Abstract:
Pelite® is a polyethylene closed cell foam commonly used as an interface material in prosthetics. Both normal and vacuum-formed Pelite were tested under compression and under shear loading. For shear testing, the results were not significantly different for normal and vacuum-formed Pelite. For normal Pelite, the slope of the stress-strain curve was 1.17MPa (±0.14) while for vacuum-formed Pelite it was 1.24MPa (±0.22). Compressive results, however, were significantly different. Below 80kPa of applied compression, the slope of the stress-strain curve for normal Pelite was 0.99MPa (±0.11) while for vacuum formed Pelite it was 0.72MPa (±0.12). Between 80kPa and 200kPa of applied compression, the slope of the stress-strain curve for normal Pelite was 0.45MPa (±0.03) while for vacuum formed Pelite it was 0.55MPa (±0.05). Reasons for the differences and their significance to interface mechanics and computer-aided prosthesis design are discussed.

Abstract:
The Caledonian Horn Head Slide is a spectacular ductile shear zone transecting Neoproterozoic Appin Group Dalradian metasediments in Donegal (NW Ireland). Two conflicting stratigraphic interpretations exist for the inverted succession exposed in the hanging wall of the structure. These are based on correlation with two quite separate exposed pelite formations elsewhere. The two formations are lithologically indistinct and unfossiliferous. Here we document the novel use of assayed and logged spectral gamma-ray measurements in comparing the contentious pelite in the hanging wall of the Horn Head Slide to the two possible correlative pelite formations from a wide area of their unequivocal outcrop. The data from the contentious pelite show a clear statistical and stratigraphical affinity with one candidate unit only, thus providing the stratigraphical definition necessary for refining previous cross-sections. A new model, based on our spectral gamma-ray correlation, is proposed to account for the northwestwards directed emplacement of the Lower Falcarragh Pelite Formation along the slide. This model requires pre-Caledonian normal faulting as a precursor to the ensuing compressional event in which stratigraphically younger rocks were thrust over older, a common instance in fold and thrust belt geometry. Our work suggests that spectral gamma-ray measurements may provide a rapid, field-based method for differentiating unfossiliferous pelite or mudstone units at outcrop and in geophysical well-logs, even in structurally complex areas.

The Hadrynian (Late Proterozoic) Kaza Group is 3800 m thick in the southern Cariboo Mountains of south-central British Columbia, and it consists of a lower division of pelite and psammite (700 m), a middle division of granule conglomerate with thick pelite intervals and some quartzite and carbonate (1400 m), and an upper division of granule conglomerate with little pelite (1700 m). Contacts with both the overlying Isaac Formation of the Cariboo Group and with underlying marble, semipelite, and amphibolite are gradational. The underlying strata can be traced southeastward into the middle marble and the semipelite–amphibolite division of the Hadrynian Horsethief Creek Group. The upper clastic division that caps the Horsethief Creek Group in the Selkirk Mountains is a southeastward-thinning equivalent of the Kaza Group.Two southeastward-tapering wedges of granule conglomerate, pelite, and carbonate constitute the bulk of the Hadrynian Windermere Supergroup of southern British Columbia. The lower wedge is represented by the Horsethief Creek Group, exclusive of its upper clastic division. The upper wedge is represented by the upper clastic division, the Kaza Group, the overlying Cariboo Group, and the middle and upper Miette Group. The two wedges indicate two pulses of crustal thinning and stretching during Hadrynian rifting of western North America.

Abstract:
Purpose. This study aimed to compare the effect of satisfaction and perceived problems between Pelite, Dermo with shuttle lock, and Seal-In X5 liners on the transtibial amputees.Material and Methods. A total of thirty transtibial amputees (17 male, 13 female) volunteered to take part in this research. Two prostheses were fabricated for each participant. Prosthetic Evaluation Questionnaire (PEQ) was filled in by the participants with the three liners.Results. The statistics highlight that Dermo liner showed significantly higher score (P=0.05) in walking, walking on uneven surfaces, stairs walking, fitting, donning/doffing, sitting, suspension, and overall satisfaction with Dermo liner compared with Seal-In X5 and Pelite liners. Overall satisfaction was 34% higher with Dermo liner than Seal-In X5 liner and 28% higher than Pelite liner. Participants reported less problems with Dermo liner and significant differences (P<0.05) were recorded between the three liners in sweating, skin irritation, frustration, and pain compared with Seal-In X5 and Pelite liners.Conclusion. Participants experienced high level of satisfaction and practiced fewer problems with Dermo liner. These results showed that there is good indication to believe that Dermo liner might be a good choice for transtibial users and might help the clinicians and prosthetic practitioners in selection criteria of prosthetic liners.

Abstract:
The article presents the results of research of bottom sediments of rivers of two main river basins of East Donbass - Seversky Donets and Tuzlov. In the rivers Seversky Donets basin, the distribution of trace elements (Fe, Mn, Pb, Cu, Ni, Cr, Zn, V, Sr) was found to be characterized by large variations, largely due to the more heterogeneous granulometric composition of river alluvium. As a result of the analysis of heavy metals, distribution in heavy, sandy-aleurite and pelite fractions, the value of the latter as the main carrier of trace elements in bottom sediments was revealed. The calculation of the total level of bottom sediments contamination of gross samples and the pelite fraction showed that, in general, the rivers of the region have a weak level of pollution. It has been established that it is the pelite fraction gives the most objective information about the aquatic environment.

AbstractThe mineralogical characteristics of halloysite in rectorite pelite in the Zhongxiang area, Hubei, China, were investigated using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy methods. The results show that halloysite crystals exhibit euhedral lamellar, tubular or club-like, and needle-like or fibre-like morphologies, indicating that they crystallized from a significantly water-saturated environment. The mineral assemblage of the rectorite pelite is rectorite, halloysite, illite, gypsum, pyrite and rutile, suggesting a weak supergene alteration. Several features related to crystallization of halloysite were noted. Growth of halloysite on rectorite edge surfaces in voids and twins of halloysite on a nanometer scale with composition plane (110) were found in the Zhongxiang rectorite pelite, and, in particular, the tapered ends of tubes suggest that halloysite crystallized from solution. Disaggregation of lamellar halloysite particles into parallel clusters of single tubular halloysite crystals suggests that because of significant [H2O] activity in the environment, halloysite may have been derived from the alteration of rectorite.

Abstract:
Quesnel Terrane, at Quesnel Lake, consists of two regional Triassic–Jurassic age-equivalent units, the Takla–Nicola and Slocan – King Salmon assemblages, as determined from conodonts and macrofossils. The upper mainly volcanic unit (Takla–Nicola) overlies the mainly pelitic unit (Slocan – King Salmon) and was probably emplaced by thrusting. The lower unit consists of dark grey pelite, siltite, limestone, and lesser amounts of fragmental basalt and greywacke. The upper unit consists of fragmental basalt, diorite, greywacke, and lesser amounts of dark grey siltite and pelite and limestone. The unit age and stacking order suggest that during the Jurassic, the volcanic-rich thrust sheet was transported northeastward over an eastern, more pelitic facies of the terrane. The northwesterly trending thrust trace is approximately 300 km long. The Triassic and Lower Jurassic subduction-generated volcanic unit may have been deposited on sediments and volcanics equivalent to the upper Paleozoic Harper Ranch Group; the eastern Triassic and Lower Jurassic pelite unit may have been deposited on the pillow basalt and ribbon chert of the upper Paleozoic Slide Mountain Group. The upper Paleozoic Harper Ranch and Slide Mountain group rocks may have rested on attenuated North American crust.

Tässä pro gradu -tutkielmassa tarkastellaan hyödyllisiä käytettävyystestausmenetelmiä 5–6-vuotiaiden lasten kanssa. Kun luodaan lapsille suunnattuja ohjelmistoja, on syytä ottaa lapset mukaan niin suunnittelu- kuin testausvaiheeseen. Käytettävyystestauksen avulla syntyy parasta jälkeä silloin, kun tuotetta testaavat käyttäjät, jotka sitä tulisivat muutenkin käyttämään. Lasten kanssa työskenneltäessä on kuitenkin oltava erityisen huolellinen ja otettava huomioon lasten erityispiirteet ja -tarpeet. Tässä kvalitatiivisessa tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan käytettävyystestausmenetelmiä aluksi kirjallisuuden kautta, valitaan sen perusteella kaksi merkittävää menetelmää, joita testataan käytännössä, ja lopuksi verrataan näiden menetelmien tuloksia. Tutkimuskysymykseksi tässä tutkimuksessa nousee, mitkä käytettävyystestausmenetelmät sopivat pienten lasten kanssa käytettäväksi, ja miten niistä saadut tulokset eroavat toisistaan. Tämä tutkimus toteutettiin osana kansainvälistä UMSIC-projektia, jossa kehitettiin avoimeen lähdekoodiin perustuvaa musiikillista oppimisympäristöä. Tutkimusta varten järjestettiin käytettävyystestauksia 5–6-vuotiaiden lasten kanssa oululaisissa päiväkodeissa. Käytettävyystestaukset toteutettiin yksilö- ja paritestauksina, joissa käytettävyystestausmenetelminä käytettiin aktiivisen väliintulon ja ääneenajattelun yhdistelmää ja vertaisopetusta. Vertailemalla näitä kahta menetelmää on selvitetty kumpi käytettävyystestausmenetelmä mahdollistaa laajemmat käytettävyysongelmalöydökset. Tutkimuksessa on evaluoitu myös lasten ääneenajattelua käytettävyystestauksen aikana, sillä ääneenajattelulla päästään parempaan ymmärrykseen ongelmista ja niiden syistä, lisäksi menetelmä on perinteinen ja hyvä keino omien mielipiteiden ilmaisuun. Tutkimustulokset osoittavat, että ei ole olemassa yhtä oikeaa menetelmää lasten kanssa tehtävään käytettävyystestaukseen. Molempien käytettyjen testausmenetelmien todettiin olevan varteenotettava vaihtoehto, ja eri vertailujen kautta käytettävyysongelmia löytyi yhtä paljon kummankin käytettävyysmenetelmän avulla. Keskiarvollisesti vertaisopetuksen avulla saadaan selville enemmän käytettävyysongelmia, ja tämän avulla myös lapset antavat enemmän verbaalisia kommentteja. Lasten kanssa tehtävään käytettävyystestaukseen vaikuttaa usea tekijä, eikä voida antaa täydellisiä ohjeita siihen, mikä olisi oikea tapa menetellä. Tätä tutkimusta voidaan pitää kuitenkin hyvänä ohjeistuksena tuleviin lasten kanssa tehtäviin käytettävyystestauksiin. Tämä tutkimus vahvisti jo alalla olevia tuloksia vertaisopetuksen hyödyllisyydestä ja ääneenajattelun haasteista pienten lasten kanssa.

Abstract:
Tässä pro gradu-tutkimuksessa tutkitaan digitaalisten pelien sisällönkuvailua. Niitä tarkastellaan kolmen erilaisen sisältötiedon tuottajan tekemien sisällönkuvailujen kautta. Ne edustavat kaupallista, voittoa tavoittelematonta ja säilyttämiseen pyrkivää näkökulmaa. Kaupallista tahoa edustaa pelipalvelu Steam, voittoa tavoittelematonta Suomen maakuntakirjastot ja säilyttämiseen pyrkivää verkkoarkisto Allgame. Tutkimusaineistona toimi näistä kerätty pelimateriaali, jota käsitellään teoriapohjaisen sisällönanalyysin keinoin. Teoriana toimii toisaalta muistiorganisaatioiden sisällönkuvailun teoria, erityisesti sisällönkuvailun prosessi tavoitteineen, toisaalta pelitutkimuksen puolelta pelin rakenteet. Yksi tärkeä osa ovat myös erilaiset ikäluokitusjärjestelmät, jotka tuottavat elokuvien ja pelien sisältötietoa ikäluokitusten ja haitallisesta sisällöstä kertovien symbolien avulla. Tutkimuksessa on kaksi tutkimuskysymystä: 1) mitä digitaalisten pelien sisällönkuvailussa kuvataan ja 2) mitä eroja ja yhteneväisyyksiä sisällönkuvailuissa on. Sisällönkuvailuista tarkastellaan sekä ulkoisia että sisäisiä kuvailutietoja teorian pohjalta luotujen teemojen avulla. Teemoja on neljä: 1) Sisältöä kuvaavat tiedot, 2) Ulkoasua kuvaavat tiedot, 3) Aineistolajia kuvaavat tiedot ja 4) Muut tiedot. Teemalle 1 annettiin lisäksi alateemoja, jotta sen sisältöä voitaisiin eritellä tarkemmin. Tutkimusaineisto koostui 290 pelitietueesta. Pelejä oli 34 konsolille. Tuloksista kävi ilmi, että pääpiirteissään kaikki tutkimuskohteet kuvailivat peleistä samanlaisia asioita sekä ulkoisista tunnistetekijöistä että sisällöstä. Suurin ero oli kuvailun syvyydessä. Steamin ja Allgamen kuvailut olivat aineistolähtöisiä, maakuntakirjastoilla käyttäjälähtöisiä. Kuvailuista paljastui, että etenkin maakuntakirjastoilla oli epäloogisuuksia ja selkeitä puutteita kuvailutiedoissaan, ja esimerksiki genremerkintä puuttui toistuvasti. Käytetyissä asiasanoissa oli lisäksi epäjohdonmukaisuutta ja selviä eroja kirjastojen kesken. Steamin ja Allgamen kuvailut olivat yhtenevämpiä, mutta molemmilla oli osa-alueita, joita ei ollut kuvailtu lainkaan.

L’étude a pour premier objet de découvrir les caractères communs aux jeux antiques, au jeu de paume et à la pelote basque à partir d’une étude des textes écrits par des contemporains de ces jeux. Puis, l’observation des héritiers de la paume, dans leur histoire et leur actualité, permet des comparaisons pour cerner héritages et créations à l’origine de la pelote. Dresser une carte des identités de la pelote basque, occupe une grande partie de l’ouvrage, à partir de l’analyse des archives des villes du Pays basque et des articles de presse, principalement Le Courrier de Bayonne (1851 - 1899). Des rares premières archives des XVIe et XVIIe siècles et des témoignages contemporains du jeu décrit jusqu’en 1899, on tire les mutations, les règles et les conditions spacio-temporelles ou socio-culturelles de la pratique de la paume/pelote basque, donc son histoire sur cette période. L’étude des lieux de mémoire, tant les aires de jeu que la langue basque, la géographie d’implantation de la pelote en France et dans le monde, ou encore l’installation de la tradition des fêtes basques initiées par Antoine d’Abbadie, rend compte d’autres éléments identitaires et de la complexité toujours plus étendue de “ la ” pelote basque. Enfin les représentations des jeux de balle et de la pelote, dans leurs formes, littéraire, des arts visuels, journalistique, publicitaire, sont questionnées pour mieux cerner, d’une part les symboles à l’œuvre depuis l’antiquité et, d’autre part, le phénomène pelote basque dans sa personnalité et sa modernité. Les premières archives et l’histoire du XIXe siècle montrent une pratique mêlant joueurs des Pays basque de France et péninsulaire mais une évolution différente des aires et des conditions se fera dans les années 1880 et la pelote se différencie durablement. Devenue sport au début du XXe siècle et sport international, la pelote assume des pratiques plurielles, des influences venues des pays d’Amérique et ses nombreux paradoxes
The first aim of this thesis is to determine the commonalities between games of Antiquity, real tennis, and Basque pelota, based on a review of documents written by authors coeval to these games. Then, the observation of the descendants of real tennis, in their history and their actuality, allows for comparisons to identify inheritances and creations at the origin of Basque pelota. A large part of the work is devoted to mapping out the identities of Basque pelota, based on the analysis of town records in the Basque Country and press articles, mostly from Le Courrier de Bayonne (1851 - 1899). From the rare first records from the 16th and 17th centuries and testimonies contemporaries of the game described until 1899, we draw the mutations, the rules, and the spatio-temporal or socio-cultural conditions of the practice of real tennis / Basque pelota, thus its history over this period. The study of sites of memory, such as sports fields, Basque language, the geography of establishment of Basque pelota in France and in the world, or even the establishment of the tradition of Basque festival initiated by Antoine d'Abbadie, provides an account of other identity elements and of the ever growing complexity of "the" Basque pelota. Finally, the representations of ball games and pelota, in their literary, visual arts, journalistic, and publicity form, are questioned to better pinpoint, on the one hand, the symbols used since antiquity, and, on the other hand, the phenomenon of Basque pelota in its personality and its modernity. The first records and the history of the 19th century exhibit a practice mixing players from the Basque Countries of France and of Spain but a contrasting evolution of the fields and conditions will emerge in the 1880s, and Basque pelota will lastingly be differentiated. Institutionalised in the early 20th century and made international, Basque pelota adopts plural practices, influences from the Americas, and their many paradoxes

Peliala on voimakkaasti kasvava ja kehittyvä ala ja tieteen puolella aiheeseen on viime aikoina alettu kiinnittämään enemmän huomiota. Tämän tutkimuksen on tarkoitus perehtyä pelien kehittymisen myötä lisääntyneiden automaatioiden vaikutuksista viihdyttävyyteen olivat ne sitten negatiivisia tai positiivisia. Viihdyttävyys on hankalasti tutkittava aihe siinä mielessä, että se on hyvin henkilökohtainen. Viihtymiseen vaikuttaa ihmisten luontainen halua oppia erilaisia asioita, kulttuuri joka kannustaa kilpailemaan ja yksilö itse. Yksi tärkeimmistä viihdyttävyyttä kuvaavista teorioista on flow-teoria, jonka mukaan ihminen voi nauttia mistä tahansa tekemisestä kun tietyt ehdot täyttyvät. Automaatiot ovat lisääntyneet kaikkialla ja useimmat länsimaiset ihmiset ovat nähneet erilaisia automaatteja, olivat ne sitten yksinkertaisia juoma-automaatteja tai sitten monimutkaisempia robotteja. Myös pelit sisältävät automaatiota, vaikka toisinaan rajanveto pelistä puuttuvan sisällön ja automatisoinnin välillä voikin olla hankala, mutta siitä huolimatta automaatteja on olemassa ja löydettävissä. Kysymys kuuluukin missä vaiheessa automaatit ovat jo ihmisiä haittaavia tekijöitä pelien kohdalla ja milloin ne ovat hyödyllisiä. Automaatioita ja flow-teoriaa yhdistellen voidaan pohtia mahdollisia hyviä ja huonoja puolia, jotka on vahvistettava tai kumottava tutkimuksella. Automaatioiden vaikutuksia tutkittiin määrällisellä tutkimuksella, johon osallistui Oulun yliopiston opiskelijoita. Tutkimusta varten tehtiin tietokonepeli ja peliin liittyvä kysely, johon pelaajat vastasivat peliä pelattuaan. Tutkimuksessa saatiin selville yksinkertaisimpien automaatioiden toimivan yhteisvaikutukseltaan hyvinä mutta monimutkaisempien toimintojen automatisoinnin vaikuttavan negatiivisesti.

Matkailu on yli miljardin vuotuisen ulkomaanmatkan myötä valtava liiketoiminnan ala ja kasvaa edelleen. Pelien pelaamista ei ehkä helposti yhdistä matkailuun, mutta mobiililaitteiden kehittymisen ja yleistymisen myötä pelaamisesta on tullut mahdollista ajasta ja paikasta riippumatta. Paikkasidonnaisissa peleissä on potentiaalia hyödynnettäväksi myös matkailussa. Peleillä on mahdollista markkinoida kohdetta, esitellä sen nähtävyyksiä, vaikuttaa matkailijoiden käyttämiin reitteihin ja syventää matkakokemusta. Näin voidaan mahdollisesti vaikuttaa matkakohteen valintaan, siellä vietettyyn aikaan ja saada halpaa mainosta, mikäli kävijä jakaa kokemuksiaan. Matkailijat ovat jo vuosia tottuneet käyttämään älypuhelimiaan ja muita mobiililaitteitaan mm. navigointiin, tiedonhakuun, suositteluihin ja sosiaalisen median päivitysten tekemiseen, joten samojen laitteiden hyödyntäminen viihdyttävällä tavalla markkinoinnissa on luontevaa. Pelielementtien käyttämistä muissa kuin pelikonteksteissa kutsutaan pelillistämiseksi ja sen on ennustettu olevan tulevaisuuden trendi matkailussa. Vaikka matkailu on vanha ala, on sekin kuitenkin altis muutoksille. Peli- ja matkailuala ovat myös varmasti kiinnostuneita toistensa suurista asiakasmääristä. Suositun pelin kehittäminen ei kuitenkaan ole yksinkertaista ja onnistumisten taustalla on lukuisia epäonnistumisia. Siksi onkin otettava oppia harvoista onnistuneista peleistä. Varsinkin 17 vuoden ikään ehtinyt geokätköily (geocaching) on noin 3 miljoonalla aktiivisella harrastajallaan kiinnostava ilmiö. Kätköjä on miltei jokaisessa maailman valtiossa, mutta kukin geokätkö on kuitenkin sidottu sijaintiinsa, eikä sitä voi löytää menemättä sinne. Usein kätkö esittelee jonkin esittelemisen arvoisen paikan, jota ei välttämättä turistioppaasta löydy ja joka voi olla suurimmalle osalle paikallisiakin tuntematon. Näin matkailijalle on mahdollista tarjota aivan uudenlaisia kokemuksia.

Abstract:
Thermoelectric refrigeration offers advantages (e.g., lack of any moving parts) over other refrigeration technologies. However, because maximum performance (i.e., head load for a specified temperature drop below ambient temperature) and efficiency (i.e., coefficient of performance) are relatively low, it is important to realize them to the extent possible. Here it is shown that although the cross-sectional area of the semiconductor pellets in a thermoelectric module (TEM) does not affect performance or efficiency, it may be sized to tune TEM operating current and voltage. Then, a procedure is provided to determine the (unique) height of the semiconductor pellets and corresponding current flux through them which maximize performance. Next, it is shown that a range of pellet heights accommodates a specified performance below the maximum one and a procedure is provided to compute that corresponding to maximum efficiency. A Robin (thermal resistance) boundary condition is applied between the interface where Peltier cooling in a TEM occurs and the control point where a TEM maintains the temperature of a component or medium below ambient temperature. Robin boundary conditions are also applied between the control point and its local ambient and the interface in a TEM where Peltier heating occurs and its local ambient. The analysis is generalized by using flux based quantities where applicable and the electrical contact resistance at the interconnects in a TEM is accounted for. Flow of heat and charge are considered one-dimensional.

Abstract:
An annular-geometry thermoelectric module (TEM) operating in refrigeration mode is analyzed. As in conventional (Cartesian geometry) TEMs, the pellets are interconnected such that current flows through them in series whilst they act in parallel with respect to conduction heat transfer. Current direction is such that Peltier cooling is provided at the inner radius of an annular TEM and heat dissipation is at its outer radius, where a boundary condition of the first kind is imposed. The cross-sectional area of each pellet increases linearly with radius. Accounting for electrical contact resistances at the interconnects, the necessary (one-dimensional) heat-conduction problem is solved to determine general expressions for the cooling rate provided by and coefficient performance of an annular TEM. Maximum cooling flux into an annular TEM and coefficient of performance for cooling fluxes below the maximum value are calculated and compared to those for conventional TEMs. Finally, the benefits of using an annular-geometry TEM are discussed.
