Abstract:
In aquacultural projects, crowding of prawns may adversely influence their growth and survival. In this paper, the behaviour of western king prawns, Penaeus latisulcatus, was investigated in tanks. Six forms of behaviour were identified. Prawns were exclusively nocturnal in their active behaviour. Males and females showed no significant difference in the mean time spent in various behaviours. Feeding efficiency increased as food became more dispersed over the tank floor. Behaviours leading to less efficient feeding increased with increased density, but less severely so if food was evenly dispersed than if food was presented at a point source.

Abstract:
The prevalence of bopyrid isopods, parasitic on penaeid prawn hosts, is recorded for the first time from a central Queensland prawn trawl fishery. The bopyrid parasite Parapenaeon prox. expansus has been recorded for the first time from the red spot king prawn, Penaeus longistylus, and the blue-legged king prawn, Penaeus latisulcatus. Previous unpublished reports of Parapenaeon japonicum parasitizing P. longistylus have also been substantiated. Parasite species were not randomly associated with all prawn species but rather were associated with a single prawn host species or species group. The factors that give rise to such specific host-parasite associations, particularly the host-selective behaviour of the parasite and the habitat preferences of the juvenile prawns, are discussed. Bopyrids had no significant effect on the weight of the prawns, but they did have a significant effect on ovary weight and histology, causing sterility in their hosts. High levels of infestation have been recorded from other fisheries (resulting in reduced spawning potential of the host population), but the low prevalence (0.32%) of bopyrid parasites in central Queensland prawns appears to be so low as not to present a concern at present.

Abstract:
The emergence behaviour of eight species of commercial prawns (between 25.0 and 30.0 mm carapace length) was studied in the laboratory. All except Penaeus merguiensis were nocturnal: they emerged from the substratum in the evening when the light was dimmed and buried themselves in the morning, usually before dawn. P. merguiensis generally remained on the substratum during the day. The species can be grouped on the basis of their behaviour: the first group (P. plebejus and P. latisulcatus) was most sensitive to light, the second group (P. semisulcatus, Metapenaeus ensis, P. esculentus, M. endeavouri and M. bennettae) was less sensitive to light, and the third (P. merguiensis) was least sensitive to light. To find out what triggered emergence, two species (P. esculentus and P. plebejus) were exposed to different rates of light dimming at dusk. Both species responded to absolute light intensity, but the response of P. plebejus was affected by the rate of change of light intensity. The different responses of the species to different light intensities explains some of the differences in catchability in a multi-species prawn fishery.

Abstract:
The present study was conducted to study in-vitro the antagonistic effect of Lactobacillus spp. against the pathogenic bacterial vibrio harveyi on shrimp. For this purpose, shrimp samples were collected from three different Ghers at Batiaghata upazilla, Khulna. Gills and intestines were taken out from the samples to identify the load of Lactobacillus spp. and Vibrio spp. The results revealed that the load of Lactobacillus spp. was found more than Vibrio spp. both in gills and intestines; the gills also contained higher load of Vibrio spp. than in the intestines. V. harveyi was separated from the isolated Vibrio spp. with different types of biochemical tests: Gram stain, Motility test, Indole test, VP test, MR test, Arginine dihydrolase, Salt tolerance test, growth at different temperature ranges and colony color on TCBS agar media. The isolated V. harveyi was subjected for in-vitro test. In in-vitro challenge test, the potential antagonistic effect of Lactobacillus spp. against V. harveyi was gradually obtained at 0, 4th, 8th, 12th hour of treatments. Interesting finding was that, with the time, the load of V. harveyi was reduced gradually and the lowest load was obtained after 12 hours of probiotic inoculation. The present study revealed an excellent in-vitro antagonistic probiotic effect of Lactobacillus spp. on V. harveyi. Therefore the result suggested that probiotic treatment might be an effective alternative to the use of antibiotics in treatments of bacterial diseases in shrimp aquaculture.Res. Agric., Livest. Abstract:
A 45-days indoor laboratory trial was performed with juveniles of Penaeus vannamei (3.11±0.64 g) to evaluate the effect of salinity on mineral contents in different tissues. Juveniles of P. vannamei were acclimatised to different salinity levels of 3, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60‰, using sea salt or freshwater at the rate of 2‰ per day from the original salinity. A total of 45 pre-acclimatised shrimps were taken for each treatment with three replications. At the end of the experimental period, shrimps were dissected to remove hepatopancreas, muscle and exoskeleton after collecting haemolymph; which were subjected to mineral analysis by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES). Calcium deposition was reduced by 55 and 40% in muscle and exoskeleton, respectively, whereas it increased by 142% in hepatopancreas of shrimp reared in 60‰ compared to 20‰ salinity. Magnesium and sodium content increased with increasing salinity in all the tissues except in muscle. Of all the macro elements, phosphorus (7.66 to 9.17 g kg-1) was high in muscle and calcium was predominant in exoskeleton (44.30 to 79.98 g kg-1) while sodium dominated in haemolymph (159.34-327.73 mmol l-1) compared to other elements. Shrimps reared in various salinities did not show significant difference in nutritional value in terms of mineral content in muscle. Results indicated that P. vannamei is a very efficient osmoregulator in low saline environment, in particular at 10 to 30‰ compared to the extreme high saline environment (60‰).
