographic styles is determined by the social and political context. Our investigation is based on three historical periods: a republican, post republican and vespasian, one corresponding to the three decorative Pompeian styles: the second, the third and the fourth. Throughout these periods, coastal landscapes involve a fundamental symbolisation of cosmic nature and of the ideological structure which allow an interpretation of the universe

Full textAndré des Gachons’s work is rooted in dreamlike and fantastic images which are often typical of the symbolist corpus. The prevailing elements are anti-naturalism, a poetic aura in contrast with a world full of anxiety. At this turning point in art history the artist played a major role and expressed himself in an original way in various fields such as painting, graphic or decorative arts. The decade during which he was most active testifies to an intense literary and artistic fermentation. If one wants to give evidence of the artist’s importance in Symbolism one only needs to go over his contribution to the little “ Revues” which attempted to unite aesthetics and the “fin de siècle “ spirit. Yet his identity as an artist is best defined through the illustration of books which reveal the object of his quest as well as the role he played in this complex movement
Huh, Soo-Eun. "L’instant peint dans l'art de Tal-Coat." Paris 10, 2006. http://www.theses.fr/2006PA100141.
Full textTal-Coat suggests that we establish a bond with the world through nature. To do this, Tal-Coat sets aside as many hours as he can to walking in the countryside. Through thses walks, in the countryside and in the mountains, he seems to find answers to questions about reality. Tal-Coat draws while he is on the move because he believes it to be impossible to seize reality without a fluid trajectory. The countryside, mountains, for him, give direct access d to understanding and knowing the world. Being with nature means we are allowed to feel the emotions of the world. Tal-Coat believes there to be more value in understanding the world than in painting. We think his preoccupation with reality comes from his fervour to find true appearance of the world. In «Instant», the meaning of what is painted comes in the instant of painting. It is at this moment that we perceive the reality of the appearance of the world. At that moment, the rhythm of man and the rhythm of the world meet and identify themselves in art. The image is an «instant» image, the image that the painter chose to capture. That is «Instant» art

Full textHaving compiled the entire work catalogue of Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer (easel paintings and decorations), this thesis aims to study and re-value his importance in France during the Grand Siècle.Through the study of works of his collaborators and contemporaries the uniqueness of his artistic personality is specified, as well as his position in the development of still life painting in France during the 17th century.Born in Lille, Monnoyer came early to Paris, where he joins his knowledge of Nordic still life painting to the influence of French « silent life » painters. His name is famous too during the century of Louis XIV as a painter decorator. As such, he made the first decorations for the youth residences of the monarch (Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Vincennes, the Tuileries). He there develops the importance of the pattern of the garland glorifying the prince. As a collaborator of Le Brun, he works in private worksites (Hôtel Lambert, château de Vaux), or in castles of ministers (Sceaux). He also works in England at the end of the century. Due to the great amount of royal orders, he was forced to gather assistants. The artistic issues of this production are analysed: the situation of the still life genre in the official doctrine of the Academy, and his recognition in private collections ; the position of the still life painter in the classical generation, from Felibien to Perrault. And then, the fondamental part of Monnoyer in the development and the rayonnment of this genre is studied

Full textIn China, from the twentieth century, in an attempt to modernize Chinese painting isn't stopping to get closer to the West. This modernity, for Chinese artists, passes through the study of science and technology in the West. But how do these two concepts, the traditional legacy and Western modernity, have articulated in modern Chinese painting? A frequentation of the West by the Chinese Artistes has entrained a rejection of its own values in favour of Westernization? Or a merger has been manifested, founding a Chinese academic art? Finally, how the synthesis of Chinese and Western art tradition has crossed the political upheavals of the twentieth century in China?

Full textThis research on the report between the narrative of the cinema of Hou Hsiao-hsien and the traditional Chinese thought has for am¬bition to aim at bringing another point de view on the construction of the cinematic narrative appropriate to Hou Hsiao-hsien whose culture lies outside the western codes, the origin of cinema. Using the film means, Hou Hsiao-hsien preserved a perception appro¬priate to the Chinese culture, which thinks the world not in terms of " being ", but " breath-energy". He creates, as would a traditio¬nal Chinese painter, infusing his works sensitivity of his own, be¬cause of his real-life experience, from his origins. For the " reading " of the cinema of Hou Hsiao-hsien, it is inevitably to return to the source, which builds the Chinese traditional artistic spirit — the nature - like the " Tao " that engender all things, but does not appro¬priate them, the nature implies a situation without forcing, which depends on nothing. It is not involved, but is in accordance with all the things by letting corne what cornes from oneself. Cinema of Hou Hsiao-hsien inherits from the nature represented in painting, and transposes it in the film domain with the representation in the content, the structure and the style: the relationship between inside and outside of the plan, the movement of camera, the construction of the filmic space, the coordination of sound and the image, etc. This research tries to analyse the elements and codes, which show the nature, to interpret the ways of this demonstration. The me¬thod applied in the research is one detailed analyses of the films of Hou Hsiao-hsien, the ideas exposed in the Chinese thought on the nature, in order to determine the way the thought of the nature expressed in the cinema of Hou Hsiao-hsien, and to explain the reasons why he is the heir and how he uses these ideas to create his own world
Pau, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008PAUU1013.
Full textDuring the 19th century, the territory occupied by the United States was significantly enlarged. The Western part of the American continent was progressively populated and industrialized. While towns and factories were built, the place of nature inexorably decreased. At that time, some photographers left for the West in order to represent the landscapes which were still in their pristine condition but also the technological wonders which were invading this area. Their undertaking shows the ambivalent attitude of 19th century Americans, who were both dazed by the beauty of the wilderness and lured by technical progress. It is thus significant that they considered as sublime not only the wild landscapes created by God but also the works of the engineers. We can really speak about a transfer of values during the century. Nature, which had been a pillar in the building of a genuine national identity, was associated with the sublime straightaway, but later, its characteristics were transferred to Man and the idea of sublime was then associated with the machines. A new form of sublime appeared in America : the technological sublime. This study analyzes the part played by photographers in this evolution, which could be seen as a popularization of the sublime, thus put within the reach of every American citizen. The corpus consists mainly of photographs taken by William Henry Jackson and Carleton E. Watkins. The analysis of these pictures emphasizes the typical characteristics of the sublime. These photographs represent all the aspects of the American West in the second half of the 19th century : the wilderness as well as the Indian tribes and the industrialization of the region

Full textThe works of painters Albert Bierstadt and Thomas Moran and photographers Carleton Watkins and William H. Jackson are often credited with having been instrumental in the creation of the Yosemite and Yellowstone National Parks. Rather than look for evidence of their influence on politicians – evidence which turns out to be flimsy and the stuff of legend more than reality –this dissertation aims to study how landscape representation between 1820 and 1890 progressively shaped American mentalities so that people came to admire the wilderness they had dreaded for a long time and to advocate or accept its preservation. In the first part we will deal with the evolution of the image of nature and art since the arrival of the first settlers and their shared destinies. In the second part, we will look at how artists were made into aesthetic and environmental pioneers, sent on a mission of exploration to study the elements of nature thoroughly and recreate the scenes they had observed. Then we will analyze the writings of some artists which show a precocious ecological sensitivity and the concrete actions of those who fought for the preservation of certain sites. Finally, in the third part, we will examine the technological or artistic innovations and the adaptation of European pictorial conventions that favored the visual appropriation of nature : the panorama and the stereography, elevated vision from a distance and telescopic precision, as well as its pastoralization by human, animal presence or by the union of the sublime and the beautiful

Full textThe choice of clothing depicted in a portrait is often meaningful, and this is especially true in the Early Modern Period and the Enlightment. The meanings of many official attributes and costumes have been extensively studied and commented on, but what about portraits « en négligé » ? From the 1670s onwards, the meaning of the French « négligé » took on a new, less pejorative meaning and qualified comfortable clothing, opposed to great adornment. This study aims at determining the circumstances that lead to a revaluation of the point of view on the « négligé » and explaining its wide use in portraits, in the context of relations between France and England, which are alternating periods of assimilation and rejection, the effects of which on artistic practices are no longer to be demonstrated. In the eighteenth century, the term « négligé » refers to clothing as well as artistic styles in painting or literature, or a totally artificial attitude linked, for women, to the codified ritual of the toilet : it concerns the social practices of elites, characterized by a constant concern for representation. In some ways, the « négligé » evokes the « sprezzatura » of Baldassare Castiglione, but during the eighteenth century it is associated to, or opposed to, the idea of « natural ». Finally, the « négligé » fashion is linked to the rejection of the codes of adornment, contributing to the blurring of the Ancien Regime social hierarchy, and allowing an individual affirmation at the expense of group identity. New reading keys are thus given for portraits in which the representation of clothing did not seem significant

Full textThis work shows how the birth of acting in the eighteenth century calls into question the classical mimetic model in favour of a new expressive model. It examines three cultural areas: France, England, and Germany. It also adopts a chronological approch in order to analyse the changes undergone by the parallel between the actor, the painter and the orator. It then appears that acting theory draws its legitimacy from a rehabilitation of visual spectacle, which provokes the settling of an aesthetic of the stage paintng putting into light acting’s specificity. In that sense, acting theory does not emerge against writings on oratory action; on the contrary, it rises thanks to a visual re-interpreting of their principles freed from rhetorical codes. Hence, through the influence of sensualism, the major place given to the creative actor's body leads to theoretical and practical experimentations that concern the way to produce and to receive feelings, and which are nourished by multiple exchanges between the three countries. These hybrid reflections help redefine the art of representation as an aesthetic relation between a creating subject and a receiving subject. It contributes to the transition from an imitative conception of feeling to an expressive one. David Garrick’s spreading of a certain image of Shakespeare, whose dramaturgy offends the classical poetics rules, plays an important role in the development of a theory of visual acting an in the redefinition of theatre as text and representation

Full textThe undertaking of this work is to analyze the forms and functions that the landscape can take in a corpus of posthomeric epic texts. The Argonautica of Apollonius of Rhodes and its late anonymous rewriting The Orphic Argonautica, the Posthomerica of Quintus Smyrnaeus, the Ilioupersis of Triphiodorus, and The Dionysiaca of Nonnus Panopolitanus provide us with a fruitful field of investigation for the analysis of the literary representations of the landscape as transhistorical. Firstly, our texts operate one transformation of the archaic epic landscape that is first the image of the world with which it merges (the conformity placed between shield, island, and world) by separating the landscape from this equation and giving it greater autonomy. The world is a mosaic of autonomous landscapes that gain texture as they take on a dimension of identity. The polymorphism of the landscape then gives its moving texture to the world of the ancient Greeks : the plastic and artist dimension is borrowed by the Epic text to put into words the images of the world, which reveal epic landforms. A variety of landscape patterns emerges and opens the literary intertext to the heterogeneity of artistic forms. From this fusion of process and forms, a singularity arises, a singularity particularly antique of the perception and the translation of the landscape : wonder. Landscape and wonder mingle so narrowly as to substitute one for the other : this is a possible definition of the ancient landscape from the Hellenistic period. But the landscape as thus identified and constructed also belongs to the world the image of which it contributes to form. It is clearly localized in a geographical perspective : the landscape becomes a vivid picture of the world and the former offers the latter its identity by its unique topical characteristics. It is a form of regional identification and it is sometimes confined to the vernacular. The landscape becomes an instrument for intellectual and cultural promotion. Between formal diversity and local singularity, the landscape travels between fiction and reality : its construction methods borrow from the literary and artistic and then extend to nature. The epic genre, characterised by innovative intertextuality, makes the landscape the image of the process of transposition and adaptation. As a manifestation of the exercise of a singular and then a collective ancient subjectivity, the landscape is an instrument for measuring the unfolding of the imagination at work in the complex process of literary reception and cultural transmission ; the ancient landscape between transmission and invention, opens itself up to the everyday and social experience. Its ancient existence is effective

Full textThis research aims to report on the relationships created among natural events of high intensity which can be categorized as natural disasters due to their destructive consequences starting with the famous earthquake of Lisbon in 1755 until the mid-nineteenth century, the advent of new technology and science, which created a new relationship between man and nature. This change in catastrophe representation in literature but also in the painting is based on religious, scientific and aestethetic changes, the key elements that we explored in this work. The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the metamorphoses of writing and visual discourse of the above-mentioned period and draw attention to the transition from horror triggered by a catastrophic event to a sensory dimension and fascination caused by the spectacle of natural phenomena. We also examined the symbolism of the motifs attached to the great myths of humanity, such as the Flood, the theme of transgression-punishment-redemption part of the disaster, which generates into a new concept, an object of analysis, reflection and contemplation, which inspires us to see the catastrophic events differently

Thesis, Paris 4, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015PA040130.
Full textThe aim of this dissertation covers the practice of copying after the Antique and Masters at the French Academy in Rome while Charles-Joseph Natoire was its director between 1752 and 1775. It relates to the field of drawing and extends to the artists who gravitated around this institution. First the institutional context is considered, the premises and compulsory classes, in order to define the context in which drawing after the Antique and the Masters was practiced. The creation of painted copies outside the Palazzo Mancini raises the question of a dichotomy between models imposed and the choices of the pensionnaires when they were drawing studies in the basilicas, churches, palaces and museums of Rome. The second section provides a comparative analysis between the ancient and modern sources chosen and the pensionnaires’ interpretation of them. It provides an overview of the most commonly visited locations, the types of works favoured and the reception both of antiquity and sculptures and paintings from the Quattrocento to the Settecento. A study of four connoisseurs who commissionned drawings shows their influence on the pensionnaires’ work and allows other uses of drawn copies to be defined. Finally the conservation and circulation of drawings as material evidence of the relations between pensionnaires and those close to the Academy is examined. These confirm the role as a model assumed by some and the functions of the copy beyond an artist’s time as a student in Rome

Full textBiofouling induces important economic and ecological problems. This phenomenon includes microorganisms (bacteria, microalgae…) giving the microfouling which allows the macrofouling development with algae, invertebrates and sponges. These organisms colonize every immersed surface as boat hull. The colonization induces reduced speed of ships and fuel overconsumption. In the past, the utilization of AF coatings with heavy metals or pesticides caused environmental problems. The purpose of the study is to find an alternative to AF compounds (copper) respecting the marine medium. The marine environment is an inspiration; a biomimetic approach could be an interesting strategy to inhibit biofouling. In a first part, a screening of one hundred compounds is realized against marine and terrestrial bacteria. Eight molecules from two families (batatasins and hemibastadins) are studied to understand the way of action. Among selected compounds, Dibromohemibastadin-1 (DBHB) from hemibastadin family shows promising AF activities. This molecule is able to inhibit the biofilm formation with an IC50 of 6,44 µg/mL against the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 and 12,8 µg/mL for the marine bacterium Paracoccus sp. 4M6. To identify the way of action of DBHB, the impact on the bacterial communication named quorum sensing is investigated. The molecule shows an anti-quorum sensing property. In a second part, another group participating at microfouling is studied: microalgae. In order to evaluate the impact of hemibastadin family in particular DBHB, microalgae adhesion and biofilm formation are characterized. DBHB induces inhibition only on the adhesion and the biofilm formation of the diatom Cylindrotheca closterium. The last part presents the formulation of coatings containing six compounds from the batatasin and hemibastadin families. These coatings have been immersed in a harbor to evaluate the impact on natural microfouling. Furthermore, a new method for the evaluation of AF coatings is developed in controlled conditions, in a photobioreactor. This method allows the evaluation of coatings on the formation of a mixed biofilm (bacteria and microalgae). This method has been established to avoid environmental constraints by immersion in natural condition. This study allows the characterization of the AF property of DBHB. This compound provides promising research path to limit biofouling. Moreover, the development of a test allowing adhesion and microalgae biofilm formation in dynamic condition improves the characterization of compounds activities

This new initiative will decongest the major tourist sites and regions (reserve of Masai Mara, parks of Amboseli, lake Nakuru and Swahili coast), saturated due to double visitation (international and domestic tourists) Through a multidisciplinary approach (geography of tourism, cultural geography and geography of development), supported by data collected through semi-direct interviews, focus groups, questionnaires, field observation and analysis of existing literature, our research attempts show how the material and immaterial cultural heritage of the ethno-cultural groups of Western Kenya can be developed for tourism. Our investigation examines the regions of lake Victoria and Bungoma, particularly the sites of Abasuba Rock Art Paintings, Kit Mikayi and Namakanda. The host communities of these sites are developing strategies informed by their ethnic affiliation, that we study from the point of view of stakeholders’ strategy and development of tourism projects
Full textThe present research project aims to broaden the interpretations of two paintings of Francisco de Goya, whose titles were attributed to them a posteriori: "Cannibals Gazing at their Victims" (1800-1008?) and "Cannibals Preparing their Victims" (1800-1008?). The analysis begins with a description of the materiality of the paintings. This section represents the first reading of the works’ structural connections, and suggests that the two images are in fact two parts of a diptych. We will then delve into a critical exploration of their reception. Since these images are the two first examples of cannibal figures inspired by colonial imagery to appear in the Western art historical tradition of painting, we explore the iconographical horizon of cannibalism in order to find comparable images, the likes of which are divided into three categories: colonial images, caricature, and mythological paintings. Afterwards, considering the widespread and romantic interpretation of these paintings as representations of human nature, we will attempt to reinscribe them within the historical and philosophical spheres from which this notion derives. We focus on the ideas of Thomas Hobbes and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, whose conceptions of human nature are contradictory towards each other. While Hobbes suggests that the nature of humanity is cruel, Rousseau deems it fundamentally good. This notion is one that Goya probably encountered himself while frequenting the Ilustrados – or, the more prominent figures of the Spanish Enlightenment. As a result, we will be able to situate the two paintings with respect to their specific context of emergence. Through the examination of these horizons, we aim to demonstrate the ways in which these two paintings think, and how, through their own resources, they deviate from – or even surpass – the iconographical and philosophical situations from which they hail, and to which they respond.
Ferrero, Sebastian.
In the colonial period, the great subject matter of nature was instrumentalized by different sectors of Peruvian vice regal society. Essentially as an evangelization tool, but also as a space where colonial religiosity was manifested, the representation of nature was interpreted in different ways by artists and consumers of vice regal paintings. In this dissertation, we analyze the representation of nature in colonial Andean painting, focusing especially on the Central Andean region (currently covered by Peru and Bolivia) in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This work seeks to move forward on an issue that has been largely underestimated by critical discourse of art history regarding the Latin American colonial period. We will discuss this problem from different perspectives. However, the religious aspect seems to be above all a fundamental element to explain the key issues behind this pictorial manner. The representation of nature was consistent with spiritual values that forged colonial religiosity. Andean people considered nature as a way to visualize deep metaphysical experiences by rethinking religious identities and granting to the images magical-religious powers essential for the well-being of communities. Beyond the religious aspect, we focus on the analysis of other consequences and interests that are related to the different forms of representation of territories and elements of nature, allowing different social groups to assert their ideological, political and cultural positions. The representation of nature and space in colonial painting was never a simple decorative object, nor, in the case of religious painting, did it fulfil the role of scenographic framework and background to pictorial stories. The colonial painters treated this element with particular concern, conceding it special value and narrative powers, according to different preoccupations in colonial society.

Full textThe painting by Jean-Baptiste Belin de Fontenay, Vase d’or, fleurs et buste de Louis XIV, is a reception piece of the french academician painter to the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in 1687. Unfortunately having been little studied, this painting reveals three very interesting issues. First of all, it contain three kind of painting in one composition: still life, portrait and history painting, illustrated respectively by the flowers, the bust of Louis XIV and the piece of armor. The combination of these three types in a still life is uncommon in the 17th century French painting. It is therefore necessary to check if there is a link between the flowers, the picture of Louis XIV and the armor. Then, the contrast between the polychrome of the flowers and the monochrome of the sculpture and furniture is striking, it is possible to associate this contrast to the phenomenon of the debates between drawing and color of the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture during the second half of the 17th century. Moreover, the flowers, which were not the central subject in the original program of Le Brun, become the main subject of the table and occupy a more important place than the bust of Louis XIV. This change has not shocked the judges of the Academy since the painting was accepted without question. It therefore leads to think about the hierarchy of genres of painting, which was the official doctrine of the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture at the time. The core of this research is to see if the flowers occupy a mere decorative function, or whether they may be associated with symbols. Our research will verify the employ of floral symbols in French culture of the 17th century and then developed this employ not only in the political field, which means the flowers are in praise of Louis XIV, but also in the aesthetics domain, that is to say how the painting reflects by employing floral symbols the evolution of the theories of art in France during the second half of the 17th century, the hierarchy of genres of painting and the debates between drawing and color.
