This article provides a comprehensive analysis of the Harrisburg, PA fiscal crisis and subsequent bankruptcy filing. While the “money burning” incinerator in Harrisburg was a major contributing factor to its overall financial crisis, there were other contributing factors. These include a mixture of political expediency, financial chicanery and malfeasance by public officials, demographic changes, economic decline of the city and the national economic environment during the Great Recession. The paper concludes by focusing on the lessons to be learned from the mistakes made by city officials and

Background Buprenorphine is a synthetic opioid frequently used in combination with naloxone for the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD). Overall buprenorphine distribution has increased nationally; however, pronounced regional differences in this distribution have also been identified. The objective of this study was to analyze buprenorphine distribution by 3-digit zip codes in Pennsylvania from 2010 to 2020. Methods Data was extracted from the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Automated Reports and Consolidated Orders System (ARCOS) by year to gather buprenorphine distribution, in grams pe

Introduction: Heart Failure (HF) is an important health care issue given its high prevalence, mortality, and cost of care. Despite numerous evidence-based strategies in the literature aiming at reducing HF readmissions, patients with HF remain at high risk for subsequent hospitalization with 20 to 25% readmitted within 30 days. Methods: Patients with both primary diagnosis HF at UPMC Harrisburg/West Shore/Community General totaled to 1574 in 2022. Colonoscopy screening starting at age 50 is key for the early detection and prevention of colorectal cancer (CRC). Barriers to care, such as lack of insurance, transportation, and healthcare literacy, can deter a patient from completing a screening colonoscopy. Delayed CRC screening results in missed opportunities for detecting disease at an earlier stage, ultimately leading to increased healthcare costs and morbidity. We implemented a pilot program that combines student-led patient navigation with ride-share services to promote colonoscopy screening among at-risk populations in Harrisburg, Pe

Abstract Because dairies across the U.S. have rapidly adopted breeding to beef breed sires, the use of beef semen has increased dramatically in recent years. The objective of this survey was to gather information about the use of beef semen by dairy producers in the Northeast United States to generate beef × dairy cattle for beef markets. The survey was conducted using the services of the Center for Survey Research at the Pennsylvania State University – Harrisburg campus. Respondents had two options for returning their responses: 1) mail the paper survey to CSR in the postage-paid business-rep

Abstract Background Underserved and underrepresented populations often lack access to affordable, quality healthcare, educational resources, and nutritious foods, all of which contribute to increased risk of Type 2 Diabetes and gout. Type 2 Diabetes is a condition characterized by the denaturation of the insulin receptors, due to chronically high blood glucose levels, leading to impaired regulation of blood sugar. Gout is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting joints in the lower limbs, marked by elevated serum urate levels and the accumulation of uric acid crystals in synovial fluid, causin

One should not overlook the fact that Asia is a home to humanism, atheism, and secularism. In the 18th-20th century, atheism, communism and other forms of western liberalism and humanistic ideology had taken their roots in several Asian societies. In recent history, various forms of secular worldview, humanistic, atheistic, communistic, agnostic, etc. have also found their niche in the Philippines. Hence, we set out this study to probe the extent of secularization in the Philippines today and from there, to draw some challenges it poses to the future of Asian theology and Christianity. T

Previous studies contend that Philippines is still a ‘collectivist’ society (Cf. Hofstede Center; Cukur et al. 2004:613-634). In this collectivist or community-oriented society, individualism is not something that is highly valued. Being ‘individualistic’ is often associated to being narcissistic, loner, asocial, selfish, etc. However, one may ask whether the youth in the Philippines are not spared from this insidious culture of individualism, notwithstanding the seemingly dominant collective and communitarian character of the society. Although the overwhelming poverty is still the main proble
