Abstract:
Abstract References to native culture are frequently in the foreground of works by Chinese women artists. When they make contact with different cultures, although not necessarily connected with leaving their place of birth thanks to the transfer of information and cultural heritage that has developed extremely efficiently in the era of globalization (Gordon Mathews), they see their own entanglement in the cultural tradition. In the process of constructing their identity they try to find answers to the following question: which part of the cultural tradition is mine? Which one do I identify with? In the case of Chinese women artists, is it the legacy of literati? Classic ink painting and calligraphy? Or perhaps women's crafts that bear no name? Or perhaps a mixture of inspirations? Such questions about material heritage might also be augmented by others that consider aspects of the immaterial heritage of China. This article explores how Chinese women artists such as Chen Qingqing, Qin Yufen, Shi Hui, Wang Xiaohui, Cheng Caroline, Lin Tianmiao, Zhang Yanzi, Man Fung-yi, Liu Liyun, Peng Wei, Chen Lingyang, Chen Qiulin, Zhang Ou and Liu Ren refer to their cultural tradition.

Abstract:
Derivatives of graphene have become important materials due to their excellent properties. Graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide are especially interesting because they are produced relatively easily, cheaply and quickly. Among many possible applications, reduced graphene oxide is a good candidate for sensor applications. Its properties can be controlled at the production stage. The precursor used and the method of oxidation have a significant influence on its properties. Therefore, it is worth take a closer look at them. In this paper we analyse the influence of the oxidation method on the size of the reduced graphene stock which determine the sensitivity of the rGO layer. We used AFM microscopy for this purpose. Abstract:
Abstract Introduction: Butyrophilins (BTN) are a family of immune regulators in the immunoglobin superfamily, structurally similar to the B7 family. BTN3A, highly expressed in a variety of human cancer cells, suppresses αβ T cell activation by preventing CD45 segregation and immune synapse formation. Human BTN3A has three isoforms with almost identical extracellular domains, but each has unique cytoplasmic tail. BTN3A is highly expressed in a variety of human cancer cells. Therefore, we hypothesize that blocking BTN3A can remove the immunosuppressive effects of cancer cells and therefore enhance the tumor killing effects of immune cells. Methods: The expression of BTN3A on primary human immune cells was examined by flow cytometry. Human BTN3A2-IgG Fc fusion protein was generated in the Drosophila expression system. BALB/c wild type mice were immunized with the fusion protein and hybridomas were generated. High-affinity monoclonal antibodies (mAb) were screened and purified. NIH 3T3 cells transfected with human BTN3A1, BTN3A2 or BTN3A3 were used to examine if the purified mAbs can recognize each isoform on cell surface. Artificial CHO antigen-presenting cells (APC CHO cells) were transfected with or without hBTN3A2, and then co-cultured with human primary T cells in the presence of mouse IgG isotype or anti-hBTN3A2 mAb. A mixed lymphocyte reaction with different donor dendritic cells and T cells was performed with isotype or anti-hBTN3A mAb. The hBTN3A2 mRNA expression in a variety of tumor cell lines was screened in a gene database, and the protein expression of selected tumor cell lines was examined by flow cytometry with anti-hBTN3A mAb. Findings: Multiple tumor cell lines, originating from hematologic malignancies, carcinomas, or sarcomas, showed high cell surface expression of hBTN3A by flow cytometry. Two clones of high-affinity, anti-hBTN3A mAb were generated and purified. Both are IgG1 isotypes. Anti-hBTN3A mAb bound to BTN3A1, BTN3A2 or BTN3A3 expressed on NIH 3T3 cells. The majority of human immune cells isolated from peripheral blood from healthy donors expressed hBTN3A, including CD4 and CD8 T cells, B cells, monocytes, natural killer cells and γδ T cells. BTN3A2 expressing APC CHO cells inhibited primary αβ T cell activation, and anti-BTN3A mAb restored T cell proliferation as well as stimulated cytotoxic cytokine production in some healthy donors. Conclusion: BTN3A is an immunosuppressive receptor that inhibits αβ T cell activation. Anti-hBTN3A mAb restores T cell activation, suggesting the potential for BTN3A to be a target for cancer immunotherapy. Abstract:
In this paper, heavy metal oxide glasses co-doped with erbium and holmium ions have been synthesized. Glass composition, based on the bismuth and germanium oxides, has been selected in terms of high thermal stability (delta T = 125 °C), high refractive index (n = 2.19) and low maximum phonon energy (hvmax = 724 cm-1). Up-conversion luminescence spectra under the 980 nm laser diode excitation have been observed as a result of radiative transitions within the quantum energy level structures of Er3+ and Ho3+ ions. Optimization of rare earth ions content has been conducted, the highest emission intensity in the visible wavelength range has been observed in glass co-doped with molar concentration 0.5 Er2O3 / 0.5 Ho2O3. Abstract:
Graphene and graphene derivatives have attracted attention as materials for acoustic transduction [1-3]. Graphene oxide (GO) membranes and borate cross-linked graphene oxide (X-GO) membranes combine high stiffness, low mass density, and high loss coefficient. We show [4] that these mechanical properties are ideal for efficient, broadband, electro-acoustic transduction, where the acoustic diaphragm should be light, stiff, and internally damped. We present a quantitative comparison of the figure of merit, (E/ρ 3)1/2, where E is Young's modulus and ρ is the mass density, and the material performance index, tan δ (E/ρ 3)1/2, where tan δ is the loss coefficient. GO and X-GO exhibit high figures of merit, comparable to that of wood and exceeding that of aluminum and thermoplastics. The material performance indices of GO and X-GO exceed that of wood, thermoplastics, and aluminum. The latter are common diaphragm materials in acoustic transducers. For acoustic applications, it is important to understand the frequency dependent viscoelastic response. The complex modulus G = G' + iG'' of GO and X-GO membranes was measured by dynamic mechanical analysis and analyzed by the application of the time-temperature superposition (TTS) principle of polymer rheology. We find that X-GO shows a more than 30% increase in storage modulus G’ over the frequency range of 1 to 10 kHz, exceeding 55 GPa at 10 kHz. There is a reduction in loss coefficient tan δ = G''/G' for X-GO of ≈30% over the same frequency range, reaching tan δ = 0.04 at 10 kHz, which is approximately one order of magnitude larger than that of aluminum. A quantitative comparison of microspeaker performance was conducted at a fixed diaphragm mass m = 15-20 g and 14 mm x 8 mm size, including GO, X-GO, oak wood, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), aluminum, and titanium. Scanning laser measurements confirm pistonic operation of X-GO membranes. Microspeaker sound pressure level response was measured in both time and frequency domains. X-GO diaphragms exhibit 45% higher damping than aluminum membranes in microspeaker assemblies. Consequently, X-GO membranes enable the upshift of loudspeaker breakup frequency by 1/6 to 1/2 octave above speakers assembled with oak wood, PET, aluminum and titanium membranes. GO based materials are thus found to be an exceptional material for electro-acoustic transduction. References: [1] Q. Zhou, A. Zettl, Appl. Phys. Lett. 102, 223109 (2013). [2] A. U. Khan, G. Abstract:
The pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block targets the nerves innervating the anterior hip surface; however, few studies on this technique are currently available. We investigated the effects of the PENG block on postoperative opioid consumption after a hip surgery. This was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study conducted at a single institution. Fifty patients undergoing hip surgery were randomly allocated, 25 in each group, to receive a PENG block either using 25 mL of 0.5% ropivacaine (PENG group) or 25 mL of saline (control group). The primary outcome was the total opioid consumption 24 h postoperatively. The secondary outcomes were postoperative pain scores, time to first opioid demand, sensory block efficiency, quadriceps muscle strength, complications, and patient satisfaction. Compared with those in the control group, patients in the PENG group had a significantly lower total opioid consumption 24 h postoperatively (440.72 ± 242.20 μg vs. 611.07 ± 313.89 μg, P = 0.037) and significantly lower pain scores at 30 min postblock and 6 postoperatively ( P < 0.001 and P < 0.001 , respectively). The time to first opioid demand was significantly shorter in the control group than in the PENG group P < 0.001 . Sensory block effectiveness was better in the PENG group 30 min postblock and 6 and 12 h postoperatively than in the control group. Patient satisfaction was also better in the PENG group than in the control group. There were no differences in the other outcomes. The PENG block reduced the total opioid consumption in the first 24 h after hip surgery with no significant effects on quadriceps muscle strength and complication rate. This study was registered at the Korea Clinical Research Information Service (cris.nih.go.kr; Reg. No. KCT0006348) on July 16, 2021.

Abstract:
The paper focused on the description of the reduced graphene oxide (rGO) structure. This material is obtained from a multistage production process. Each of these stages has a large impact on its structure (the number and type of functional groups, number of defect or the size of the flakes), and this in turn affects its properties. We would like to visualize the reduced graphene oxide, both using a diagram showing the atomic structure, as well as by imaging using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). In the paper, the elementary composition of selected elements and data obtained from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy technique (XPS) will be also presented. Full Text: PDF ReferencesX. Peng, Y. Abstract:
Solid-state batteries (SSBs) present a promising technology and have attracted significant research attention owing to their superior properties including increased energy density (3860 mAh), wider electrochemical window (0-5V) and safer electrolyte design. From a safety standpoint, SSBs are particularly appealing in that replacement of flammable conventional organic electrolytes with highly conductive, mechanically stiff inorganic solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) can alleviate failure due to short circuit or ignition. However, operation of SSBs is hampered by numerous chemo-mechanical challenges [1 - 4], the most critical one associated with metal filament growth across the SSE. Filament protrusions can initiate at perturbations of the interface or microstructural heterogeneities and subsequently grow through the SSE, causing the battery to short-circuit. It is critical to understand from both an experimental and modeling perspective the interplay of various mechanisms including morphology of the SSE microstructure, elastic-viscoplastic behavior of Li-metal, critical current density and stack pressure on the morphology of filamentary protrusions across the SSE. While much has been done to understand the interplay of aforementioned mechanisms from an experimental standpoint [5,6], theoretical frameworks on modeling of filaments growth in SSBs are still at their infancy and typically simplify dendrites as pressurized cracks under a linear-elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) approach [7-8]. In this work, we propose a thermodynamically consistent phase-field reaction-diffusion-damage theory to investigate the morphology of filament growth across the SSE under varying chemo-mechanical operational conditions. The theory is fully coupled with electrodeposition at the Li metal-SSE interface impacting mechanical deformation, stress generation and subsequent fracture of the SSE. Conversely, electrodeposition kinetics are affected by mechanical stresses through a thermodynamically consistent, physically motivated driving force that distinguishes the role of various chemical, electrical and mechanical contributions. Concurrently, the theory captures the interplay between crack propagation and electrodeposition phenomena by tracking the damage and reaction field using separate phase-field variables such that metal growth is preceded by and confined to damaged regions within the SSE accessible by Li-metal. This is a critical feature of the theory and confirms experimental observations that the crack front propagates ahead of Li. We specialize the theory and study the role of variations of chemo-mechanical properties (i.e. applied electric potential, SSE fracture energy) on the morphology of metal filament growth and map operational conditions to distinguish between domains of i) stable vs. unstable growth ii) intergranular vs. transgranular growth mode. In doing so, the proposed framework provides a quantitative understanding on mechanisms dictating metal filament growth in SSEs and identifies mitigation strategies to employ in future SSB designs for successful operation. Abstract:
Abstract:
G1.6-0.025 is a dense molecular cloud, located near the Galactic Centre at l=1.6° and b=−0.025°. Lacking in star-forming or infra-red regions, the cloud was first detected as a prominent 5-GHz H2CO absorption feature (Whiteoak & Gardner 1979). NH3 observations by Gardner et al (1985) revealed a clumpy cloud with a diameter of about 30 parsec, average LSR velocity of 50 km s−1, and a kinetic temperature exceeding 50 K. In addition, a high-velocity component at 160 km s−1 has been detected towards one of the clumps (Gardner & Boes 1987). CH3OH in the cloud gives rise to a 12-GHz 20−3_1 E transition in absorption, representing the best example of rare population ‘anti-inversion’ for this transition (Whiteoak & Peng 1989; Peng & Whiteoak 1993). In contrast, the 36-GHz 4−1−30 E transition shows extended emission with superimposed knots containing maser emission (Haschick & Baan, 1993). Sobolev (1996) has suggested that a collision! has occurred between the main cloud and another cloudlet with relative velocity of 100 km s−1, resulting in high kinetic temperatures and shock waves that create the CH3OH masers.

Abstract:
Background: There are multiple equations for predicting resting energy expenditure (REE), but how accurate they are in severe acute kidney injury (AKI) patients is not clear. Our aim was to determine if predictive equations for estimated REE accurately reflect the requirements of AKI patients. Methods: We included in this prospective and observational study AKI patients AKIN-3 assessed by indirect calorimetry (IC). Bland-Altman, intraclass correlation coefficient and precision (percentagem of predicted values within 10% of measured values) were performed to compare REE by equations with REE measured by IC. Results: IC was applied in 125 AKI patients. The mean age was 62.5 ± 16.6 and 65.6% were male. Mean REE measured was 2,029.11 ± 760.4 kcal/day. There were low precision, and poor agreement between measured and predicted REE by the Harris-Benedict (HB), Mifflin, Ireton-Jones, Penn state, American College of Chest Physicians, and Faisy equations. HB without using injury factor was the least precise (18% of precision). Modified Penn state equation had the best precision, although the precision rate was only 41%. For all equations, the limits of agreement range were large leading to the potential under or overfeeding of individual patients. Conclusion: None of these equations accurately estimated measured REE in severe AKI patients and most of them underestimated energy needs.

Chinese cinema embraces a paradoxical relationship to its own traditions, especially concerning the abusive treatment of women. Films like Yellow Earth, Judou and Raise the Red Lantern which desire to uncover a repressed history, tend instead to reinforce and sustain an image of women's suffering to modern audiences. While exposing discrimination and injustice, some films perpetuate the stigma that women are still second class citizens. Three Chinese women filmmakers have challenged the dominant confusion ethos: "Male honorable, female inferior" (nan zun nü bei) by portraying women as independent and thinking individuals. This article analyses Passion (Zui ai) by Sylvia Chang, Song of the Exile (Ketu qiuhen) by Ann Hui and Three Women (San ge nüren) by Peng Xiaolian.

Abstract:
High pressure phase behavior experimental data have been measured for the systems carbon dioxide (CO2) + 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([bmim] [PF6]) and carbon dioxide (CO2) + 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([bmim] [PF6]) + 1-amino-2-phenoxy-4-hydroxyanthraquinone (C.I. Disperse Red 60). Measurements were performed in the pressure up to 18 MPa and at the temperature (323 to 353 K). As reported in the literature, at higher concentrations of carbon dioxide the phase transition pressure increased very steeply. The experimental data for the binary and ternary systems were correlated with good agreement using the Peng-Robinson equation of state. The amount of water in phase behavior of the systems was evaluated.

Abstract:
Leptobrachella shiwandashanensis was originally described from the evergreen forest of Mount Shiwandashan, Guangxi province, China. We herein record this species for the first time from Vietnam based on a new amphibian collection from Quang Son commune, Hai Ha district, Quang Ninh province. Morphological characteristics of the specimens from Quang Ninh province, Vietnam resemble those of the type series from China in the following characteristics: small size; head wider than long; pale brown dorsal surfaces, with distinct dark brown inverse-triangle-shaped marking between eyes; flanks with irregular black spots; ventral surface creamy white with brown spots on lateral margin; throat and chest nearly immaculate creamy white; fingers and toes free of webbing; dermal fringes on sides of fingers and toes absent; tibio-tarsal articulation reaching to posterior of the eye; iris bicolored, upper half brownish-red, transitioning to silver in the lower half. However, the specimens from Vietnam slightly differ from the type series from China by having a smaller size in males and a somewhat different dorsal colour pattern in the female. Genetic divergences between sequences of the Vietnamese specimens and those of L. shiwandashanensis from China are approximate 1.7–1.9% (16S gene). In addition to our morphological and molecular comparisons, we provide first natural history notes of L. shiwandashanensis from Vietnam.

Abstract:
ObjectiveThe Framework Convention on Tobacco Control recommends health warning labels (HWLs) include an attribution source. Little is known regarding the perceived credibility and effectiveness of different message sources. This study examined perceptions of four HWL attribution sources among adults in China – the world’s largest consumer of cigarettes.DesignCross-sectional experimental survey design.ParticipantsData were collected in 2017 from a convenience sample of 1999 adults across four cities in China; 80% of the sample were current smokers.Main outcome measuresParticipants viewed four versions of the same HWL, each with a different attribution source: the China Center for Disease Control (ref. group); the regulatory arm of China’s domestic tobacco company (STMA); Liyuan Peng, China’s first lady; and the WHO. Respondents indicated which HWL was the most: (1) credible, (2) effective at making people quit and (3) effective at preventing youth initiation.ResultsMultinomial logistic regression models estimated adjusted relative risk ratios (aRRRs) of the three outcomes. Controlling for demographics and smoking status, HWLs attributed to STMA and Liyuan Peng, respectively, were perceived as significantly less credible (aRRR=0.81, p<0.001; aRRR=0.31, p<0.001), less effective at making people quit (aRRR=0.46, p<0.001; aRRR=0.24, p<0.001) and less effective at preventing young smoking (aRRR=0.52, p<0.001; aRRR=0.39, p<0.001) than the China CDC HWL. There were no significant differences in perceived effectiveness of between the WHO and China CDC HWLs. Participants viewed the WHO HWL as significantly more credible (aRRR=1.21, p<0.001) than the China CDC HWL.ConclusionResults suggest the unique role of health organisations in conveying smoking-related messages that appear credible and effective at motivating others to quit smoking or never start smoking in China. Findings can inform global recommendations regarding HWL attribution sources.

Abstract:
A new species, Bredia malipoensis D. H. Peng, S. Jin Zeng & Z. Y. Wen, from China, is described and illustrated here. Bredia malipoensis is morphologically similar to B. longiradiosa C. Chen in having cordate leaf blades, umbellate inflorescence and undulate petals with unguiculate bases and retuse apices. It is characterized by its terete stem and petioles, green calyx lobes, purple anthers, yellow connective appendages and white filaments. It is also morphologically similar to B. velutina Diels in having a woody stem, unequal and cordate leaf blades, but it is differentiated by having no reddish trichomes, larger and semiorbicular calyx lobes, and unguiculate petal bases. Bredia malipoensis differs markedly from the former relatives by its densely tomentose indumentum (with uniseriate non-glandular and sparse glandular trichomes) both on vegetative and floral parts, basal leaf venation and purplish-red petals. Our phylogenetic analyses using nuclear ribosomal ITS and chloroplast trnV-trnM regions strongly support the generic placement of B. malipoensis and its relatives B. longiradiosa and B. velutina within Bredia.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Habitat Equivalency Analysis (HEA) and Resource Equivalency Analysis (REA) each require the Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) practitioner to assess both the likely behavior of impacted systems or populations had there not been a pollution event (baseline) and the response of the impacted system/populations given the pollution event, response actions, and restoration. In the past several years, a general consensus regarding the approach and biological assumptions underlying HEA has arisen. While the details vary with the particulars of the spill, cooperative NRDA for Chalk Point, M/V Stuyvesant, Lake Barre, and other spills reveal an emerging consensus surrounding the application of HEA to specific components of oil spill assessment. The same progression and consensus has not been observed with respect to the biological assumptions underlying REA. Assessments conducted for the Chalk Point (NOAA et al. 2002a), the Lake Barre (Penn and Tomasi 2002), North Cape (Sperduto et al. 1999, 2003) the Stuyvesant (CDFG et al. 2004), the Anitra (NJDEP et al. 2004) and the New Carissa (MIV New Carissa 2006) oil spills have used REA frameworks that differ from one another. Further, the variation in REA frameworks alone has resulted in NRD assessments that would differ by millions of dollars, even if all assumptions related to initial injury levels, underlying biological parameters, and the functioning of restoration projects were identical. The purpose of this paper is to fuse the work of Penn and Tomasi (2002) Sperduto et al. (1999, 2003), NOAA et al. (2002a), CDFG et al. (2004) Zafonti and Hampton (2005) and others with basic ecological theory to refine and extend current practices resulting in a more standardized approach to REA. For spills in which chronic, long term exposure is not an issue, we apply basic ecological approaches that consider a species ability to respond to environmental perturbation based on (1) changes to the proportion of adults attempting to breed, (2) changes in productivity (defined as fledglings per nesting pair), and (3) changes to annual survival rates. We show that, these factors, when integrated with a simple set of population dynamic equations, provide NRDA practitioners a common, easily understood framework upon which they can assess damages and the necessary scale of potential restoration options.

This paper examines the causal effects of computer-aided instruction (CAI) on children's cognitive and noncognitive skills. We ran a clustered randomized controlled trial at five elementary schools with more than 1,600 students near Phnom Penh, Cambodia. After 3 months of intervention, we find that the average treatment effects on cognitive skills are positive and statistically significant, while hours of study were unchanged both at home and in the classroom. This indicates that CAI is successful in improving students’ learning productivity per hour. Furthermore, we find that CAI raises students’ subjective expectation to attend college in the future.

This study presents the destruction of the Hungarian currency caused by the Second World War. The devastation caused by Nazi collaboration and the Soviet Red Army had an impact on the Hungarian “pengő”. The occupying Soviets tried to take advantage of all this and interfered with the circulation of money to increase their own political influence. They printed their own banknotes, which were later used to pay by the Hungarian National Bank. The Provisional Government tried to stop inflation after the war and then tried to resist Soviet pressure and to restore cash flow in Hungary, as well.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Diabetes treatment and rehabilitation are usually a lifetime process. Optogenetic engineered designer cell-therapy holds great promise in regulating blood glucose homeostasis. However, portable, sustainable, and long-term energy supplementation has previously presented a challenge for the use of optogenetic stimulation in vivo. Herein, we purpose a self-powered optogenetic system (SOS) for implantable blood glucose control. The SOS consists of a biocompatible far-red light (FRL) source, FRL-triggered transgene-expressing cells, a power management unit, and a flexible implantable piezoelectric nanogenerator (i-PENG) to supply long-term energy by converting biomechanical energy into electricity. Our results show that this system can harvest energy from body movement and power the FRL source, which then significantly enhanced production of a short variant of human glucagon-like peptide 1 (shGLP-1) in vitro and in vivo. Indeed, diabetic mice equipped with the SOS showed rapid restoration of blood glucose homeostasis, improved glucose, and insulin tolerance. Our results suggest that the SOS is sufficiently effective in self-powering the modulation of therapeutic outputs to control glucose homeostasis and, furthermore, present a new strategy for providing energy in optogenetic-based cell therapy.
